I am running Ubuntu 11.04 and i am curious to if there is a way to share my established wireless connection through my Ethernet port.. I know it was possible in Windows by going to adapters and bridging the wireless, and Ethernet adapters. how to make this work in Ubuntu?
View 1 RepliesI tried to setup sharing to connect Ethernet and wireless. I want Ethernet connected to desktop A, and wireless connected to another laptop(B), with my laptop acting as an AP. I set the network settings in Firestarter: Internet for wireless, local network for Ethernet. I want to share Internet from laptop B over the network. Internet won't work from my laptop since it seems to use the wrong interface.(Since the desktop is sharing Internet, although not on Internet usually when connected via Ethernet. And of course DNS/Gateway IPs aren't set for wlan0 since it's acting as an AP.) SMB wouldn't work for desktop A and laptop B: laptop B could detect desktop, but reports error "Path not found".

Without realized the problem,I had reset the router.This morning I've been informed by the ISP that the connection has been re-established.So,I accessed the Internet via the 4 port router but failed to do so (server not found).Suspecting that the problem was from the 4 port router,I reverted to my old Adsl router (DSL-520B single port) and without any problem I managed to access the Internet back.I really need help to configure back the 4 port ethernet router to its initial state.

Maybe this isn't original thinking, but then again maybe you didn't think of doing it this way (which i am sure there are many ways to do it) So I have 2 Ubuntu Servers, 1 Windows Box and a Hub - All 3 with internet access off of single ip and single Ethernet port.
While searching for a backup method today I came across Clonezilla. I was wondering if this was the right thing for me and since I needed to backup my roommates PC for a reformat and install of Windows I decided I would give it a try, but only if it would work. I didn't want the hassle of going into the main part of the house and finding out what cord was what as there is a cable modem connected into a switch (4 static IP's with internet) and one port of the switch hooked to a router) Anyways, didn't work he was on the router I was on the switch)
But this got me thinking. When I setup my server to do this, during one of the setup scripts it said it was setting up Internet access for client machines and that it was assigning them IP addresses threw a DHCP server that it had installed.
So, I dug up the hub connected the internet cable to hub up link and Server 1 on port 1 Server 2 on port 2 and Windows on port 3 The main server gets the internet provided IP address and routes it to the hub via a virtual interface. Server 2 is configured for DHCP and the windows box, It was set to get info automatically but it didn't fill the DNS info so I had to manually do that (just a heads up) I decided to use OpenDNS Servers (208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220) but im sure putting in the gateway IP address would have worked too.
So, by now if you need this I am sure you are excited and want to get to it. Like i said there are probably other ways of doing it, ways that don't involve you installing clonezilla and DRBL, maybe even just DRBL is needed, maybe one of them installed whats needed as a dependency- all I know is it works, if you know - elaborate so people know, but hey- this way not only do you have internet access on all PC's you can deploy custom images to them as well.
i have an embbeded hardware that uses bootp for booting from a Network Managemnt Host (NMH)on the same ethernet. The embedded hardware has both kind of ports i.e ethernet as well as E1/T1. I would like ask, what do i require to establish a communication-link between the embedded hardware and the NMH throuh E1/T1 ports of embedded hardware, so as to make it boot through from E1/T1. Further, NMH possesses only ethernet port. Just to refine my questions i'd like to know what additions do i need to do on my NMH , like may be i have to put an E1/T1 port or is it possible that the E1/T1 port can be directly connected to an ethernet port on the other host.

I am using Yellow Dog Linux however I am willing to change to any other distro as long as it is compatable with PS3 (as this is what im using linux on)
I'm trying to set up a wireless AP with Internet sharing. I currently have the AP setup with hostapd and a dhcp server. The clients can connect but there is not Internet sharing. Now my situation is somewhat uniqe in that my internet connection is my teathered android cell phone. The tether app is azilink and i use openvpn to create a virtual networking interface(tun0).

