I was running openSUSE 11.2 on a Dell Studio with a mirrored disk. The upgrade to 11.3 went well it seemed until it got to the point of installing the new bootloader. Then it couldn't mount /boot. Otherwise it seemed to go OK though. It completed and rebooted. I see a very brief flash of the word GRUB on the reboot, but then the screen blanks and I get the BIOS messages again. How can I now install GRUB so that I can boot. I had a similar issue with 11.2 in the past, and was able to repair GRUB using 11.2's DVD's "Repair Installation" which had tools to reinstall GRUB.11.3's DVD is missing this option.I'd prefer not to do a fresh install as then I will have a lot of OS setup to repeat (Samba, Apache, Trac, etc.....)

I eventually gave up and migrated to mdadm. Works just fine. Having upgraded to jessie and solved one problem
[URL] ....
I find the next one. When I boot into jessie my RAID device (just a data partition not /) is not found causing the boot to fail as per problems reported here
[URL] ....
After booting I can mount my RAID device but if it's in the fstab when booting it fails. Also, I notice that some of my lvm device names have changed. After a bit of hunting around I found a couple of solutions pointing to running dmraid as a service during boot and changing the entry for the RAID device in fstab to use the UUID.
[URL] .....
This seems to work. However this seems to be a workaround and as the lvm device paths for my / and /usr partitions have also changed, I'm wondering if there is a bug here as mentioned in the second link?
The / and /usr paths changed to /dev/dm-2 and /dev/dm-3 from the /dev/mapper/ form.

I upgraded from 9.x to 10.10. Under 9.x my wireless usb dongle worked correctly. After upgrade it does not. I checked the dongle on another machine and it works correctly. I inserted a usb memory stick and the system found it as a drive correctly. I assume from this that both the dongle and usb port are ok. The wireless device is a D-Link G122 A2 which is on the supported list (it ran out of the box on 9.x). The link light did not even come on. So I installed ndiswrapper and the windows D-Link driver (note that this was not needed in 9.x). Now the link light comes on and the wireless router is found but the unit will still not connect.
The log file entries on dongle insertion are as follows:
It appears that the problem is with wlan0 not being ready. If this is the case how do I make it ready?

Both server (web01), in DMZ, and client (app01), intranet, are Linux OEL5.5.
A few hints follows:
1- I ssh to web01, in DMZ, from a intranet machine on my desktop, export my DISPLAY, and try to bring up xclock; nothing happens.
2- traceroute from web01 to app01 fails.
3- NFS mount from web01, nfs server, to nfs client, app01, fails.
How should my network configuration on web01 or app01 be to make this NFS mount from web01 to app01 work? Each server has 4 NICs, I've only used eth0.

I have a Dell 1525 laptop with an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 currently installed. My Sprint Merlin EX 720 auto connected through NM 0.7 /Karmic 9.10. After an upgrade to NM 0.8/Lucid 10.04 NM hangs and then disconnects. The card works perfectly after the upgrade when I use KPPP. I would like to get the card to be recognized right off the bat in NM like it did before.

I am trying to upgrade RH9 to F10. I have downloaded dvd iso image i386. The SHA1 integrity check passes. The installer fails media check due to "errors". I did an independent verification of the DVD and zero errors found. Download was from Fedora's own torrent, so files should be verified anyway. If I bypass the media check I get the message : Running anaconda 11.4.1.62 the Fedora system installer - please wait.....

I am trying to set uamsung clx2160N as a standalone network printer on my home network. It is a printer with standalone network capability and is connected directly to my router and has a static IP number. We have a few Windows computers at home and they had no problem detecting the printer, installing the drivers and working. Unfortunately my Ubuntu computer recognises the printer and I can even access it's setup and diagnositcs through its IP number. However when I try to add it as a printer, drivers for it cannot be located. #ve tried setting it up three ways:1. Using Samsung's own setup package - finds printer and all the details it needs to work but offers no drivers2. Using Ubuntu's printer setup - recognises printer but stalls at Searching for Drivers dialog3. Trying to *** printer using CUPS - no problem finding and recognising printer, but when I come to search for the driver I get Internal Server Error.
I have of course been trying to do all of these as root. That's the limit of my knowledge reached and searches on the net aren't helping me either. The printer works fine directly connected via USB, so the drivers are on the computer somewhere. How do I get them set up to use the printer on the network?

