Networking :: Using Ethernet To Power WiFi Network And Setting Up WiFi?

Aug 23, 2009

I have an old PowerBook G4 that I would like to use as a 'dummy' computer for learning wireless penetration (WEP/WPA attacks) more effectively. I had been using a wireless router, but I gave it away I can use Mac OS X to share an ethernet connection over wifi, but this is _very_ un-configurable. You get two options only, WEP and a key-length. So, I would like to install someway to make this wireless connection more configurable.

Ubuntu Networking :: Hardware Button For Wifi Has To Be Enabled At Every Power On?

Jul 26, 2011

After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 via the online upgrading method I had much trouble getting wireless to work but after following the instructions at .Driver/bcm43xx it burst into life, that is until I powered off and now I have to sudo modprobe b43 before the hardware button for the wifi will work and and then I am able to get online. This is for every power on session!! Once enabled it will switch on and off via the hardware button and the light is operational. Before the sudo modprobe b43 the buttonoes something as evidenced by sudo rfkill list after each press of the button. Is there any way to have the command sudo modprobe b43 inserted somewhere in the power on sequence? This was a working function on 10.10!

Ubuntu Networking :: Create 'Ethernet-over-IP'(or Tunnel) Interface?

Nov 28, 2010

I'm trying to create EoIP interface on ubuntu so i can create a simple tunnel to my mikrotik router. Is there anyone know how or even done that? If EoIP is not possible, is there any other simple way?

I had already read and thought about doing it with OpenVPN, but when I read the community documentation for OpenVPN on ubuntu 10.10, I fear it won't connect the tunnel to mikrotik OpenVPN server, since OpenVPN on ubuntu uses 2 certificate and 2 key files(as i read on the docs), but mikrotik configuration, i can see only 1 certificate can be applied on. This confuses me and make me decide to use EoIP(but i can't find any tutorial/docs about it). I don't actually need the encryption and security, i just need to create a tunnel for ubuntu and mikrotik.

Ubuntu Networking :: Create A Nickname/alias/logical Name For An Interface?

Jul 28, 2011

Basically I am looking for a simple way to create a universal nickname/alias for a interface. We ship servers that have upto 6 NICs on them. The user can have those NIC configured as either ethN, bondN or vlanN interfaces. As we need to provide NIC status information we would like to be able to run commands such as

Code:
ifconfig INTERFACE1
that would map to whatever the user had already configured.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 4-pin Firewire With Audio Interface - Don't Provide Any Power

Dec 12, 2010

I had originally planned on buying a USB 2.0 audio interface to use with my first home recording studio, but it sounds like Linux support is pretty horrible for these devices. On the other hand, the FFADO project seems to be very promising, so now I'm looking at getting a firewire interface. The only problem is that all I have on my laptop (sony vaio VGN-N365E) is a little 4-pin firewire port. If I'm not mistaken, those don't provide any power. Will this work with any interfaces (maybe one that has it's own external power adapter)? Or is there an adapter I can get to convert it to a full firewire port and add power?

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 Has A Much Lower Signal Than Mac OSX?

Jan 9, 2011

I installed 10.04 1st by making a partition with bootcamp on MacOSX.Then I formatted the partition according to Ubuntu's instructions. I didn't install rEFIt, because I prefer to just hit the alt (option) key.I made the necessary adjustments according to URL...Community Ubuntu Documentation - and everything seemed to be working fine.I upgraded to Maverick and everything seemed to be working fine aswell. But then I noticed, that the wireless signal keeps failing and I'm asked to put the password again and again..

I don't think this is due to the upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10, but I just noticed it recently, maybe because of the air humidity, the signal was stronger a few days a go.. don't know!!Is there anything I can do?Perhaps install a new driver, or another wificlient, like Wifi-Radar??

Ubuntu :: Network Interface Not Visible To Programs After WiFi Upgrade(10.4)?

Jul 15, 2010

On ubuntu 10.4, I upgraded my laptop from a fluky Broadcom 4322 wireless card to a yummy Intel 5300. The system recognized the card as far as lspci and lshw were concerned, but it was disabled. I used "sudo ifconfig wlan0 up" to get it active, removed wicd and installed nmanager, and I could access the internet via web browser and mail.

The issue is that other programs (kismet, wireshark, zenmap, anything that I use at my job) do not recognize the new wlan0 interface at all. I've uninstalled completely from synaptic then reinstalled things like wireshark, but under interfaces I get nothing, not even eth0. Nothing looks askew in syslog or the relevant lshw/lspci searches. Does anyone have an idea on this? The Intel 5300 is rolling along without a hiccup so I doubt the issue is there

Debian Hardware :: Cut Power To WiFi Adapter On Startup?

Aug 26, 2015

I dual-boot Jessie with Windows 10, and I recently guessed that the 'fast boot' (hibernate on shutdown) feature of Windows doesn't properly shut down the RTL8188EU NIC plugged into my PC. So when I boot into Debian, it isn't properly recognised by the driver and I have to completely shut down the PC to make it work.

Is there a way to automatically cut the power to the wireless NIC on startup and then reenable it so I don't have to do this?

Networking :: ICMP Got Lower Priority?

Mar 16, 2010

I run a linux box as a gateway behind a satellite modem. The internet link over the satellite modem is only 1mbit so the usage often reaches 100% when someone is downloading/uploading something. I am seeing my ping return time jump from 700ms to 6000ms if someone tries to upload a file (by sending a attachment in a email etc). The satellite operator is saying this is normal, but I have my doubts.

Has ICMP got a lower priority? Should I really be seeing this behaviour? I understand that if it was a TCP packet then it would just be queued until the previous acknowledgement has been received. And if it was a UDP packet then it would have been dropped, but how does ICMP deal with these situations during heavy traffic?
