I have recently upgraded to a VPS for the purpose of web hosting a group of sites related to my business. The reason for the upgrade was because we wish to run a shopping cart software which required greater memory for PHP and the VPS was the most economic solution. So, I have very basic linux knowledge but I am the definition of a newbie when it comes to going further than just scratching the surface of server configuration! I have successfully hosted our main site for a number of weeks but recently the postfix service stopped sending mail. I have Plesk Control Panel installed and postfix continually shows as not started even though in SSH the service status is definitely running - I have gone through the troubleshooting checklist here (http://www.postfix-book.com/debugging.html#d0e6) but can't get any further than section 2.1 as when running the host command (#host relay-test.mail-abuse.org), I get # -bash: host:command not found. I've gone further in the document but not found any issues...
When postfix was working properly (i.e. sending emails!), the plesk CP showed the service as started and all emails from the website were sending as normal. The mailq command is showing the messages stuck in the mailq and the maillog shows the following:- http://pastebin.centos.org/36446 - these are the latest few pages. To check the configuration and basic elements I have flushed the mailq (which shows a stack of messages waiting) and I have also spent a long time (2 weeks) reading up on the parameters that should be in main.cf and master.cf.I have found that when I 'telnet localhost 25' I get the following response...[root@s15397216]# telnet localhost 25Trying 127.0.0.1...Connected to localhost.Escape character is '^]'.

Just setup my postfix and trying to telnet localhost.
here it is..
telnet localhost 25
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.
I wanna paste my /var/log/maillog but i don't know how, when i copy from putty screen it's only copied part of the log.
btw i found one similar problem here [URL] but the thread starter already lost the pastebin so i don't know how he resolved the problems.

I was asked to setup 802.1x Port Based Authentication for users connecting to a Managed Cisco Switch. From what I was told, it should work like this:
- User plugs workstation into switch.
- Workstation asks user for radius credentials.
- Workstation is then able to authenticate to the Radius server.
- After workstation is authenticated, the switchport then becomes unrestricted and allows the workstation to communicate on the network.

I'm working on setting up access for our developer via Telnet, we are on a local network behind a physical firewall. I set up the standard Telnet service for Fedora15 and from localhost I can login via any user and root.... However I cannot login from another terminal on the LAN, even though I can ping and FTP to the fedora15 box. I added the firewall rules for telnet, that did not work, so I disabled the firewall, still cannot get a connection via port 25. I feel either port 25 is closed in another manor or the telnet is restricted to the localhost.
Also I cannot login to root to configure the Firewall Desktop GUI, only standard users, is this an issue? I also cannot login to the console as root even though I use the correct password.I can only su to root and sometimes it is a PITA. There must be some settings to clear these issues up...

I have a customer who is complaining that they can connect to prt y on IP x with telnet. They are seeing the following:
telnet x.x.x.x y
Trying x.x.x.x...
Connected to x.x.x.x.
Escape character is '^]'.
after some time the connection of course times out. Connection closed by foreign host. There is no telnet service running on this port so they cannot do anything, but they are complaining tht the fact that telnet "connects" is a security risk. I am having difficulty explaining why they are able to connect with telnet. I know it has to do with the socket layer API in Linux but I am having difficulty explaining this sufficiently. I also can't just say "this is the way linux works" to them. I am looking through "UNIX Network Programming" by W.

I can telnet (while on the actual machine) using
Quote:
telnet localhost 25
When I try and use the local machine's ip
Quote:
telnet 192.168.100.9 25
I get
Quote:
Trying 192.168.100.9...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
[Code].....
This last one is strange as I the IP looks odd.
What I am doing wrong, and how do I fix it. After much surfing many mosts say that telnet is not used anymore but I want to use it to test my smtp server.