I recently re-installed lucid on a computer which had a working ethernet printer queue, to a Brother MFC-5490cn. I installed the drivers from the ubuntu package archive and set up two printer queues, one for "dnssd://<ip-address>" and the other "lpd://<ip-address>/BINARY_P1". The first appears to recognize that the printer color ink is low, so perhaps there is some communication, but nothing ever comes out of the printer. The second queue appears to fail completely.
I vaguely recall that for my previous installation I used the package supplied by Brother, but that it was very difficult, since the package no longer matched the Ubuntu file layout and locations.

I have managed to install ubuntu server and set it quite nicely to share my files and printers over my network. I have two printers, a Lexmark e232 and a hp C3180 multifunctional printer (i.e. printer+scaner+a copy function). I have no problem installing the Lexmark printer on my windows 7 computers on the network, however, the All in One printer only gets recognized as a printer but there is no way to get it to scan. I have been reading on the web about all in one printers but I don't quite understand what the issues are.
Is there a way for me to get the full functionality of this printer over the network? I think this wouldn't be a problem if there was some sort of software designed by hp that would allow me to add printers that are not directly connected to the computer (via usb) but are shared from another pc on the network.

I have a problem with a bad entry in my system-config-printer on my notebook computer which I think is interfering with my ability to print. I run fedora 10 on several systems in my house. On one desktop, I have a printer hosted which I think I have successfully setup for wireless network sharing (an HP895) using IPP.My problem seems to be a bad entry in my system-config-printer on my notebook computer which seems to stall when I try to print from applications (Firefox for example.) on the notebook. If I open up "Printing", I have 3 printers listed... one of them is for when the printer is attached directly to the notebook, one of them is the working printer description "printer" and the 3d is the bad entry. If I click on the bad entry to try to delete it, I don't have that option, but If I try to look at the "properties" for that entry, system-config-printer stalls (as do other applications when the printing dialog box starts up, and I have to force them to shut down.)
I will attach some screenshots and a copy of my /etc/cups/printers.conf file. How do I get rid of this "bad entry" in the system-config-printers GUI ? It doesn't seem to exist in the printers.conf file.

Epson R285, good as gold on FC14, and intially onFC15. Entering the cups admin tool, localhost:631, the printer is set up, the correct drivers are slected, paper size OK.
Cant get it to print a test page, its wants the password for CUPS and wont accept root, but root login can change all other params.
On the gnome printer applet , you can unlock it, add printer select local, and it goes away and finds the Epson R285, click on "add" it queries the printer and immediately drops back to the original printer applet. Without adding a printer. I haven't succeeded with network printing, the firewall is open on port 631, yet any attempt to find it from another computer fails. The gnome printer appet which interfaced with Gnome 2.x was nice, you could select everything needed. Not with this thing.

I am trying to test GAINSCHA receipt printers on opensuse 11.4They have supplied drivers and filter. I have added filter to /usr/lib/cups/filter and drivers(ppd files) to /usr/share/cups/model/gainscha/. I can add the printer model and driver from Yast. The printer is a serial printer and I connect to it using 'usb-to-serial' converter. I can raw-print direct to printer by, ' echo hello > /dev/ttyUSB0 '. It works.Serial port parameters used while setting up Cups queue are correct. ( Tested via cutecom, opening port with the same parameters and writing to the port. It is also printing). Now when I print from any application, the job is held up in Cups queue for reasons, ' no permissions to port'. I tried becoming root and printing from kwrite.

