Networking :: VSFTPD 2.2.2 On Ubuntu Lucid Denying Remote Access

Apr 28, 2011

My apologies if this is the wrong board for this thread, but seeing how the issue appears to be related to where I'm connecting from, I thought this would be the place to look.To start off, I've been running VSFTPD on the box for a good year or so now. Until recently, everything seemed to be working fine, but during the past few days I've run into issues with it and have been having trouble pin-pointing the problem. I've gone as far as reinstalling VSFTPD and rechecking every line in the conf file to no avail.The issue presents itself when I try to login to the FTP server remotely. The moment I put my user name in, I get disconnected without any error message, simply connection closed. That isn't the case when I'm connecting locally from the server.If I try to connect remotely using eth0 (internal network), it works fine again... but if I try eth1 (external network)... it fails. I'm thinking it might be related to PAM, but so far have been unable to figure out what I need to change in the configuration there. Additionally, the PAM log file doesn't show any activity if I'm connecting through eth1, but displays it if connecting through eth0.

Fedora Networking :: Getting Vsftpd Running With Both Anonymous And Local User Access To The Same Folder

Aug 14, 2009

I'm trying to get vsftpd running with both anonymous and local user access to the same folder. The directory I'm using is /tftp with the following permissions:

dr-srwxrwx 7 root root 12288 2009-08-14 15:54 tftp

My vsftpd.conf is this:

anonymous_enable=YES
local_enable=YES
write_enable=YES

[code]....

I set the default "ftp" user's home directory to /tftp (was /var/ftp).

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba And Windows Networking - Read / Write Access To All Folders Contents From Both Machines

Mar 9, 2011

Ive managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?

Security :: Vsftpd Anonymous Write To Anon_root?

Mar 24, 2011

obviously it's at least difficult but I'm interested in knowing if it's theoretically possible to allow anonymous users of vsftpd to upload to the same directory that anon_root is set to. If it's not then it's no big deal, I'm just trying to get a sense of the range of possibilities.

Software :: VsFTPd Anonymous Read / Write Configuration?

Mar 13, 2011

I just want to configure Vsftpd to allow users to have total access to the FTP server. The server and users are all on a private LAN behind a router with no access from the Net, so I don't need any security. The following basic configuration doesn't allow uploading files after I log on as anonymous/whatever:

/etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf
Code:
listen=YES
anonymous_enable=YES
local_enable=YES
write_enable=YES
xferlog_file=YES

#anonymous users are restricted (chrooted) to anon_root
#anon_root=/home/ftp/incoming
anon_root=/var/ftp
anon_upload_enable=YES
anon_mkdir_write_enable=YES

#chroot_local_user=NO
#chroot_list_enable=YES
#chroot_list_file=/etc/vsftpd.chroot_list

Here's what happens when I log on as anonymous/whatever and try to upload a file:
> ftp server
Connected to server.

Name (server:root): anonymous

Ubuntu Networking :: Obtain Write Access To A Windows Machine?

Apr 26, 2010

For some time now, I have been backing up a windows box (data files only) to a ubuntu machine using the following:

mount -t cifs -o user=xxx,password=xxx //windowsshare/ /mnt/

For the first time I needed to restore some files and found I did not have the correct rights to write to the windows machine.

I had already wasted a whole day trying to map the ubuntu machine from windows and failed so this is not an option.

I have tried adding write rights to several accounts on the windows machine, also tried adding write rights to "everyone", checked both the share permissions, as well as the folder permissions.

I read about chmod, and tried to use the command gksudo to do something but this fails with DISPLAY error. Tried several things to fix this which didn't work and I was just going off on a tangent.

In the end I used a CD ROM to copy the files from one machine to another.

So for next time I need to restore a file, how can I give myself rights to do so?

Networking :: Run The Job Under A Root Account And Deny Read/write Access To A Normal User?

Jan 18, 2010

I'm setting up Ubuntu Karmic on my sister's old computer for my nephew, he's quite young so my sister asked to install some content filtering. I'll first setup an OpenDNS account and I've installed and managed to get dansguardian and squid working on a virtual machine to try it out. so far it's working pretty well, but I need to secure it form the inside out.

I was thinking of blocking specific outbound ports so he could not bypass the proxy. because by default the firefox configuration can be easily changed. so I have a couple of questions.

1. is it possible to block outgoing ports on Ubuntu?
2. is that the best method?
3. is there anything else I should be aware of to prevent subversion?

lastly, this question is probably unrelated to this board but I've set up a cron job to update a dynamic ip with OpenDNS, the problem is that the password is in clear text in the user's crontab, can I play with permissions? is it possible to run the job under a root account and deny read/write access to a normal user?

