Ubuntu Networking :: Share Fileserver Over Internet

Jan 26, 2010

I have a computer on my LAN that I'm using as a file server for my photography work. What I'm wanting to do is allow my business partner be able to access the file server from his home over the internet. I'd also like to create a share folder on each of our computers so that we can each access and modify so we can sync our work easily without being in the same office. What would be the easiest way to do this and how exactly do you access another person's computer over the internet?

Ubuntu Servers :: Secure Fileserver Over Internet - Opening Samba Ports Make Default Particularly Vulnerable To Penetration?

May 26, 2011

I'd like to set up a fileserver for myself and a few trusted individuals. I'm computer savvy and I use various linux servers frequently for work, but this is my first time trying to setup my own. Is it possible to have a Samba server setup so it is both secure and facing the Internet? Two questions:

Will opening Samba ports make my default Ubuntu server particularly vulnerable to penetration? More than having an SSH server running? Does Samba/ can Samba be configured to encrypt traffic or is it sent plainly? If so, does Windows and Mac support this secure communication?

If not, what would you suggest? I'd like to achieve something like a network drive and at a difficulty level that my parents could use this if they really wanted to. I will be storing things like financial information and tax returns, but no weapons-grade secrets.

Ubuntu Networking :: Could Use LAN And Share Internet Connection Between PCs?

Jul 10, 2010

I'm trying to connect two PCs to the Internet (or at least to create a local network) using a crossover cable. My main PC (the one that has two ethernet adapters and is connected to the Internet) runs Windows 7 and my secondary PC runs Ubuntu 10.04.Unfortunately, it doesn't work. Both systems send out packages but don't receive anything. How can I possibly fix this, so that I could use LAN and share the Internet connection between PCs? Does Windows need special software to recognize Ubuntu (or the other way around)?

Ubuntu Networking :: Share Internet Between Two Interfaces?

Oct 17, 2010

For a very special project, many hardware issues, unusual limitations, etc, I'm turning my ubuntu into an access point (temporarily) by sharing the Internet from one device to another. I found out that with the devices I'm using, this can't be done with the network manager.

I need to get the internet from a device called 'tun0', to my 'wlan0', so it can broadcast it as a very special access point. I've read that there are ways to do this with the terminal.

Ubuntu Networking :: Error Trying To Share Internet Connection

Feb 19, 2011

In the documentation at [URL] it says

Quote:

Note: To clarify the above example here is an example configuration that will work - * 1. You are already connected to the internet using your wireless on port wlan0 * 2. The ethernet port eth0 is connected to the PC that needs to share your internet connection (or you could wire eth0 to a router for multiple machines)

I am trying to do precisely this, with my laptop aready connected to the internet via my HTC Hero on port usb0, and the router needing to share the connection plugged into the laptop's port eth0. Port eth0 is set to "Shared" as the doc describes.

The router in question is an old WiFlyer pocket AP, which has a fixed and unchangeable IP address on its wired port of 192.168.7.77. What happens is that when I plug it into the laptop's eth0, NetworkManager pops up the "eth0 Connected" message...and then "Disconnected"...and then "Connected"...and then "Disconnected"...etc.

I want to be able to share my cellphone's Internet connection through the laptop and out into the WiFlyer so that others can get a wireless connection in a location that has no other form of connectivity.

[Rooting the Hero and making it an AP won't work: it can't run Froyo and it can't broadcast wireless.]

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Share For Android Phone?

I thought this will be as simple as in Windows 7 (connectify+virtual router). But it's not. So far I've managed to install a driver for an usb wifi dongle and now Ubuntu sees it

Code:
$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 unassociated Nickname:"<WIFI@REALTEK>"

[Code].....

Could it be that the wifi interface is down or something?

PS. when I left click on network manger, I see that under wireless networks it's written "disconnected".

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Bandwidth Does Not Share Effectively?

May 16, 2011

I have an Ubuntu box, and there are two another PCs with Windows XP at my home. There is a TP-Link WR340GD wireless broadband router, and a Motorola SB5101E cable modem. Maximum download speed of the Internet connection is about 6 Mbit/sec.While I'm starting some download processes on the Ubuntu box, the other two PCs get only small bandwidth according to their users, although download speed on my computer does not often exceed its maximum.

