Ubuntu :: Wireshark Automatically Start With Sudo?
Feb 2, 2011
I am trying to use wireshark on my ubuntu 10.10 laptop. However I have found out that wireshark will only detect my network cards when it is started with root permissions. How would I make it automatically start with root permissions?

I freshly installed Wireshark on my PC by running 'yum install wireshark'. Installation succeeded. But then I cannot find how to start Wireshark. I looked already in different folders by using locate ( and updatedb) but I cannot find the place where I should invoke the program. How I can start my program?

I use Opensuse 11 with fvwm. How can I get conky start automatically when I start fvwm?
I setup the conky under fvwm session for my Opensuse 11 but it won't start automatically. I am wondering how to write some kind of scripts to force it to start automatically and with a delay about 10 seconds after fvwm starts.

Recently i was fixing a permissions error on my home folder. In the process i ran accidentally chmod 777 in the root directory. BIG mistake. Now i cant run sudo, or start network manager. I am currently on vacation and made a bootable version ov ubuntu on my flash drive, but i wouldn't boot. I think it is because i chmod'ed the grub folder (with is in the root) I have a boot CD a home, but is there anyway to fix it beforehand?

I have been using ubuntu or a derivative distro and perhaps I grew too used to sudo. If it matters I am on Slackware 13.37 and xfce4. I was able to adjust sudoers to allow sudo but I am having difficulties running some progs as root. The biggest concern is trying to start thunar as root. It wont run after sudo, su, or su -l. What am I doing wrong?

I just set up apache on my PC and I cant change the permissions by right clicking because "I'm not the owner" and instead of using the chmod command on every file that I would like to edit I would just like to write a script on a text file, save it to my desktop so all I have to do is double click on it and boom I can edit all my files, etc.

I upgraded to 10.04 and my AWN dock won't automatically start even though the 'box' is tic'd and it's showing in the Startup Applications. I did lose all of my configurations as well after upgrading and had to reinstall everything on the dock.
Also, there are little numbers on the launchers like for Trash and Email that tell me how many items are in there. The Trash was easy to remove the numbers by right clicking and choosing the Preferences option. There was a place to disable that but there isn't one for the Email and those little numbers look well.

I'm setting up a Python-based webserver on my Debian box. Setup: The Debian OS is VM based, but I've switched the VirtualBox from NAT to Bridged. IP of the VM setup = 192.168.1.7 (per my router's admin screen or ifconfig). I've succesfully set up my router's port forwarding for both ssh and HTTP. I've successfully set up my router's dynamic dns using [URL].
Regardless of the specific Python webserver I'm using (Django, CherryPy, standard library), I have to start the webserver @ 192.168.1.7:80 using sudo. Otherwise I get an error about not having permission to access the port. None of the webserver tutorials mention needing to use sudo when specifying an ip:port.
Question: why do I need to use sudo to start these webservers? Is it an indication that I shouldn't be using 192.168.1.7? Or that I'm not setting a config file properly somewhere?

I'm using vnc to connect to my ubuntu box from my windows box however I don't like the way it works.1) It doesn't start automatically. I have to be logged into my username before I can connect to my box.2) It takes control of the screen on my ubuntu box which isn't what I really want to happen. I'm used to connecting via rdp in windows where I connect to the other computer and if you looked at the other screen you wouldn't even know I am logged on.This is handy if someone else is using the pc plus I just don't like everything that I am doing to appear on a computer screen that I can't see. I find it kind of freaky.

