Networking :: Add Network Attached Storage As Download Path

Feb 28, 2010

I have got a Arch Linux laptop running KDE. I have recently purchased a Dlink DNS 323 network attached storage and have installed Debian Lenny on it. I have been connecting to it via ssh and have created a network folder on Dolphin for easy GUI access ( using ssh protocol). However I cannot seem to figure out how to download stuff directly to the network drives. In firefox, it does not allow me to browse to the Dlink when I try to specify the download path.

Ubuntu :: Can't Uncompress A File In A Network Attached Storage?

Jul 5, 2011

I have a fairly simple setup for my Network attached storage. I have a 1TB external hard drive connected to my Asus RT-N16 router through USB. I have enabled file sharing in the router, and thus the hard drive shows up on the network as a shared folder. No hassles, I can read and write to it.

Because I want to use this hard drive for networked backups, I tried to get it to mount on boot with fstab. Here is the line in my fstab file :

Code:
//192.168.1.1/SharedFolder /media/SharedFolder smbfs guest,_netdev 0 0

It mounts fine, no problems, and once again I'm able to read and write files to it. The problem occurs when I try to access the mounted drive and uncompress an archive file for the duplicity backup program. It gives me a list of messages showing that all the files inside the archive failed to uncompress because of error messages like these :

[Code]...

If I try to extract the same archive by manually going to Network > RT-N16 (Router) > Shared Folder, it extracts fine. But I need this folder to be mounted on boot because I use it very frequently. I tried changing smbfs to cifs and it still didn't work. Please not that my knowledge of samba, network storage and file systems is very basic. I tried searching the internet for more information about this but wasn't able to find much information that pertains to this particular problem. Hoping the linux pros here could give me some pointers ..

Fedora Networking :: Home Directories Reside On An EMC Network Storage Device?

Feb 1, 2011

I use CentOS for the servers I am responsible for. This time, I inherited a piece of hardware that CentOS refused to boot up on, so I installed Fedora Core 14. I have NIS and autofs working -- mostly. The home directories reside on an EMC network storage device. The problem is that when I login as a regular user, all the files under the home directory are owned by nobody/nobody, instead of user/group. I believe this has something to do with NFSv3 vs. v4, but I have yet to find the right trick to fix it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Share NTFS Storage Partitions On HDD Over Network With Windows 7?

I have a desktop with Ubuntu and I've set up Samba to share files with my Windows 7 laptop. I can access my home folder just fine except for my NTFS storage partitions on the desktop's HDD and my home folder's Downloads folder (which times out whenever I try and open it).

Is there an alternative way to share files between Linux and Windows 7?

Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up LAN - \Lstoragemusic Is Not Accessible - The Network Path Was Not Found

I would like to know if there is a fairly easy "How To" for setting up my home network. I have 2 XP SP3 computers and 2 Linux with ver. 9.10. The XP boxes can see each other and share files and folders. I can see from an XP box one of the Ubuntu machines, but can't access any of the files or folders.

I get the following when I try: \Lstoragemusic is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.

Ubuntu :: Set A Home Server To Be A Network Attached Drive?

Feb 14, 2011

I am trying to set a Ubuntu home server to be a Network Attached Drive, a Media server, and Backup server. All of the computers (mostly windows 7 machines) can see and connect with the shared ubuntu folders, and read write and execute files into the folders. The problem is when programs are installed onto the server they operating systems cannot have "Full control", or change the owner of a file.

This is an issue when using the Ubuntu shared folders as remote hard drive locations because when Windows goes to run the files it keeps popping up with the "Open file - Security Warning" preventing files from being natively run.

Software :: Mount Network Attached Hard Drive As Non-Root User

May 1, 2010

I have Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid installed on my new laptop and I'm trying to get my backup script up and running again. I had a script that would connect using smbmount with my normal user account and then mirror my home folder to the external network attached hard drive with rsync. It seems that rsync needs to be run as user account, not root, to work properly. Some of the setup info for getting this running in Kubuntu Karmic was from this article:

However, smbmnt does not exist in *buntu 10.04. Is there any other way to connect NAS drives as non-root user that is relatively secure? I spent all day yesterday struggling with this and still haven't found a solution.

I've been having an issue with samba; connecting to a share from my Windows 7 machine.

Note: Windows 7 firewall has been turned OFF.

When I try to connect to the share from windows I get this error "Windows cannot access \PROSPERITY/home/queenl" , below that the error details are "The network path was not found."

It seems to me that the syntax is not correct, hence in the error it states "\PROSPERITY/home/queenl"

I am able to print to the printer that is being shared by samba..

Below is a copy of my smb.conf file. I'm using swat to manage my smb.conf file.

So i tried to reinstall network manager but it didn't work, then something happened and i couldn't access my Xubuntu anymore so I decided to delete the partition and install Xubuntu 10.04. I still have the same problem. What should i do? I am sure it is not a problem with the adapter because it works on the Windows partition.

Slackware :: Setup A Networked HP C6280 All In One Device Attached To Network Via Cat5 Cable?

