Ubuntu Networking :: Wireshark Won't Work / Resolve This?

Aug 29, 2010

I remember that in the past, I succeed to sniff network traffic with Wireshark but when I tried lately, it didn't work.
- Enabled monitor and promisc mode using the command line and launched Wireshark with option 'promisc mode' on: didn't work.
- Directly launched Wireshark with option 'promisc mode' on: didn't work.
- Did the both previous things with option 'promisc mode' off: didn't work.

I'm using AR5007EG with ath5k.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireshark Can't Save The Captures

Feb 8, 2010

I've run into a sort of catch 22.I installed wireshark via apt-get on my Eee 1008HA, but when it is launched, it does not allow any capture interfaces. I think this is because the shortcut created in my applications paneldoes not start it as root.So I went into terminal, typed in "sudo wireshark" and it popped up, as root. I was then able to capture on my wireless interface. However, if I try and specify my home folder as the location for the capture to be saved, I get an error that permission was denied, which seems odd since the process is running as root and should be able to do pretty much whatever it wants. How can I get wireshark set up so I can both capture _and_ save the .pcap files I generate? I'm running karmic koala, the full output of uname -a is: Linux ruckus-laptop 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:04:26 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux.

Networking :: Started Using Wireshark - Protocols Not Secure

Aug 20, 2011

I am new to using wireshark and I've been browsing around the packets it a bit. I figured I'd try and use it to cut into a protocol that isn't documented, that I can find, but doesn't seem particularly secure. I tried cutting into a protocol and I turned _everything_ off, but wireshark was still picking up packets left right and centre. So I decided to stop the internet daemon and still, packets were being sent over the internet. So I decided to pick some of the IPs and do a reverse look-up. Each and every one of the IPs are of Russian origin or close.

I'm under the impression that these are unwanted packets. I've also noticed that they are sending data from the same port: 32165. Another thing I noticed while doing reverse look-ups is a lot of these IPs are hit in 'Spam & Open Relay Blocking System' and 'Project Honey Pot' which seem to be spam blockers and trackers. What I should do or what I should investigate? The reverse look-ups are only providing me with the ISP which 'owns' the IP block the IP is apart of. They are from various ISPs every time.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Laptop Webcam To Work / Resolve This?

Jul 28, 2010

I've been trying to get my built-in webcam to work for the past few hours and am completely stuck... Apparently I need a driver called uvcvideo, but I cant find it anywhere (its repos have been removed). I have installed Cheese and Camorama, neither of which work. Camorama throws this error when launched - "Could not connect to video device /dev/video0). Please check connection. Cheese launches, turns camera light on, shows a black screen for ~1 sec then closes.

The only way I can get the webcam to work is with a program called "guvcview" (light turns on and I can see preview), that's why I'm thinking I need the uvcvideo driver.

I've found various posts on how to install the uvcvideo driver, but I get an error on all its reposotory links - "reposotory not found". I also can't figure out how to install the EasyCam program, yet another repository error.

Does anyone know how to get built-in webcams working? I suspect it is due to my lack of driver, but I could be wrong. Lsusb detects the webcam as a Chicony Electronics Co. LTD Gateway USB 2.0 Webcam, so the kernel detects it, just no apps.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Scanner Won't Work / Resolve This?

Feb 23, 2010

I recently have a need to get my HP ScanJet 5590 working. Never used it in suse, only in the old windoze daze. Running opensuse 11.2, kde 4.3.4 quite nicely.

When I dusted the scanner off (USB) and plugged it in and fired it up, then went into Yast, scanner, it correctly recognized the scanner by model, but the driver line has Not configured: in front of the driver info. And, it will not do a test scan, nor do any apps see the scanner. As far as I can see all the dependencies are installed, I just need to configure the scanner. But I can't find any place in Yast to do that, nor do I have a clue what command line would work.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Wifi Doesn't Work / Resolve This?

Jul 17, 2010

I installed openSUSE 11.3 under 2 machines, one of them using a Linksys USB wireless N adapter (rt73usb) and another using an Atheros AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter (ath5k). I have a Belkin f5D8236-4 router, with the SSID "linksys". I also have an Ubuntu 10.04 machine which has working wireless internet. I know almost nothing about networking, but from what I can tell, openSUSE 11.3 seems to have trouble with DHCP, specifically setting the dynamic IP address. To try to go about fixing this, I attempted to set a static IP, but I am quite confused by all the settings.

I have tried both the graphical "Network Manager" (KDE, Gnome, and command line versions) and ifup, both with no luck.

Here is the information from the working Ubuntu machine code...

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Can't Get Nvidia Graphics Driver To Work / Resolve This?

Ubuntu Security :: WireShark - Do Not Run As Root

Nov 7, 2010

The Wireshark website specifically warns against running WireShark as Root....

Quote:

Administrator/root account not required!

Many Wireshark users think that Wireshark requires a root/Administrator account to work with.

That's not a good idea, as using a root account makes any exploit far more dangerous: a successful exploit will have immediate control of the whole system, compromising it completely.

First of all, most Wireshark functions can always be used with a (probably very limited) user account. In particular, the protocol dissectors which have shown most of the security related bugs do not need a root account!

Only capturing (and gathering capture interface information) may require a root account, but even that can usually be "circumvented", see CaptureSetup/CapturePrivileges for details how to do so.

It hogs up all the resource to remove the dump.

Ubuntu Networking :: Could Not Resolve Host Name?

Apr 29, 2010

I'm having an issue where some of my machines hostnames are no longer able to be resolved after setting up a mythbuntu backend to allow netboot. Also it seems that which machines hostnames get resolved is not consistent. (ie sometimes one gets resolved and sometimes it doesn't) I suspect that it has something to do with the changes I made to "/etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf" to get the netboot running.

I have a Verizon DSL modem/router as 192.168.1.1. Up until playing with the "/etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf" I saw hostnames of all of my machines show up in its network map. Now, some of my machines still get network access but their hostnames are no longer resolved. What did I do wrong? Here is my dhcpd.conf file:

Code:
# Default LTSP dhcpd.conf config file.

subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 - Cannot Resolve Names Using DNS

Sep 16, 2010

A while ago I downloaded a VMWare VM for 7.10. I then upgraded it to 8.10 and it was working just fine. I just did the upgrade to 10.04 and I'm having problems with my networking. The really odd thing is that I can ping machines on my local network and out on the Internet by IP address but it will not resolve names using DNS.

I've got the network set up for DHCP. I also tried DHCP address only and manually entered my DNS server addresses but still no luck on resolving names with DNS. At the end of the day, I don't really care if I get this fixed or just get a new VMWare VM. (I can't create one because I only have the player.)
