A fresh installation of ubuntu 9.10 stopped my DSL internet connection. sudo pppoeconf solved the problem of net, but NetworkManager applet in panel now not working. it says wired networks, device not managed.

- edit the default "auto eth0" network profile
- create/edit system wide network profiles (wired, wireless, mobile broadband)
The networkmanager itself can do it, of course, since long. The GNOME/XFCE counterpart also used to work flawlessly since long.
The auto connect feature of NetworkManager Applet (version 0.7.997) isn't working on my system. If the WiFi connection dies, Network Manager doesn't detect that the connection has been lost and try to reestablish the connection. I have to manually click on the WiFi hotspot to reestablish the connection. This appears to be the case both while the computer is running and when I first boot it up (i.e. when booting, if the first attempt at establishing a WiFi connection doesn't succeed, Network Manager doesn't retry or try another hotspot).Is this "normal" behavior for Network Manager? If not, does anyone know a fix? Here's some more info about my system:
Computer: Dell Inspiron 1318 laptop
WiFi Chip: Broadcomm BCM4238

i have some trouble connecting to the wireless of the dormitery where i live in. so that is what i already did: connecting to the hidden wireless network via nm-applet i typed in my personal user data using "sudo pppoeconf" connecting to the internet using "pon dsl-provider"
so after i did that everything was working out very well and i was able to use the internet without a problem! but after i restarted the computer the nm-applet was gone so i can't connect to the hidden wireless network anymore. if i try to start nm-applet manually the terminal says:

I have installed Suse 11.3 on my Dell 2110, and everything went fine (wireless network included). After a couple of weeks, while I was trying to access a wireless network, the wireless module ceased to work.Now on knetworkmanager the option to enable wireless network is grey and cannot be selected. Following some indications I found in this forum for a similar issue, I uninstalled the broadcom drivers and re-install them again, with a cold start between the two phases as suggested, without success. After that, the option on knetworkmanager is still grey, and from yast the wireless module appears as "not configured". If I switch to ifup and configure it, the situation does not change.
This is my current configuration:
Suse 11.3, kernel 2.6.34.7-0.3-desktop, 64 bit version.
KDE 4.4.4 "release 3"

After instalation of Suse 11.4, wifi worked totally correctly, until the first restart. Then it ceased to work. It looks like everything is working correctly until WPA authentication.

So the wlan interface authenticates, and then disauthenticates by local choice? a bit about the reason points to wpa_supplicant. Many peoples report that they have multiple copies running, and killing them solves a problem. Sadly I've only one copy, and after being killed it restarts.

As a preface, this is not an F7 carat mode problem.Firefox 3.6.8 in Lucid no longer is navigable with the keyboard.Up/Down arrows, PgUp/PgDown, Home/End, when the page is in focus, fail to scroll the window. TAB fails to switch between form fields on the page and in the toolbar (Example: Previously, CTRL-L to go to URL field then TAB into the search field would work. View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed squeeze and followed the instructions concerning b43-fwcutter and obtained firmware for my broadcom wlan interface. So my wlan worked for a while, but it just ceased functioning, for no obvious reason.

I was messing around with the alternate character panel app and made a custom character set. I then wanted to put it on a new panel and created a new panel. I moved the character set to that panel, and then started to mess around with the panel settings (auto hide, show hide buttons, and expand, to be specific.) So far so good, until I moved the panel from the right side of the screen to the top. I already had a panel here, and it seemed not to like hiding a panel when there was already one on the top.
When the new panel hid itself, all my panels stopped responding (any clicks on them did nothing) and my processor started going at 100%. I tried a reboot and the only thing that changed is that now I can't even see my panels. I'm guessing I need to change the settings back manually through the prompt, but I don't know how to do that. I am using 10.04 and have not upgraded gnome since upgrading to 10.04.
It has happened to my debian jessie system that the sound sometimes ceased to work, but after a quick review of alsamixer, pavucontrol it was easy to put everything back to normal. Not this time
The sound works as a charm with no headphones, but not with them, and I find them particularly useful for talking with people since the sound quality is way better...

I recently installed Suse 11.4 on my Dell Latitude 2110 netbook using the KDE live distribution, and, after that, the Broadcom wireless ceased to work. To enable the wireless connection, I have to press Fn + F6. If I do it now, the wireless led indicator turns on for a couple of seconds, then turns off again. I just upgraded (as a fresh install) to Fedora 13. In so doing I kept the old /home partition. My NetwokrManager Applet is missing from the top bar. But if I login instead as a different user, then it is there. When I did the install, I had to create a (new) user as part of the process. The old passwd file had two users, one called admin, and the other myself. I logged in initially as the new user, and created the admin user keeping the same home directory, user ID and group ID. I then logged out, logged in again as admin, and removed the new user. I then added myself as a user keeping the same home directory, and user and group IDs.. For some reason admin has the applet but I don't. I also don't see how to add it except as a custom laucher using nm-applet, and that didn't seem to work.

