These forums won't let me post using an iPad. I can visit this page, no problem, but when I try to add or edit a post, it just doesn't work. The edit page appears, but when I tap in the main textarea field, nothing happens. I expect the virtual keyboard to slide into view and a cursor to appear. This does not happen. In fact, if the keyboard is visible prior to tapping in the text area, then the keyboard slides out of view when the textarea is tapped. It's kind of awkward, having to wait until I get near a desktop machine before I post anything.

I have a compaq Presario C500 windows vista and I installed Ubuntu natty Ubuntu 11.04 by using Wubi.What I really need right now is an executable b43-fwcutter, and I don't know how to get it. When I boot up in Ubuntu, I've got no wireless. There's an access point I can connect to (if not using Ubuntu), but Ubuntu isn't activating the interface card. I've got no wired interface nor hope of one.
I slogged through countless webpages and came to the instruction [URL].. that I should install b43-fwcutter and use it on wl_apsta_mimo.o. It tells me to install using command `sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter' (sorry if that's not the proper etiquette for posting a command) but I can't install with that command because apt-get wants to use the Internet. (err msg: "E: Unable to locate package b43-cutter") So, I have wl_apsta_mimo.o and the other files that come with it in directory broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5. But I don't have b43-fwcutter and I can't figure out how to get it.
[URL].....ernet%20access tells me "b43-fwcutter is located on the Ubuntu install media under ../pool/main/b/b43-fwcutter/ " but I can't find that directory. Where is it?

I did a full install of 9.10 on my Dell Inspirion 1200 laptop & use a Dell 1350 card, after several posts and replies I went to [URL]and followed the instructions for Ubuntu/Debian. This is the result I get....
mike@mike-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
[sudo] password for mike:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
[code]....
I followed this procedure before installation (live CD) and it successfully found and installed the firmware. Apparently it was saved in live CD. What do I need to do?

How Linux would run NT in a VM, and the correct definition of how things work. Now I now about nothing about of Linux, though I have installed it a few times, but never really worked with it. I have been using MS products for 15 Plus years and have a pretty good understanding of how things work. I do not claim to be any expert. Some Idea of what I am inquiring: Now, how does the Linux Kernel handle the NT Kernel? Are processes/threads in cpu separated for each Kernel? How would interrupt requests be handled? How is Memory and Disk Management handled? Then obviously how would Device Management be handled as well?

Installed azureus vuze from the terminal. Im not thrilled with it and want to remove it.I used the comand sudo apt-get remove azureus and Code: sudo apt-get remove vuze it then listed a buch of files no longer needed so I erased them as well. The program is still there and operational. I tried the above again and it says that they dont exsist. I even looked for them in synaptic and the software center with no luck but I expected that. What am I missing?

I'm working through some problems in a beginners programming book. The author mentions a formula for calculating the number of ways of picking out n things from a collection of m of them:
Code:
/ m m!
| | = -----------
n / n! (m-n)!
But he does not give a name for the formula. Does anyone happen to know what it is called? I need to do some related research.

ive got a windows partition and a ubuntu-10.10 partition. i just tried to reinstall windows on the first one - but things didn't work out properly. after the first restart the pc just hung in the first boot screen - it wouldn't boot from the windows cd or the harddrive. every time i restart the computer it just hangs in that screen. i can't even choose to boot from cd/usb to use a livecd and rescue my files on the ubuntu partition. its like the keyboard doesn't work anymore. ive tried both a usb keyboard and one of the old kind with the prongs. so i cant get into ubuntu.
here's the screen, it pops up a second after i restart. usually the pc just boots up a couple seconds later and i can choose beteen win/unbuntu; or i can just press 'esc' and choose to boot from usb. but now nothing is happening, the keyboard doesn't seem to work, and it wont go passed this screen.*edit* actually the keyboard is working, because ctrl-alt-del restarts the computer, but thats about it..

