Ubuntu Networking :: How To Install B43-fwcutter
Sep 1, 2011
I have a compaq Presario C500 windows vista and I installed Ubuntu natty Ubuntu 11.04 by using Wubi. What I really need right now is an executable b43-fwcutter, and I don't know how to get it. When I boot up in Ubuntu, I've got no wireless. There's an access point I can connect to (if not using Ubuntu), but Ubuntu isn't activating the interface card. I've got no wired interface nor hope of one.
I slogged through countless webpages and came to the instruction [URL].. that I should install b43-fwcutter and use it on wl_apsta_mimo.o. It tells me to install using command `sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter' (sorry if that's not the proper etiquette for posting a command) but I can't install with that command because apt-get wants to use the Internet. (err msg: "E: Unable to locate package b43-cutter") So, I have wl_apsta_mimo.o and the other files that come with it in directory broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5. But I don't have b43-fwcutter and I can't figure out how to get it.
[URL].....ernet%20access tells me "b43-fwcutter is located on the Ubuntu install media under ../pool/main/b/b43-fwcutter/ " but I can't find that directory. Where is it?

I did a full install of 9.10 on my Dell Inspirion 1200 laptop & use a Dell 1350 card, after several posts and replies I went to [URL]and followed the instructions for Ubuntu/Debian. This is the result I get....
mike@mike-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
[sudo] password for mike:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
[code]....
I followed this procedure before installation (live CD) and it successfully found and installed the firmware. Apparently it was saved in live CD. What do I need to do?

I am pretty new to Linux still. I have a desktop I'm trying to set up as a Linux machine. I'm apparently running a testing version of squeeze (I was running lenny I thought too many updates?). Anyway, I've been trying various things all night to try to get my wireless card to work. The system tells me I have a Broadcom BCM4318. When I run dmesg I get this:
[ 496.640869] b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to [URL] and download the latest firmware (version 4).
[ 619.374662] input: b43-phy0 as /class/input/input25
[ 619.410838] firmware: requesting b43/ucode5.fw
[ 619.416638] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found or load failed.
Over and over. When I head to the website, it tells me to run b43-fwcutter. I've tried installing that and it says it installs fine but nothing ever changes. Everything I've found says that should work so I can't really find any suggestions for what to do if it doesn't.

I'm trying to use a persistent install of Lubuntu 10.10 on a USB flash drive. I thought it was working at first, but the wireless connection won't happen at all; period!
Whenever I click on the network Icon, all I get is a pop up message telling me I'm not connected to the wireless Then when I click on the wireless menu to select a network, the sign in window closes before I can even try to do anything with it, and then I get that "your not connected" pop up message again.
It's quite irritating. It basically won't let me sign on to a wireless Internet connection at all.Every time I do try to connect all I get is the "your not connected" message and nothing else. I'm using a 16 GB Kingston Data Traveler USB flash drive and am trying to run it on a Toshiba A100 Satellite laptop.
I've also been experimenting with a 16 GB Kingston Data Traveler 102 USB flash drive, with Linux Mint 9 LXDE installed on it and haven't had any problems with that one accessing wireless connections on the same computer.
Does anyone know what would cause this? It seems to boot well enough. But I just can't get Lubuntu 10.10 to access wireless networks to save my life. Could it be a hardware issue? I should note too that I used exactly the same USB flash drive on the same computer when giving Xubuntu 10.10 a "test drive" as a persistent install. But I didn't have any troubles like that with it.

I accidentally downloaded a torrent of the ALTERNATIVE ubuntu 10 installer. install went fine except for the part where i had to do the networking part, think i did something wrong there (as in skipped it). past ubuntu installs worked perfect using regular installer. googleing led me to use "lshw", and the command lshw says that the network is disabled (shows correct network controller tho).

I had the elrepo kmod-r8168 driver running smooth for a while on my development box.
Yesterday, I did a clean install on it and when I tried to install the latest kmod-r8168 rpm, it failed to enable the networking support:
# yum --enablerepo=elrepo install kmod-r8168
The install performed all proper steps to disable the 8169 driver, I double checked to be sure. This is not a connectivity issue. If I remove the kmod-r8168 rpm, reboot the server and run the ifconfig eth0 up to activate the interface, everything works as expected. I use the latest kernel (2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 x86_64).
First, I performed a clean install, activated the eth0 and did a yum update, then installed the kmod-r8168 with yum. Then, I reinstalled the OS again, activated the eth0 and installed the kmod-r8168 on a 5.5 CD based kernel, same fail results. The only hiccup is: every time I start the box, I have to activate the eth0 interface (with default CentOS 8169 driver):
# ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.3
# ping -c 3 192.168.1.1 (no packets lost)
# ifconfig eth0 up
Once I do this, I have network connectivity.