Jun 13, 2010

I am trying to setup a networked hP C6280 all in one device attached to my network via Cat5 cable. It has the IP 192.168.0.105 and I am experiencing problems with setting up HPLIP... I know I am not the only one to have this problem, but I cant find specific info for slackware and all the posts I've found on the web are outdated, often refering to slack 9 or having been posted prior to 2006....

I use Slackware -Current (prior to 13.1 release), CUPS V1.4.3 and HPLIP V3.10.2. When I try to setup my device in HPLIP (hp-setup), I select "network/ethernet/wireless device", then HPLIP discovers my printer @ 192.168.0.105 (like I expect), and then I click "add printer" and I get:

Code:
Printer queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again. And then the setup exits. Of course restarting CUPS will not I reinstalled HPLIP and no luck. I can setup the device in CUPS, but if I proceed this way, I will not be able to select the attached scanner as a resource in XSANE.In other words, if I setup the all-in-one device with CUPS, it is considered only a simple printer..I remember that I had the same problem with Slackware 12.2 about 14 months ago, but cannot remember how I fixed it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Bizarre Wired Network - Download Updates And Firefox

Jun 3, 2010

I have a dual-boot Compaq CQ60-420US laptop. It can connect wirelessly in Vista without a problem. I have not yet figured out how to connect it wirelessly in Ubuntu (10.04, Lucid), but that's not the problem here. The problem here is on the wired side. Whether I boot in Vista or Ubuntu, I cannot get it to go online. Ubuntu says that the Auto eth2 connection is established; I am able to disconnect and reconnect it normally; but I can't download updates and Firefox can't connect to CNN.com. Likewise, in Vista, diagnostics find no problem; everything seems to be fine; but no connection.

I thought the problem might be the laptop's ethernet port, so I bought a Trendnet TU2-ET100 USB-to-Ethernet adapter. It comes highly recommended; it seems to have installed successfully in Vista; it appears properly in Vista's Network Connections; its lights are blinking appropriately; and Ubuntu tells me that my Auto eth2 connection is established when I connect through that adapter. And yet still no connection to CNN.com and no downloads of updates in either OS.

I wondered if some other circuitry might be at issue, so I sent the laptop back to HP. They claim to have replaced the mobo. The symptoms remain unchanged before and after. I went through an extensive tech support call with HP. The last thing their technician could advise was to power cycle the laptop and router. The ethernet connection itself is good. I can unplug the cable from the laptop's ethernet port or the Trendnet unit, plug it into the desktop computer on which I am typing this note, and I'm connected with no problem.

I thought, well, maybe I have to have the laptop's wireless button on, even when I want to connect via wire, but that hasn't made a difference. I tried installing Windows drivers from the Trendnet website instead of from the CD; no joy. I suspect you will be as stumped as I am. I have gone through a lot of other people's comments. At this point, I am just interested in general possibilities. What, in theory, could be causing this?

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Separately Monitor The Download Traffic From Inside And Outside The Network

Sep 14, 2010

I am connected to a network with free traffic inside it and post-paid outer traffic. So I need a way to be able to separately monitor the download traffic from inside and outside the network. All the solutions I`ve found for now offer monitoring of ALL up/down traffic.

So, I want to get separate statistics on these:

1 — 81.89.188.0/23, 217.197.9.0/24
2. — 81.89.186.0/23
3. — 81.89.178.0/23
4. — 81.89.176.0/23
5. — 81.89.180.0/24
9. — 217.197.12.0/24

[Code]...

UPD: I`m connected to the internet through the network`s gate, so all the traffic comes through eth0. I wish to separate traffic incoming from the IPs on top from all other traffic

Networking :: Find A MAC Of Hardware Attached Via Ethernet Cable?

Apr 19, 2011

How can I find a MAC of hardware attached via ethernet cable? I have been working nicely with an industrial scanner that is controlled by a Linux PC via an ethernet cable, but the hard drive has died I need to get it working again. The problem is that the main PCB has a Realtek RTL8019AS ethernet controller chip: [URL] which I believe is used in the most basic way possible, applied straight off-the-shelf and unconfigured. To utilise the chip ARP commands are used to assign an IP address to the chips MAC address e.g. something like:

arp -s 192.168.2.5 00-05-a4-00-a8-f8

Unfortunately the actual MAC address was lost along with the HD Th only thing I could have a reasonable guess at is that the chip will have a default subnet of 255.255.0.0 or 255.255.255.0

General :: Mount A 'path' From The Network?

My situation is that I've got a desktop within my university domain named 'pc1'. There are several other machines in my office as well, e.g., named 'pc2'. Every time, when I want to run some of the codes written by my group, I need to use 'ssh' to connect 'pc2':

Code:
ssh -X pc2.cs.xxx.edu
cd /home/cs/group1

As my machine pc1 is under the same domain as pc2, is there a method to mount '/home/cs/group1' directly? (I've got the user name and password)

Then I can run the codes under '/home/cs/group1' directly on my machine.

I checked 'mount' command, but hasn't got a clue how to do it.