I was using my Ethernet port to connect to the internet until about two weeks ago - suddenly the system no longer recognised that port even existed and just kicked me offline. I am able to get online now with a wireless card (replaced the broadcom card, that was a whole different can of worms...).
why my system is unable to connect with the Ethernet port? If I plug in the cable nothing happens.
Using ubuntu 10.10 (pinguy OS) i connected an ethernet cable from my girl's macbook pro to her lenovo ideapad s10-3t to transfer some DS9 episodes onto it. new enough to linux to have not been able to figure out how to access the files on the mac, so i disconnected the ethernet, and the wireless hasn't worked since. tried everything i know, and googling for a while (as well as searching again on this forum) to no avail.
Just before linking the 2 computers via ethernet, the wireless worked fine on the ideapad, always had; but not so after the ethernet connection that did nothing other than apparently kill the wireless. an "lshw -C network" command tells me i have a BCM4313 wireless card, and *-network UNCLAIMED. also, if i launch "install additional drivers", i see that the proprietary driver is not active.
How could merely plugging in an ethernet cable that happened to be conncected to a MBP running OSX.6 do that? and will that happen again? i thought linux was supposed to play real nice with other OS's, so why did a simple file transfer kill my wireless connectivity? i have no access to internet via ethernet cable, so i cannot just download the driver i need now. shouldn't it still be in the computer still? somewhere? is there a simple solution to this, or has the wireless driver been wiped out by plugging in the ethernet? is this a bug that should be reported?
I can't figure this out for the life of me. I am new to Linux too. Wireless works fine. I plug my Ethernet in and turn off wireless and I cant surf the web, download, etc...Network Manager finds the wired network under eth0 and it works perfect on my non-linux desktop (nervous to even mention Vista around here). Firewall was set up with basic setup (I didn't make any changes). I have a Sony vaio VPCCW21FX with fedora 13. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I've spent the last 2 hours trying different techniques but nothing is working.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 so the last thing I tried was going into the network manager, clicking on wired, editing the ethernet port and allowing it to share. This did nothing.
I tried to share the connect with firestarter but that did not work either.
I am using ubuntu 9 but unable to connect to internet via my usb Siemens c110 modem. I have a dual boot system of both windows7 and ubuntu9. I am using the same modem in windows7 and have installed virtualbox where i have installed the same ubuntu9 but there it automatically detects the wired connection(usb)[eth0] but in the actual boot it doesnt detect anything. I have typed in the terminal sudo ppconfig but it was unable to find anything.

I'm trying to find out if the port scanner nmap can detect two different services which are sharing a single port. For instance, if I'd managed to set up, I dunno, a web server and an ftp server to both run over the same port, would nmap with version detection be able to detect both of them, or just one?

I've only got one ethernet line running into my room, and I've got loads of computers. The server has 2 ethernet ports, one integrated into the motherboard, one on a PCI card that I took from my old server. The on board ethernet never worked on my old server- but I only tried it out post-install, it was hooked up to the card during install (For the record, networking on linux has *never* worked for me if I installed then plugged in the networking stuff after the fact). So I just used the card instead. Transferred the hard drive into a new machine, and lo and behold, it would only work after I transferred in the card from the old one. What I wanted to set up is a basic NAT system, where the network connection is routed through from my server to my main desktop- but when I run ifconfig, my card is not detected, just lo and eth0. How can I fix this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid and VMware 2.0 server. I have a an XP virtual machine that is needed for work. When I am at home and I place my cat 5 cable to my cisco catalyst switch, my XP VM recognizes the ethernet card on my laptop and bridges fine with ubuntu and works fine and I can get to my network. When I take my laptop to work and I go to a site and I plug it into a World Wide Packet 311 management port on the switch, my XP Virtual Machine does not see the network no matter what setting I set it too(100 full, 10 full, 10 half and etc). It simply says that the network card is disconnect. Ubuntu see the network fine and I can ping and talk to the network without any issues but the VM does not.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a simple server running Ubuntu Server. Usually the server connects to the network by Wifi, so there is usually no cable connected to the Ethernet port. I noticed that there is a dhclient3 running on eth0 anyway. It is causing undesirable disk activity. Obviously, it is never going to get a response as long as no cable is connected. I can kill the responsible process manually, but I wonder first what is starting the process and how I can prevent it from being started. If there is a way to get the server to boot without starting this process, I wonder whether this is the right solution. Connecting to the network by Ethernet is the failsafe when Wifi doesn't work. I guess what I would like to see would be a way for the server to detect when eth0 does not have a cable connected and not start dhclient in that case, but to activate dhclient when a cable is connected.

