Ubuntu Networking :: Auto Run Script Whenever Interface Connection State Changes?

Aug 14, 2010

Upon boot of my system, I auto run a script that customizes the routing table (i.e., route -n). However, after the system is already booted up and has been running, if a network connection is dropped and re-added, like if one of the several network cables to the machine is temporarily disconnected or other, then the routing table is modified -- I assume by network manager. Presently, I need to manually re-run my script to re-customize the routing table.

I would like to have the script just run whenever there is any change to the connection state of interfaces. Anyone know how to tie in some kind of event trigger that can execute a script upon change in interfaces connection state (i.e., detect change in connection state and run the script)?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Shutting Down Interface On Link Down State?

May 17, 2011

I have a problem. I want interface to shut down once there is a link down state detected. If you set up eth0, and then plug cable out, eth0 stays up, just loosing the RUNNING flag. I want it to go down completely.

I've stumbled upon netplugd, and I've tried using it. It is a daemon that detects states in (link up) and out (link down) from kernel netlink interface. If I have this daemon up, it detects that link is down (eg. cable removed from interface), and it runs correctly /etc/netplug.d/netplug eth0 out. That script then runs ifdown eth0. And that's ok.

But very next moment netplugd runs /etc/netplug.d/netplug eth0 probe, and probe section of that script runs "ip link set eth0 up", which then turns interface back on!I've tried commenting out that line, but then new problem occurs - after the link is up, netplug cannot figure that out and bring back interface. Has anyone have this kind of problem, and any viable solution with netplug?

Networking :: Ethernet Interface Leaves RUNNING State After Some Time

Jul 29, 2011

I am using RHEL6 on a server with 3 interfaces.

eth0 is connecting via a Cisco switch to the outer world and eth1 and eth2 to internal networks.

eth1 and eth2 are working without problems all the time, however I have the following incident with eth0: although it is RUNNING, and after it works for some time (like some hours), it then becomes incapable of sending/receiving traffic. Here are more details, after the interface exits the RUNNING state:

[root@mgt ~]# ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr E4:1F:13:6C:87:74
inet addr:9.162.91.26 Bcast:9.162.91.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::e61f:13ff:fe6c:8774/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

[Code]....

I am wondering whether there this is because there is not traffic for some time and so the interface goes to idle. Is there any parameter I can tweak in RHEL6 to force the interface to remain RUNNING even in the absence of traffic (although I would be expecting that some 802.1 packets would be periodically flowing from the switch to the interface)?

Fedora Networking :: FC11 Not Auto Detecting Ethernet Interface

Jun 10, 2009

On FC10, when system boots up, it would auto detect (from DHCP) and configure eth0.

This does not happen on FC11, but I can manually configure the interface. The entries in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 are identical on both OS releases.

Don't know if this is related, but when I run System->Administration->Bootloader, it fails system-config-boot - missing module kudzu.

Essentially, I want to re-install and/or move to another machine and want to the new install to reflect the system as it currently stands.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Auto Connection To Wired Ethernet On Restart?

Nov 30, 2010

Just noticed that auto connection to my wired ethernet is not being established after restarts I'm making. Never recall this in the past. I do get an auto connect when I shutdown and restart. I'm using 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx.

Also have noticed that nearly every upgrade over the past week or so is calling for restart to complete the upgrade. Can there be any unwanted problems in doing several upgrades over a period of several days before doing the restart? I'd like to think not.

As you can imagine these two issues together are causing some lost time.

Networking :: Ethernet Auto-connect / Auto-sense Doesn't Work

Feb 3, 2011

I have noticed that a common issue to several distros is the fact that the networking subsystem doesn't automatically detect the link if an ethernet connection is disconnected and then re-connected to the NIC after boot. If the ethernet cable is connected after the system is up and running, nothing happens - ethtool eth0 shows link detected: no, and you have to restart the network service to let the NIC know that there is in fact a link, and actually connect. I have a Fedora14 (KDE) box with a brand new Asus motherboard with embedded NIC. Everything works great except the auto-detect of a freshly connected ethernet connection if the link is down to begin with.

Am I missing a ethernet link sentinel utility or something, or is this just the way linux works? I have done plenty of research on plenty of posts, and it seems this is a common problem, with no solution other than manually or programatically restarting the network service in a script to detect the link after a disconnect.

Ubuntu :: VNC Auto-allow Connection

I have a few computers set up in my room, but only 2 monitors. Therefore, I typically connect via VNC to use these computers, which works great on my local network.

My problem is that, after Ubuntu restarts, it requires the password for the login keyring before it will allow a VNC connection request. EVENTHOUGH I have it set up to automatically accept incoming connections.

Therefore, before I can VNC to any of these machines after a reboot, (for software updates, etc.) I have to connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, just to type in my password.

Opening the edit connections window tells me that there a wired connection called Auto eth0 that is set to never, and that is all that I can find. I hunted for other forums on this and found a few but none with a successful resolution.

Networking :: Netfilter's -state INVALID Triggered By Foreign Dual WAN Routers?

Dec 22, 2010

Recently I am logging the packets that are supposedly INVALID and I found out that I am dropping a lot of packets that seem legitimate (in the sense that they are clients that are allowed to contact us).

Code:
:invalid - [0:0]
-A invalid -j LOG --log-prefix "[DROP INVALID] : " --log-tcp-options --log-ip-options
-A invalid -j DROP
-A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT

[Code]...

I would like to know If I can tell a complaining client that his dual-WAN solution is not behaving properly.Should such a dual WAN-router spoof its IP to the one that initiated the connection? And what happens if these packets are not dropped? Will they be accepted by the application or does it depend on the application? It sounds like a security risk if it does. It seems to me those packets will be ignored anyway by the application Netfilter's manual says that it's safe to drop these packets.

Blueman doesn't detect any network service between the two computers unless I start PAND on one of them and then it detects the NAP service. That, only after I enable the NAP/Workgroup services on the Services submenu in Blueman. However, it doesn't work neither with the NM plugins or without them (dhclient and that other one I can't remember the name of).

Any clues over here? I'm using pand 4.91 and blueman.