I am trying to mount my usb printer in Ubuntu Server 9.10. I'm trying to do this so that the usb printer will be picked up by vmware server so the Windows XP guest I have on there will then be able to access the printer as if it were hooked up to it directly. I found a few posts online and this is what I've done so far. I found in a couple of posts that they said I should uncomment out the following lines in /etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh. Well I found that the file didn't exsist. Someone posted up their copy of it so I copied that code into the mountdevsubfs.sh script. That code is the following:
Code:
#! /bin/sh
### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: mountdevsubfs mountvirtfs
# Required-Start: mountkernfs
# Required-Stop:
[code]....
I also added this line to the bottom of my /etc/fstab file
Code:
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto 0 0
When I go ahead and run the script it errors out on this line:
Code:
. /lib/init/mount-functions.sh
I went to go look in /lib/init and the mount-functions.sh script doesn't exist. I've googled this and I haven't been able to find anything. why am I missing /lib/init/mount-functions.sh and how can I get that script?

i am very frustrated with my ubuntu system which is meant as a workstation-server. It seems to loose track of its drives every time I add diskspace. Now every other boot (it seems) it says (among other things: VFS: can't find ext3 filesystem on dev sdd5) drops me to a maintenance-shell and asks for the root password (whats that in ubuntu, the user password does not word) - so I can't log in. Ctrl-D sometimes works and it boots through or boots after warmstart by Ctrl-Alt-Del.
[edit: found out that with alt-f3 i can access a normal shell - good - but how do I start up the GUI in ubuntu? - startx does not work] I have manually fsck'd all ext2/3 partitions form a ubuntu booted from CD - still it says something about not being able to mount /dev/sdd5.Since every now and then I have so much trouble bringing up the machine I am quite unhappy. I suspect the constant updates are prone to break things - is that so?And how do I resolve this issue. Unfortunately there is nothing about the errors in /var/log/messages or dmesg so it is no use posting it here. Where are such errors recorded? [edit: I changed the mappings in fstab to resolve the issue - still it is awkward that drives get messed up so easily. Are UUIDs in fstab less error prone when moving drives around, or do they have other issues?]

So a few hours ago I opened up GPartEd from a live CD, and one of my operations was moving the /home partition up a little. In the process, it was changed from /dev/sda8 to /dev/sda7. Well upon the next boot, /home failed to mount. I edited /etc/fstab (and apparantly DropBox had just commented out the line that mounts /home so I have NO IDEA how /home was being mounted before) and still no dice. So every time I boot, I have to go to manual recovery and type mount /home before I can boot.
Is there some way I can mount /home without making a "git 'er done" script?
On a side note, Google Chrome has refused to open since the partition editing.
Oh, and, in case it is helpful, here's the contents of /etc/fstab:
Quote:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0

We are testing Ubuntu as the base for our products, we create custom Karmic installations (debootstrap + some extra packages) and then deploy our software, these systems can start in two different modes: "normal" and "read-only". We must say the system works quite well, but after some time, several systems are showing a common error: they don't start or fail showing an unexpected inconsistency for one of the partitions (every system has one hard disk with four partitions), the message refers to an unexpected inconsistency. When this error appears, a recovery console is started and I can run fsck and answer "yes" to its recommendations, after this the system runs again without errors. The problem is that this error can appear again at a random time and we need to avoid this "manual fixing" process, I've searched the web and found some references to a bug? in an early Karmic version: [URL]
Besides ALSA 1.0.23, we use only standard Karmic tools (all from the official repositories), we are running the latest kernel update available for Karmic, and don't know whether this inconsistency is caused by our software or by the system itself, or maybe because of incorrect shutdown?
At the moment, I'm setting a new test system using Lucid. Does anybody know if this is a "common" error in Karmic?

I want log in locally to my Lucid (10.04) workstation and have my code saved over the network on my samba account At work, all developers have samba user ids and when we were running Red Hat, we went thru the following procedure to get setup.
* open a shell session to NFS server and execute the "id" command to get my samba user information.
Code:
$> ssh l alberto our_nfs_server
$> id
uid=7090(alberto) gid=100(users) groups=100(users)
* Create locally a login on my Linux workstation with the same login and uid.
Code:
$>sudo useradd u 7090 g 100 d /home/alberto s /bin/bash alberto
[code].....
Code:
mount error(13): Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting our_nfs_server:/d0/homedirs/alberto It does not work at all!!?? However, the same procedure on a RedHat workstation works fine. No errors.

