Fedora Networking :: Samba And Network Manager In 9 - Setting Up A Wired Connection?
Feb 3, 2009I have 2 workstations that I'm trying to network together so that I can backup each to the other. One is XP sp2 and the other Fedora 9. Since installing Samba on the Fedora box and trying to get it configured, I have a problem that Add/remove programs won't do installs because it says there's no connection to a network. Network Manager says there aren't any connections, but it worked before the Samba install. Mozilla and Thunderbird can access the internet OK. Both workstations are connected by cable to my router and thus to my ISP (DNS server).
Two questions:- where can I find hints on setting up a wired connection (which card's MAC address does it want? router or wrkstn?) and Am I right that Add/remove is stuffed because of Network Manager?I now have Samba working from Linux to XP, but still can't get into Linux from XP. I tried the Linux PC's MAC address and set up a wired connection in Network Manager. NM still thinks there isn't one...

Jul 24, 2011I am trying to set a fix ip address with network manager since my router is not able to set it in order to make port forwarding for aMule.I managed to set the IP address and also de primary/secondary DNS on network manager.My question is: should I set the same DNS on bot the router and network manager?More detail: my router has its own DNS's other than those of OpenDNS. At the moment, I left those DNS's on the router and set up the OpenDNS ones on network manager.Is it correct or should I set the same DNS's on both the router and network manager? In this case, would it be a waste of time since there will be a sort of "double requesting" to the same DNS? OpenSUSE Wireless :: Network Manager Stuck On 'setting Network Address' Then Continuously Prompts For Hex Or ASCII Key
May 28, 2011When I attempt to connect to a wireless network, the network manager asks me for the network's password, then says 'setting network address' for 20 or so seconds, then asks me for some random Hex or ASCII key in the same type of window I put the password in (Secrets for Noel -- KDE Daemon). Since a key is already typed into the window, I press OK, which then causes the network manager to go back to 'setting network address', then the window pops up again and keeps repeating itself.
I'm running Opensuse 11.4 with KDE, and my driver is ath9k. I don't know much about linux so please don't tell me to 'recompile this' or 'change this setting' without explaining how to do it. Please help, I've been unable to connect to wireless in OpenSUSE for 2 weeks now.

Jan 1, 2011Running ubuntu 10.10 here, brand new install/machine.USB wireless based on a realtek chipset. I spent a few days trying ndiswrapper, and now have the native driver up and running. I can see the network(s) but can't connect. If I encrypt the network, i get a bad password error from wicd network manager (All encypt. methods- Weps, WPA etc) If I open my wireless up with no encryption, i receive a "can't obtain IP" error.

Apr 4, 2011I updated my system from FC13 2.6.34.7-66 to 2.6.34.8-68 for both the kernel and the kmod-wl RPM's. After doing so, iwconfig wlan0 key 1234567890 no longer works. I get an error indicating 'invalid argument'. If I reboot using the previous kernel/wl.ko module, it works The size of the wl.ko module increased in size by almost 30%. Did I somehow get the wrong RPM?

May 26, 2011I'm running Slackware 13.1 with fluxbox as my wm. I want to set up network-manager along with the pptp plugin. So far I've installed the NetworkManager and the network-manager-pptp plugin along with all the dependencies specified in the slackbuild packages which I downloaded from [URL]. I could use some help configuring the network-manager so that I can launch it as a regular user rather than as root and I want it to come up in the fluxbox toolbar if possible.

