I'm trying to set my computer up as a server. I've installed LAMP, but now my problem is getting a static ip. I've tried several tutorials, but with each one, I seem to somehow disable my internet connection.
I'm almost positive that this is all over my head, but my aim is for it to not be.
I figured that i would like to have a static ip address so that i could always know what the internal ip address was of my server. But when i make the address static, I am not able to SSH in from a different machine on my network. The network is wireless/wired, through my D-Link router. I can't even ping the server when i give it a static ip. Is there a way that i can have a static ip address and still have it be seen by other machines in my wireless network?
I have had to re-install everytime I need to make changes to my etc/network/interfaces file. Otherwise i am told that permission is denied, even for sudo. Is there a way around this ?
I have 2 Ethernet connections, one (eth0) for the internet which gets set with dhcp, and one (eth1) for my internal network on which I have dhcp3-server running. I set eth1 to use static IP in interfaces, but every time I reset the network, it is fine for a couple of minutes, and switches over do being served by my own dhcp server on the same machine. (the interfaces file clearly says "iface eth1 inet static")

i have followed multiple guides to make my home server use a static ip address. no matter what i do it always reverts back to its dhcp address after about 2 minutes. how do i get the static ip address to stick, or be permanant.

However, establishing static connection is driving me batty. Will not take. I've reconfigured "interfaces" file several times. My fingers are numb ifdown-ing and ifup-ing and /etc/init.d/network restart-ing.
I have two files in /etc/network ... interfaces and interfaces~ (one static and the other dhcp). I can switch them in and out of play. The dhcp works and pings out like a champ. static is dead, just dead. Cannot ping router ... nothing.
I assigned a static ip to my Ubuntu Server machine and it cannot access the web now. It can access anything on the LAN. The other two nodes on the network (one wifi one hardwired) can both access the web just fine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAm attempting to set a static IP address on a server (to be used with Mythtv) and is running mythbuntu 10.04 (apologies if this is the wrong place to post this). I can set a static IP address that is in the range of 192.168.1.x on other machines on the network but when I try with the server it is not able to connect to the network. When using the DHCP rather than manually assigning the address it is assigned an address with the 10.0.0.x range. Why is it doing this I have never have this problem on other ubuntu boxes (and this one prior to a format of the OS).
The router/gateway is 192.168.1.1 I did have a DHCP server on the mythbox before formatting it and I was able to assign a static 192.168 address and retain internet connectivity. But I have re-enabled the DHCP server on my router since formatting the box.
I have an Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 that I have given a static IP address. Every six hours or so I will lose connectivity to it and when I type ifconfig to look at the network information, it has been given an address via dhcp. If I run the /etc/init.d/networking restart command the IP address goes back to my static address and things are fine for another 6 hours or so. Here is what is in my interfaces file:

This machine is also a DHCP server and I checked to make sure there are no other DHCP servers on my network. Right now my fix is to have a Cron job running that runs the reset command every 5 hours, but I would like to find a more permanent solution.
Server has been moved to a different locations and so the IP has been changed now the hostname is changed to something other that what it was before.
Could it be the rDNS that is causing this?
Note: this is not a DHCP connection.
Our F14 server is looses access to the network once we set a static IP.The same IP, if used on any other pc works fine.We had the same exact setup in our F10 server also.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having mysterious wired network problem with my Karmic/9.10 machine. It hasn't been in network a while, but now I finally got the cabling done. I can't get the IP from dhcp server (TW-EA510), and static settings doesn't work either. Fresh cabling showed OK 1Gb connection on tester, and win7 laptop works fine. I even tried with long cable though the rooms, but it doesn't help, so it definately isn't the new cabling.

Motherboard is some old Lanparty with two ethernet ports, NVidia CK804 and Marvell 88E800 rev 13 Gigabit netwok adapters, neither of them works. At least another of them has been worked earlier when I last got it wired. It's been a while, so I'm not sure which one of them and with different router if that matters.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have two servers on a vlan at my datacentre/colocation and previously both servers had public IPs on their eth0 interfaces. The servers are HP ProLiant DL360s - one is a G4 and one is a G5 The newer G5 is now the LAMP server and the G4 has been retired and I want to repurpose it as an iSCSI target using openfiler freenas or similar.
My G5 has public/static IPs lashed to the eth0 physical interface and the eth1 is not configured to do anything yet. The G4 will have both interfaces available - perhaps one for ssh access from one of my static public IPs and the other to be a private IP on the local vlan. Here is what I am trying to get my head around...
The G5
eth0 - Public IP - full LAMP services on two or three virtual interfaces
eth1 - Private IP 192.168.0.1
The G4
eth0 - Public IP for ssh
eth1 - Private IP 192.168.0.2
Because my traffic between eth1 on these boxes is via private IPs on the local private vlan it doesn't add to my quota for bandwidth. How do I go about configuring the routing and gateways and other aspects of this so that I can run a private IP space network between the eth1s and still serve the outside world from the eth0s...
I am afraid that if I assign the private IPs to the eth1 interfaces the routing may either not work or interfere with the access to the production internet facing interfaces (eth0s).

