Ubuntu Networking :: NetworkManager Tries To Connect To Wrong Device / Get To A Specific?
Oct 15, 2010
I have a ZTE 3G USB modem (MF645).
When I plug it, 5 devices appear: /dev/ttyUSB[0-4]. The modem device is /dev/ttyUSB2, and I can successfully connect wvdial on it.
NetworkManager detects the modem, however, it tries to connect to /dev/ttyUSB1 instead, and fails.
How does NM decides which device to connect to?
Is it possible to instruct it to connect to a specific device?

I installed ZTE MF 626 modem in my F10 with kernel 2.6.27.12-170, i run usb_modeswitch and so far things happened normally. Watching through /var/log/messages it says that F10 detects two port device for this modem: ttyUSB1 and ttyUSB2, and in the sequence it disable port ttyUSB1 BUT Network Manager still set this port.I mean, when i connect via wvdial appointing to ttyUSB2 i get connection, but Network Manager fails to do it appointing to ttyUSB1. How to change device port in Network Manager?

Yesterday I did an upgrade and today my box is unable to connect to the internet.
I have tried another cable, it didn't help.
Basically NetworkManager does not connect eth0 to the network, if I try to run ifup from the command line I get:
Code:
I can see in network configuration settings, that the device has been correctly detected and eth0 interface is correctly activated, yet when I try to uncheck the box manage by NetworkManager and start it manually, it tells me that the cable is disconnected... I've tried two different cables, different ports on my router - no help.

I'm using CentOS 5.4. I want to set-up a PPTP connection (I'm the client). I installed the NM pptp plugin from EPEL's repository. I have configured my PPTP connection in the NetworkManager applet but now I don't know how to connect to the server, I mean, there's nothing like 'Connect now'.

I'm running ubuntu 9.10 with the latest networkmanager (from ppa)I thought this could be wrong credentials setting, so i've tried a huge amount of setups (user: phonenumber, password: phonenumber, avp:telenor, seems to be the general consensus for how it should be)Is there something I'm missing or is there any way I could tail the output as NetworkManager tries to connect (hopefully seeing something like "wrong password" etc.)

I loaded F10 up on my laptop a few nights back. NetworkManager connects via Ethernet just fine. It will also connect wirelessly, but only when security is disabled. I've been using 128-bit WEP.
When I try to connect using security, this is what appears in the log:
Code:
Jan 29 21:07:17 localhost NetworkManager: <info> Activation (wlan0) Stage 1 of 5 (Device Prepare) complete.
Jan 29 21:07:17 localhost NetworkManager: <info> Activation (wlan0) Stage 2 of 5 (Device Configure) starting...

i have added a vpn connection on my Lucid desktop machine, but every time i try and connect, it fails. I also have the same, identical vpn connection on my karmic install on my laptop. everything works perfectly on Karmic, but Lucid is having problems. I have followed identical steps for creating the vpn connection on both machines: vpn connections can be made in 2 ways, the first is through the network manager, but trying to connect through the nm-applet returns an error about vpn failing to connect and "no valid vpn secrets".
I suspect this is at the root of the problem. The only way for my Lucid machine to successfully connect through the command line is if I run the openvpn command under sudo.

I cannot connect my Dell Inspiron 1300 through the NetworkManager "wired" connection, when I try to go direct to the cable modem. It fails to connect.
If I connect the cable modem to my (linksys WRT54GS) wireless router, and then connect my laptop to a wired port in the router, it connects in seconds, successfully.
This has happened to me 2 other times, when I tried to connect my laptop to a client's cable modem, because my client did not have a wireless router available, in their home.
My wireless works fine. This has me perplexed. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and NetworkManager Applet 0.8
I've tried some things to see what is going on, such as "ifconfig" "dhclient" as well as modifying the "Auto eth0" parameters and adding my laptop's MAC address, etc. Results were no fix or solution. I feel like I'm headed down the wrong road. Would someone set me straight? I have a feeling this is simpler than I think.
Do I have to actually reset my own or someone's cable modem to get this to work? I don't want to do that unless there's no other way. Is there? Let me know what commands I can or should run.

11.04 64 bit I just picked up a new high-gain usb wireless adapter that I would like to use for a while in place of the built in wireless adapter in my desktop. It is detected and works just fine. My question is this: Is there any way I can disable just the built in adapter and leave the new one active (or visa versa?) I don't want to remove the built-in one as there will be occasions that I will want to use both.

After some wonderful days with fedora with my CDMA mobile internet connection (the only connection where I live) NetworkManager can't connect anymore.
I tried to delete the settings and rewrite them without success.
I have A Novatel Ovation U720 CDMA/EDVO USB modem.
I can connect with wnXP and kubuntu, but can't connect with fedora anymore.
I wish to make the definitive move from kubuntu to fedora... but I should wait.

The auto connect feature of NetworkManager Applet (version 0.7.997) isn't working on my system. If the WiFi connection dies, Network Manager doesn't detect that the connection has been lost and try to reestablish the connection. I have to manually click on the WiFi hotspot to reestablish the connection. This appears to be the case both while the computer is running and when I first boot it up (i.e. when booting, if the first attempt at establishing a WiFi connection doesn't succeed, Network Manager doesn't retry or try another hotspot). Is this "normal" behavior for Network Manager? If not, does anyone know a fix? Here's some more info about my system:
Computer: Dell Inspiron 1318 laptop
WiFi Chip: Broadcomm BCM4238
Kernel Version: 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.x86_64

Most of the time my wireless works very well, connecting lightning-fast on boot with AC power. However here are two problems that I have noticed to-date: 1. Wireless will not connect if I boot on battery power. It won't connect even if I plug in the AC cable and do a reboot. Only solution is to reset the router (unplug power cable, wait, plug power cable). 2. Wireless will not connect after a Suspend, whether battery power or AC. Again, only solution is to reset the router. Another computer, running Windows XP, do not have connection problems (yes, wireless). It is quite strange, maybe some power management settings are interfering with networking? I have both laptop-mode-tools and pm-utils (re-rolled) installed.