Sep 8, 2010I'm currently setting up a vlan network and after reading several man pages I still have 2 questions / problems:
1. I would want to put several subnets into one vlan.Meaning for example, I want to have the following Vlans with subnets:
vlan1 10.1.1.0/24
vlan2 10.1.2.0/24
vlan3 10.1.3.0/24
vlan3 10.1.4.0/24
vlan3 10.1.5.0/24
Is that possible?
EDIT: I found a sample configuration, sadly without any comments, where there are defined some interfaces named vlan1:0 trough vlan1:3. Could that be the option I've been looking for.However in the definition of the vlan1 device it is configured with the subnetmask 255.0.0.0 . I would like to know the mechanics of that option, too.
2. In the wlan part of the network I want to have a dhcp server distributing ip addresses. However I want hosts the server 'knows' (by mac address) to be in a different vlan than those unknown. Is there any way to achieve that? If yes, do I need special wlan access points or can I do it by my configurable switch or by the server?
Fedora Networking :: Network Manager Has Disappeared
Mar 11, 2009I updated my FC10 just a day back. The problem is that Netwrok Manager has disappeared. And in spite of re-installing it, it doesn't appear on the panel when i enter 'NetworkManager' as root in the terminal.I have a USB modem right now. Update was made through a broadband connection. Ethernet works perfectly well but this USB modem of mine doesn't work at all. And I have to use USB not Ethernet.

Jan 20, 2009I have run Fedora 9 and 10 on my Dell Inspiron 640m for about 6 months now and generally experience very few issues with it. Specifically I've been running Fedora 10 KDE 64bit since it was launched. Up until I had to reload it a couple of weeks ago my Vodafone Huawei E172 3G dongle worked perfectly with Network Manager. Since the reload the dongle is detected by the OS (lsusb lists it correctly, etc) but nothing I do will make it appear in Network Manager.
I've tried manually configuring a GSM connection then plugging it in, but no joy. I've also tried using it in my Acer Aspire One which runs Fedora 10 XFCE and it work, but when I try it in another Dell Laptop running Fedora 10 KDE 64 bit it doesn't. I'm assuming that a recent update must have caused some issue as it has definitely worked in both Dell laptops in the past. As mentioned I've reloaded recently but the other laptop hasn't been.
I'm unsure where to go from here. I haven't been able to get Vodafone's beta drivers working under F10 (although I did under F9) and can't find any posts on this issue. The version of Network Manager that I'm running is NetworkManager-0.7.0-1.git20090102.fc10.src.rpm, which was released shortly before I reloaded. Chances are I just didn't try my dongle between the update coming out and the reload, so didn't notice the problem before hand.
Fedora Networking :: Network Manager Settings All Grayed Out ?
Mar 10, 2009I'm running Fedora 10. My Network Manager settings are all grayed out. They are uneditable. I can see the detected settings, but not change them. All of the settings fields are disabled.
Is there a way to enable these, so that they can be edited?
Starting with the menu in the upper left corner of the GNOME screen: System/Preferences/Internet And Network/Network Connections
The Network Manager window appears correctly.
I see all automatically generated settings that were created for my various devices:
In particular, I want to be able to edit "Auto vmnet8", for VMware usage.
I know about the workaround of going back to the manual network configuration as used in older versions of Fedora, such as editing the files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* and then enabling the old "network" service and disabling the "NetworkManager" service.
However, this workaround really won't work in this situation. The VMware interfaces, vmnet1 and vmnet8, are virtual interfaces that *only* exist when the VMware services are running. The VMware services are started *after* the old manual network configuration would be applied. So, at the time the scripts in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts are processed, the vmnet1 and vmnet8 devices do not yet exist! I'm hesitant to change the numbering of services, lest other things break (VMware on Fedora 10 is rather fragile already).
I love the feature of NetworkManager to be able to automatically apply settings to newly materialized network devices (such as vmnet1 and vmnet8 when VMware is loaded). However, I need to also be able to edit those settings.
Is there a solution that will make my Network Manager "Edit" window not be entirely grayed out? I can see the settings pages just fine, but unfortunately, they are all disabled and I can't edit them at all.
Fedora Networking :: Network Manager Connects With 'auto Eth 0'
Jun 23, 2009I got a little problem with network manager. I got two connections in it, with two different DNS-Servers, because the one of my provider is very slow I surf with opendns, but sometimes that slows down too, so I want to change if necessary. Both connections got the same fixed IP.That worked all fine, until I got my new router (it's a Netgear WGU 624). It's connected by cable and I configured it like the old one. But for some reason instead of connecting to the manually configured connections, my fedora 10 creates a new one "auto eth 0" with a dynamic IP. So every time I boot or switch on from standby my PC connects with this one and I have to manually set it to the right connection. There's no chance to edit or delete it cause those two buttons are grey and won't work. I also tried restarting network manager manually and I also tried starting it with su as root.