When I go to 'Places' on my panel, my windows drives are listed. I can click on one, it then asks me for password, then it puts a hard drive icon on my desktop. This is excellent. They are listed as '200 GB Filesystem' etc.My only problem, is how to make these icons stay after I shut down. I don't want to do this every time I boot up.

recently i was trying to mount my partition automatically at start up ...so i gone through some tutorials on the net nd made some changes in /etc/fstab file (i made a back up before making any changes). when i was changing permissions of folder in which i tried to mount my all partitions i got my system screwed up.then it was showing following error at start up and GUI was not turning up. "could not update ICEauthority file " also my sudo was not working so first i restored original fstab file through recovery console then i googled out about above errors. I found some solution now my system is working but showing strange behaviour like:
> ubuntu is not detecting any of my hdd partition
> disk utility is not working (showing no error)
>fdisk -l shows nothing
> no new software is getting installed via ubuntu software center (shows no error when clicking on install but nothing turns up)
>i cannot restart or shutdown my system from GNOME it only logs off my session (although through terminal its working)
>no media player showing sound controls enabled
>gnome not showing ethernet or sound volume icon in upper panel (although net is working)
>users and groups from system->administration menu is not working (error:cannot load configuration)
i think most of the administrative tasks are not working.........i googled out but found nothing satisfactory..i dont want to reinstall it, coz i m not very experienced with linux n it took about a whole month to customize my ubuntu 9.10 on my college internet...

I have a lenovo thinkpad laptop, and it has both touch-pad (standard build in laptop mouse) and touch-point (in the middle of the keyboard) mouse options.
I almost invariably use the touch-point and the accompanied scroller and key-buttons.
HOWEVER, for the scroller to be recognized by ubuntu you must run two scripts as follows:
xinput set-int-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation" 8 1
xinput set-int-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation Button" 8 2
Restarting the computer resets these settings, and you must re-run them each time you start up ubuntu.
I am looking to write a script that will automatically run itself (which will execute the above commands), or to permanently change these settings so that it will not be necessary to run them at each start-up.
Thanks in advance, and if there is another thread on these forums that I should move to (or even just another thread that would be a more likely place to get a response). This seemed like the best forum (one which can certainly hold this post without violating any rules), but I may have missed something.

After upgrading my husband's laptop to 11.04, KDE does not start automatically anymore. kdm (the log-in screen) appears. I select "KDE Plasma Desktop". But instead a kind of terminal appears in the top left corner. This console does not have window decoration. When I type startkde into it, KDE starts completely normally.
The same happens with a newly created user, so a misconfiguration in .kde cannot be the cause.
/usr/share/xsessions/kde-plasma.desktop is correct:
Code:
The metapackage kubuntu-desktop is installed.
I have tried reconfiguring and reinstalling various packages that I or others thought might be responsible:
Code:
GNOME was installed on the same computer, too, and caused some problems after the upgrade (instead of KDE being the default session, it was Unity, but no menus or control bars loaded). After trying all the things mentioned above, I uninstalled all GNOME/Unity-related packages to rule out they were causing the problem (according to that list: [url]). It did not help, even though for two packages messages appeared that sounded like they might make a difference:
Code:
I compared with
Code:
With my other two computers that work fine after the upgrade to 11.04, they also use startkde and kwin.

My son dropped my laptop and broke the screen so I decided to use it as a project.
1 I managed to install kubuntu on it unfortunately it was the 64bit version not the 34bit one. The problem I'm having is that the external monitor only works after kubuntu boots up so I can not view the set-up boot options. What I want to do is put win 7 on it as I have a mate that needs a computer and he is pretty computer illiterate.
2:It will boot into G-parted and I have made a ntfs partition for the win 7 OS to go into. I have another duel boot desktop so followed what I did with that. The problem is that as I cannot see the initial start up screen and can get it to boot from the win7 boot disc that I have(this is a working cd I have used before) Is there a way I can get Kubuntu to automatically go into boot from cd on start up etc?

I have it configured in the application settings to do that, and I've checked the Startup Applications and indeed it is listed there. However when I start up the icon doesn't appear in the tray and my wallpaper won't change every 10 minutes like it's supposed to until I actually go to System > Preferences and run Desktop Drapes manually.

After my update to 9.10 I had not notice that CUPS, Samba, lighttpd (and maybe other serives that I've not missed until now) don't start up during system start no longer. After all, things look quite normal in the directory /etc/rc3.d, which has the appropriate links S20samba, S20lighttpd and S50cups, all of them working when I use them directly. But wait! Ubuntu uses updstart now, does it? I have yet to understand what that means to the classic startup scripts in /etc/init.d.
