Jan 17, 2010Having made the transition from a certain widely used operating system to linux, suse 11.2, x64, successfully and pleasantly we are still left with a few problems.One of these is a few applications i have to use which run only in that old OS. ?To that end I have installed VirtualBox and got them to run with one glitch. I cannot print from VBox to my HP LaserJet 4000, lpt1 printer, which works fine in suse. Searching and posting on the Vbox forums turned up that lpt1 is not supported in the current vbox and that I need to set up a virtual network, set up the printer as a network printer and set it up as an lpd/lpr printer in Vbox WinXP. Have tried many different ways to do this without success, I think the problem is I do not know how to set up a network printer in Linux.
The virtual network is vboxnet0, which does show up in ifconfig, along with my eth0 net, and I can ping the windows guest, gateway and the host from either side host:suse/guest:winXP) respectively. Have tried numerous ways of setting up printer in YaST which works in suse but still does not work from WinXP guest. Have read the suse manual and several sources and searched forums with no results.Finally I am thinking I just don't know how to set up a network printer in linux. Using cups, kde, suse 11.2, don't know what else to tell. Samba is installed, although I am not using it to the best of my knowledge.
Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Locate Printer Drivers In Network Printer Setup?
Oct 19, 2010I am trying to set uamsung clx2160N as a standalone network printer on my home network. It is a printer with standalone network capability and is connected directly to my router and has a static IP number. We have a few Windows computers at home and they had no problem detecting the printer, installing the drivers and working. Unfortunately my Ubuntu computer recognises the printer and I can even access it's setup and diagnositcs through its IP number. However when I try to add it as a printer, drivers for it cannot be located. #ve tried setting it up three ways:1. Using Samsung's own setup package - finds printer and all the details it needs to work but offers no drivers2. Using Ubuntu's printer setup - recognises printer but stalls at Searching for Drivers dialog3. Trying to *** printer using CUPS - no problem finding and recognising printer, but when I come to search for the driver I get Internal Server Error.
I have of course been trying to do all of these as root. That's the limit of my knowledge reached and searches on the net aren't helping me either. The printer works fine directly connected via USB, so the drivers are on the computer somewhere. How do I get them set up to use the printer on the network?

Feb 22, 2011i have 3 comps(running suse 11.3) and a laptop(running vista sp2). i have installed samba on all suse comps. i have a printer attached to one of the comps and it has been shared also the internet connection on that comp has been shared. all the computers are connected using lan cables through an ethernet switch. i also have a wireless router which is connected to the ethernet switch.
I am able to view all the comps on the network except the laptop running vista. all the desktops are visible on the network and are able to print and share files on the network and also connect to the internet. the laptop running vista can connect to the internet but its not visible on the network and nor can it share files across the network or access the printer.

The printer works fine from the Macs on the network with Belkin Router Management installed, but I'm unable to get the Ubuntu/Dell to see the printer. When I plug the printer directly into the Dell with the USB cable, I can print, so I know the driver is correctly installed. Is there a way Ubuntu can print through the router? Does the Dell/Ubuntu need Belkin Router Management installed, and, if so, how?

Jan 23, 2011I recently installed Xubuntu 10.04 on a desktop computer. Everything works fine aside from the fact that I can't access my Dell 3010cn network printer. The thing is that the printer is always "offline" as if my computer could not connect to it. Mar 28, 2011I recently purchased an hp 3050 printer because of it's wireless functionality. I found this (click me) where someone got it working. I tried to follow it step by step, but I couldn't get the ad-hoc network to work reliably.
I used the network manager to locate the printer's ad hoc network (it correctly identified it as ad-hoc) I then edited this connection, made it a "Link-local only" network in the ipv4 tab and then connected.
Usually what happens is that networkmanager claims that it has connected. I get a signal strength and everything, but I can't actually communicate with the printer. I entered the ip address (into firefox) given to me by asking the printer to print it's network settings, and I don't get a response.
Notice that I said "usually". I've tried this many times, and one time, I actually connected to the printer, got the browser interface, tried to use the interface to connect the printer to my wireless router, and failed (then the browser interface didn't work anymore [which of course would make sense if the printer tried to connect to the router, but I don't even know if I got far enough into the process for that to be the problem]). The printer does not show up as a device on my wireless router (my router has a list of all devices that are logged into it), so it failed somehow. I have never been able to duplicate that "success" again in spite of the fact that I've used the printers control panel to reset network defaults.
It seems that the people who were on the questions forum had no problem connecting the ad-hoc network. I kind of suspect that there is something wrong with the printer's wireless device.
PS: I noticed that hp-setup has an option to plug a wireless printer in via USB, set it up then it should work wirelessly, however, I couldn't get that to work with this printer.
Ubuntu Networking :: Network Printer Not Recognized?
Jul 7, 2011I have a desktop and a laptop connected by ssh (Places>Connect to Server). This works OK for file sharing but the laptop does not recognize the 2 printers attached to the desktop machine. As I understand (??) it, if the 2 printers are set up as 'shared' in CUPS (as they are on the desktop) then they should be recognized by the other machine on the network. But this is not happening. Is this the right way to network printers?