I need to write a script that can search up to 3 parameters and find all files containing those words. then display them and the amount of hits it got.if the first parameter exists, then we can assume we are looking for the word supplied.if the second parameter exists, then we are looking for files with both keywords.if third parameter exists test the second parameter for the values ('and', 'or', '-v') and search accordingly. These are the only values accepted as the the second one when 3 parameters are present.
lastly, if there are zero or more than three parameters echo as an error and when 3 parameters have been entered we echo an error when the second parameter is not one of the following: 'and', 'or', '-v'.

I've been through what I could find in searches here, but nothing fixed the problem so far.Here's the situation: I am using Ubuntu Natty 11.04, dual booting. So I know the sound is fine on the XP system, and also works crisp and clear on my Vista laptop sitting next to me. I've tried the sound through Banshee, Amarok and Exaile all with the same crackling as if the file was ripped off a bad CD. I'll repeat that I've tested the speakers, and also the jack port (being that there are two on my PC) so I am fairly certain it is an issue with Ubuntu. Here is the ALSA information report: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=ad...8b8d1ee19905a5
It's not a problem with PCM- the crackling will go away if the level on PCM is like 30~ but then the sound is very quiet even with Master and speaker volume at 100, at which point you can still make out the crackling.

I'm trying to use a remote procedure call. When I call my server, my server should activate gammu and send an sms with it. I've used the code in the following tutorial: [URL]. The command for the uptime, and the command for the greeting work perfectly. But when I write my own method on my server, it fails ..
Code:
function uptime_func($method_name, $params, $app_data) { return `uptime`; } function greeting_func($method_name, $params, $app_data) { $name = $params[0]; return "Hello, $name. How are you today?"; }
function gammu_func($method_name, $params, $app_data) {
$text = $params[0];
$number = $params[1];
$result = "echo '$text' | gammu sendsms TEXT $number";
exec("$result");
return $result; }
On my Client (the one that calls the server) I see the output of $result. So my gammu_func is definitely working... He just doesn't execute
Code:
exec("$result")
I know that syntax is right cause I tried it in a different php file. I think it has something to do with the user rights. I don't think I have the privileges to run that command ...

I am pretty new to Linux still. I have a desktop I'm trying to set up as a Linux machine. I'm apparently running a testing version of squeeze (I was running lenny I thought too many updates?). Anyway, I've been trying various things all night to try to get my wireless card to work. The system tells me I have a Broadcom BCM4318. When I run dmesg I get this:
[ 496.640869] b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to [URL] and download the latest firmware (version 4).
[ 619.374662] input: b43-phy0 as /class/input/input25
[ 619.410838] firmware: requesting b43/ucode5.fw
[ 619.416638] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found or load failed.
Over and over. When I head to the website, it tells me to run b43-fwcutter. I've tried installing that and it says it installs fine but nothing ever changes. Everything I've found says that should work so I can't really find any suggestions for what to do if it doesn't.

I've noticed that some users post here and that the forums put the little fedora icon on their post so it recognizes what distro they are running. I have a default install of Fedora 15 and all I get is a penguin for generic linux. I know in the grand scheme of things this is not important at all, however it's the little things that add up sometimes so I'd like to know how did you do it.

F10 trying to key in static ip address. Have followed guidelines on turningoff NetworkManager and turning on network. i went to command line and did a couple of chkconfig things and entered ip address, with subnet. when i do ip addr show i see under eth0 inet 192.168.3.11/32 which is 255.255.255.0, i'm pretty sure. i do not see gateway. when i go to system/network get prompted to log into root, network config window opens. icheck eth0 and the subnet mask is 192.168.3.1, the gateway, which is in correctly, in the gateway slot, as well. i still can not ping to from my xp based multihomed router.

