Ubuntu Networking :: Giving Internet To Other Computers Without Router?

May 5, 2011

If I have a desktop with a USB wifi adapter connected to the internet through an ethernet cable, is it possible to create a wireless network using the adapter that will allow other users to connect to the internet through mine? I'm in a fairly low-tech place for the next few weeks and getting a router isn't likely.

If it's possible, anyone have links or instructions for how to do it?

Ubuntu Networking :: CAN Connect To Other Computers But Not Router Or Internet - 10.04

Jan 3, 2011

- CAN connect to other computers - ssh and vnc over the home network (via D-link 524 router).
- CAN get an IP address via DHCP
- CANNOT get internet connections - including router at 192.168.0.1
- CANNOT even ping router (but I get an IP address - weird)
- Other computers on the network CAN access internet
- Live CD could not access internet

results of ifconfig

Code:

Code:

I am wondering if his ISP could be doing this - he has received a warning letter about bitorrent. Could the isolate a single computer behind a NAT router?

This is the results from dmesg:

Code:

I have tried:

- to set proxy settings as "Direct internet connection"
- disconnecting power to (including 30 sec wait): modem, router, computer + unplugging ethernet from computer
- Live CD (he only had an old one 7.10) which also didn't connect to internet, but as I am remote, I couldn't do any more. We are downloading a 10.04.1 iso for him to burn tomorrow, and will try that again.
- Uninstalled Crashplan which was the last software that we installed (and it was working ok).

I am currently ssh'ing into another computer on the network that IS working, and then ssh'ing into my Dad's computer - including a VNC session (tunneled through both machines and router).

Ubuntu Networking :: TP-Link Router Not Giving 150 Mbps?

Mar 31, 2010

Details:

1. Using XP Pro SP3 (32-bit)
2. Laptop = Sony VAIO VGN-FZ140E
3. Recently purchased a TP-Link Router (TL-WR740N) which claims to give 150 Mbps speed

When connected, my Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN shows a speed of only 65 Mbps . A friend came over with his laptop (having Windows 7) and was able to get 150 Mbps speed. I even compared and the same web sites were opening with considerable difference on our laptops. Do I need to upgrade the driver?

Networking :: Building System Router - Can't Access Computers On Other Side Of Network / Fix It?

May 20, 2009

I have built a linux router with a pc having two network cards. I am running ubuntu 8.10.

I have enabled forwarding on the router. One network (192.168.1.0/24)is connected to eth0 and another (192.168.2.0/24) is connected to eth1.

The interfaces have addresses 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1.

On any side side of the network, I can ping both interfaces on the router.

However when I ping a machine on the other side of the network, I get 100% packet loss.

I have not touched iptables on the router or any machines.

What I am doing wrong?

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Got Extremely Slow On Both Computers?

Mar 10, 2011

I have an old HP pavilion laptop (2005) that was useless.I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on it and it became a working computer again. It was excellent, snappy, it was as if I had bought a lower end modern laptop.Internet was working great.I did not have any complaints (in fact, I thought that a modern computer running Ubuntu would beat my so adored macbook, speed wise). For some time I had 2 efficient computer, a macbook and the hp with the Ubuntu OS. So on the last weekend of February, my internet got extremely slow on both computers. After that annoying weekend (February 28) the internet on my mac was good again, however, the internet on my linux continued to be messed up.I tried disabling IPv6 on my machine and on firefox, tried the openDNS, the MTU stuff, but nothing.I even formatted my disk and installed ubuntu again (all this using the installation CD).However, apparently the installation CD uses some of your existing configurations (for example, the layout of the close, minimize, maximize:menu buttons on the corner of windows did not go back to default). So I'm guessing whatever was messed up with the computer didn't change back to default or the previous configuration when I first installed ubuntu. To give you an idea of how slow the internet is, installing alien (terminal installation),I got low speeds of around 150B/s (no typo here, it was bites, not kilo bites) and the fastest around 5,000B/s. The fastest I got was downloading chrome at 6kB/s but that didn't last even a minute. So given that these transfer rates are obtained both on firefox and the terminal, I'm assuming it is not a browsing problem.

A thick headed solution, would probably be to install windows again to get the network configuration to "standard" and then install Ubuntu formatting the disk again (using the CD).I'm using ethernet,so,thinking it might be cable problems, I did try to use the cable that was on my mac on the machine with linux. No success there.

Fedora Networking :: Share Internet Connection With Other Computers On LAN ?

May 28, 2010

Trying to share my internet connection with other computers on my LAN. I've tried doing this with Debian, Ubuntu & Fedora so far...

My Intended Setup is as follows;

The Problem: So far I've not been able to get an internet connection from any computer connected to the HUB. I currenty have Fedora 13 on PC1 but have also tried with both Ubuntu 10.04 & Debian Lenny. I am open to using any Linux based distro on PC1 as long it has a Gnome Desktop. eth0 on PC1 can be Static or Dhcp, but I would prefer to set Static IPs on eth1 & all of the Client PCs

To the best of my knowledge I have enabled ipv4 forwarding in sysctl.conf (& some other changes);

Code:

All changes I made to the Firewall (all other Firewall settings are still at default, no custom rules added yet);

Router is set up to assign dhcp from 192.168.xxx.100 & 192.168.xxx.200

At the moment I have only 1 PC attached to the HUB. It's Ubuntu 10.04 (PC2)
It's details are;
ip 192.168.xxx.103
netmask255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.xxx.101

Thus Far I can't ping 192.168.XXX.103 from PC1 & I can't ping 192.168.XXX.101 from PC2. (unreachable) I have an internet connection on PC1 (of course)

Debian :: Block A Router From Giving Me A Dhcp Address

I get assigned an IP from the university's server. Every now and then, a student will plug in his router to the network trying to get wifi in his/her room.