More precisely: I usually download files at approx. 1 Mbit. The other users complain about that I slow down the Internet connection at their computers, and tell me to stop using the Internet. Is it possible to improve the usage of internet bandwidth, and share the connection fairly between computers

Ubuntu Networking :: Looking To Share Internet Connection Through Ethernet

Aug 5, 2011

After some fiddling around, I have come to the conclusion my current wifi access point hates my other computer's Broadcom chip or the drivers thereof. So, my current idea is as follows. I would like to use my netbook to connect to the wireless network, and then connect my other computer to it through ethernet. My netbook is dual boot XP and Ubuntu (think Ubuntu is a version behind) and I would be fine to set up this sharing in either and just leave it on as a repeater station. My other computer is dual boot XP and Fedora and I would prefer this work to allow me to have network in both. I have a straight-through cable and have verified that my network card supports the automatic crossing over behavior.

Networking :: FreeNAS Standalone NAS Box Fileserver?

Apr 13, 2011

I would like to make a small NFS server for a small LAN. Normally, I would build a dedicated cheap and cheerful linux box to do this. However, I was wondering if all of this could be done more easily using a commodity standalone device like e.g. "NetGear ReadyNAS Duo NAS". I presume devices like this run their own proprietary OSes, and I would prefer instead an opensource OS based device. I do like the look of these devices as they seem simple and small.

So my real question: What would linuxers advise for me given that I want a minimalistic NFS fileserver? I can make my own dedicated linux desktop machine. However, is a standalone device similar to the above, but running something like FreeNAS, also an option?

Ubuntu Networking :: Still Can't Share An Internet Connection With Windows XP Client?

Feb 1, 2010

I have been trying off and on for weeks to share my Internet connection with a Windows XP client (netbook). While I can ping back and forth between the two machines, in the form of a ping test, I can't get to the Internet from the client, no matter what I try.

My Ubuntu 9.10 desktop (host) has two NICs, eth0 and eth1. eth0 connects to the Internet. eth1 goes to the Windows XP client. Regardless of whether I use an Ethernet crossover cable or a standard cable, I can get the two machines to talk to each other, but no further.

Things I already tried:

-Tried setting eth1 to "shared" mode in NetworkManager on the host. I set the Win XP machine to automatically acquire an address & DNS. Didn't work.

-Manually configured the IP settings on both machines, like this:
client:
address 10.0.0.2
subnetmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 10.0.0.1

[Code]....

Despite all of the above, I still cannot share the host's Internet connection with the client. I don't understand where the client's traffic is going, and why I can't share the connection. As far as I know, I am not doing any sort of firewalling or blocking on the host, so there is no obvious reason that the client's traffic simply disappears. I just know that whenever I open a Web browser on the client, all I ever get is error messages.

I have had no issues setting up a shared connection when the host runs Windows XP, so I am pretty sure there is no broken hardware causing the problem. Why can't I share the connection under Ubuntu?

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Connect To Windows Internet Connection Share (ICS)

My friend is trying to share his clearwire connection with me using Windows ICS. Using network-manager or wicd, I am unable to connect to his share. I am able to connect unencrypted with iwconfig, to the ad-hoc network, and then use dhclient to gain ip address.

I am not able to connect to WPA encrypted share using network-manager or wicd. nm-applet crashes when trying to connect. I am attempting to setup wpa_supplicant, but haven't got it working yet.As usual, the wireless networking out of the box experience in Ubuntu doesn't work. This is extremely frustrating. If Ubunut's goals are to be the default desktop, then these guys need to get wifi that "Just Works"...

Ubuntu Networking :: Two Ethernet Ports And Share Internet Via A Switch

Apr 30, 2011

Just recently got a new rig, and was wondering, is there a way to share internet via a switch. I understand the problems with switches is that they dont assign IPs like routers do, but if my ubuntu machine worked like a router by assigning IPs, could it work? Current setup is as such. I have one ubuntu machine with 1 ethernet port (this shall be the main preferably) 1 mac with a single ethernet port 1 modem with a single ethernet port that cannot assign more than one IP address. And a 5 port switch. Would it be possible to place the modem into the switch, get the ubuntu machine to receive the IP address, and broadcast all other address' to everyone else via the same switch and ethernet cable?
