I have a Netopia 3000 Series Internet Gateway [URL] & windows 7(laptop) & ubuntu 9.10.
- My laptop connects to it wireless and my ubuntu via ethernet cable.
- I am trying to setup file sharing and printing. How do I go about in making them ping each other? the networking side.
I logged in the router & check and windows has ip 192.168.100 & ubuntu has 192168.1.2
I have a wired lan at home with 2 XP boxes connecting to a router to a DSL modem. I want to network my laptop, running only fedora os, for file sharing, printing and internet access. I will be using the laptop probably exclusively for creating/maintaining a Drupal-based (LAMP) e-commerce site to replace our old one for our small family business.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have tried to set up file sharing using ssh, samba with no luck. I now have it set up using NFS the only thing is it is just one way and I need it both ways. I was wondering if I installed the same packages on the other pc if I could make this work both ways.
The command I used on the first pc was:
sudo apt-get install nfs-kernel-server nfs-common portmap
And on the other pc the command was:
sudo apt-get install nfs-common portmap
Or is there a better way?
Im using WPA with a TKIP pre-shared key...Can a client pc im sharing my key with access my files if im not file sharing? Router config?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI put together a 3 PC cluster approx. 6 years ago with Redhat, at that time I was in Grad. School. Now I am in a small company and we are planning to go for a cluster setup. I have chosen to go with Centos5.
The last time around I used NFS, RSH etc. for file sharing, communication etc. Would it be OK for me to go with the same stuff or some new software/technology has come in.
The Centos cluster setup is for high-performance computing.
I am trying to set up a LAN with some basic file and printer sharing, as well as either a VPN or FTP server. I am setting up a server for an office with about 4 computers and one remote computer at a home office. I would like the server to back up a selected group of folders on all of the computers as well as share some printers between them all as well. If all of the other computers are windows computers will Ubuntu work for something like this? I would also like to host a website and e-mail server as well if the server is not loaded down too much. I know I can get windows server to work, but I would like to use something else if possible.

I wanted to use ubuntu as my servers OS but after reading some of the documentations I come to realize there is no X server in the server OS. I am OK with doing everything in terminal but would prefer to do some things in a graphic interface. Am I able to install the Xfree86 and be able to configure some stuff through that? Also the machine I am building for the server is not a true server machine just a really fast computer with lots of memory and space. The specs are a 3.1 AMD 64bit processor, 16gig ram, 2x 1TB hdd 7200rpm sata.
If the X server isn't a possibility on the server OS, I have read you can install all the server repositories on the Desktop Editions. Would that be a better option for me? Here is what I would like the server to do. I am going to be running quick books on the server with 1 workstation that is dedicated to it. We have 3 workstations and 3 users. We also would like to implement a Shared filing system and print server. Eventually when our current contract with our web host expires we would like to migrate the base website (not the ecom side) to this server.

I am trying the command smb://192.168.*.* from my MacBook & \192.168.*.* but when I enter "kris" & password: "******" it keep's on coming up "Incorrect Username &/or Password"

Backround I am attempting to setup a server in my house mostly(for the first time) for backups and file sharing. It is important to me that file permissions are preserved. So its my understanding that I must use idmapd in order for this to work. As of now I'm only working with the linux distros while osx will be dealt with once these two work together. portmapper is up and running, along with lockd on both machines. Firewalls are also down on both machines for now. The server side was all setup using the GUI interface with no extra options selected. Problem When attempting to "mount -t nfs4 10.0.0.2/$sharedfolder /mnt" I get an error operation not permitted with no error printing in /var/log/message. If I use "mount -t -o nolock nfs4 10.0.0.2/$sharedfolder /mnt" it mounts just fine. Ive checked both machines multiple times to make sure that lockd is up and running. In the idmapd.conf file I the domain as "localdomain" for both machines but I doubt that is right; like I stated above this is my first attempt at a server. I'm assuming the problem is a whole missing step that involves some kind of id mapping server I need to setup.
I am using an virtual machine. where I need to ping from one machine to another. earlier I was able to ping. But after going to google.com once, I cannot ping back to this machine.
But if I gave ping -I eth1 <IP> then I can ping.
I cannot install any package, so tell me solution which includes not installing any package.
I'm going to setup a File and Printer Sharing in my little home network... 3 Computers actively connected to the Web through a single ADSL2+ Wireless Router (number of Computers will increase later) At the moment 2 of the computers are running Fedora 10 and 1 running Windows XP...
Now i want to setup the 3 machines to use 1 printer which is connected to one of the Fedora 10 machines, and i want File Sharing to be enabled so each machine can easily view each others shared files and also be able to print when ever needed (ofcourse the machine with the printer will have to be on for the printing process to happen) I've installed Samaba on each Fedora Machine, enabled sharing but i dont seem to be able to view the Windows machine or each other....
IM completly new to fedora but decided to give it a try after using ubuntu for a while,I have everything setup apart from sharing and im been fiddling for a while now.