I've tried searching for this peculiar behavior, but couldn't find a solution that works for it - I have installed Redhat on my system and have a listener running on port 7878. I wanted to check if the port is accessible from a machine on the network, and so i telnet-ed from a remote machine and it worked. Now comes the weird problem - I used the same command (telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 7878) locally and it was able to telnet. However, if I try to connect using localhost, meaning, "telnet localhost 7878" or "telnet 127.0.0.1 7878", it gives me the following error:
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
Here is my /etc/hosts entry:
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6
[Code]....
Not sure where the problem is. I expect telnet to connect irrespective of whether i use the IP address OR localhost when i use telnet locally.

I have setup an OpenVPN server on my server box, it had been working perfectly until today. It operates on port 1194 which I am now unable to connect to (tried telnet). I have checked all the firewall rules and they still allow the port and I have also checked to ensure that OpenVPN is still listening to the port, which it's not but I have tried restarting the service and the box which dosent make any difference. The only thing that has changed is that yesterday I installed Openfire, could this have broken something?

I'm trying to enable port forwarding so I can use my computer as an FTP server to some friends. Here's my setup:
CLEAR wireless modem <--> LAN port 4 on router (not WAN) and LAN port 1 on router <---> eth0 in Ubuntu 9.10
The modem acts as a DHCP server which successfully assigns an IP address to my desktop system. I can also go onto the internet just fine on my desktop, and any other computer that connects to the router.
I have enabled port forwarding on the modem (not the router because it's being used as a switch, and not using its WAN port) to forward ports 21 and 80 to my desktop. What I don't understand, though, is that when I try to FTP to the modem's WAN IP address, the connection is refused. However, when I use websites such as:
www.canyouseeme.org
www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/
They say ports 21 and 80 are open (and not other random ports like 22 or 23 which I tried to see if the site simply said everything was open) but I cannot access my site from a web browser.
I was wondering what it was that's stopping computers from the Internet from communicating with my computer? The modem? The router? Configs?

I'm running wordpress and have gone to the painstaking effort of setting up the ftp server on my 5.3 machine so it can do its own updates and download plugins. However, I've found that if I try to download anything, I get a "unable to resolve host..." error from the script. If I watch Iptraf while making the request, I see all the port 53 requests going to 127.0.0.1. Pings are too.
However, if I ssh in, I can ping and wget and whatever I want all day long and all the DNS requests to go the router (Clarkconnect 3.2 gateway machine). The web browser in the terminal works fine too. What is it about the php scripts that is causing them to misdirect pings and dns requests? I've never seen anything like it and can't find anything on the web about it either.

I'm trying to test smtp connectivity to my postfix configuration and I can telnet to port 25 from the computer itself but cannot from the outside. I get a connection refused error message. What am I doing wrong? I believe my dns is setup correctly as it seems the telnet can hit the box so I'm fairly sure its not that.

I have been trying all day today to setup a sendmail SMTP server on our Red Hat 5.5 dev box. We have 2 network cards, 1 to the local network with a 192.168 prefix and an external card which goes out to the web through a BT leased line through a Cisco router.
First I followed one of the many helpful tutorials online to setup sendmail, installed all the required packages and made a couple of small config changes to allow the service to listen on all IP addresses rather than just the localhost 127.0.0.1.
The main change is in the /etc/mail/sendmail.mc file where I have changed the following line;
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=x.x.x.x, Name=MTA')dnl
I have tried removing Addr completely, setting to either the local or external IP and then rebuilding the sendmail file using 'make -C /etc/mail' and then restarting using 'service sendmail restart'
The SMTP port has been added into the firewall and it is showing to be listening on IP 0.0.0.0:25 which I believe means it is listening on all IP's assigned to the machine, sendmail is also in listen mode and running correctly.
Finally I have changed the /etc/mail/access file to include the local IP range 192.168 and external IP range and rebuilt this into the /etc/mail/access.db file and then restarted sendmail.
Googling the error all the sites I have found talk about making sure the 'DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=x.x.x.x, Name=MTA')dnl' line is uncommented and not much else in terms of what else might be incorrect.
I am starting to run out of ideas on things to change or check, telnet works correctly on other ports on the same server, ie httpd for apache on port 80. I have also rebooted the server to make sure that it wasn't something odd happening.
