I bought a wireless printer Samsung ML-2525W, now I am trying to add it as a network printer through WI-FI. Is there any way to do it if I use a WEP network, how will printer know the key?
View 3 RepliesI am trying to set uamsung clx2160N as a standalone network printer on my home network. It is a printer with standalone network capability and is connected directly to my router and has a static IP number. We have a few Windows computers at home and they had no problem detecting the printer, installing the drivers and working. Unfortunately my Ubuntu computer recognises the printer and I can even access it's setup and diagnositcs through its IP number. However when I try to add it as a printer, drivers for it cannot be located. #ve tried setting it up three ways:1. Using Samsung's own setup package - finds printer and all the details it needs to work but offers no drivers2. Using Ubuntu's printer setup - recognises printer but stalls at Searching for Drivers dialog3. Trying to *** printer using CUPS - no problem finding and recognising printer, but when I come to search for the driver I get Internal Server Error.
I have of course been trying to do all of these as root. That's the limit of my knowledge reached and searches on the net aren't helping me either. The printer works fine directly connected via USB, so the drivers are on the computer somewhere. How do I get them set up to use the printer on the network?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Inspiron 1545, and have an HP CP1215 laserprinter that I'm using as a network printer by connecting it to the USB port on a Belkin Play N600 router (model F7D8301). The printer works fine from the Macs on the network with Belkin Router Management installed, but I'm unable to get the Ubuntu/Dell to see the printer. When I plug the printer directly into the Dell with the USB cable, I can print, so I know the driver is correctly installed. Is there a way Ubuntu can print through the router? Does the Dell/Ubuntu need Belkin Router Management installed, and, if so, how?
View 6 Replies View RelatedHaving made the transition from a certain widely used operating system to linux, suse 11.2, x64, successfully and pleasantly we are still left with a few problems.One of these is a few applications i have to use which run only in that old OS. ?To that end I have installed VirtualBox and got them to run with one glitch. I cannot print from VBox to my HP LaserJet 4000, lpt1 printer, which works fine in suse. Searching and posting on the Vbox forums turned up that lpt1 is not supported in the current vbox and that I need to set up a virtual network, set up the printer as a network printer and set it up as an lpd/lpr printer in Vbox WinXP. Have tried many different ways to do this without success, I think the problem is I do not know how to set up a network printer in Linux.
The virtual network is vboxnet0, which does show up in ifconfig, along with my eth0 net, and I can ping the windows guest, gateway and the host from either side host:suse/guest:winXP) respectively. Have tried numerous ways of setting up printer in YaST which works in suse but still does not work from WinXP guest. Have read the suse manual and several sources and searched forums with no results.Finally I am thinking I just don't know how to set up a network printer in linux. Using cups, kde, suse 11.2, don't know what else to tell. Samba is installed, although I am not using it to the best of my knowledge.
I intalled Ubuntu 9.10 and i am trying to connect a network printer which is on Win 7, i was able to share files but not the printer.

I have installed samba and added the printer, but it always comes back asking for the authentication. I do not have in my Windows-XP accounts with password, if I use one of my users registered in Windows it does not reconizes it. If I use the user/pass of ubuntu it does not work.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Xubuntu 10.04 on a desktop computer. Everything works fine aside from the fact that I can't access my Dell 3010cn network printer. The printeis accessible and work flawlessly with every other computers running XP, Vista and Ubuntu 9.10I installed the drivers and configured the printer with the exact same parameters as on my 9.10 laptop. The thing is that the printer is always "offline" as if my computer could not connect to it. Also, when I try to acces its options via its fixed IP adress (192.168.1.107) through Firefox, I cannot reach the printer. However, the printer responds to every other computer in the house.What am I doing wrong? Is there a firewall in 10.04 that keeps me from accessing to the printer?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased an hp 3050 printer because of it's wireless functionality. I found this (click me) where someone got it working. I tried to follow it step by step, but I couldn't get the ad-hoc network to work reliably.
I used the network manager to locate the printer's ad hoc network (it correctly identified it as ad-hoc) I then edited this connection, made it a "Link-local only" network in the ipv4 tab and then connected.
Usually what happens is that networkmanager claims that it has connected. I get a signal strength and everything, but I can't actually communicate with the printer. I entered the ip address (into firefox) given to me by asking the printer to print it's network settings, and I don't get a response.
Notice that I said "usually". I've tried this many times, and one time, I actually connected to the printer, got the browser interface, tried to use the interface to connect the printer to my wireless router, and failed (then the browser interface didn't work anymore [which of course would make sense if the printer tried to connect to the router, but I don't even know if I got far enough into the process for that to be the problem]). The printer does not show up as a device on my wireless router (my router has a list of all devices that are logged into it), so it failed somehow. I have never been able to duplicate that "success" again in spite of the fact that I've used the printers control panel to reset network defaults.
It seems that the people who were on the questions forum had no problem connecting the ad-hoc network. I kind of suspect that there is something wrong with the printer's wireless device.
PS: I noticed that hp-setup has an option to plug a wireless printer in via USB, set it up then it should work wirelessly, however, I couldn't get that to work with this printer.
I have a desktop and a laptop connected by ssh (Places>Connect to Server). This works OK for file sharing but the laptop does not recognize the 2 printers attached to the desktop machine. As I understand (??) it, if the 2 printers are set up as 'shared' in CUPS (as they are on the desktop) then they should be recognized by the other machine on the network. But this is not happening. Is this the right way to network printers?

