Ubuntu :: Dual Booting Windows Share Files On The Hard Drive?

Jul 23, 2011

I am buying a new laptop and am curious about dual booting it. I currently run Ubuntu full time, but will need windows for a few applications. (there are no cross over applications to do this)

When you put both windows and ubuntu on a computer do you share the hard drive? Meaning would I be able to access all my music in windows and then restart my computer-run ubuntu, would I have access to all the files?

Fedora Networking :: How To Share Hard Drive On Network

Jun 18, 2010

I am trying to share a hard drive on the network. (Essentially the hard drive is for another computer which didn't have the physical space for it so this computer is like a holding place for the hd). I read somewhere that I can use samba to do this. But in all honesty I have no idea what I am doing. What would be the best way to share this drive? Also understand, I know little about networking.

I tried nfs for server/client, but couldn't set it up, it was a little complicated.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To Networked Windows Hard Drive

Jun 14, 2010

My friend has a Windows 7 desktop with a large data hard drive which is set up to allow other users to connect to remotely, such that they have read and write access. To set up a connection from another Windows machine, it is as simple as right clicking in the My Computer window and selecting "New Network Connection", then entering the information requested.

The information my friend as given me is:
- The IP Address
- The Hard Drive's Name
- A Username and Password

Ubuntu :: Share NTFS External Hard Drive?

Apr 18, 2011

I've been searching for a way to do this with no luck. I've got a 1TB external hard drive I used to share over the network from my Windows desktop -- which is now a Ubuntu desktop.I've tried setting it up as a samba share, and the closest I've gotten is mount error(12): Cannot allocate memory. I've tried the suggestions (editing /etc/security/limits.conf), and that removed the warning I got from testparms but didn't fix the mounting on my mythtv box.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 In A Second Partition Of The Hard Drive - Windows XP And Windows 7

Oct 24, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows XP running each one in a partition of two different hard drives. I want to install Windows 7 in a second partition of the hard drive where Ubuntu is running. Windows 7 did not see the hard drive where Ubuntu is running. So I understand that I need to format the partition where Ubuntu is running, install Windows 7 and later on Ubuntu 10.04 which will create the boot for the three systems. But I want to backup Ubuntu's installation, and after installing Windows 7, install the backup. So I will need to add the file for the dual booting. How can I do it? Is it there any piece of software that could create the three booting option that I need?

Ubuntu :: How To Image A Windows Hard Drive

Apr 30, 2010

I have an unused laptop computer with an WindowsXP installation lying around. I decided to use this computer with Ubuntu for the next few months but it is absolutely crucial to preserve the current WindowsXP state somehow. Is there a safe way to "conserve" that very Windows installation as an image so I can recopy it later on? I'd like to clean out the computer completely to install Ubuntu afterwards. After using Ubuntu I want to install the old WindowsXP again as it was before. Is that even possible? Power on and XP boots as before? I mean driver, accounts, passwords etc? What would you recommend?

Ubuntu :: Windows Hard Drive Won't Mount / What To Do?

Sep 3, 2010

Windows XP Laptop hard drive is stuck in a hibernated mode. Will not let me access it through Windows, period.

I loaded Ubuntu Live on the suggestion of a coworker in order to retrieve my important files by hooking up the Windows HD through a USB adapter (Inland).

Ubuntu recognizes the 160GB HD, but refuses to mount the drive because "Windows is Hibernated." I Know my disk is hibernated, I need a way to get my important files from the drive...

(Screen Shot Attached in .jpeg format)

I know very little abount Ubuntu so please keep that in mind with your gracious replies.

Ubuntu :: Non-ntfs Hard-drive - Install Windows?

Apr 18, 2011

Some time ago I reformatted my hard drive to just run Ubuntu. Now I need to install Windows XP but when I put in the install disk it says it can't find a hard drive. I'm guessing this is because the hard drive is formatted to a Linux-specific ext4/extended/linux-swap set-up. The ext4 partition is 71GB and only uses 13GB. I have 57GB free. I can see all this in Gparted but how do I now split that ext4 up and free some space for ntfs partition for Windows? Indeed is this what I should be doing? Obviously I can't unmount the ext4 bit whilst in Ubuntu.

Ultimately I want to do a complete reformat of the hard disk and just install Windows XP for the time being (I'm handing the laptop in for a hardware service).

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Share/Mount Hard Drives Over A Local Area Network

Mar 19, 2011

I have a computer, the one I am on now, with Ubuntu 10.10, it should be completely updated... and I can network with other computers, I can access Windows XP and 7 shared locations on other computers, and I can also get Ubuntu on other computers to access this computer's shared files. What I can't do, however, is share my hardrives that are on this computer, I have tried sharing them in /media/ and etc, but it is not working, apparently you have to mount them in some mystical way.

Another problem is getting Windows machines to access Ubuntu computers on the network - which I believe is a Windows problem, so I can figure that out some other time, but importantly, I want to be able to share my hardrives over the network.

If someone can give me some instructions to mounting and sharing hardrives(internal), and even my DVD-Drives, and portable USB devices, would also be fantastic - since, in Windows you can just right click, "share", and it's done.. It is a very useful thing to have, and I don't want to use Windows on this computer anymore, but I have no choice, really, if I can't share my storage to the other computers.

Hardware :: Windows 7 Killed Hard Drive?

Mar 6, 2010

EDIT : Solved? (Sorry if this is the location for this thread or if someone else already made a thread about this but I tried Googling this ever since it happened with no relevant results IMO so yea. Also sorry if this post sounds trollish / ect. but the fact that I lost the original version of this post due to the website logging me out kinda changed my attitude ATM... Besides, this one is shorter :/)

About a week ago (2/28/10) I went to install Windows 7 (CURSE YOU MICROSOFT!!!) and my damn comp froze during the formating process. So I then went ahead and shut down my comp like an idiot and tried rebooting with the install disk for it to only show the Windows 7 startup animation screen When booting without the disk all I get is some sort of Grub installation with no bootlist Afterwards I went ahead and booted my Fedora 12 LXDE Live-CD and ran Gparted, which tells me that there are 156 hard drives (or Partitions?) on my comp, labeled /dev/sda, /dev/sda100, /dev/sda101 - /dev/sda255 most with just unpartitioned space and every third hard drive / partition containing an EXT4 partition consisting of around 148.32GB of space...

All the file browsers I've tried using (LXDE's pcmanfm, GNOME's Nautilus, and Windows XP's Explorer (yea, makes no sense why if 99.999% of the partitions were Linux partitions...)) do not even seem to acknowledge it's existence, let alone allow access to whatever partitions might have survived the event.

So my Question[s] is this : Can my files be restored? If so then How? If not then how am I supposed to format my Hard drive and get the damn thing working correctly? (since Gparted thinks my single hard drive = 156 hard drives >_>)

Anyhow, theres no rush as I've been running off of Live-CD for the past week or so but in any case it would be nice if I could get my files back or at least have a working hard drive to use if all is lost Trying to get uncertainty out of the equation - Should I pull teh plug?
