Ubuntu Networking :: Sony Vaio S Wireless Card Not Recognized On 10.04
Jul 17, 2011
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my new Sony Vaio series S but it does not recognize my wireless card (I think). The button is on, but the light does not turn on, and it does not detect the wireless card. The wireless card, an Intel Centrino Advanced -n 6205, does work in ubuntu and when I run the command: lshw -C network, it appears UNCLAIMED, that I think it means the drivers are not in the Ubuntu libraries. What can I do to make it work? I've been struggling but I cannot make it work.

I upgraded the wireless card in my laptop (sony VAIO CW) due to the original Atheros being incurably slow. The new card is an Intel 6300 ultimate n. In Windows 7, after installing the relevant drivers everything worked without a hitch. In my Ubuntu 10.04 installation, however, I have been unable to get it working.Initially I had the compat-wireless modules installed (linux-backports-modules-wireless-generic), as I had done so to try and get the Atheros card working better. I tried removing all of these, and that made the difference that iwconfig now (instead of nothing) listed
Code:
wlan1 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:off/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=16 dBm

I'm currently installing Slackware 13.1 on my old Sony VAIO. It's got a wireless card sticking out the side of it, and I just want to make sure I set it all up correctly. I got to the screen where it's asking:
static IP
DHCP
loopback
And I'm not sure which one to pick.

Wireless which was working perfectly in Ubuntu 10 is now disabled in 11.04. Dual boot to Vista verified the hardware is ok.
Reading related posts I applied the following:
sudo lshw -C network
Quote:
06:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)
rfkill list all
Quote:
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
sudo lshw -C network
[Code].....
But nothing at the IP level. Also, after a few minutes in which my laptop went to screensaver and locked up the wireless was disabled again.

I've been searching all around information, how can I enable wifi, bluetooth and lan on this laptop. However, nothing works for me... rfkill unblock all command doesn't work.
how to do it in short time that would be just great, because I offered to my friend to repair her computer and install 'better' working Linux, but so far I even cannot enable wireless.

Just bought one of these - [URL]. Installed 9.10 64bit, install went smoothly, but now having a few problems with graphics card drivers and sound. The system has a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 Graphics so I guess it's too new for a driver?

I used to have an Ubuntu-Windows partition, but (what do you know?) Windows Crashed, and wouldn't boot anymore. So I reinstalled Windows, deleting my Ubuntu partition. Instead of reinstalling Ubuntu afterwards, I decided to give Debian a try. So here I am. I can't find drivers for my wireless network however, and it's quite annoying to have to plug in the Wired Connection with which I am writing this.
My main specs are:
Sony Vaio VGN-CS390J
Debian 5.04
AMd64

I have a Vaio M13 M1E, and I'm trying the Linux Mint 10 (Julia) DVD, via a bootable USB stick created Universal USB Installer, but the wireless isn't working. On the other hand, trying Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook it works fine - given that Mint is a variant of Ubuntu, I'd have expected it to work the same.I've tried searching, but not found anything relevant, so anyone have suggestions on what to try?

I have a sony laptop VGN FS315M, i recently installed Ubuntu 11.04, and i really love the unity interface.
But i have a few issues as well:
1. Vaio FS315M has Nvidia graphics card, ubuntu suggested a video card driver which i installed but didn't work well so i switched to the another one and it worked generally well but that too has problems like if my computer goes to sleep upon closure of lid, it cannot wake up again. it shows only a white screen and only way to get out of it is to restart the computer by manually pressing start button.
2. Sound card works generally ok but mic doesn't work on startup but when i click sound preferences and mic selection from analog microphone to another one and then again to analog microphone, it works but not the first time. Sound output is low compared to windows.
3. Arabic/persian fonts generally are not shown well in firefox?
4. Computer seems to be slow in unity compared to 10.10, may be because of high demand on graphics or the graphics card is not optimized?
5. Skype won't start automatically and there's no option in this skype to do so and also it doesn't save password?
6 . Ubuntu doesn't connect to net connection unless i connect manually, i want it to connect automatically to internet
7. This issue is not related directly to ubuntu. My system is a dual boot system with windows xp as well. Before windows xp, i tried windows 7 beta and then later removed it but it left its bootloader at startup. since my CDROM drive is also out of order so i tweaked BIOS by installing PLOP to install ubuntu. Now i have 3 startup menus if i want to run windows xp, one for ubuntu, then windows 7 with option for earlier version, when i select earlier version then windows xp or PLOP installer. so its a mess. I want PLOP to appear at the beginning (so that i can have boot option from USB available), then ubuntu and if i select windows it should go directly to xp not thru others.

I'm having trouble with 802.11n as of late in Ubuntu. I know my wife's computer used to connect faster but it seems to not be able to go over 54 Mbit in 10.10 any more either. Laptop is a stock Sony Vaio VPCZ12CGX/x which has an Intel Advanced-N 6200 card.
LSPCI output: 02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6200 (rev 35)
I can connect to the 2.4Ghz channel or the 5Ghz channel on my wap both are capable of up to 300Mps as per its configuration but neither go over 54Mbit. Both do about 160Mbit from this same location in Windows. Moving closer makes no difference.

