Ubuntu Networking :: Lost Network Between Laptop And PC?
Dec 2, 2010
My latop has suddenly lost it's ability to see my main computer. I have changed nothing other than updates and a few non-network related program installs. The laptop is an HP Pavillion DM3 running 10.10 and the PC is a Dell XPS400 running 10.04.01. I have both Samba and folder sharing in use. I have checked all the permissions etc on the shares and in Samba and everything is as it was and should be. So I am confused. How do I get it back and why did it go away?

I've been trying to understand how Linux creates the network/interfaces on a machine (been reading the Linux admin guide), but as I'm pretty new to this subject, I've got lost in the forest.
To provide with my goal:
1.) Learn about network setups on Linux
2.) Be able to maintain my own (virtual) network
3.) Configure my (virtual) network

My wife's laptop is Dell Inspiron 6400 running 11.04. Wireless has recently stopped working. Running
rfkill list all
shows dell-wifi hard blocked no soft blocked no.
The fn plus F2 keys toggle status between blocked no and blocked yes, but network manager still can't see network. I've tried removing the Broadcom STA driver - no joy.

I have an odd problem in that my wireless connection is okay until I close the laptop. When I open it back up, I'm unable to reconnect. This problem first occurred after upgrading to 9.10. I can reconnect after restarting. I tried several things before breaking down and reinstalling 9.04. After installing 9.04, everything works great. Any suggestions on what is going on before I try upgrading to 9.10 again? I have a Dell D600.

My first post. I lost all connections to the internet on my Linux Box Yesterday. I have checked my broadband connection and router. OK because I am using them to sent this from my laptop. I have 2 ethernet cards - no indication of a problem with either so I suspect for reasons unknown I have lost all my network settings. The Desktop User Guide says go to the Network Settings Window. I used to have a widget on the Menu Bar which enabled me to check the settings but for some reason it vanished a month or so ago and I can't find how to get it back.
PS In the meantime I am stuck with this crummy Microsoft box the interferes with everything I try to do.

I can't think of any obvious reason. I have two Ubuntu 10.04 machines. Each has a two disc RAID array for redundancy. Both are on my class C network (192.168.1.3 and 192.168.1.5). Both can access internet through router and I can "reach" each with a windows laptop (I can ping, login via SSH, reach webmin, SAMBA, etc). However, all the sudden, I cannot reach either linux box from the other linux box. It fails "both ways," meaning I can neither ping, login via SSH, use a SAMBA resource or in any way see the "other" linux box from one. This seemed to occur about two weeks ago (maybe after an update?). I've been using Unison to sync the RAID arrays - but not, I cannot sync at all. The only thing I could think of is to check hosts.deny (and allow) which are distribution default (unchanged)...
If I traceroute to the router, I get "1 XXXXX (192.168.1.1) 0.543 ms 1.217 ms 1.204 ms." However, if I try it to the other linux box, I get "3001.294 ms !H 2001.280 ms !H 3001.264 ms !H" which evidently means host unreachable. So it can get to the router (which has the windows box which can see both linux boxes). I just can't think of any reason why/how this could happen? Not sure how what is wrong with hosts file (I have made no changes and it accepts ping/ssh, etc from windows machine). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have had long term access to a networked HP Photosmart printer but now I get the following message:
Unable to open device hp:/net/Photosmart_C5100_series?ip=192.168.0.161.
when trying to access it.The ubuntu desktop is wired to the router as is the printer and another iMac wirelessly can still print to the HP. HPLIP status shows the icon for the printer but with a red x indicating no connection to it.The only recent network change was the removal of another router from our network. (service is DSL via a combo modem/router from service provider which previously was connected to a Dlink router which has now been removed from the chain b/c was redundant to the modem/router)

When there is a power failure at my university for about 30 minute, my computer stays up because of a UPS, but the switch it is connected to via ethernet is reset. After this, my machine loses network connectivity until I manually select the network using nm-applet.
In System -> Preferences -> Network Connections, the network has the "Connect automatically" box checked.
However, in /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, there is a line that says:
Code:
no-auto-default=00:30:48:b0:11:07,
and that is the MAC address of the ethernet card.
I'm running Ubuntu jaunty.

