Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Network Lot Slower And That Only Hotspot Works

Aug 17, 2010

My school has (once again) chosen to change their wireless network. This means it has gotten a lot slower, and that only our hotspot works. Our hotspot however is secured so that im unable to enter facebook, and a lot of other websites, etc. So what i did in windows was installing a program called hotspot shield, which redirects you ip through a server, so the LAN Admin basically have no control of what you're doing if he haven't got more skill than the one we have. I think what Hotspot shield does is making a vpn connection (correct me if im wrong) and i would certainly like to do that i ubuntu as well.

Ubuntu Networking :: Create Wireless Network Hotspot ?

Jul 22, 2011

I connected a USB Wireless Dongle (Sapido AU-4512S) on my Ubuntu 10.04 64bit. I wanted to share my wired internet connection from my pc to my friend's laptop.

So, I did the following:

1. Installed ndiswrapper-utils, ndiswrapper-common and ndisgtk in Synaptic Package Manager.

2. Installed Windows 7 64bit driver of my USB Dongle through Wireless Network Drivers(ndisgtk)

3. Now it says, net8192su -- Hardware present: Yes

4. Created a Ad-hoc connection clicking on Network Manager > create new wireless network..

5. Edited the Name, set Security to WEP 128-bit Passphrase and entered my desired password.

6. Finally clicked Create but it says "Wireless Connection disconnected"

I'm thinking about maybe the problem is with my dongle so I checked by using the command:

Code:

which gives me information about wlan0

The next thing I did worsen the situation. I unplugged the USB dongle ang plugged it again. This time,

Code:

gives me no result anymore.

Code:

Also, the option that says "create new wireless connection" disappeared in my Network Manager Applet now.

Now I have no problem. To restore the "Create new wireless connection" in my Network Manager Applet and finally create a wifi hotspot using my wired connection from pc.

Code:

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Connect To Unsecured Wireless Hotspot

Sep 30, 2010

I am attempting to connect to an unsecured wireless network; I helped set it up for my local club with a local ISP. Once things were up and running I took my wife's laptop running Ubuntu 8.04.3 and Wicd. Can see the unsecured network no problem, good signal, hit connect, whirs away for awhile, then: 'Unable to obtain IP address.' Strange. I am about to give up and report back to the ISP when I think I might try one of the old Windows boxes in the computer room. Spots the network, hit connect, online, no problem.

So Windows connects fine, Ubuntu box can't get an IP though no doubt the router is trying to serve it one.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Use The Netbook Wireless Hotspot

May 6, 2011

setting up a netbook's wireless access point (to allow remote connection to a network drive connected to the netbook). I know this sounds daft but there is a reason.I just switched workplace and have all my projects on one drive. However my new workplace's network only assigns ip to certain Mac addresses. So I can't just plug in the network drive. My new work desktop is MS loaded, warranty sticker sealed and shared so I can't change this.Well I will, but not in the first week.

The simplest solution I thought of was to bring in my ubuntu netbook connect this to the network drive and wirelessly connect the netbook to the new desktop this via a wireless USB dongle.I connected the netbook to the network drive with no problem using the wired card. I done this by adding

Code:

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.4.1
network 192.168.4.0

[code]....

For the wireless bit, on the netbook, I right clicked on the network indicator icon and selected "Create New Wireless network" then entered a network name and WEP passphase.Over to the desktop (XP). I plugged in a wireless dongle, get it load the driver then selected my new network and entered the passphrase. It came up connected and sure enough I check and it got assigned a sensible IP.

All seemed well and I even connected my android phone with no issues. The phone and desktop can ping each other. However for some reason I can't actually ping or ssh to or from the netbook. So whilst it's happily providing the wireless network it can't use it itself.

p.s. Incidentally I am allowed to plug in USB drives so this isn't an access issue or me trying to sneakily circumvent rules. I even told my IT department about the wireless dongle plan.

Fedora Networking :: Wireless Much Slower In FC12/13 Than In Windows

Jun 11, 2010

"Dell 1525 WLAN PCIe card with11n mini-Card & external antenna" wireless card. It got recognized fine by FC12, but it was rather slow. I had read that life would be better in FC13 with the new kernel. After a long wait, I upgraded to FC13 yesterday.

It seems that the wireless is indeed faster. However, it it clearly a lot slower than under Windows 7 (it is a dual boot PC). My test is simply to play say Hulu in full screen: under Windows it looks fine, under FC13 it plays in slow motion.

Fedora Networking :: Wireless Slower To Connect After 15 Upgrade?

May 31, 2011

I've been using fedora on my Lenovo R61i since I got it...I believe the first version I used on this laptop was f10. I always try to keep it on the latest distro and I also enjoy a clean install every year or so. One thing I was always impressed with was how quickly I could go from sleep to back up and online. So I decided it was time for a clean install this weekend to fedora 15. Now when I wake it up (open the lid), it takes over a minute for the wifi to connect again. This hasn't been the case for the last 4 distro's so I'm wondering what I can do to speed that process back up, is there a particular package I can downgrade or is this something on their radar already and I should just wait for an upgrade?

