I'm troubling setting up my dhcp3-server.Although I've configured "option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.1" in my dhcpd.conf my windows-xp-clients dns-server address is set to 192.186.1.1.This is strange! All other things seem to work correctly. This is my dhcpd.conf:
Code:

I have a Centos5.4 64bit laptop, having an eth0 and a wlan0. I connect this wired eth0 to a wall socket to access Internet via DHCP (eg the assigned address is like 192.168.192.xx). I do not have access to the ADSL router. How can I turn this laptop into a Wifi access point to allow, say my Ipad or any wireless-only client, to access the Internet thru this laptop ?
That is, communication between iPad to laptop is wifi(ad-hoc connection ??), laptop to the ADSL router is wired LAN. The laptop need to have some bridging build in ? If you can refer me some concepts, then I can follow up from there.
Or better yet, has anybody does this before ?

Environment: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, 64 bit I was doing some maintenance on the machine and tried to delete everything under /var/lib/hudson. By mistake, I deleted everything under /var/lib. I know, I know, I must have taken an extra dose of stupid pills. Questions: Is there any way to recover without a full rebuild of the machine? Could I install Karmic to a VM, install all the same packages, and then copy over the /var/lib directory? Maybe a better question to start off is, which directories need attention (and what type) and which directories are not needed? Very soon before the delete, I did a directory listing in /var/lib. Here is what was in there:

I was trying to sort out some problems I was having with synaptic and in a <sarcasm>slash of brilliance</sarcasm> I renamed my libc.so.6 to something else. Since then any command I type throws up:Code:apt-get: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directoryI can't get anything done. Nautilus/package manager/nothing fires up.

had upgraded from slackware 13 to 13.1 and finally 13.37.After this I noticed that 'dmesg' could only be executed as root. So inorder for a user to execute 'dmesg' I executed 'ln -s /bin/dmesg /usr/bin/dmesg'.What happened next is the symlink was created but the dmesg executable was deleted.I do not want to reinstall the OS (very time consuming on a P3 with 512MB RAM) so I want to know which package provides dmesg so that I can reinstall it.The dmesg man page indicated that klogd will provide the package but then when I reinstalled it it was a no go.

I was accessing my box externally (ssh) and accidentally deleted my crontab. I never used crontab before and issued the command "crontab -d" instead of "crontab -e" to edit and add my cronjobpretty useless because I had no back up of my crontab of course First question, is there going to be any direct issue on my box because of the crontab being erased ? (I am assuming so but do not know what type of problems..) Lastly, would I be lucky enough so that there is a way to recover my crontab ? (having gone through Google and whatnote, I doubt it)

I was playing around with the default panel that has the power icon (wrong lingo maybe) and the network/sound icons, etc.I deleted some items including the power icon and now for the life of me can't find it in the panel applets list in lubuntu. Is there a way to restore the default panel with the settings as when I first installed lubuntu.I also played with some spacings and other settings so would rather just get it back to normal/restore it vs add all the items back on and then play with the spacings again.

Web Browsers and email clients unable to access the Internet.
Able to get software and updates with no problem.
The IVP6 setting is ignored in the Network Configuration. I have triggered it both ways.
As for the firewall configuration, well it freezes at the splash screen when invoked.
Fedora 12 is the first spin, since Fedora 9, that I was able to get any updates. Versions 10 and 11 could not access the internet with anything, no matter what was attempted.
BTW, I am using Mandriva 2010 to get through here.

I've spent the entire day trying to install virtualbox. My dkms is newest version, my gcc is newest version, my headers seem to be in order, and it still won't install. BUT that's not my problem. As I was trying repeatedly to install, I noticed it said "group vboxusers already exists". So brilliant me, thinking that was my problem, went and deleted it, and then headed to synaptics to uninstall virtualbox (again!) so that I could try to install it (again!), only to find myself locked out.
The exact message I get is
Code:
Unable to get exclusive lock
This usually means that another package management application (like apt-get or aptitude) is already running. Please close that application first.I've worked really hard on this install, and don't want to start over with a fresh one unless it's absolutely necessary.

I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following
----On the phone---
-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.
-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.
-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"
----On Ubuntu 10.04---
-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server
-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.
-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.
-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd
-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).
-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"
-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.
-Apply policies and start the firewall.
------------
After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:
1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.
2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.
So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection

The question is related to one single desktop machine, with 3 users.
1) the superuser (me)
2) My elder son
3) My younger son.
As superuser, I can access the network (internet router) via "Wicd" perfectly well.
Both Client users can't.
Do I have to give them special user priviledges? If yes, which ones?