The printer shows up under then Computer->Network->Dell laser printer 1700n, but that is all. Looking under properties just gives me a location of network:///. Cups cannot seem to find it. It would be nice to be able to use the printer. Owners are out of contact for quite a while.

I have had long term access to a networked HP Photosmart printer but now I get the following message:

when trying to access it.The ubuntu desktop is wired to the router as is the printer and another iMac wirelessly can still print to the HP. HPLIP status shows the icon for the printer but with a red x indicating no connection to it.The only recent network change was the removal of another router from our network. (service is DSL via a combo modem/router from service provider which previously was connected to a Dlink router which has now been removed from the chain b/c was redundant to the modem/router)
I bought a new Samsung ML-2851ND. I intend to connect it via the ethernet port is has. Under Ubuntu you cannot just plug and play. To set it up you need to connect it via a USB cable (Ubuntu will have all the needed drivers to operate as soon as you plug it in). Then you can go into the advanced settings for the printer and set up the network settings with the right gateway, subnet and IP address. Once you do this you can http into the address and play with all the other settings. Please note that Samsung have fantastic Linux support and you can download the driver etc here: [URL]
All options are supported (1200dpi, duplex, toner save etc). Kudos to Samsung for making a Linux friendly product. This is the second Samsung I have and I bought it because the first worked so well with Linux. If I need to buy another Samsung are my first preference.
My work has got a new Sharp MX-1800N network printer. The setup requires user authentification, one password for printing b&w, another for printing color. However when they try to set up my netbook running ubuntu desktop 10.04 they don't get it to prompt for a password, which makes the printer reject the printout. How do you fix this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a network printer directly connected via ethernet cable to an Ubuntu netbook, but pinging the printer fails, giving "Host Unreachable". The network light on the ethernet socket is lit green, and there is nothing else cable-connected to the network - just a simple cable connection between the netbook ethernet socket and the Network printer (a HP Laserjet 4200n). Ping works fine if I plug the cable into a different machine (a Win XP box) and ping from there, so it's not a cable or IP address problem.
This sounds simple enough and should work, but I'm stumped. Clues, anyone?
I have a headless machine set up on my LAN which is dual boot, Ubuntu 10.04 SE and Windows. I have a printer attached to it. (HP Deskjet D1500 series) I also have a shared folder located on the machine.
Through SMB I've been able to recreate the share in Ubuntu to point to the share on Windows. When the machine is in either OS, the share can be resolved, browsed, edited, etc, from \hostsharename. Through SMB I've also been able to share a printer attached to the machine (and print to it). I have a problem though:
When the machine is in either OS, it is possible to use the same scheme to access the shared directory. This is not true with the printer. When in Windows: My Windows 7 x64 machine can connect to the printer, look for drivers, and when it doesn't find drivers in \hostprint$, it uses its own. My W7x64 machine can print a test page, and any other pages for that matter. My W7x64 machine lists the printer as "HP Deskjet D1500 series" I do not have to re-add the printer.
When in Ubuntu:I have to re-add the printer to my W7x64 machine. I have to specify the driver to use, regardless of whether I use the same print$ directory. Re-adding the printer gives me a network printer by the name of the printer, not the description (e.g. "HP Deskjet D1500 series")
My goal is to mimic the transparency of the shared directory, so whereas I've created a shared directory in Windows that persists between OSs, I want to create the network printer to persist across OSs. I can print to the printer in either OS, but the "printer" I have when the dual boot machine is in Ubuntu is NOT the "printer" I have when it's in Windows.
I need to accomplish this to avoid booting the machine into Windows for a client to print something. It seems very odd that I can make Apache, PHP, MySQL, shares, and common files persist/be identical between OSs, but not network printers. I've worked this for a few days now, exhausting what I can in information on SMB and CUPS to no avail. I am exhausted myself.
I have an Epson Artisan 835 network printer hooked up to my desktop. I am running a wubi install of 10.10 and cannot get it to find the printer. I previously had an artisan 830 and it worked fine, however, this new printer is not recognized in the add printer application. So far I have install LSB 3.2, and then installed the rpm package for the artisan 835 using alien -i. Now I am at a loss for what to do.

I've never installed a network printer before and have no clue. I'm running Fedora 12, the printer is an ancient HP 2100TN. I'm linked directly to wall jacks in my building, have no clue about the router and have no access to it. I have no idea how to get Fedora to find this printer.