And by doing so will start assigning IPs on the network, while rendering useless the university dhcp server, which has to cope with a higher number of pc's.

How can I specify to dhclient (or the linux system in general) NOT TO obtain IP addresses given by a specific mac address ?

Ubuntu Networking :: Connected To Router But No Internet?

Feb 21, 2010

just installed Ubuntu Netbook remix on my acer aspire one, and come across a problem Ive never faced before. Im able to Connect to my router (and access it through the internal ip address) but as soon as i try access anything outside of my network there is nothing!

This i found odd as first i thought it might have just been my Routers problem, but seeing as all my other computers were connected to it with no problems (wired and wireless) I quickly traced the problem back to the laptop.

After this i decided to see if after a simple update would fix the problem. so i connected it up through the Ethernet port once again it connects to the router but no internet! I have tried everything in my knowledge, but with no success!

Ubuntu Networking :: Router Not Working/ Can't Get To Internet?

Apr 29, 2010

I am trying to set up a basic router. I am running ubuntu server 10.04(just installed it today!) I have a verizon aircard(mobile broadband card) that is connected via usb. I am using wvdial to "dial-up" the connection. This works just fine and gives me a device on ppp0. There is a single lan connection on eth0 set up as a static ip address under /etc/network/interfaces. I don't even have any firewall running yet. For whatever reason, I can only get out on the internet when eth0 is set to get its ip address through dhcp. When I set it up with a static ip, I get for example:

$ping 4.2.2.2
From 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable.
$ping google.com
ping: unknown host google.com

If, however, after I have booted and the wvdial has been started, I set up eth0 as dhcp, run /etc/init.d/networking restart, set it back as static, run /etc/init.d/networking restart again, all work well. When I reboot the system with the static ip on eth0, and connect to wvdial, I get no internet again.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04, Internet Not Working Through Router

Aug 20, 2010

My internet works fine if I plug directly into the modem, but if I go through the router either using ethernet or wireless it doesn't work. I can access the router perfectly when using wireless and change settings and all that but cant access the internet. From what I've read it isn't a DNS issue because I cant get a result from pinging an ip, so I think it may be something firewall related but I'm unsure.

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet - Router Disconnecting ?

My router is a Netgear router with Comcast, and after going on Ubuntu for a couple hours just doing normal things, the Internet disconnects. Then I have to restart my computer and start everything over again. I check the router and everything seems to be fine, I even unplug everything on the router first (like I am instructed to do so if this sort of thing happens) to make sure that's not what is causing the problem. It has to be the Ubuntu system.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Use The Internet With Linksys Router

Feb 25, 2011

I am dual booting XP and Ubuntu 10.10 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6410 and I have a Linksys WRT120N router connected to my Modem.

So the weird thing is, under XP I can use the internet while connected to my router. Under Ubuntu I can't use the internet while connected to my router. But I can use the internet in Ubuntu if I connect to my neighbor's router called "linksys". So something happens when I connect to my router that makes Ubuntu not able to access the internet. But if I'm connected to my Neighbors router or if I use XP while connected to my router I can use the internet.

I have been using Ubuntu for about a year, so I'm getting better but still a noob. I've tried to figure out what's going on by looking at other forums and posts and trying to see if anyone has solved this. So far I've had no luck. This is also the first of many problem I have encountered that I have been unable to solve using online posts, and is the first problem that I have had to resorted to creating a post to try and fix.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connected To Router But No Internet

Sep 1, 2011

I'm running a Natty machine wired to a TP-Link router (TL-WR841N) with additional Ubuntu and Windows machine on WiFi. Recently I've had some problems with connectivity on the Natty machine. Connectivity is fine as far as the router, but not beyond it. This applies to all browsers, Software Center, Aptitude and anything else you can think of. Now, normally at this point I would call my ISP, but the thing is, all other machines have connectivity. I've checked the cables twice and anyway, if it were them, I wouldn't be able to ping the router. Router has ping functionality to outside and it's working, have tried ubuntu.com and google.com. Also, connectivity between the wired and wireless machines is fine, pings are flying across the network beautifully.

That Linksys router is bridged to an AT&T router. The bridging is working fine. The AT&T router's page shows the IP of the Linux box and lists it as a device. The Linksys page shows no errors with packet transmission and receipt. I can ping the Linux box from any client on the AT&T router, and can ping the AT&T clients from the Linux boxI had set the IP of the Linux box to192.168.1.201 while configuring that router, as I had set that router to 192.168.1.200 and it just seemed orderly. The network preferences show eth0 being set to auto dhcp, but the IP is still set to .201 so I don't know that it actually released or renewed.
