Ubuntu Networking :: Share USB Drive In Server?
Dec 21, 2010
I have a server with a shared internal drive (not the same one that the system is on) and a 500GB external hard drive that is connected via USB and used for backing up and archiving. Right now I have a somewhat lean GNOME setup so that I can use Webmin to share the external. Having a GUI running on the machine is pointless and a waste of memory, however, since it's headless. I just want a command line server that I can maintenance from my Windows 7 laptop with puTTY. how I would go about sharing the USB drive over my LAN without a GUI/Webmin?

I am using Cen OS 5. I have configured Samba server on it. I create a accounts suppose tom and 2nd is jarry in my samba server and map it in my windows xp computer as P drive (Private Drive) where the users can access their home directories. When tom tom enter into own account he can access his own home folder and same position with jarry. I want to create a common share drive using samba where all samba users can keep their data with their respective folders normally s drive i.e share drive. They can create file and folders and even all users can access the files of each others. Like tom can access jarry files and jarry can access tom files or folders to share their office work with each others.I want to know is it possible in samba to create a common share drive where all users share their files each others.

I have just built 2 Ubuntu Desktop machines with a 2TB drive in each.
The machines are to sit on a Windows network one as media storage the other to as backup for the first.
I have shared a folder on each machine and all the shares can be accessed from the other Ubuntu machine and from the windows machines.
I have installed another 2TB hard drive in each machine and formatted as ext4 file system.
I then created a folder on each machines new hard drive and shared as usual. The shared folders can be seen on the network but cannot be accessed by network machines.
The error is "Unable to Mount location" "Failed to mount Windows Share"

I managed to install samba and it's GUI. I tried to share a directory within the pictures folder (at home/mark/pictures/share) just as a test. I had everything set up right, but it was inaccessible from a windows XP machine on my network. After some digging I found the problem lay with the permissions of it's parent folder. I right clicked on the parent folder then clicked properties, then clicked on the permissions tab. I changed the permissions for others and it's working fine.
I'm having the same problem now but with a share on a NTFS drive called storage. I cannot change the permissions for the shared folder or any of it's parents by right clicking. Any changes I make revert immediately back to their previous setting. Is there any way to change the permissions to allow read access to everyone?

Activate: share this folder Allow others to create and delete files in this folder Guest access (for people without a user acount)click on Modify share button in other computer I go to Places>Network doble clic in the computer with share folder, double click in the share folder, and I can access to the files
If the share folder is in the internal hard drive all runs good, but if I share a folder in a external drive, when i go to places>network doble clic in the computer icon, i see the share folder BUT when I made doble clic on to open it 'Unable to mount location Failed to mount windows share'

share an external USB NTFS drive on my home network. The drive is attached to my desktop box running Debian Lenny. It's accessible on the desktop. I have a directory on the drive that I would like to make accessible to a Windows XP laptop. Read-only would be fine. The laptop has wireless access to the network.

I have two computers with ubuntu 10.04 installed. They both connect to the same wireless router. One computer has an external hard drive that has music, pictures and some documents. another thing, the hard drive has been formatted to ext4. I would like to be able to access that external hard drive from my other computer. I read some post on how to connect to the server through ssh but i think it's the intruction are too old. I tried nfs for server/client, but couldn't set it up, it was a little complicated.

so after searching and reading, and searching some more, im stuck. i cant seem to get a mounted thumb drive to give write access. first thing to know is that, im using a seagate dockstar with a primary thumb drive[sda1] booting debian and samba.
i guess you could say im still in the testing phase, just trying to make sure files can be shared, mounted and accessed by users. the problem is stated as the title. i have successfully shared a folder in sda1 with rw access, but i cant do the same for the second drive[sdb1].
for sda1 with rw access, here are the smb.conf settings:
Code:
[shared]
path = share
available = yes
valid users = mark
[Code]....

I am trying to share a hard drive on the network. (Essentially the hard drive is for another computer which didn't have the physical space for it so this computer is like a holding place for the hd). I read somewhere that I can use samba to do this. But in all honesty I have no idea what I am doing. What would be the best way to share this drive? Also understand, I know little about networking.

