Ubuntu Networking :: No Auto Eth0 On One Lucid Box?
Jul 30, 2011
so I now have 4 Ubuntu Lucid LTS installations - terrific - but the alternative Ubuntu boot on this particular PC (all made from the same Live CD) does not have any eth0 configured, so I cannot reach even my router. I can look at the eth0 properties with "Network tools" and it has no IP or MAC. I have the network notification gremlin installed but it does not appear on the top panel. {"eth0" hardware works under Win XP, hence this post}.
I'm a novice at Ubuntu, and I am at a loss. I realise that networking is supposed to be automatic, no 'tool' should be needed, but what can I do when it has not configured?

I can't figure out why my ethernet isn't recognizing its connection. ifconfig returns the hardware address, route -n returns an empty table

Upgraded To Ubuntu 10.04 The Other Day. And when I first installed it everything worked great except for my sound card which I fixed. But there was no problem with connecting to my Router via an Ethernet cable. Then I updated the video card drivers, restarted my PC and it wouldn't connect. It would try over around 1-2 mins then tell me its disconnected. No green light activity on the router / network card either.
I've reinstalled fresh copies of Ubuntu a couple of times now, Hoping to get the default settings back. But nothing has worked since.
I looked around the net and found quite a few people had this problem on previous versions of Ubuntu but it would seem most of there fixes were for there Version, so it hasn't helped me.
Heres some info:
ifconfig:
I've tried all the various things from dhclient to ifup/ifdown etc etc.

I'm using Easytether through my HTC Droid for interwebs running Ubuntu 10.04. However I also have a home network. However when I hardwire into the network via a D-Link router (Auto eth0) my internet no longer works. The same is true when I plug in my iPod. The Droid loses it's connection. What is the problem?

I'm running Kubuntu 10.4. My problem is that Network Manager keeps defaulting back to Auto eth0. I have created a new wired connection and set my manual addresses. I have ticked the 'connect automatically' button. Every time I reboot or wake up it reverts back to Auto eth0.I did have wicd installed but this was not reconnecting after wake up (said it was connected but I couldn't ping etc), this is a pain also.

Network card (82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection) is DISABLED upon reboot. Only way to bring it out of disabled mode is to rerun dhclient to obtain a DHCP lease. Upon reboot though, the NIC is back into disabled mode.
A workaround I have found is to uncomment the iface line in /etc/network/interfaces, but considering I have 14 identical PCs to this one, and only this one is currently giving me grief, I am trying to find the root cause
The machine successfully obtains an IP using the PXE boot option in the BIOS - so I can hopefully rule out hardware problems as a cause. Network cable has been replaced, as the location of the machine to a different switch port.

When I log onto my Ubuntu 9.04 boot I am disconnected from the internet, on my windows 7 boot It works just fine, I have attempted disabling networking, power cycling the modem and router, and re-enabling networking, no dice though. hovering over the connection icon tells me that there is no network connection.
Opening the edit connections window tells me that there a wired connection called Auto eth0 that is set to never, and that is all that I can find. I hunted for other forums on this and found a few but none with a successful resolution.

I want to set my desktop IP address to always be 192.168.1.2. The NetworkManager connects to the network automatically and the IP address is assigned randomly. I can set up another connection in NetworkManager and always change over. But is there any way to make the default eth0 interface to be permanently set to a certain address (using NetworkManager, not ifup)?

5.10 Breezy configured as machine controller. Works great eth0 is a fixed IP to communicate with controller comms board. Not easy at all to alter - the comms board is hard coded to listen on eth0 for commands.
I can use eth1 as the default gateway and ping google.com, etc. But when I now attempt to communicate with the controller with netcat, e.g.
Code: echo !HH | nc 192.168.1.6 80
I obviously never get an answer since the request is passed via eth1. Using the -g option with netcat doesn't work either. I had a look at iptables but it doesn't seem to be able to do what I want. How I can still use eth0 as my communication port to the controller whilst eth1 is the default gateway?

I have two servers on a vlan at my datacentre/colocation and previously both servers had public IPs on their eth0 interfaces. The servers are HP ProLiant DL360s - one is a G4 and one is a G5 The newer G5 is now the LAMP server and the G4 has been retired and I want to repurpose it as an iSCSI target using openfiler freenas or similar.
My G5 has public/static IPs lashed to the eth0 physical interface and the eth1 is not configured to do anything yet. The G4 will have both interfaces available - perhaps one for ssh access from one of my static public IPs and the other to be a private IP on the local vlan. Here is what I am trying to get my head around...
The G5
eth0 - Public IP - full LAMP services on two or three virtual interfaces
eth1 - Private IP 192.168.0.1
The G4
eth0 - Public IP for ssh
eth1 - Private IP 192.168.0.2
Because my traffic between eth1 on these boxes is via private IPs on the local private vlan it doesn't add to my quota for bandwidth. How do I go about configuring the routing and gateways and other aspects of this so that I can run a private IP space network between the eth1s and still serve the outside world from the eth0s...
I am afraid that if I assign the private IPs to the eth1 interfaces the routing may either not work or interfere with the access to the production internet facing interfaces (eth0s).