I looked in the package manager and apparently I don't have the gnome applet for networkmanager...but everything else I seem to have (the git version not svc or w/e) Anyone know if installing the applet will let me choose my wireless network and connect to it? Right now I think so, but what I have to do is boot into windows, find the package on the web and download it, then boot into fedora and install it
where I can find the fedora 10 networkmanager-gnome package (git version for x86_64)? I looked around and found the svc version and a git version for i386, but my OS is x86_64 and I couldn't find any git versions of it for 64-bit fedora's. btw, I have no idea what git and svc mean, but when I tried to install the svc version, it told me I had to install svc versions for all the other networkmanager packages...
Is there a way of wireless networking without using the Gnome NetworkManager Applet? I want to connect to the Internet using a USB 3G modem and connect to wifi without knowing all of the details of every network.Network manager is pretty good but there seems to be no way of using it without starting an X session and it doesn't play nice with any other networking tool and reminds me too much of a Microsoft application.

However, when I try and setup gdm to do autologon I get the NetworkManager applet asking for the password for the gnome-keyring to get the wireless details. Since I want to use this machine as a sever this is unacceptable as I won't be around to type in the password. I tried the solution at [URL] but this does not work. I still get the password being requested and the keyring password is the same as the logon password. Can anyone say if there is a workaround that works to get the NetworkManager to be able to read the gnome keyring without having to prompt me for it.

sudo shutdown -h from terminal
I can shutdown using powerbutton on case. I can't use the applet indicator powerbutton in root account, but, I can use the command under "System-->-Shutdown" in root account, but I don't see "System-->-Shutdown" in users account. Is there a way to add it ? I installed Debian 6.0 Squeeze on my Acer Aspire 3620 Laptop it works just fine and has the same Gnome Desktop. The only thing different is that there is no powerbutton available thru Gnome applets, only the command on menu under" Sytem-->-Shutdown", which I'm fine with on this machine.

I read the bug reports it stated that on live-cd there was only suspend and hibernate. There is no shutdown or reboot. I tried: "#start acpi", it closed with errors. It said that Ubuntu uses upstart. Is there a script which you can add to power button to add the shutdown.? Really I don't necessarily need powerbutton, I think the work around would be adding the command to "System-->-Menu.
I just loaded Suse 11.3 on my laptop. I can't get my wireless network to work. I tried via Yast and then switched back to Network Manager but nothing works.NM says that it is running, however I have no way to access it. No icon and I don't know where it is located or how to add to desktop panel.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Linux for the first time and I'm having some internet connection issues. I am running Linux Mint 9 on my HP 210 netbook. I am unable to connect to anything using NetworkManager 0.8's automatic configuration. I can't even ping my other computer. Both computers are connected to my cable modem by a switch. The other computer (the one I'm on right now) is running Windows Vista and is working fine.
eth0 is getting an IPv6 address assigned to it, but no IPv4 address. When I do dhclient (I'll include it at the bottom) it says no DHCPOFFERS received and then makes another adapter called eth0:avahi with an IP of 169.254.9.78, which I think I understand from what I read is just a default.
I noticed when I looked at the ipconfig results from my Windows computer that there were a number of things called tunnels on there. My ISP is cox, and I saw some other people with cox had the same setup. One of the tunnels seems to make it so IPv4 and 6 can coexist. Could that be a problem? When I asked Cox why it was set up that way they helpfully referred me to wikipedia.

I have such an annoying problem that I really don't know how to fix! Basically for some reason the nm-applet icon just doesn't sit in the panel anymore, but it's floating on the desktop as a normal application. Restarting/reinstalling it doesn't solve the problem, it's still out of the panel. With any theme I use. It's a pretty fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 on a MacBook Pro, so there are no particular customizations. The only workaround I found is installing wicd, but I'm really not familiar with it and want to get rid of it.

The icon has this small "x" and when mouseover it says "No network conncection". Moreover when left clicking it, it says
"Wired Network Device not managed"
While I was looking for the solution a came across this post by an Ubuntu developer who says:network-manager-applet displays the connectivity state of network-manager's managed interfaces not every interface. So the title "network manager says disconnected but is connected and working" is actually misleading. The interface is connected and working but not from network-manager's point of view since it is not managing the interface. Additionally, in Lucid now network-manager applet displays nothing now for non-managed interfaces so is less misleading. You can check to see whether or not an interface is managed by network-manager by using the command line too nm-tool. You'll see "State: unmanaged" for unmanaged interfaces.

in Gnome, every applet has an ugly handle to its left, some themes have it more ugly than others.Where can I find an option to disable the handles? in the theme rc file? if so, where exactly?