I've never had this much trouble, but maybe it's because I have not setup a dhcp3-server in some time.
My server has three NIC cards. The Internet connection is on eth2, and I'm trying to get connect other computers to the server through eth0.
It's suppose to be relatively easy, unless I'm assigning specifics, right?
Code:
#
# Sample configuration file for ISC dhcpd for Debian
#
# Attention: If /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf exists, that will be used as

I have an ubuntu 7.10 ICS server that works fine and I have routed my traffic using firestarter to my windows PC. my server's IP is 192.168.0.1 and my windows client is 192.168.0.2. now, I have bought another PC and I want to assign 192.168.0.3 to it and connect it to ubuntu server. in windows, all I needed to do was to connect the first client to first network card, second one to second network card, bridge two connections in my server, assign 192.168.0.1 to the network bridge in my server and 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 to my clients, then share my internet connection. I also could access shared files in any computer from all of them. can I have the same functionality with a linux server?
I'll make a list to make it easy if you don't wanna read the whole post:
things I want:
1. assign one ip address to multiple interfaces in linux, making them bonded.
2. sharing the internet connection with both clients.
3. ability to use all shared files over a network.

I have been trying off and on for weeks to share my Internet connection with a Windows XP client (netbook). While I can ping back and forth between the two machines, in the form of a ping test, I can't get to the Internet from the client, no matter what I try.
My Ubuntu 9.10 desktop (host) has two NICs, eth0 and eth1. eth0 connects to the Internet. eth1 goes to the Windows XP client. Regardless of whether I use an Ethernet crossover cable or a standard cable, I can get the two machines to talk to each other, but no further.
Things I already tried:
-Tried setting eth1 to "shared" mode in NetworkManager on the host. I set the Win XP machine to automatically acquire an address & DNS. Didn't work.
-Manually configured the IP settings on both machines, like this:
client:
address 10.0.0.2
subnetmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 10.0.0.1
[Code]....
Despite all of the above, I still cannot share the host's Internet connection with the client. I don't understand where the client's traffic is going, and why I can't share the connection. As far as I know, I am not doing any sort of firewalling or blocking on the host, so there is no obvious reason that the client's traffic simply disappears. I just know that whenever I open a Web browser on the client, all I ever get is error messages.
I have had no issues setting up a shared connection when the host runs Windows XP, so I am pretty sure there is no broken hardware causing the problem. Why can't I share the connection under Ubuntu?

I have an old Linksys WUSB54G USB wireless card lying around, and occasionally I like to use it as an access point for my laptop. For assigning IP addresses I use dhcp3-server. The only problem is that the server attempts to start itself up on boot, which I do not want- I want to start it up manually if I need it. how to disable this service on boot?

Over the last several days, I've been trying like hell to share my (wired) Internet connection with a netbook, running Windows XP, attached via crossover cable to my desktop's extra NIC (eth0). The eth0 link is established, but I can't get to the Internet from the Windows XP machine.I can ping one machine from the other, but any bits sent from the Win XP netbook mysteriously disappear when trying to reach any website.
There is no firewall running on the Ubuntu machine as far as I know. Windows Firewall is likewise disabled on the Windows XP machine. The Ubuntu machine connects to the Internet through another wired NIC, eth1.In Windows XP parlance, what I am trying to do would be called "bridging," where eth0 and eth1 would be the two parts of the bridge. In fact I already made it work, with both the netbook and my desktop running Windows XP. It took about 5 minutes.I can't believe what a huge pain this has been in Ubuntu. I'm pretty much ready to give up. There seems to be no way to get an Ubuntu system and a Windows XP system to share an Internet connection.

Just set up Evolution to get my emails from 1and1.co.uk and hotmail. I ticked the box 'leave on server'.Whilst in the mess of trying to configure two email accounts (using rules and folders), I deleted all my 1and1 emails locally. They remain on the server, but I want them now in my client inbox and Evolution seems to ignore those emails. Is there any way I can refresh evolution, so that it doesn't treat these emails any differently to new ones that I retrieve?

I'm using Fedora Core 11 and the client OpenVPN on the network-manager into a segmented infrastructure. It works well.
My laptop is on a dmz wireless Zone 192.168.3.0/24 and access Internet through a firewall via a front-end zone 192.168.65.0/24 with wlan0 interface.
But my laptop can access on a back-end zone 192.168.2.0.24 to a server.
When I start the OpenVPN tunnel, I cannot access on my back-end zone because the kernel routing table is modified (all the traffic is routed through the tun vpn interface)
If I define a static route like route add -host 192.168.2.x gw 192.168.3.2 where x is my file serveur, I cannot connect to this server because the routing is make through the tun interface and not by the wlan0 who can access on is gateway
I want to know where changing the kernel routing table file to access on the Internet and on my back-end zone in a same time.