I am having the following problems with samba.
1. I cant share a folder on an external USB drive. (I have no problem doing so in UBUNTU)
2. I cannot seem to get Samba Swat to work.
I've Tried 127.0.0.1:901
my ip address:901
severname:901
I made sure that xinet was installed and started as well as smb and nmb. I can access other shares on the server just cant get samba swat to work nor can I set up a share on an External USB. I can access it from my side but not my Wifes side. I even made the root of the drive a share like so:
in smb.conf
[FreeAgent Drive]
comment=Shared Server Drive
path= /media/FreeAgent Drive
read only = no
browseable = yes
create mask = 0777
directory mask = 0777
valid users = argedion, perky
what am i missing or doing wrong? I have a simular set up on a server running UBUNTU 10.10 and it is sharing paths from a USB external. (note: I did not have to share the root of the drive in ubuntu.)
I know that Fedora is not UBUNTU nor GOD willing will it ever be. forgot to mention that firewall is off and i cannot access it even as root

The file permissions on the folder are RW for user,group and world.(umask=0000) My main problem is with SELinux, I've tried to audit2allow and that seemed to work, all I had to do then was chcon the directory and files to type samba_share_t but the tool fails with Operation Not Supported. Am I to assume you simply cannot share files from a mounted ntfs drive under SELinux? Because I've just spent 2 hours trying and I've just about ready to just give up and just go back to windows when I need to share those folders. There's no way i can copy the folder contents to my Linux partition, far too big for that. Has anyone EVER been able to do this? Do I have to disable SELinux to do it?

So I have the strange task of trying to make something like I said above work in Lubuntu 10.04. But every time I do, the share is not accessible because none of the important permissions (other) can be set because its, well, NTFS in linux. And I know of no way to fix it.Is there an easy way, preferably with Nautilus since the person I am setting this up for isn't a computer expert, to setup this share so thats its accessible and writable by other computers on the network?

so i found an older computer i want to play with as a file server. ubuntu server edition, installed gnome GUI (to make things easier for now, i plan on removing it later) and used [URL].. to configure my 1.5tb harddrive so my windows machines can access it. i had everything working but than a fatal crash made me start from scratch (os and all) now i am unable to access the samba share from a machine running windows 7, but i can access it from a machine running windows XP using the same login and password i set up for windows 7.this makes me believe it's a problem with windows 7 and not samba.

I am trying to get write access to a share on xp machine via automatically mounting
the share via the following /etc/fstab entry .... after doing a sudo mount -a ... I can view the files on the 'C-share' but can not write them back to the server
//WINBLOWS/C-share /media/C-share cifs,rw
This used to work and allow share files to be read and writable before some ubuntu updates.
I am currently running ubuntu 9.10.
PS: if I connect via places->network ... the files are readable and writable ... but I need this setup to be automatic with a mount for someone else.
What needs to be added to the above fstab entry

This server is for dhcp and sharing purposes.I can actually access one nfs share via other ubuntu and osx clients on the network, then I configured another share with different mount point (different drive, different forlder, different contents).The problem is: when I connect form a client to the new one it displays the same exact content of the first share. It seems that is mounting the same share on a different mount point on the client and exporting the shares via the exportfs -ra command doesn't solve nothing.This is my fstab file
Code:
proc /proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0
# / was on /dev/sda1 during installation

Weird. I connect Windows to Ubuntu Server but not Ubuntu to server. I am able to connect my two windows (7 and vista) to Samba/UbuntuServer and browse, cut, paste, etc. However, I can't for the life of me connect with my Ubuntu machines. I get to the stage: "Opening Workgroup" and then I get unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server.

How do I now actually connect to a windows shared folder?

I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. On the windows pc I am trying to share with I get, "Windows cannot acces \Josh-Desktop
ame of folder"
My smb.conf file looks like this:
That folders I cannot access are Music and Videos.

Trying to share files between Ubuntu 10.04 machines has become a continuing nightmare; it has been going on ever since the launch of 10.04.
I have worked my way through every post and howto I can find in this forum, but without success.
I have 3 machines in my home network; 2 are on wired connections and one on wireless. Each machine dual boots Ubuntu 10.04 and Win XP.
When all machines are in XP, everything is fine. When all machines are in Ubuntu, the reverse is the case. On some I can see the other machines; on others I can only see "Windows network". In all cases, clicking on any of the icons that emerge from Places>Network, I get the "failed to mount....failed to retrieve share list from server."
Along the way, I have changed /etc/samba/smb.conf so often that I have now done a clean reinstall of Ubuntu on each machine and a clean installation of Samba. The problem remains.
I have a few specific questions, the answers to which might just lead me in new directions
1. In the smb.conf file, should the "Netbios name" entry be the name of the machine itself or the name of the Ubuntu machine that you wish to be the server.?
2. Should there be a different entry for WINS support yes/no for server and clients?
3. Many of the howtos take you to /etc/init.d/samba to start and stop samba; but that folder is not present on any of my installations. Is that OK? Do those instructions only apply to earlier versions?
4 I am totally at a loss over the WINS server entry, and what w,x,y,z are meant to be replaced with