This is ok for the MS windows office PC's, but not for the Linux based systems.The Linux user accounts have a different name than the MS Windows accounts.Because of this, it is not possible to print with that Linux user account. I can create a Linux user account with the same username as the MS Windows account, so that all users can use that account if they want to print something on the network printers. They can use it like:$ ssh <username equal to Windows>@<hostname> "oowriter <path>/<file>"
Now they can print a file from oowriter to the network printer.So my question is, is it possible to use the account name that is equal to the MS windows account name by default?
example
MS Windows account name = milk
Linux account name = schuurs
Linux account "milk" is created for printing by all users.
user works with account "schuurs" and prints with user "milk" automatically without the use of the ssh string mentioned before.

Jun 7, 2010I would like to create a dedicated Samba print server. I have two printers on my LAN, one printer came with its own NIC and the other is on a Win server box. I would like to setup Samba so that I can just access that server (Samba printer server) and both network printers will show up on there for me to connect to. On that note, can I also load the drivers on my Samba server? Drivers for different Windows flavours and also Mac OSX drivers.

Sep 8, 2009I'm using Slackware64 13.0 on a laptop. I've set up the network printer which lives on a Windows Vista machine (not my choice) in the family room. I am able to send print jobs to the printer. That part works fine, but the printer does not print. It simply stacks up print jobs with "error - printing" in the status of the first print job.I think I understand what's happening. I'm sending the print jobs to the print server as "Guest" and I have no guest account activated on the vista machine. I'm sitting here racking my brain (ie googling my goddamn fingers into stumps) trying to figure out how to send the jobs to the print server as indubitableness.
For the goddamn life of me I can't figure out what I need to do to send these print jobs as a specific user. I've tried adding "valid users = indubitableness" to smb.conf and I've tried using the -U flag when running lpadmin to add the printer to my system in the first place.The configuration wizard for windows doesn't appear to have any options to enable guest access or to add a specific remote location and/or user to the allow list.I'm at a loss and I'm losing my goddamn mind.

Apr 11, 2010I have two Linux machines both running Debian (I do not want Windows to be involved at all). One is a desktop and one is a laptop. I desire to connect a not-yet-purchased printer/scanner combination machine only to the internal LAN via my router (Linksys WRT54G) via Ethernet cable, or via wireless if the printer/scanner has that capability. I want to be able to print to that printer (and scan from its scanner) by only having to turn on the printer/scanner and only one of the other computers, and not have to have both Linux machines turned on in order to print and/or scan.
So my questions are:
When I look at specific models of printers, what should I be looking for in their specifications that indicates that this configuration is possible (i.e., should I be looking exclusively for printers that say they are "wireless printers" or "network printers")?The reason I ask this question: In my online searching, I thought "networked printer" or "stand-alone network printer" meant just that, but what I found instead are pages and pages of instructions on how to connect the printer locally to a Linux machine, with the associated setup to allow that Linux machine to serve print requests coming from other machines on the LAN. And that approach is not what I want to do (with the notable exception of temporary setup to validate that the printer is responding to requests for printing and scanning from Linux).
Are there particular brands, makes, or models that I would have better luck in getting to work in this manner (i.e., "better stick with HP or Xerox")? Am I kidding myself that a combination printer/scanner would work in the same fashion and still be relatively easy to set up on both Linux machines without resorting to some Windows-centric approach? The post inside Setting_Up_a_Network_Printer_using_CUPS that starts with "running an HP Photosmart 8450 as a stand-alone networked printer" (where is the permalink?) is as close as I could get, but I am concerned that the instructions given are specific to the HP Photosmart 8450, or specific to the HP vendor, versus for all printers that can be connected to an Ethernet network (not that being locked into HP is going to be a problem necessarily, but I would like to know why if that is the case). Linux compatible printers says "Have a look at LinuxPrinting for known working drivers for printers data base. Also buy from a linux friendly company, ie HP, Brother, Epsom." To restore internet access requires rebooting the router and turning off the printer (or disabling its networking) similar issues with wired network printing.
