Security :: Display Of Number Of Failed Logon Attempt At Logon?

Jan 26, 2010

Our system is based on RH4 and is using pam_tally and faillog to record failed attempts and to lock users out after 5 attempts. We have a requirement to provide a normal (non-root) user logging onto our system, with information regarding the number of failed logon attempts made on their account before the current successful logon (similar to the functionality provided by HP Protect Tools on Windows). My first idea was to add 'faillog -u $USER' to the bashrc, however by the time the bashrc is run - the user has been successfully authenticated and the faillog has been reset back to zero.

Ubuntu Networking :: Encrypted Password In Samba Credentials File?

Apr 20, 2010

I remember that some time ago I found a guide on the Ubuntu website about adding samba shares to mount at boot via /etc/fstab. The guide also mentioned using a credentials file to store the username and password.

However, the password was encrypted (in md5 I think) and it could not be read directly, but it still worked with fstab mount. If I remember correctly, the file contents were similar to this:

Code:
useraname = user
password = --md5

where was replaced by the encoded password. All was done in terminal. Recently I changed computers, and re-installed Ubuntu, but I forgot to save that file so I am not sure about the contents. I would like to know how to do this again, but I can't find the guide anymore. Does anyone know how to do this? Storing the password in plain text in file readable only by root is not acceptable because it can be read by someone mounting the drive from other operating system, and the share cannot be mounted/unmounted by regular users (which is possible with the md5 encrypted password).

Ubuntu Networking :: CIFS User Credentials On A QNap 209II NAS-disk

Mar 29, 2011

When I use Nautilus to copy files to my NAS-disk they end up with owner "root" and I cannot edit them. If I copy them back to my PC they have owner <username> and are editable.

My fstab is: //10.0.0.20/Qmultimedia /media/Mmedia cifs credentials=/root/.smbcreds,directio,iocharset=utf8,noacl,noperm,rw, nobootwait 0 0

Of course I want my Mmedia mount on the NAS to behave like another disk on my PC; i.e. owner should be <username> and the files should be editable.

Ubuntu Networking :: Automatic Logon To Internet Using Scripts?

Sep 5, 2010

I'm working in France right now. And my internet access is through a router on a local network (LAN) of the hotel in which I stay. In order to have internet access I must type in my room number, my name, check the agreement and then click Enter. The problem is that the router cuts off internet every two hours. What I need is some script that does the followings:

- detect if there is no more internet connection (the LAN connection stays on)

- if there isn't to run the script that does all those things above.

What I've managed to do is the script that puts room number, name, check the agreement and click Enter using DejaClick, making it a bookmark and then open the firefox and run the script. The command that I've used in Terminal and which I think I can use in my script was:

[URL]

It works well. It's connecting to the net. What remains is the detection of the cut off of the internet connection.
Tried with Wicd, going to the properties of the wireless connection and then on Script. here I'm stucked.Don't know what to do anymore. It has the post-disconnection script option, but my LAN connection is not disconnecting, only the Internet access through this LAN is disconnecting.

Ubuntu Networking :: Multiple Keyring Logon Dialogues

Jan 21, 2011

I would happily do without having to logon to my wireless connection but, apparently, one can either have automatic logon at boot or automatic logon to the network - but not both.Anyway, of late my Ubuntu box has begun to request my network keyring password 2, 3 or 5 times (never 4, though). This was a real nuisance until I discovered that I can respond with my password on the first occasion and simply 'cancel' the subsequent requests. This is not critical but I would love to rid myself of the subsequent dialogue prompts.

Ubuntu :: Can't Embed Video On Webpage

Jul 22, 2011

I'm trying to embed a video on my website, and It keeps asking me if I want to save it, instead of just playing it. How do I embed to play and not pop-up the "save" dialog?

Today I demonstrated a simple SSH dictionary attack for a friend. Lucky for you - I also recorded it. (I've made my pw ridiculous and re-secured the box so don't even try it now lol - it'll take 100's of years to crack brute-force).

Anyways, here's what you'll need:<ol><li><a href="http://nmap.org/" target="_blank">NMap</a></li>
<li><a href="http://www.foofus.net/~jmk/medusa/medusa.html"

[Code]....

That's what I have. It shows the box where the video should be - but doesn't play it, just asks to save. Not sure if it's something with my browser plugins... or my code on my page... ? Tried with FireFox and Rekonq - same results. Tried with many different embed codes as well - all same results.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Embed Media Player In Webpage?

Apr 29, 2010

I have a file server running Ubuntu Server. No monitor or input hooked up...I just ssh into it for maintanance. I use it to store all of my music and video files. I was watching Hulu at work today and thought it would be nice if I could somehow stream or play my files from my file server while I was at work.