I have installed Lucid in a new laptop. Things are running OK except for the following problem:
I connect to the network/Internet using Wired ethernet (TCP/IP) with static IP. Everytime I reboot/restart my network configurations are lost and I have to re-configure. I have googled this problem and have seen a few posts/bugs in launchpad etc. for what appears to be the same issue...but unfortunately I am not getting a clear solution to this problem.
Just for clarity, I am using the following commands to re-configure my network everytime:
Also note that I have already tried editing the /etc/network/interfaces and the /etc/resolv.conf files. But it seems that these are not being picked or are being overridden.

I had some problems installing 10.04, which I'm not going into here unless I have to, but it appears to be up and running now except my PC can't access the network, even though it's wired. This is the first time I've tried putting on a new build by myself as my son always used to do it (my PC used to belong to him many years ago, and is old, like me.)

I'm running xubuntu 10.04 LTS (upgraded from 8.04 LTS) on an old low power sempron machine as an always on 'internet machine' i.e. it does all my downloading email etc. and up until yesterday it has always performed flawlessly. Yesterday wasn't its fault, it was a BTI network problem that took out my internet service but while talking to tech support I realized that this machine has lost all ways to control the network cards. Network-manager and network-manager-gnome are installed according to synaptic but they have no menu or notification appearance. I've tried reinstalling them to no avail.

I have suddenly lost the desktop icon (of a hard drive) for a mounted network share. It is funny because, I have other network mounts which share the same server, and there icons are appearing, and this particular share just does not show up with the icon, even if I try mounting it different locations in the filesystem. Any ideas. I really like those cute icons on my desktop.

I am currently trying to set up two network interfaces in my laptop. The wireless connection wlan0 works fine and it's the one that I use to connect the internet. It's in the range of 192.168.0.x/24 (gateway: 192.168.0.1). The wired interface eth0 is connect to another router (gateway: 10.0.0.13 with IPs in the range of 10.0.0.x/24. The router is set up to work as an AP and the 10.0.0.x network will only be used to control a robot, so no internet access will be required in this network. The problem is that when I have both connections up, I can't access the Internet anymore. I can still ping both routers, I can enter both routers configuration pages but I can't connect to the Internet. If I unplug the network cable, Internet gets accessible again.
I'm still a novice in linux and I can't figure out how to fix this. I don't want to get into static ip for the wireless connection since I'm constantly using the laptop in different places. The objective is to use the 10.0.0.x router to have a development platform for the robot that can be used anywhere without having to reconfigure the robot for a new network, which is a real pain.
In detail, the laptop connects via wireless to the network with intenet (192.168.0.x) and also connects via cable to another wireless router(10.0.0.x). The wireless connection of the second router is used to connect to the robot. Since I can ping both routers when they're both connected, I think it may be something related to the ip routes. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 with kernel 2.6.31-17-generic

I run Ubuntu 9.04 on a Toshiba NB205. I am suddenly having trouble connecting to the internet using my router or my cable modem for that matter. The weird thing is that I can:(1) connect to other networks just fine, and(2) my router/internet connection work fine when plugged into my desktop.I can't connect whether I'm plugged in with the ethernet cable directly from my modem or from my router, although both work fine when plugged into my desktop. Basically two green lights show up on networkmanager but it doesn't go from there to connecting. So the usual troubleshooting of moving the wires around and trying to connect like that just suggested that my laptop doesn't connect on the one router/internet connection that I happen to need.
sudo ifconfig
gives:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr xxxxxxxxx

My son has been using 9.10 and when he wanted to play on his XBox live, we just connected a ethernet cable to the Xbox and laptop then clicked on the wireless icon and clicked on wired connection and then he could play on his Xbox. But since upgrading to 10.04 this just will not work. We have tried with the XBox off and on, the wired connection connects but the XBox will not find the connection.