I have this very weird problem: I'm not able to SSH to 1 specific server on the web. I can access everything, but not that specific server.
When I try to SSH, I get this code...
When I reboot to Windows, I can SSH using Cygwin. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid and OpenSSH client 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu6.
I tried sniffing the network with Wireshark, but I cannot understand why the TCP connection cannot be set up. I'm sure it's an Ubuntu problem as I'm able to connect to that server on the same machine, but different OS.

I have a nifty new headset (a JawBone iconthe noise cancellation is incredible) and I've successfully connected it to my Karmic laptop (64 bit, for the off chance it makes a difference). The trouble is, I only occasionally want to connect it to my laptop; I mostly use it with my mobile 'phone.
The two devices fight over my new toy a lot, and invariably the laptop wins, contrary to what I want. It seems a pain to have to rediscover the headset every time I want to use VIOP or whatever, so is there a way to add a device to Karmic's Bluetooth list, but not have it connect whenever it sees it?

just did a clean install and update to Maverick, and found that empathy won't connect without internet connection managed by networkmanager (I'm using wvdial to connect to the internet since networkmanager doesn't recognize my modem). it keeps saying 'Offline -- No Network Connection' unless I deactivate and reactivate the account. It's kinda annoying.
for Lucid, there is a simple fix for this condition, [URL]... but now, there is no entry for empathy in gconf-editor after I did the Maverick fresh install.
is there anybody have the same problem and know the solution? I can just install pidgin, but I think it is better to not having redundant apps installed.

I tried to implement the solution given at: [URL] on a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, running Ubuntu 11.04. However, I still can't connect to wifi.
I can see that the files were extracted inside /lib/firmware/ (I see a b43 and a b43 legacy folder).
The lspci -vnn | grep 14e4 returns:

I just upgraded to 15 and was wondering if it was possible to specify which devices to prioritize a route through. I have my machine, a laptop, connected to my family's router for an internet connection and a wired connection to a personal router for a faster and private connection between my other two computers and a network storage device. Whenever the laptop is connected to my personal router everything goes through it and it can't connect to any external web sites. But when I unplug it and go only on my family's wireless everything is fine, except I can't connect to the storage device since it has no external connections.

I have a ThinkPad x100e with a wireless card.Code:03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8172 (rev 10)my problem is that I can't connect to my wireless network with Gentoo. I've been running Slackware64-13.1 on this computer and now have Windows 7, Ubuntu and Gentoo installed. Slackware, Ubuntu as well as Windows 7 connect to the wlan without problems. I'm using the driver rtl8192se, the module is loaded r8192se_pci and is the same with Slackware and Ubuntu.
I've read many posts and found that other people experience problems with Realtek wlandevices as well. But I have no Idea how to get connected with Gentoo at my wlan. It looks like that the netbook is connected for a very short time, but when dhcpcd broadcasts for a lease the connection is already closed.

I am experiencing troubles when connecting to my new private network under Linux (works fine with Windows). I cannot get an ip address and the logs tell me a bit more, but I would like to know how to proceed to resolve this issue. My network adapter is an Intel Wifi Link 5100 using the iwlagn driver. Connecting to other WEP APs usually works flawless, it's the first time my system won't connect at all to this particular WEP encrypted access point.

I have installed an OpenVPN server on my OpenWrt 10.03 router [freshly flashed]:
[URL]
It seems "ok".
I connect my pc to the lan port of the router, and i want to try it out. I'm using Fedora 14 with GNOME. In the NetworkManager applet i set these things: this and this. Ok!. i try to connect, but it fails. Here are the logs: [URL]
one important thing: my routers [the one with the openvpn server] ip address is 192.168.1.2, and i didn't had to write it nowhere. so how could the networkmanager applet know the ip address of my openvpn server? i think this is the problem, but i just can't find where to write 192.168.1.2
p.s.: yes, i tried to google for: "No server certificate verification method has been enabled." but i didn't find a thing, and i'm trying for hours now... :
p.s.: if i [on the router]:
iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT
iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT
iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT

I've just upgraded my netbook from Jumping Jalopy, was it? to Karmic Karla 9.10 and I was obviously remiss in not taking note of the various sub-programs, libraries etc, that it was deleting. Now NetworkManager doesn't connect to my wi-fi whereas before it picked up immediately and was as solid as a rock thereafter. This version is apparently 0.7.996 although I cannot see this number on the Synaptic list. My wife's laptop is ok so the problem is on the netbook; I've checked "Edit Connections" and they're both the same.
So presumably the upgrade has removed something NetworkManager needed, but what? I've looked down Synaptic but there's just too much stuff there that I don't understand, likewise an attempt to trawl back through past threads on here. I'm barely computer literate, all assistance very gratefully received! How do I find out what dependencies it's lacking?

I have installed opensuse 11.3 I am unable to connect to my wireless connection.
KNetworkManager finds the connection (when i scan for connections), i can enter the WEP Hex key, it says it is configured. Goes through its "check list" when you click "ok", and all seems good. But it won't connect. When i run "nm-tool" i get:
