Ubuntu Networking :: Install Monitor Sever Using Web Interface?

Jul 21, 2010

I want to install ubuntu server on an old pc and use it in my home office. However, I'll have to borrow a monitor to do the instillation... when I'm done I'll have to return it. Is there a way to monitor/manage the sever by using my web browser, free of cost?

Also seeing that I'm not so savvy with commands should I install the desktop interface?

Ubuntu Servers :: Sever Without Keyboard Or Monitor?

Jan 13, 2011

I've recently decided to make a foray into the world of servers without any knowledge or experience. Yesterday, I ordered a Dell t110. I understand this is a really low-end server but I think it will work for home use. I am on a budget and literally just ordered the box. No keyboard. No mouse. No monitor. Not even an additional hard drive! With the exception of SLIGHTLY upgrading the processor, the thing is basically stock.

My question is this: Can I control and operate this server with my laptop somehow? Will that allow me to install Ubuntu Server as well as perform systems administration tasks? Ultimately, I'd like to get a new flat screen for the living room and have that be the monitor, with a wireless keyboard and mouse. However, like I said... I'm on a budget. I don't think I can sell my wife on that one right away. So... in the meantime, I need a way to actually USE my server.

Networking :: Can Forward Packets Sniffed By Monitor Mode Wireless Interface?

Feb 9, 2011

I'm a student who is working on a wireless research project. I have a madwifi driver for Atheros chipset on Debian Linux. With having the wireless interface get into monitor mode, I want to forward the captured packets from the wireless interface to the other Ethernet interface so that a different computer which is connected to this machine via Ethernet receives those packets. I checked that alll packets are received in the wireless interface using TCPDUMP. I tried to forward those packets with IPTABLES like 'iptables -p FORWARD -i ath0 -o eth2 -j ACCEPT' However, I couldn't see any packets forwarded to eth2 using TCPDUMP.

Ubuntu Networking :: Traffic Monitor - How Much Data Downloaded/uploaded On An Interface This Month And Previous Month

Nov 20, 2010

I'm looking for a powerful network traffic monitor that can do all of the following (or at least a combination of tools that can do the following):

Tell me how much data was downloaded/uploaded on an interface this month and the previous month tell me how the traffic was used throughout the monthshow which internal IPs (IPs in the 192.168.1.0/24 network) used how much traffic show which ports/protocols on those IPs used all that traffic

Hhow LIVE traffic flow statistics that can tell me total speed of traffic going through an interface as well asshow which internal IPs (IPs in the 192.168.1.0/24 network) are using how much of the traffic show which ports/protocols on those IPs are using that traffic

This tool will run on a linux router through which all my internal PCs are connected to the Internet. This means the tool(s) need to work with NAT (traffic being forwarded and not necessarily destined for the interfaced being monitored).

The distribution being run doesn't have a package manager so any packages or dependencies have to be manually compiled and SCPed over file by file. For this reason, the tool/tools need to be simple (things like vnstat, not things like ntop that have their own web interface).

I know that vnstat can tell me the first bullet point so it's only there incase there's a tool out there that can do everything. If there's a tool that can only do the second or third bullet point, that's great too - I'll just keep using vnstat and look for something else to do the other task.

Ubuntu Networking :: Nat Loopback - Get The Sever Viewable To Everyone Outside Of My Network ?

Sep 1, 2011

So I have an Ubuntu server setup but my modem from my ISP only has one ethernet port so I have to run my server behind a router. I have been able to get the sever viewable to everyone outside of my network but when someone is inside my network they have to view the server by the direct IP the web address doesnt work nor does the actual static IP. I believe this is something to do with my router not being able to loopback. It is a belkin N600 DB.

Server :: Error Formatting Raid On Install With Cent Os5.5 And Ubuntu Sever 10.10?

Dec 7, 2010

i have a dell server. its a couple of years old and has a perc 4 raid controller in it. When i do an install it shows the drives configured in the raid 5 configuration. i select the disk and do an auto partition. It goes for about 10min then errors with "error formatting drive volgoup00 the error is serious occurred press enter to reboot" or something like that can remember all the words. It doesn't give any info about the error.

i get the same error on centOs 5.5 and Ubuntu server 10.10

There is a firmware update for the raid controller that i could apply but dell's site was not letting me download it yesterday. Other than that I am not sure what to do. I could try an older version of CentOS 5.4 but i figure someone might tell me how to fix this so i can run the newest version.

Fedora Networking :: Windows Sever 2k3 Domain Controller / Use Machine With Samba As Secondary Domain Controller?

Apr 28, 2009

At the school i work in i have a server2k3 server that provides a domain to all the windows clients, aswell as a fedora server that acts as an imaging machine and webserver.

Im rather concious of the fact that if for any reason the Server2k3 server was to die there is no backup of active directory, or anything that can take its place whilst a replacement is found.

So is it possible to use a fedora machine with samba as a secondary domain controller? so it can be used as a login server, and has a copy of AD.

Ubuntu :: Identifying UPNP Connections To Sever?

Jul 13, 2011

I have a setup with a mythtv backend that streams media via the built in upnp to two xbox 360s. This works perfect at the moment. However I need a command/script that can identify if either of the two xbox's are connected via upnp. I need this so that I can have the system auto shutdown if no one is connected using the existing mythtv sleep wake features. (Basically if a script returns 1 then dont shutdown if returns 0 then shutdown.)

Code:
if upnp is connected then
dont shutdown
else

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sever 9.10, Aureal Vortex2 - Unable To Get Sound

Feb 12, 2010

Just recently installed server 9.10 to use for various purposes (network auth, file server, etc) and one of the things on the tail end of the Todo list was to set up a network sound server. To my surprise however it seems I have no sound capability. So I ran though the usual troubleshooting, here's the output:

lspci:

Code:

00:0f.0 Multimedia audio controller: Aureal Semiconductor Vortex 2 (rev fe)

lshw:

Code:

*-multimedia:1
description: Multimedia audio controller
product: Vortex 2
vendor: Aureal Semiconductor

[code]....

There is a driver associated and it is loaded in the kernel. Alsa even lists it when it reloads, So... I'm new to alsa since sound generally just works on desktop versions, however I am well adjusted with the terminal so feel free to ask for whatever output you need.

Ubuntu Servers :: Having One Sever At Home And Connect All The Other Machines (PCs/Laptops) To That Server?

Oct 31, 2010

the title of this thread said it all. I've never ever seen a server (unless I've never paid attention) nor used it in my entire life. Having that said, I think you know I'm level 0 when it comes to servers.I start reading here:[URL]Also, I found two threads here which answered couple of questions I had. What I'm planning to do and why?1- Have a home server. I always had that idea of having one sever at home and connect all the other machines (PCs/Laptops) to that server.2- Backup.3- Sharing Files, Pictures, etc.

4- Connect to the interent through the home server. I live in a big house and we have only one ADSL Router/Modem. Obviously, I can't access the internet from any room unless I'm close to the router. The server will be in a place where I could connect to the interent even if I'm very far from the router.5- I've never used Servers before so I'd like to try it now especially I started to use Linux and stopped using Windows and yes, I don't want to go back to Windows no matter what.

My Hardware:In my signature, you can see some of my hardware but I'll list them here:MB - GigabyteIntel P4 @3.00GHz2GB RAM500 SATA HDDLAN - Built inWireless Adapter - D-LinkADSL Router - CableWireless (the brand name)Laptops - Not mine but will be connected to the serverMy current PC has 9 OS's installed (Multi-Boot System). Other laptops have Windows and I'm planning to use Linux on one of them which is PII with 64MB RAM and 4GB HDD.y Questions: Again, this is my first time so 1- Do I have to remove all the other 9 OS's and keep that PC solely for Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit Server? or it's OK to keep them? If yes, then shall I be able to boot into Ubuntu 10.04 Server after choosing it from GRUB2 Menu?

2- I read about Server Types but as mentioned above, my usages are limited and I don't need Web Server, Mail Server, etc. So, do I really need a Server (Ubuntu 10.04) OS to do that? or Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition is up to this job?3- I guess this should be the first Question. Do I need any particular skills to deal with Servers? or just general knowledge will be enough?I believe in one thing. No matter how much you read about something and learn, the real experience or the practical experience is something else. When you do something by yourself, you will never forget it.

4- Probably this is same as Question #2. I'm very bad in CLI I know very few commands only and I know that GUI is disabled in Servers OS. How hard that could be for someone like me? I read a reply by a friend of mine (HermanAB) at one of the threads here. He said if someone wants to use GUI on a Server then it's better to use the Desktop Edition. Thing is, I'm very interested to try and use a server but as I mentioned, I'm very weak in CLI.5- If Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition could offer all the tasks I want (listed above) so what exactly do I need to know/learn?

Server :: Configure Sendmail As Send-only Sever For Web Host

Feb 21, 2010

I am trying to set up sendmail on my intranet (home) webserver, so that it will send mail via my ISP. I have searched for similar threads including this thread, but the responses do not seem to have solved the problem. All I want is to call sendmail from Perl, to post myself the responses to a test form I am building, using my normal internet mail address. I do not want to receive or relay mail from any host except the web server itself (127.0.0.1).

I have edited sendmail.mc to define SMART_HOST as my isp's mail server and MASQUERADE_AS to be my local network name (which is not a registered domain - it is just the name I have given my home intranet). I have run make and built a fresh sendmail.cf, then restarted sendmail.

Using my form, I am able to submit the message to sendmail, but after 40 seconds the mail log shows a message