This is ok for the MS windows office PC's, but not for the Linux based systems.The Linux user accounts have a different name than the MS Windows accounts.Because of this, it is not possible to print with that Linux user account. I can create a Linux user account with the same username as the MS Windows account, so that all users can use that account if they want to print something on the network printers. They can use it like:$ ssh <username equal to Windows>@<hostname> "oowriter <path>/<file>"
Now they can print a file from oowriter to the network printer.So my question is, is it possible to use the account name that is equal to the MS windows account name by default?

MS Windows account name = milk
Linux account name = schuurs
Linux account "milk" is created for printing by all users.
user works with account "schuurs" and prints with user "milk" automatically without the use of the ssh string mentioned before.
I would like to create a dedicated Samba print server. I have two printers on my LAN, one printer came with its own NIC and the other is on a Win server box. I would like to setup Samba so that I can just access that server (Samba printer server) and both network printers will show up on there for me to connect to. On that note, can I also load the drivers on my Samba server? Drivers for different Windows flavours and also Mac OSX drivers.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Slackware64 13.0 on a laptop. I've set up the network printer which lives on a Windows Vista machine (not my choice) in the family room. I am able to send print jobs to the printer. That part works fine, but the printer does not print. It simply stacks up print jobs with "error - printing" in the status of the first print job.I think I understand what's happening. I'm sending the print jobs to the print server as "Guest" and I have no guest account activated on the vista machine. I'm sitting here racking my brain (ie googling my goddamn fingers into stumps) trying to figure out how to send the jobs to the print server as indubitableness.
For the goddamn life of me I can't figure out what I need to do to send these print jobs as a specific user. I've tried adding "valid users = indubitableness" to smb.conf and I've tried using the -U flag when running lpadmin to add the printer to my system in the first place.The configuration wizard for windows doesn't appear to have any options to enable guest access or to add a specific remote location and/or user to the allow list.I'm at a loss and I'm losing my goddamn mind.
i have a hp 6500 e709a printer. have configured for network printing and would like to use the scan facility.i have tried to scan from the printer but it does not find the computer. the hp documents mention advanced firewall information on incoming udp ports and tcp ports etci believe it is with my machine as my son has a windows box with the hp software and i have managed to scan from that machine.

I desire to connect a not-yet-purchased printer/scanner combination machine only to the internal LAN via my router (Linksys WRT54G) via Ethernet cable, or via wireless if the printer/scanner has that capability. I want to be able to print to that printer (and scan from its scanner) by only having to turn on the printer/scanner and only one of the other computers, and not have to have both Linux machines turned on in order to print and/or scan.
So my questions are:
When I look at specific models of printers, what should I be looking for in their specifications that indicates that this configuration is possible (i.e., should I be looking exclusively for printers that say they are "wireless printers" or "network printers")?The reason I ask this question: In my online searching, I thought "networked printer" or "stand-alone network printer" meant just that, but what I found instead are pages and pages of instructions on how to connect the printer locally to a Linux machine, with the associated setup to allow that Linux machine to serve print requests coming from other machines on the LAN. And that approach is not what I want to do (with the notable exception of temporary setup to validate that the printer is responding to requests for printing and scanning from Linux).
Are there particular brands, makes, or models that I would have better luck in getting to work in this manner (i.e., "better stick with HP or Xerox")? Am I kidding myself that a combination printer/scanner would work in the same fashion and still be relatively easy to set up on both Linux machines without resorting to some Windows-centric approach? The post inside Setting_Up_a_Network_Printer_using_CUPS that starts with "running an HP Photosmart 8450 as a stand-alone networked printer" (where is the permalink?) is as close as I could get, but I am concerned that the instructions given are specific to the HP Photosmart 8450, or specific to the HP vendor, versus for all printers that can be connected to an Ethernet network (not that being locked into HP is going to be a problem necessarily, but I would like to know why if that is the case). Linux compatible printers says "Have a look at LinuxPrinting for known working drivers for printers data base. Also buy from a linux friendly company, ie HP, Brother, Epsom." Later in that thread, someone said Definitely don't buy canon.
I have a virtual Linux box with a static IP in the cloud.
I have remote sites that have networked PCs that normally act as terminals but also have more than one printer on the Windows Network.
I would like software on the Window's machine to access the known IP address of the server and advertise the printers on the network so they can be printed to with lpr or cups. I don't have a problem manually setting up the printers on Centos if that is necessary. (But I need to know how to do that as well).
I need to know if I can setup a VPN on Windows without it stopping regular internet traffic and how to do it.
I need to know all the steps (what to install, what to issue commands for) to make this happen without using a GUI if possible and if the GUI is easier I need to know which GUI to install.
I also do not have a problem with using a VPN router at the client side if that makes it any easier. Like a Cisco RV120W.