I've just upgraded to 11.3 (64 bit) and the nfs client does not quite work. I have 3 mounts I try to make, and 2 out of 3 work. The third seems to mount, but shows an empty directory. There are no errors in /var/log/messages on the 11.3 client or the server. The only difference between the 3 mounts that I can see is that the failing mount is of an xfs system. The other two happen to be ext3. Is that visible to the nfs client? Or is that a red herring? I can still mount all 3 just fine from my other opensuse 11.2 systems.
For info, the server is running opensuse 10.3...
Code:

My 4 GB 2nd generation Ipod nano will not mount to my Compaq Presario 2105US running Xubuntu 9.10. I get a message that says, "Failed to mount Ipod" with a description that says, "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so ."
I even went back to my XP to restore the ipod to factory settings essentially formating it, to see if that would help, but I get the same result.
Is there something that I may have overlooked?

One entry I have put in fstab results in the failure of a partition to be mounted at boot time. I get the message:
Code: The disk drive for /media/WinXP is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery If I choose M and enter the command: Code:mount -t ntfs /dev/sdb1 /media/WinXP then I get no error message, but the partition still doesn't seem to be mounted, when boot completes.
I don't understand this failure. I have created my fstab file using UUIDs to boot Ubuntu on my dual boot machine. It works fine, booting from the hard-disk which is Master on my Secondary IDE channel. For Ubuntu booting the MBR and grub menu are on this disk. The default is to boot Ubuntu , but with an option to select Windows Xp.
As an aside, I can set an option in my BIOS to make the Master disk on the Primary IDE channel the first disk, rather than the second disk. Then the system boots from the MBR on this Primary IDE channel and boots only to WinXP. That works fine.
When running Ubuntu I use space on the Windows disk (on the Primary IDE channel) to hold backups of key Ubuntu files in case I loose Ubuntu - as I did for the past few days. So, to mount this partition I inserted this line into my fstab:
Code:
UUID=0e4851c44851ab6b/media/WinXPntfsnosuid, nodev, allow_other00 I know the UUID is correct because I have checked it with blkid. But the partition is not mounted at boot time. I don't even get an icon for the partition on my desk top. It appears in the 'places' menu, as unmounted, but mounts as soon as I click on it. However, this causes some of my linux apps, which want to load and save to this partition, to post an error message until I have manually mounted it via clicking on it in the Places menu. I want to avoid this manual step by having the partition automatically loaded at boot time. What am I doing wrong?

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. The Update Manager did an update to HPLIP, the Hewlett Packard Linux Internet Printing software, one or two days ago. When I went to print today, the HP Officejet 4500 printer showed up in Open Office when my mouse pointed to the printer icon. But, the printer wouldn't work. Then I noticed that the HPLIP Toolbox icon was moved from the Applications - Accessoires folder, to the System - Preferences folder. I reinstalled all the HPLIP software, using the Synaptic Package Manager. When I click on the HPLIP Toolbox & run the HP Device Manager, it says "No Installed HP Devices Found".I was a little surprised to see the software upgrade caused the HPLIP toolbox to move fromhe Applications folder to the System folder. Because of this, I suspect there may be a bug in the upgraded software? Is anyone else having this problem?

I am saddened that I can't install any Linux distro with ease on my HP m8530f computer which runs on a m2n78-la motherboard. It has a Phenom CPU, 6 SATA ports and probably a fakeRaid (at least that's what I guess is causing problem). The Fedora 14 Desktop install goes all the way to the end and then I get a fail message due to not being able to mount /dev/mapper/xxxxx.
P.S. the motherboard only has SATA mode or disabled for HardDrive mode and no any other options. Seems like this is an HP custom made motherboard from Asus hence the limited options in Bios setup.

I'm using OpenSuse 11.4 (x86_64) with KDE 4.
It's not possible to mount external USB (ntfs) disks with a non-root user using the Device Notifier or Dolphin. The error is:
Could not mount the following device: MyBook 2
org.freedesktop.UDisks.Error.PermissionDenied: Authentication is required
It is a permission problem; running Dolphin under root and clicking the USB disk mounts it without problems. The same should be possible to an ordinary user. The Update Applet does not work for the same reason (I can only install updates using yast).
Of course, I googled the error and there were a number of possible solutions, which I all tried. That includes allowing the action in the policy and adding the user in AdminIdentities local-authority. The file /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy contains "yes" for every option. Needless to say it doesn't make sense and I'm out of options.