I would share my long awaited success with connecting my ubuntu laptop up to my universities (University of Western Sydney) wireless network. The rumors appeared true and they have finally implemented 802.11x authentication instead of that horrible java app netdirect. I am sure you've been cursing at its erratic stability. There is no linux documentation for airUWS-Lite nor anything more imformative than there windows/mac point and click steps found at [URL]. However with a few simple clicks you can have stable working connection.
When connecting make sure you have theses settings.
Security: WPA & WPA2 Enterprise
Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP)
#This is the settings that does not present itself correctly
Anonymous Identity: leave blank
PEAP Version: Automatic
Inner Authentication: MSCHAPv2
Username: <YOUR 8 DIGIT STUDENT NUMBER>
Password: your regular password

have Karmic Coala runing on an IBM thinkpad X.41. Works great. My home network is all ethernet so I have a router , CAT5 cable to laptop.A coupleof times I've had power outages The laptop carries on as it's on battery power. When the power comes back , the router restarts, it reconnects after a few minutes but the laptop doesn't reconnect to the network seamlessly. On some other Linux distro's I've had running /etc/init.d/network restart will refresh everything. On Ubuntu I have /etc/init.d/networks but running restart In the end I needed to reboot the laptop to get the network back on.Perhaps this is a power management issue with the laptop ethernet card i.e losing power powers down the card and it never comes back up properly.

I got a laptop with wireless. Next to it I got 2 desktops, neither of which have a wireless card and I don't have any usb wireless adapters or anything. I do however have an ethernet cord. In the past I was able to set my eth0 connection to be "shared to other computers", then from my laptop I could run the patch cable to the desktop and voila, internet to the desktops.
For some reason though, now whenever I try to connect from the desktops, there are 2 green circles and a little blue circley thing going around them. it spins for a while and then says disconnected. Also, now if (on my laptop) I connect to the wired network, my wireless stops working. I'm kind of stumped here, I tried deleting both connections from both computers, setting everything up again, and connecting, and I get the same problem. Also seeing as how I'm trying to troubleshoot this from my laptop and watch this thread, I can't exactly mess around with it much right now or I won't see any replies.

As you can see below my wireless connection seems valid computer-end and on my router's page it comes under the list of attached devices.Although this is all fine and dandy, I'm am unable to ping my router or any other computer on my network, I am also unable to ping my laptop from other computers on the network. Also by the looks of it I have having no trouble transmitting, but I am not receiving any packets.

This may be more suited for the networking forums, but I figured Community Cafe would be well rounded enough for someone to tell me if this is even possible (with minimal configuration that is). There are a few places I travel where I only have a wired connection to the Internet (no wifi), but when this happens is there a simple way to create an adhoc network so wireless devices can route through my computer and to the network? Reason I'm asking is I'm thinking of getting an iPad or iPod Touch which have wireless connections, but in the cases where my laptop is using a wired ethernet connection and the wireless card isn't used, I'd like to create an adhoc wireless network that'll let such wireless devices work.

I am able to view all the comps on the network except the laptop running vista. all the desktops are visible on the network and are able to print and share files on the network and also connect to the internet.the laptop running vista can connect to the internet but its not visible on the network and nor can it share files across the network or access the printer.all the systems have a static ip.

Since I installed fedora on my desktop (there is no other OS on my desktop computer at the moment) I can't connect to my laptop which has Windows XP installed on it, although I can normally connect to internet from both computers. Here is the drawing to illustrate how everything is connected:
On the picture you can see that the phone line goes to the ADSL modem. The ADSL modem is connected to the Wireless modem with LAN cable. Wireless modem is connected to my desktop computer with LAN cable, and trough the wireless connection to the laptop. Internet is working fine for both computers, but desktop can't see laptop and vice versa. What do I need to do in order to see the laptop?