You'll notice the IPs are a little strange. This is because the sever is now on a special subnet dedicated to isolating specific servers. I also edited the resolv.conf file to include the proper DNS servers (including one of Google's just in case all hell broke lose).The problem is that, seemingly randomly, the machine will lose the ability to talk to the outside world. I know the machine is still up, but it acts like it has no networking at all.
I think part of the issue is that there is no DHCP running to this subnet (nor will there be) and the dhclient seems to still be running on occasion which causes some sort of conflict (no idea what) which causes networking to die. I cannot, however, remove the dhcp3-client package as it also causes the ubuntu-minimal package to be removed and that would be bad.
I want to run networking on my laptops in different environment (home, office, airport etc). I found that Netowrk Manager assigns information from DHCP although I requested fixed IP and configured the gateway and DNS. If I reconfigure the DHCP server so that there is no free IP address, the laptop refuses to connect. When I remove the interfaces from the network manager, I get the fixed IP address, /etc/resolv.conf is not overwritten from DHCP but WiFi connection cannot be established, there is no dialog for setting WPA-PSK. The static IP address seems to be taken into account only if the DHCP server is not found. I need the static address at home and in my office because I need the possibility to ssh to my laptop from another computer but I need IP from DHCP possibly authenticating against RADIUS (Eduroam) when travelling somewhere else. Is there an easy way how to achieve it and how to switch profiles easily? And I cannot switch DHCP off because some devices in my LAN cannot work without it.

Is it essential that I request a static IP from my isp? or could I suggest to the webhost that they whitelist the first portion of my IP which rarely changes? i.e 90.195.xx.xx, or *sky.com for my ftp account?
I have a dell inspirion 6400/1505 laptop running ubuntu 10.04 has 2 network controllers wired and wireless the wired is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX (rev 02) the wireless is a Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG I have the wired configured for static ip 192.168.0.105 the wireless through network manager configured static ip 192.168.0.101 static works great,reboot and all is lost for the wireless default back to DHCP (wired stays static) and i loose the nameserver and have to reconfigure it all over. is there away to remove network manager an manually edit the wireless settings? i know how to edit the wired network interfaces do i just add wlan0 as a static ip ?

I'm trying to get a static ip on it because I don't have to keep physically going to the computer to find the IP address so I can SSH and configure apache, mediawiki, and all the other cool stuff Ubuntu can do. I can't (aka really don't want to) use an Ethernet b/c its kinda far, but I don't think thats the problem - wifi vs. ethernet. It's connected to a laptop, so it has wifi built-in. Where "*removed*" means that I have taken the text out of this post for security. At the top, I WAS going to do static ethernet, but I decided I wasn't really going to use and and set it back to DHCP (that what the commented part is). My laptop (and all other computers, actually) are on DHCP and for some reason switch between 192.168.2.* and 192.168.1.* because some configuration is messed up in my router (I can't fix it; no permissions). I have a samba and apache server on the server and want full-time access to it without ssh-ing and changing the ip to the 192.168.1 or 192.168.2 networks every time my laptop switches networks, respectively. I can't access the server with my laptop when they're on different "networks".

I NAT the port 80 from my modem to the webserver and I can access my webserver from internet using typing my static ip. If my static ip is 122.67.xx.xx, then I need to type http://122.67.xx.xx. and i have a domain name mydomain.com pointed to this 122.67.xx.xx ip in my C-panel. I can ping mydomain.com from internet but if I type http://mydomain.com I am getting the following error from my browser Unable to determine IP address from host name for mydomain.com and The dnsserver returned: Name Error: The domain name does not exist.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIf I have a regular 192.168.1.0/24 network, and configure a static NAT rule assigning 173.194.35.104 to 192.168.1.20 - would that be the virtual equivalent of setting up this device directly to the internet with that public IP? How will static NAT affect open ports etc., if I host an ftp on 192.168.1.20 and assign him 173.194.35.104, there will be no need for portforwarding?
Also - will using static NAT, assigning 192.168.1.20 the public ip 173.194.35.104 affect the way other local devices in the 192.168.1.0/24 network communicate with 192.168.1.20, or will it still be the same? Finally, NAT and VPN can be a bit tricky, but will doing a static NAT rule eliminate all these problems or is there anything I need to know here? You may also wonder why I don't just try for myself and see what happens, but that would involve purchasing the additional IP's and a more advanced router as the current one does not support multiple WAN-ip's.
I recently switched to WEP encryption from a functional WPA encryption and I've been having problems since (I need WEP for another device and I understand it's less secure.) I tried updating /etc/network/interfaces for the new network using the information here:

I am trying to set up a static ip address. I am using the visual interface. The problem may be that I don't know what they mean by "DNS servers" the linksys says it is 0.0.0.0 but entering that doesn't help. It says "connected" on the "notification area" icon, but I have no internet. I have rebooted the computer and the router.I deleted Auto eth0 and when I added a new connection it is now "Wired connection 1". If I change it to "automatic DHCP" instead of manual, it works fine.What am I missing, I have easily been able to set static IPs on WinXP machines, I would think Ubuntu would be easier.