I have apache set up so I can serve websites from it so I was thinking if I could some how select the file to play and it play it in an embedded player, that would be fine. I'd like it to play music and videos.

Is there any way of going about this? I have minimal HTML experience, but I have extensive C/C++ experience and server experience. So I'm comfortable using some open source libraries to accomplish this.

Ubuntu :: Impress Unable To Embed Sound Files?

Aug 6, 2010

Back in my Windows days I used Power Point but now that I am a Linux guy I use OpenOffice Impress instead. First, even in power point if I embedded sound files I had to make sure they were .wav files, and in this format they grew very large. I have been told that I can embed a .wav file in Impress, but there is a limit of 100k on the file size. Also there is a place where you can change this limitation, but I can't find where to change it. Does any one know where this setting is?

Next, let me tell you what I am trying to do and maybe someone has a better way of doing it. I have slides in my presentation where I display text and have sound files that read the text that is displayed. I have a couple of ways to do this, but both ways are just inserting sound files into the slide. All this does is point to the sound file and then plays it. This works find until I want to transfer it to another computer. To get the presentation to run on another computer I would have to re-insert the sound file so the pointer was right.

So this means I need to not only copy the presentation over but the sound files also. My main question: Is there a better way to do this? Even if I have to use a different program if Impress is unable to embed sound files. I believe that both Power Point and Impress both fall short in this area. I am trying to stay away from developing a program to do this. There must be something out here in the Linux world that would fit the bill?

Server :: Embed Grails 1.2.2 In Apache2?

Apr 30, 2010

I downloaded grails [URL]... and installed it. Created a sample application hello world. It was running successfully. In browser [URL].. I was able to see grails running. Now comes the problem. To be able to always start the grails application running after boot I wrote a script in /etc/init.d/software_grails its contents are

[code]...

I have to open command prompt and go to /root/helloworld and then execute grails run-app. you dont have to write the name of application to run it. logging of boot messages is enabled /etc/default/bootlogd BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=Yes. then I opened /var/log/boot.

[code]...

But it does not work. If I am not wrong then above method will work ONLY WHEN some one Logs in not on boot time. Is there a way where I can embed grails in apache2 they [URL]... have not mentioned any thing about apache2 to deploy my applications.

Server :: Rsync Execution - With Crontab - Have Given Full Path To Rsync Too

Apr 12, 2011

I have a tiny shell script to rsync files between two servers and remove the source files.

This script works fine, when it has been initiated manually or even when the rsync command is executed on the command line.

But the same script doesn't work, when I try to automate it through crontab.

I am using 'abc' user to execute this rsync, instead of root, as root login to servers are restricted in all of our servers, by us.

As I mentioned earlier, manual execution works like charm!

When this rsync.sh is initiated through crontab, it runs the first command(chown abc.abc ...) perfectly without any issues. But the second line is not at all executed, and there is no log entry i can find at /mnt/xyz/folder/rsync.log.

Server :: Rsync Fails In Cron - Ssh Key - For Rsync?

Dec 8, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server and Postgresql 8.4. I have a .sh script that is run by cron every other hour. That works fine. The .sh script includes an rsync command that copies a postgresql dump .tar file to a remote archive location via ssh. That fails when run by cron; I think because it is (quietly) asking for the remote user's password (and not getting it). I set up the public/private ssh key arrangement. The script succeeds when run manually as the same user that the cron job uses, and does not ask for the password. I am able to ssh to the remote server from the source server (using the same username) and not get the password prompt (both directions), so why doesn't rsync work? I even put a .pgpass file in the root of that user's directory with that user's password, and the user/password are identical on both servers.

I think the problem is rsync is not able to use the ssh key correctly. I tried adding this to my script but it didn't help.

Code:

Here is the rsync command embedding in the .sh script.

Code:

Here is the cron entry:

Ubuntu Networking :: Mount Windows PC To Backup Using Rsync

Jul 1, 2011

I want to backup windows PC's in my network to my ubuntu 11.04 pc, using rsync. Rsync is working, but I have to mount the pc's. A few details.
My server is named: server
The windows pc is named: \PC_OF_MARTIJN
The folder where the mount is coming is: /home/bastiaan/backup/mounts
Credentials are in /home/bastiaan/backup/credentials and they're called: martijn

So what I'm going to add to /etc/fstab is this:
Code:
//server \PC_OF_USER /home/bastiaan/backup/mounts/user cifs credentials=/home/bastiaan/credentials/user,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0
Will this work?
