Ubuntu :: Driver Activation Via Command Line?

Mar 12, 2010

Does anyone know a way to force a driver activation, or driver install from the command line in recovery mode?Even better, is there a way to force a driver installation from the "(initramfs)" prompt? We're having problems installing the drivers for a PNY GeForce FX 5200 256MB 128-bit DDR PCI Video Card. It goes straight to the "(initramfs)" prompt with the new card installed and, without the card installed it won't allow any drivers to be activated via Administration>Hardware drivers.

Ubuntu :: Install Radeon Driver From Command Line?

May 7, 2010

I got given an old (non brand name) laptop and have installed XP and kubuntu 10.04 on it. The graphics card is Radeon Mobility X1600. Kubuntu gets a very strange problem which does not happen in XP:

Although the installation graphics are OK (sort of, there are some strange font irregularities), when it tries to reboot and fire up the graphics all hell breaks loose, the display is broken in two parts and shifted up with the overflowing region coming up from below. I 'm guessing something in the X server is trying to start and failing because when I try to drop to a text terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F<something or other>) I get pages filling up with error messages.

Unfortunately I can't remember what the messages say and I don't want to try to recreate it in a hurry because after this happens, subsequent reboots start the computer in this split screen mode (weirdly omitting the BIOS POST message) and I 'm not sure how to get it fixed, so far removing the battery, reseting the BIOS to default and letting it cool down seem to work, eventually.

Anyway, I figured since XP seems to be fine, it must be a software problem, although I 'm mystified how it persists and jumps between reboots (the split screen persists even all the way to the BIOS menu). I tried getting the driver from the ATI site code...

Removing temporary directory: fglrx-install.i3fXeb
So, if I can't run the ATI driver, my other option is to run whatever it is that the "Hardware Drivers" KDE menu item runs to get it to sniff out the driver I need. But I can't start an X server so I need to either run whatever it is that runs behind it or get the package I need through apt-get?

Ubuntu :: Configure Nvidia Driver From Command Line?

Nov 24, 2010

My daughter just broke her laptop screen. I can order another LCD - no problem, but until then she wants to use an external monitor. With Windows, this used to be no big deal, because I would hook up a monitor, hit a key combo on the keyboard, and everything would come up on the other monitor.I know how to do this using the GUI, but unfortunately, I can only see about a 2 inch strip at the top of her computer. I can see the gnome menu bar, and when I go into the Nvidia configuration, I can't make out anything below the tops of the two monitors it detects. (I was able to get it to detect both displays, but I can't see to press the "configure" button.)What I need to do, is configure the new monitor from the command line using the two inches of visible monitor that I have at the top of her broken LCD.

Programming :: Copy And Replacing Specific Line From File1 To File2 Line By Line

Mar 22, 2011

I have two files, file1.traj and file2.traj. Both these files contain identical data and the data are arranged in same format in them. The first line of both files is a comment.

At line 7843 of both files there is a cartesian coordinate X, Y and Z ( three digits ). And at line 15685 there is another three digits. The number of lines in between two cartesian coordinates are 7841. And there are few hundreds of thousands of lines in a file.

What I need to do is copy the X Y Z coordinate (three digits) from file1.traj at line 7843 and paste into file2.traj at the same line number as in file1.traj. The next line will be 15685 from file1.traj and replace at line 15685 at file2.traj. And I dont want other lines (data) in file2.traj get altered. This sequence shall be going on until the end of the file. Means copy and substitude the selected lines from file1.traj into file2.traj.

I tried to use paste command but I cant do for specified line alone.

Here i showed the data format in the file. I used the line number for clarity purpose.

Ubuntu Networking :: T1 Line Not Working

Sep 27, 2010

My T1 connection is like this: T1 line -- cisco router -- regular router -- LAN. It works fine. Now I want to replace the regular router with an Ubuntu router, which has two nic card, eth0 to Internet and eth1 to LAN. I tested the Ubuntu router on a DSL connection and it worked perfectly. But when I connected the cable from the cisco router to eth0 in the Ubuntu router, eth0 was not up. It didn't show the ip address of eth0 as I tried "ifconfig". I assigned the static ip from the ISP to eth0, also made it acquire ip automatically. Neither worked. eth0 still got no ip address. Did I miss something?

Ubuntu Networking :: Ad-Hoc Works With GUI But Not Command Line

Jul 17, 2010

I have two Roboards that need to communicate with one another. I have sucessfully installed Ubuntu 9.04 using the 386 kernel based on instructions found online.I can use the GUI to set up an Ad-Hoc network using one Roboard ("Create New Wireless Network"), call it Manet, and connect to "Manet" using the GUI on the other Roboard and ping/ssh between the boards. However, when I try to create the same wireless network using the command line using:

ifconfig wlan2 down
iwconfig wlan2 key off essid 'Manet' channel 5 ap any
ifconfig wlan2 up

I don't see any entry in iwconfig under "Cell". It keeps giving me "Not Associated"When I try to enter the same information on the other Roboard to try to connect to the network, it doesn't connect and under iwconfig, I don't even see any entry for ESSID. Could somebody please tell me why it works when I use the GUI and not the command line.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Connect To A Wireless Line

Sep 24, 2010

I have installed LUbuntu from a desktop cd-rom in my Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600. There is a Pentium III inside.

I have searched in the forum and found that it is a common problem, but the solutions explained either did not work in my computer or I did not understand them. Maybe together we can fix the problem.

I do not know how to connect to mi wi-fi conection. In the menu of the Network conections, I choose the label "wireless", then click to "add", give a name to the conection, write the ESSID, and the password (WPA) and click "Ok" to save. So my conection appears on the list o Wireless connections.

But now, what should I do? Nothing (as a wi-fi icon) appears on the bar (there is just the cabled connection icon, because I am conected with the ethernet cable). If I click on the cabled connection icon there is no wireless option available.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting Wirelessly Via Command Line?

May 11, 2010

For reasons that are not terribly interesting I decided it would be a great idea to remove and re-install the xserver-xorg package. Which proved to be a much larger mistake than I imagined it would be. I purged the package, and then restarted.Naturally I need to have an internet connection to use apt-get to reinstall xserver-xorg, which is where my idea falls apart.I followed the directions in the How To: Manual Network Configuration. However, after I enter the command "sudo dhclient wlan1" I get the line "wmaster0: unknown hardware address type 801" twice prior to the output that the above link shows. Then I just get DHCPDISCOVER messages until I get a "No DHCPOFFERS received. No working leases in persistent database - sleeping."

I'm connecting with WEP to a router that I know works (because I'm using it to type this on my laptop right now) and I know that the wireless adapter(RTL8187) is installed properly because it automatically connected to my network when I had xserver-xorg still installed.I'm running ubuntu 9.04.I've searched for a few hours and I'm no closer to resolving the issue.