I already did this with a wired Ubuntu 9.10 desktop and my Vista laptop but for some reason my Ubuntu 9.10 wireless and Vista wireless aren't as easy. They are all on the same workgroup "MAGIC" and I can see my ubuntu shares on the Vista computer but can't see the Vista shares on the ubuntu computer. In ubuntu I go to network>windows network>MAGIC but it times out at the MAGIC workgroup part and says 'unable to mount'.

I have a similar problem. My ubuntu box is set up as a dhcp router for my Xbox360, my xbox can get ip and DNS information from the computer, but it doesn't seem to get the right info. The ip address it gets assigned is out of the range I've set in etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf.

2 are ubuntu, 2 are XP. ubuntu machine 1 has printers. I managed to print a document from ubuntu machine 2 to ubuntu machine 1 via the network; however ubuntu machine 1's shared docs dont show up on any of the PCs. I am unable to see ubuntu machine 1 on any of the windows pcs, cant find the printers or any sign of the PC actually being there, but pinging the PC is no problem. Basically network printing from ubuntu 2 to ubuntu 1 works fine; but ubuntu 2 cant see ubuntu 1s shareddocs and vice versa. The windows PCs don't seem to even know that the ubuntu PCs exist. no printing or sharing
I can connect to the internet and browse. I'm wired and using DHCP on a Windows network. Updating Ubuntu or downloading programs takes hours for 52MB of updates. Why? I read some articles that mention Network Manager needs to be enabled at the .conf file. Can I edit this using GUI or command line only?

My machines are on a public wire (not an issue really as I don't have sensitive stuff on there), however I'd like to learn how to secure the server, but yet still get access from my Fedora box. View 3 Replies View RelatedSo, I have 2 computers both running fedora 12. I have installed NFS, all of the nfs utilities, and the system-config-nfs thing. I have unblocked the ports in the firewall. I am certain that NFS is running (or at least that when I nmap myself, an nfs port is open).However, when I go into nautilus and go to network, it shows windows network, but no other computers.If I run nmap on localhost, or on my OWN IP, it shows that it's up. and NFS is up. but when I NMap the other computer, it's hidden and blocking ping probes (though using nmap -PN will penetrate that mask, and show that it too has NFS open.)
So, how can I get these two computers to recognize each other? or am I doing this whole thing all wrong? I'm just trying to set up file sharing.

I just installed 9.10 and I tried to share specific folders by right clicking and selecting share. Not a problem.
However when I goto a Windows machine I see the share but cannot connect, says incorrect login/ password. I used the same login/ pass for the linux box and I created a new user and I still get the same results. What am I doing wrong?
I want to use the GUI for this please. When I edit the smb.conf I don't see the share.
I have two desktop computers on the same home network and I am unable to share files between the two. Both have access to the network. One is able to file and printer share using SAMBA and a windows 7 laptop. The other machine is unable to either do file sharing via Samba or SSL file sharing between the two Ubuntu machines.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a small home/office network, which currently consists of a very old mac running osx10.4, a windoze 7 laptop and an ubuntu 10.04/windoze vista laptop, along with a homebrew setup on a wii which understands smb. I'm in the process of setting up an additional ubuntu PC which will, among other things act as a file and web server, mainly for web development and for sharing files, music and videos.
Up until now I've just run everything on SMB, and I will have to set samba up on the new server, but I would prefer to use a different protocol for the ubuntu and mac systems, as SMB doesn't recognise/create file permissions properly and it takes a while sometimes to notice new files in folders it's recently looked in.
I have encountered many problems in Ubuntu, many of which I have been able to figure out how to fix myself (except a few tricky ones). Found a new one recently that I just cannot figure out. I have set up file sharing on my network between two systems running Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), one a desktop and the other a laptop. I Installed the proper packages on both systems, and it seemed to be working properly. However, on the laptop, when I try to mount or access the public-files of the desktop or laptop I receive the following error:

I have 4 computers/users and we need to put all the files on a central server. The server is running Ubuntu 10.04. What is the best way for these 4 XP users to see the files that will be stored on the server?
Or basically, how will I either share or map the files *from* Ubuntu *to* XP? Also, the users will be reading, writing, creating and deleting files on the server.
My wife and I activated the 'Personal File Sharing' on our two Fedora #9 laptops. We can exchange photos and text files via our "public" folders, just fine. Entire setup took less than 20 minutes. We have not been able to get the Fedora #14 version of 'Personal File Sharing' to work using same, online and 'in system', help directions for both the F#9 and F#14. After four eves of looking I have not found any more detailed, install/activate help files anywhere. I can't ask my system manager because that's us. At this point the only thing I can think of is that there may be some part of the F#14 security structure that needs to be addressed and tweaked.