I just installed and Ubuntu doesn't recognize my wireless card HP dv2945se. I can get a wired connection. I can't figure out what kind of card I have (did the terminal command line, have no idea how to read it) or how to install a driver for this OS (HP's site just lists drivers for Windows). How to get the wireless card recognized?

I'm trying to proselytize and have installed Lucid on my receptionist's Gateway M500 with an Orinoco PCI Mini wireless card.
The card works in XP, but when I boot into Linux, the network card indicator light doesn't turn on, and lspci gives me this:
No wireless card
Pressing the on-off wireless button does nothing.
What can I do to turn on the modem so that Lucid sees it?

I have lucid installed on my hp laptop without any problems, and I went to install it on another hp but the I can't connect to any wireless network. I tried to follow this thread's advice [URL] . Because it's pretty much the same problem except I think the wireless card is from a different Intel family but it didn't work.
Basically wireless networks won't show up, in fact the network icon only has "wired" as a menu option.
I tried to follow the thread, even though I had no idea what it was saying as far as instruction goes.

I just installed 10.04 on my EeePC 1000HE, and wireless isn't working. My card isn't listed when I ifconfig. I've messed around with installing the Windows drivers, but nothing has worked so far.
If it's useful, I popped off my battery and it said something about the wireless controller "NE766".

I'm working with 10.10 (Maverick) on an older Compaq laptop. Wireless card is a Cisco Aironet 350. This card is listed as supported and drivers included in the server distro.
During the Network configuration portion of the install, I selected eth1 (wireless); the card came active and a valid network connection was established.
However, after the full server installation the interface (eth1) is not seen.
What's confusing is that modprobe -l shows the drivers as present:
kernel/drivers/net/wireless/airo.ko
kernel/drivers/net/wireless/airo_cs.ko
Insertion and removal of the card is noted in /var/log/messages:
pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket1 pccard: card ejected from slot 1
pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket1 pccard: card inserted into slot 1
(I'd be happy to supply more info, but currently set up with Fluxbox and I'll be darned if I can get copy from the xterm to paste into Firefox...)

I've been trying to install Ubuntu 64bit on Sony Vaio CW and the Screen is 14 inch when I boot from CD it seems to work normal but after i select "Try Ubuntu without installing" or "Install Ubuntu" then the screen goes black like nothing happening but the CD runs for while then stop. Again I reboot to try again this time I press F6 then select "nomodeset" and it boots fine I was happy though, after installation success when I boot again WTF it goes black again and then I reboot and press "E" during the options that showing to select OS then I remove "Quit Splash".
I guess then I add "nomodeset" and control+X to boot, it works fine. So when I log in and of course I activate the Nvidia Graphic Driver then I reboot and WTF again the screen was out sync or something like the the screen didn't show properly. The Application menu normally is on the upper left of the screen but this time it was on the center of screen and the Shut down button came to the left side and i have to move the mouse cursor to the right and then it would appear on the left just like the resolution is to big for the screen.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ340E. I installed Ubuntu about 6 months ago and had a problem-free time with it. I then got busy with other stuff (house work, etc.) and hadn't worked on Ubuntu for about a month. Now I switch on my Vaio with Ubuntu and I find the screen is just too bright.Since 10.04 was just coming up, I thought this would be fixed when I update. I updated, but the screen is still too bright.
I searched the forum for answers and found only some pretty old threads which were about the Fn key combos (which, obviously, doesn't work), spicctrl, etc.So I followed the instructions here. I did just what Step 1: Checking for Module says, but Terminal just doesn't give any output.

I just got a new Sony laptop running the I7 Q740m Quadcore with 4m ram w/ WIN 7 Home. I want to run Ubuntu in a Virtual machine. I am wondering if Virtual box is a good choice, or what other VM I should use? Also which version of Ubuntu, 10.10 64bit or 32bit? Would an older OS be more stable?

I am having problems with the brightness control on my sony vaio laptop, at virst when i upgraded the driver for the VGA card the whole screen went blank, I had to port a bin file from windows and write my own EDID file to get it to work (nVidia GT 230M), but I am having problems with the brightness, although ubuntu does read the input from the keys (FN+...), the brightness refuses to change, adding the brightness applet to the taskbar does not work either. I really need to be able to change my brightness because the battery usage is off the charts.

Cant install it or event boot it to try, because when i choose to install or test it the scene goes blank. I had the same problem when I had the older version but solved it whit using the custom eidi or whats is called and changing xorg.conf. But I saw that nvidia had posted the drivers for GeForce gt 330m on its site for 32 and 64 bit Linux drivers so i wanted to try the newest ubuntu. The thing is that i cant event install it or anything, so i cant use the eidi method either.

When I try to install Ubuntu or (having installed using Wubi) boot Ubuntu, I get a blank screen and no activity. This problem has been addressed many times but I haven't been able to get any of the proposed solutions (e.g. nomodeset, i8042.nopnp) to work. Is there another Linux or Unix-like OS that is known to work with this hardware?