If I made a distro from scratch it would have been Lubuntu, cept I'm sure my theming would have been horrible. Now Ive installed on a couple of my Laptops, and even had a few friends convert, and for the most part everything is hunkus doris, cept one small issue thats keeping me from slapping it on my trusty laptop. I'm lost as to what the problem could be. Ive tried just about all I can think of, but I use sprint mobile broadband to connect to the net and then use Network Manager to share this connection with the laptops and Palmtops around the house. I can get my sprint modem to connect thats not a big problem the problem is now I cannot get the Auto Eth0 to connect to send out as a share. It just refuses to connect. Now this is not a Lubuntu problem at all Im sure its somehow a Lxde problem, as Mint Lxde, PeppermintOS, and so on do the same thing, refusing to connect Auto Eth0 while Sprint is connected. Any Gnome based distro this works flawless, as does Xfce distros, so Im sure this is somehow something within Lxde. Im sure its down to just "missing" a file or some stupid overlooked thing.

I'm running a dual boot Ubuntu 10.04/Backtrack 4 (Ubuntu 8.10) system. I can get internet in the BT4 side but not in the Lucid side. In Lucid I can ping my router, and the network manager says I'm good to go, but I can't get to any web sites. It all started when I tried to put my laptop on another network by mimicking the settings of a computer I had just unplugged from the network. MAC address and all.

I am trying to have an encrypted drive auto-mounted once i log into Lucid.
I created the encrypted drive with the disk utility in administration menu
I also have the password remembered "forever" so when i am logged in i just click the icon for the drive on left panel and it mounts.
I am able to find the uuid and know what device is called sdd but i don`t know how to put it into fstab if that is possible?

I have noticed that a common issue to several distros is the fact that the networking subsystem doesn't automatically detect the link if an ethernet connection is disconnected and then re-connected to the NIC after boot. If the ethernet cable is connected after the system is up and running, nothing happens - ethtool eth0 shows link detected: no, and you have to restart the network service to let the NIC know that there is in fact a link, and actually connect. I have a Fedora14 (KDE) box with a brand new Asus motherboard with embedded NIC. Everything works great except the auto-detect of a freshly connected ethernet connection if the link is down to begin with.
Am I missing a ethernet link sentinel utility or something, or is this just the way linux works? I have done plenty of research on plenty of posts, and it seems this is a common problem, with no solution other than manually or programatically restarting the network service in a script to detect the link after a disconnect.

I have a hardware device with two ethernet ports, eth0 and eth1 running Centos 5. Basically my goal is to forward packets from eth0->eth1 and eth1->eth0 as well as get a copy of these packets for analysis. If I set IP routing to do the forwarding then I won't get a copy of the packets for analysis.

Using Lucid.
Both "auto eth0" and "Wired connection 1" appear in my network app. See screenshot. I only have one Ethernet card.
is the latter just a rename of the former? I thought so, but the "Wired connection 1" seems to be more reliable than "auto eth0"

If I uncheck and recheck "Enable Networking" in the Network Manager Applet 0.7.996 I would expect the wired network to disconnect (which it does) and reconnect (which it does NOT). So I tried sudo ifdown eth0 and got
Quote:
Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0.
ifconfig tells me
Quote:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:25:64:e8:18:2c
inet addr:192.168.0.112 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::225:64ff:fee8:182c/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

so I am at a loss. How do I stop and restart the network interface short of rebooting the machine?

i know exactly what i need to do, im just not familiar enough with command line to do it properly.i have 7 computers.the first 4 are connected to a router via wireless at one end of the house. of the last 3 only 1 will be able to access the router via wireless, so it needs to share it's one wireless connection via ethernet. this computer i'm going to call 'server'server will have two IP'swlan0 192.168.1.6 this connects to the router that has internet access.eth0 i intend to have the following settingsip:192.168.0.1sub: 255.255.0eth0 will connect to a second router, where the cat5 cable goes from the server, into the internet port of the router where i will define the router's static IP:IP: 192.168.0.100sub: 255.255.255.0gateway 192.168.0.1i have then set the router IP for LAN handling as 192.168.27.1 and all ethernet connections will have a 192.168.27.x IP.
so i need to know how to, without a gui application, use the terminal to assign server eth0 a proper IP address, and tell the server to take the connection it has and share it through eth0 to supply internet for the last 2 computers via ethernet.i had it set up in this way with a windows machine being the one that had the wifi access, but i'd rather have it setup for the ubuntu server to do this task. security is imperative for these 3 remaining machines, so just getting 2 more wifi adapters for a connection to the initial router isn't an option.the 2 that connect to server do so through SSH and though server IS connected via wireless it only makes outward connections through

On my machine (Desktop PC) I have 2 network card : wireless (rt61 802.11) and a wired card (BCM44). When I install debian 5.
The wired card is detected and logical name eth0 is assigned, while wireless is not assigned I install firmeware* software to configure the card. It is done in some way ( I used mnetwork from mepis, it works fine).
Now the problem: eth0 disapears, and no eth0 inteface found? ifconfig gives just wlan0.
Question: Why there is no eth0, it was before configuration of wlan0 ?
How to active again eth0, or ho to create the logical eth0?

I'm about to add pci ethernet card. Currently the mobo nic is eth0. When I add the new card will it by definition be eth1 (or will it become eth0 and the mobo nic become eth1)? The broader question is: how are the "eth's" numbered at boot time? If I were to add a 2nd pci nic, could I predict which would be eth1 and which would be eth2 (based on pci slot number??)? Is there somewhere to readup on this to get a broader understanding?