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Network Works Fine On XP / Ubuntu / 11.1 But Not For 11.2

Mar 30, 2010

On my Acer netbook (AOA-150-1635) the wireless works fine with WinXP, Ubuntu, and used to work with Suse 11.1. I replaced the Suse 11.1 with a clean network install of Suse 11.2. I couldn't get the wireless to work and did another network install using the wireless. When the install was completed I could not get the wireless to work with Suse 11.2. When I run the "collectNWData.sh" it shows--

!!! CND0120E: Network card wlan0 has no IP address
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

[code].....

I looked up error CD0120E and changed the network devices setup to "traditional". The wireless "scan" picked up the routers and I added the encryption keys. Still no joy. I ran "collectNWData.sh" again and it said it is better to use the Network Manager.

!!! CND0180I: The system can't ping external IP address 195.135.220.3
!!! CND0150E: There might be a problem with the default gateway definition 10.1.1.1 on interface eth0

[code]....

Going back to Yast, Network Devices, I set Network Manager. The result is that it is back to the beginning with "collectNWData.sh" giving the original error.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Can't Connect To WEP Network, WPA Works Fine?

Sep 2, 2011

I am unable to connect to a WEP-protected network. the Network manager log shows either a DHCP timeout, or a failure to associate. (attached below).Changing to WPA is not an option, as the network is not controlled by me. This is with the rt61pci driver for a Ralink 2500 series chipset.(Rosewill RNX-G300EX card)Manually forcing an IP does not result in a connection either. This is with the latest OpenSuSE 11.4, all patches applied. Router is a D-Link DIR-613, and I know the passphrase I'm using is correct because it connects both on my Android (what else?) phone, and my lappy when I boot XP.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 - Broadcom Wireless Never Works

Apr 30, 2010

I've got a Dell Inspiron mini 10 that has the Broadcom 4322 wireless chipset in it. I have NEVER got this thing to work satisfactorily despite the numerous tutorials online about getting this damned card to work. I thought everything would finally be fixed with 10.04 but no luck at all. I've tried the b43 diver (which isn't supposed to support the 4322) with no luck.

I also tried the restricted STA driver, which seems like it will work as it identifies networks and even connects to them! However, the speed is excruciatingly slow and connections drop like flies. This netbook is actually a friends that I convinced to let me put Ubuntu on and have them try it out, but they are most surely not going to be impressed if the wireless never works.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Only Works On Certain Networks

Oct 11, 2010

I have a pretty beat-up laptop, on which the inbuilt wireless doesn't work, and so I now have an ASUS WL-167g, which is acting up!It almost always connects to the required networks without an issue, but then once I'm connected it's REALLY slow on some of them! For example, while I'm at school, it works flawlessly! And at a couple of friends' houses, it works too! however, at home, and at a couple of other places, despite the fact that it connects, its so slow, that google takes like 5 mins to load and searching for anything on google leads it to time out!! This happens whether I'm right next to the router (full signal strength) or 2 floors up (at like 3 bars strength)!

It's getting pretty frustrating to have to swap my lan cable between my desktop and laptop constantly, and also to not be able to use my laptop away from my desk!Does anyone know what might be going on??Also, while i have you guys here! I have another problem -- with the inbuilt card.. Initially, it wouldn't work at all.. but more recently, it has started to function (it connects and works on my home network fine) the only problem is that about 10 mins after I turn the wireless switch on on my laptop, it hangs! (EVERYTIME) (if it's relevant, my laptop is a SONY VAIO VGN-S46GP). Again, any input would be appreciated!!

It works perfectly when wired. But it does not when I try it wireless. It did work wirelessly with Windows 7, and I have many more both stationary and laptops working through the router, so I do not think the router is the problem.I am guessing that there are no drivers for the wireless to function, but I am not sure. I am guessing that there are no drivers for the Ethernet card ?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Works - Wired Doesn't ?

Jan 31, 2010

I recently got a cable modem from Comcast, and connected a Belkin F5D7230-4 wireless router to it, then connected my computer and an Xbox 360 to the router with ethernet cables.

My computer dual-boots Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. In either operating system, the wireless connection is flawless. In Windows, so is the wired connection. But in Ubuntu, there's a lot of trouble with the wired connection -- specifically, while I can connect to the router and to the Internet, and while I can use ping, dig, traceroute, etc., to verify connections to remote hosts, Web browsing, or anything else that uses http, works only for a few Websites, and then only erratically.

I don't believe it is a DNS problem -- testing with ping, dig, etc., demonstrates that, and I have also tried using alternate nameservers. I also don't believe that it is an issue with IPv6, as I've tried the fixes usually suggested, including editing the grub configuration to disable IPv6 support in the kernel and verifying that IPv6 was inactive. I've also tried using local dns servers such as pdns-recursor. None of these things seemed to help.

Also, perhaps unrelated, but disturbing: my computer has locked up a few times while testing the wired connection, and I had to use a hard reset to restart the computer.