Ubuntu :: Write Access On Raid5 Mount And Network Access

Apr 22, 2010

I'm running ubuntu 9.10, and created a softraid5 with no problems. Now i need it to automount with user read/write access, and i need to make some network share folders. My fstab has the following line for the raid:

Code:
/dev/md0 /media/raid auto rw,user,auto,exec 0 0
After i mounted it, i changed the permission with:

Code:
sudo chmod 777 /media/raid/
So now i can create folders and files on it.
Then i created some shares, one with guest access and other with no guest access.

Now the questions:

1) If i access the guest shared folder via WinXP, i create files and folders, but they appear locked on ubuntu, so i cant access them until i change the permissions. If i go to proprieties/Permissions, the owner is "nobody".

2) What password do i need to use on WinXP, and i try to access the non-guest shared folded? Do i need to create a user just for that?

Ubuntu Servers :: Vsftpd - Can't Access Files/folders?

Sep 26, 2010

1- I've set up 3 virtual users,one of them is a system one (with a different password) and writes on his own home folder. With this one I haven't found any problems yet, but with the other 2 users I can't access files/folders created by them. It's a permissions problem for sure, but I'm not sure how to correct it.With these users I can upload files, create files and create folders. The problem is I can't access what I create (I can't enter a folder I created but it is there and I can upload files into it).

2- Whenever I turn on ssl_enable=YES I can't access the server (even from the server itself when I connect to localhost, It's a regular Ubuntu installation).Here's the config file for the users:

Code:
write_enable=YES
anon_mkdir_write_enable=YES
anon_other_write_enable=YES[code].....

Server :: Vsftpd 550 Access Denied On CentOS 5?

Jul 14, 2010

I've only recently encountered this problem with vsftpd when I was creating new ftp accounts. I keep on getting:

550 Access Denied.

on every action I try to do on ftp, no matter what. I've been trying to solve this myself however my attempts have been futile.

The permissions, and ownership have been checked and rechecked tens of times now, so thats not the issue. I've reinstalled the OS of my server twice now, and the problem is still persisting. Heres my config file, this isnt for anon by the way.

Code:
# Example config file /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf
#
# The default compiled in settings are fairly paranoid. This sample file
# loosens things up a bit, to make the ftp daemon more usable.
# Please see vsftpd.conf.5 for all compiled in defaults.

Server :: Setup VSFTPD On Centos 5 To Access /var/www/ Directly

Sep 26, 2010

Trying to set up VSFTPD on the CentOS 5 box at work, which is an internal web development server. I'm leaving soon, and all knowledge of or desire to learn SSH is going with me so the other employees will need to be able to access the web root using FTP clients.

Essentially there is no need for special user accounts or privileges, it's an internal server in a tiny company. I've got the LocalRoot set to /var/www/ which I can log in to and read all files via FTP, however despite setting everything to 777 in /var/www/ and below, I still can't get any write privileges on the FTP server.

SUSE :: Access Windows Drives With Write Access

Mar 12, 2010

I've got few virtual machines which were all created in Windows VMware and they're all stored on a separate partition. I can access this partition and all other NTFS partition from Suse but with read-only permissions. That means I can't run any of these virtual machines from Suse VMware. Is there any possible way to make all these drives writeable from Suse? I'm really hoping someone would be able to help me. I've got a lot of googling and have even searched this forum but without any luck.

Server :: Firefox - Unable To Access VsFTPd Directory. Connection Times Out After Authentication

Apr 13, 2011

Seismicmike here. My first post. I'll try to be as clear and concise as possible. For the sake of this post, I'm going to use 1.2.3.4 as a place holder for my public IP. On my web server, I would like to be able to access the /var/ftp directory through a web browser. I have successfully done so with Google Chrome, but I cannot access the directory in Firefox or IE. Both FF and IE ask me for authentication but then time out attempting to load the directory.

I suspect that there may be something up with switching to passive mode and/or that this issue may be more with my configuration of Firefox and not with the server (seeing as how Chrome works). Another possibility may be related to SSL. When I connect with FileZilla, I have to use the FTP over Explicit SSL/TLS option in order to connect. In any case I still would like to fix it. I would also like to avoid having to install FireFTP if at all possible.

Steps to reproduce (not that you can without my actual IP =J):

* Open Chrome
* Go to ftp://1.2.3.4
* Enter username
* Enter password

[code]....