What I would like to do is bridge these ports, so I can plug in another Ethernet cable and run it to an unmanaged switch in my room (handy for my work laptop when on-call and building other PCs, etc).
I.e. Router --> 8-Port Switch --> My PC.
Eth 0 --> 192.168.1.100 static
Eth 1 --> 5-Port Switch --> DHCP
I believe this is the config to make the ports bridged:

I have a Dell WLAN 1397 Half Minicard, 802.11 b/g card in my laptop, and I can't seem to get ubuntu to work with it. I tried this method:
1. Synaptic Pack Manager
2. Check "Install from Boot Disc"
3. Reload
4. Install and apply bcmwl-kernel-source
5. Reboot
This didn't work for me, so I tried entering sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source and that also didn't work. Another thing I tried is formatting my Ubuntu partition and reinstalling, and retrying both of those methods. The ethernet port does work, however.
I want to transfer the audio file on linux machine using Ethernet port, is it possible?

View 3 Replies View Relatedwhile my brother was browsing the web on my windows partition he had a blue screen pop up, one of the soft/hardware error ones, not a true BSOD, anyways, ever since my lan port on the computer seems to not be activiating as no wired connection is recognized. The lan port/card is directly attached to the Mother Board, it's a gigabyte motherboard in a self-build computer. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to troubleshoot this and see if it is truly a hardware problem or if its something else.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a server with two ethernet ports. I configured eth0 to be static, set at 10.1.10.148. I plugged in another router into the other ethernet port in order to configure that router. I configured eth1 to use dhcp. Using /etc/network/interfaces rather than gnome network manager. When I did this, I lost internet connectivity (internet routes through eth0 of course)
- Why did I lose internet connectivity?
In order to recover internet activity, I had to disconnect the new router on eth1 of course, and do sudo ifdown eth1. That wasn't enough however. After rebooting numerous times and pulling out my hair, I finally tried configuring eth0 as dhcp, rather than static, and this fixed the problem.
- Why didn't sudo ifdown eth1 solve the problem? What information was saved between reboots that somehow remembered that I plugged in the new router? Because my thinking was if /etc/network/interfaces was identical, and the network topology was identical, after a reboot everything should be restored, but it wasn't.

I have a laptop running Windows XP with a secure wireless internet connection. I want to share this connection to my desktop running Ubuntu 9.10 via an direct ethernet cable connection. So far in Windows I checked the "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" in the Wireless Network Connection Properties menu. I have an Ethernet hub, and want two computers (both notebooks) to share my internet connection. One is running Ubuntu 9.10 and the other is running Windows Vista. I want both computers to be able to connect to the internet (I use a cable modem).
However, when I plug both computers in, I am able to get only one of them working at one time. When Ubuntu works with the internet, Windows does not work (although it sees the internet connection). When Windows works, Ubuntu sees the connection, but cannot connect.
I'm trying to share an internet connection between two computers. The one currently online is a HP Presario running Ubuntu 9.10, and connects through a wireless connection. It has an ethernet port, which I'm hoping to use to connect to a Dell Desktop running Windows XP pro SP 3. I'm hoping to make this happen one of two ways.
1. Without having to mess with any DHCP settings. Sadly, I live with my parents, and the router in their room uses DHCP and sets the addresses for all the computers on the network. My parents don't want me screwing with any of the settings on the router. is there a way to just have Ubuntu pass information from the ethernet connection to the wireless connection without having to deal with DHCP.
2. I'm sure this has been explained, but as I'm new to Ubuntu, I will pretty much need step by step instructions to do this part. Sorry to be difficult. Is there a way to have Ubuntu keep the current settings it has on the wireless side (let the router determine it's address and all of that good stuff), but have a DHCP server kick in on the hard-wired side so Internet Connection Sharing has an address to look for on the laptop?