I can't seem to get connected to the net. This is a new install of 9.10 and i last had 8.04 installed. I think that version got on the net automatically but the previous 3 versions of Ubuntu i used did not and i had to put in the dns whatever numbers. I think I have all the right numbers on hand but nothing seems to work. Wicd or network connections is set out differently from the previous version and I tried putting in whatever wherever but am getting no where. I can't seem to remember to use ip4 or 6? Or well I took everything back to what it was and also tried the modems(Speedstream 6520) page using a browser. No luck there. I googled and one page said use 10.1.1.138 and another said use http://speedstream but nothing happened. Not sure where to go from here....have i missed something?

while installing Lucid server i386, the interface works fine (time server connection, downloading additional packages etc) but after the reset the adapter does not connect to the network. ifconfig returns the correct (static ip) details and I can ifconfig eth0 down/up but the link lights on the card and switch are not on.
I can successfully ping the servers ip and host name, but anything else returns "Destination Host Unreachable"
Also found a thread in these forums by someone with the same problem that I was going to tack this on the end of, but couldn't find it again. In that one the person solved his issue with adding the noapic command in the grub config, but that doesn't work with me unfortunately.

It's my first time trying out a Linux and everything is going great except for my networking. I just recently purchased a wireless usb adapter 802.11n and I tried to install the driver from the cd it came with, but when I read the readme file it said it only supports up to kernel versions 2.6.18 ~ 2.6.29. Since I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 my kernel type is 2.6.32.25. Does anyone know if there are any updated versions of similar drivers online? or do I have to return this wireless adapter and get a different one?

Is it possible for two computers to access the same program from 1 system at the same time using remote x apps? In other words can a system have two instances of a program running and being utilized by two different computers remotely?
For example lets say I install Program X on Computer 1. I ssh into Computer 1 from Computer 2 and use remote x apps to use Program X. Is it possible for Computer 3 to ssh into Computer 1 and use Program X at the same time using it for a completely different task?

Have spent 6-8 hours trying to get the darn wireless to work. Started on Network Manager, switched to WICD, then back to Network manager. Have uninstalled and reinstalled driver a dozen times. When I go to System->Administration->Windows Wireless Drivers, get pop-up saying "Unable to see if hardware is present" When I click "OK" then network driver window says "Hardware present: Yes" and the driver is listed.First time user of Linux, and getting frustrated.I really want this to work so I can become as smart as all of you reading this post.

I have just done a new install and have no network (LAN) connection. My network card blinks as if there is activity but the corresponding diode on my router is not active.I have checked the ethernet cable by switching with a valid connection to a WinXP system; like this I know that all the router ports are good. The network configuration module does not indicate a wired connection.
I have also tried sudo ifdown eth0 and sudo ifup eth0 but receive error message: interface eth0 not configured Can anyone help as it is my first experience with linux systems.

setting up a wireless network, so bear with me. I just bought a Cisco wireless router and the little USB plug ins (which if I may say, are overly expensive). I can not figure out how to install the router. It is a Linksys E1000 Wireless N Router. I tried to load the software via wine. No luck doing that. I also checked out on Linksys's website and they don't give any info on linux or Ubuntu. Does someone out there know something? Or should I just take this one back and purchase something else

I started yesterday off wanting to install this USB wifi adapter on my PC (which is mini-itx so has additional pci slots) [URL] it has the Ralink 3070 chipset. I tried everything I found when googling, nothing came close to working, this was in Fedora12. So I gave up and installed Ununtu 10.04, hoping for better luck there. Ubuntu will recognise the presence of a wifi adapter, here's the output from iwconfig
[Code]....
But it sees no wifi networks and generally won't do anything; I don't think it has the right driver. Rosewill does list a (linux) driver and so does Ralink, but again, neither of these come close to working. has anyone gotten this adapter or chipset to work in ubuntu?