NetworkManager always routes the whole network traffic over my home network if i am connected to the home network.If i set the "Use this connection only for resources on its network" I have do manually say:

After that only the correct traffic runs over the vpn. Now my question is it possible to setup the route via the networkmanager gui?

Mar 27, 2010After an update in mid-February I can no longer get Network Managero run anyinterface. I tried downgrading ppp, but that did not help. I have tried to delete all devices, but there is no user interface from which I can do that. Network Manager does not appear in any system tray. I even did a complete remove and reinstall, to no avail.This is true on both 32 and 64 bit Fedora 12, and on laptops, desktops and VBox VMs.Here is what I see in messages.log:

Dec 21, 2010I'm trying to share internet connection with my wifi capable mobile device. For that I'm creating ad-hoc wifi connection in networkmanager with 'shared to other computers' ipv4 option. And there is the problem - the device cannot get the setting via DHCP. The firewall is adjusted properly by NM, dnsmasq is started. I've looked at dnsmasq arguments string and found that the temporary config file which is provided by NM is empty. So, where else should I look for a possible reason or should I just post a NM bug?

Fedora Networking :: Network Connection Manager Gone / Not Working
May 15, 2011Fresh install of Fedora 14 from Live cd.Used it for an hour or so, d-loaded some programs, had ti all running great. Wired connection to internet. Had the Network Connection Manager icon in panel. There was an icon saying new updates, alot of them, like 400 or so. Told it to go ahead and up date, left room. Came back hour later was done, said it needed to re boot, so I did. From then on, no internet, not icon, no Network Connection in the drop down list for preferences.
What I have tried:Worked off live cd, again, all works fine, icon, manager, internet all there.In installed version: In terminal, typed service Network Manager, it said unrecognized service.Did yum install network manager. It started to do it, but looked like it was trying to get stuff off mirrors, and of course there is no internet access. error PYCURJ ERROR 6.Of course I can re install, but I figure I will just end up in the same place a few hours from now.

Fedora Networking :: Does Network Manager In F15 Support Bridging
Aug 24, 2011does Network Manager in Fedora 15 support bridging and if so, can you configure the bridge using your wireless interface? All of the information I've come across so far said that you can NOT create a bridge using a wireless interface, and that Network Manager doesn't support bridging, but this info was also from Fedora 12 and below, so I don't know if it's still relevant for Fedora 15. I would certainly hope that by now you can make a bridge from a wireless interface. Even the lowly VMware Player offers this option.

Jul 3, 2009I'm currently on F11, and experienced problems with Network Manager. Whenever I to connect to a network, wired or wireless, it just seems to try to connect, and then after 2-3 seconds, it just reports "Disconnected"..
Then I switched to network, and both wired and wireless works. so I don't think there is any driver or hardware issue...
Does anyone have any idea of this problem? The network manager have worked on the live CD version ( before installed to HD).

Sep 5, 2009I've set up a caching nameserver on my laptop running Fedora 11. The problem with this is that NetworkManager always overwrites the entry that points to the local nameserver. NetworkManager no longer respects /etc/dhclient.conf or at least its scripts run after dhclient.conf. Also it doesn't respect /etc/sysconfig/ network-scripts/ifcfg-* setting of DNS{1.2}.The man page of NetworkManager describes scripts that run in /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d which can be run when interfaces are brought up and down. I've written a script that will put the entry needed for the local nameserver.