I need to know what commands we have people run in the terminal in order to help them troubleshoot their issue. The reason being, is I was reading a thread where someone was stating about how they had to do all this and all that from a terminal and what not and that there should be a GUI Tool.
Well I'm going to make a GUI tool that allows them to obtain all the necessary information (and fixes are possible too) to help with their issue that they're currently having. For example: I know we run lsmod for sound issues, but what other commands do you have them run to check sound, video, network, etc. It will be made in wxPython so that it can be easily sent to others. If it becomes quite useful, then maybe we could get it in the repos.

I just installed 11.4 x86_64. Using FF beta 4, I can get to the Main Page - openSUSE and log in there, but when going to the forums, it doesn't recongnize my login and I cannot log in through the link.
I wonder why FF4 Beta is the default install for 11.4.

I'm attempting to learn 'processing', the language used on the Arduino but I am having a bad time finding resource because of the poorly chosen name. What I am trying to do is open a pipe to another process/program to use as input to the processing plot program I am writing. I found processing.org but that site is not very helpful. There is plenty of examples of reading from an Arduino from the serial port but I want to read from a program running on my laptop. Both the plot and data accumulator program in the same PC.

MacBook Pro 5.2 running OSX 10.5 Snow Leopard Disk /dev/sda - 500 GB / 465 GiB - ATA FUJITSU MJA2500B. I formatted my existing partitions with boot camp in OSX to delegate 32 Gig to a space where I intended to install Ubuntu 10.1 along side OSX. I installed Ubuntu 10.1 and now my dual boot option has vanished and the following is what I'm getting from test disk:

I can recover my old partition configuration and not loose any data, as the lines are blurring on the related forums for this exact situation and my desire is to not make things worse with "trial and error".

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on an old small form factor PC with an AMD Sempron 2400, 1GB RAM, and an nVidia 5200 graphics card 128MB. OK, so a low-spec machine (but that's the great thing about Linux right? Don't need high-end h/w) but it works just fine, except that it can't play full HD (1920x1080) MPEG-4 video. Very jerky and lots of dropped frames. Same in both Movie Player and VLC.
I can't afford to increase the RAM and as it's a SFF I can't just swap the mobo and CPU for something faster so I'm wondering whether getting a higher spec graphics card would make any difference?I'm using the nVidia proprietary binary driver (latest version) and searching the forums I found a post where someone said that the nVidia driver needs at least a 512MB card for HD video.A colleague has a higher spec nVidia card (7600 IIRC) that he'll sell me, but before I spend any money, is this likely to improve things? How much does the graphics card affect performance, or is it simply a case of the machine overall just isn't high enough spec?

One thing that really bothers me about Slackware is the lack of unified, well maintained, and up-to-date documentation, but what keeps me coming back is the outstanding community. I see a lot of community contributions floating around on these forums, but they often get buried in all the questions and other posts people create. I know there's a search feature, but sometimes it's fun to browse an organized list of the community's work and see if I find anything fun or interesting.
Back when I used Arch Linux, one of my favorite stops at the forums was the Community Contributions section. The FreeBSD forums also have a section for user-contributed HOWTOse should have a section like this. Call it "Contributions" and place it by the "Installation" section at the top of this forum. It would provide a great place for users to check out what the other slackers have come up with without making a thread of their own to ask (which will probably result in many duplicate threads) or digging up an ancient thread.The only new threads allowed there could be a HOWTO, a new process or method a user discovered, or a user-made script/program/etc. Of course, other users should be able to comment with their replies for suggestions and/or improvements.

We've been using CentOS on our servers for many years, and remain happy customers. Been considering also using CentOS for desktops, since there's some advantages in standardisation. Also wondering whether CentOS really does belong on desktop. Perhaps its instructive that there's no "Desktop" section in these CentOS forums. Maybe a message buried there.
I'm finding that CentOS 5.6 desktop can do most things we need, except support Ipod connection for podcasts.
FLOSS weekly and SecurityNow are part of regular entertainment. gpodder is good in other 'nixes, but seems difficult to install in CentOS. Should I pursue this, or keep using another distro for daily desktops?

I posted a new thread about this the other day and somehow the thread disappeared too. what do I need to do?
