I have a HP Pavilion dv4 that is 4 months old. Yesterday it suddenly seemed to restart then once I logged in it turned off. When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly. It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. It started loading once, but then shut down again. Every other time it stayed dead minus the lights

Is it possible to have the power button emulate the press of a key? On my media centre I have XBMC running and it doesn't recognise me pressing the power button. If I press S (on the keyboard) the shutdown menu pops up.

For some reason my button to turn the wireless on or off turned itself off. It's orange when off and blue when on. I tried rebooting but that didn't work. I need to turn it back on to get my wireless working again.

I am using Debian 7.8.0 (64-bit). I don't know what desktop environment I am using but it is the one that gets installed by default.
I have installed numlockx. Works fine in terms of turning Num Lock on automatically before the login screen. However, once logged in, Num Lock is automatically turned off. Is there a setting in Debian that I am missing so that Num Lock stays on all the time?
PS: Yes, I've turned on the Num Lock option in the BIOS!

I'm trying to burn the .ido of Mepis 11 to a DVD. I have a 4.7Gb DVD-R in the drive. Usually, I would just navigate to the .iso and select it, and K3b would do the rest. Now, when I do that, K3b does check the md5sum, and it's correct, but then it just sits there with the Start button greyed out.

You will not believe that. Such crazzy thing! When I first press the Shift key (in KDE session), the Numbers Lock function (LED) turn off. Then I have to press NumLock key twice to turn it on. First press has no effect. Second turn it on.
And another strange thing. I can disable this strange efect, if I manually turn NumLock off an then on.
I thing, I will rename Fedora to Pandora. Because there is more that little strange things. About 12 I counted. But there is no time and place to write all 12. Maybe another day.

There are two users on my Ubuntu 10.4 PC: myself and my wife - I'm the administrator/super user. For some strange reason, the lockscreen... shutdown button has suddenly disappeared from the top right of my wife's desktop - it's a circle with a short vertical line at the top. I've found a Shut Down button via 'Add to Panel', but it doesn't have quite the same functionality, e.g. it doesn't support switching to another user. Any idea how to get the lost button back?

Basically the caps lock button responds slower in Ubuntu than it does on Windows, leading my capitalization to REad LIke THIs. Should I give up and learn to use shift?

I just upgraded to 10.04 (and a new machine) from 8.04 and I can't seem to find a way to have the middle button on my mouse act as a double click like I had it on my old machine. I tried putting the input stanza from my old xorg.conf but then X would not come up. The new tab thing it does in Nautilus is driving me nuts. I see the xorg.conf isn't really used anymore, and there is something about making rules in udev but I can't seem to find the exact wording that I need to make that one rule. I would also like to disable the CAPS LOCK key if anyone knows how to do that without xorg.conf. Maybe someone can point me to a udev tutorial?

I have installed Debian 8.0.0 64bit with KDE 4.14.2.I managed to install Skype. But the video call didn't work. Actually when I'm receiving a video call it works, but I cannot initiate a video call. Then I installed libv4l-0 package (which has been installed to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l) and found here URL...) that I have to do something with this Code: Select allLD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype in order to make video calling work. I went thought some results on google but I couldn't find any hint. Probably it's very simple to do with this I cannot get.

How would I do this? First part of the thread title is because I'm not sure if the install of Debian Squeeze would even detect the Start key. (Btw, is there a small enough sticker of the GNOME logo I could buy and put over the Windows logo? )
I read this thread: [URL] but I'm confused about what linmix is saying. Is there a way to get the power key to do the equivalent of what it would in Windows?
I don't find this an essential task, but it would make life a lot easier.
Edit: I mean Super Key not Power.

It seems to slip or pause and I miss moments of action on video files. I have to rewind back to view it again. It only happens for a moment but if it a quick action scene, I can miss what actually happened which becomes annoying. Is there anyway i can correct the stream. It happens with any video player and any type of file. It even occurs in a live stream on a web browser.

I was wondering, is there any way I can put a program on a certain workspace so that whenever I login, the program will start at the spot I want?
Because I tend to have:
Chromium - 1st viewport
Gwibber and empathy - 2nd viewport
Rhythmbox - 3rd viewport
Everything else - 4th viewport
I'm running Pinguy OS, if that changes anything.

So I have a laptop that I built and installed 10.10 on.
The laptop is used by a minor who needs to be off it at a certain time but can't seem to keep track of time.
I have installed that Nanny program called "Parental Control" through the software center but its not quite what I want. It says it locks out the session...but it seems pretty much useless.
So what I'm looking for is software that would not just lock the session and require them to lock the computer but to literally lock the laptop so they won't be able to use it at all until the time lapses or the admin password is entered.

there's a little app called F.Lux that sets your screen temperature based on the time of day. The Linux version is a little spartan with just a console interface but it works perfectly well. The question I have is where can I invoke it so that it starts up after X has started?

I've become quite sentimental recently and bought a floppy drive with an integrated memory card reader and hooked it with my old almost unused floppy to one ribbon. But BIOS sees only one drive and I want to be able to use both. The question is to find a way (if any) of accessing both drives. I've got a proper fdd cable and only the first drive is seen by BIOS. When both plugs are connected only the master floppy is available, but when I'm disconnecting master, the slave becomes available. I've tried to make a node (mknod /dev/fd1 b 2 1), but while mounting it says that it's not a valid block device. Is there any way to bypass this limitation in Linux?

Believing in what Linus said about Gnome3 I have installed XFCE and am now trying to make certain that all is A-OK. I have a program named Gourmet Recipe Manager. It should have a ribbon bar at the top with various commands in it, but after trying to figure out xfce appearance, background, etc. I cannot get the ribbon menu in Gourmet.

I have a hp zd7249cl laptop and have installed ubuntu 10.10 on it. The main problem I am having at the time is the wireless button will not turn on so there for I have no internet access. The switch works fine in windows, but not in ubuntu. The switch didn't work with the live cd either, but I thought it might after install. The wired card that is in the laptop is no good and quit working a couple of years ago so all I have is wireless now.
