Ubuntu Networking :: How To Different Users See Different Files
Jan 13, 2010
Let's say I have a directory called dir1. In it, I have these files: A1, A2, A3 belong to user "userA", files B1 and B2 belong to "userB". Both users are in group "groupNO", but the files are in group "groupYES".What I want is this: if someone tries to mount the folder by NFS (or could it be done withSamba?), as userA, they can only see (or read) files A1, A2, A3,as userB, they can only see (or read) files B1 and B2,as a user in groupYES, they can see and open all the files. This is just the principle. If I need to sort them into directories or use another program on the server-side, that's fine with me. I just want the user to just have to mount the folder over the LAN with a user name and password. I'm fairly sure I can do it by SFTP, but, again, I want the client to be able to MOUNT the folder on their local machine over the LAN no to user a special client. Is that possible? Do I need LDAP? (From what I understand, LDAP is separate from the OS-level mounting process, which is not what I want.)

When I have different people log into our ftp and browse to the same folder, some people see the files inside, some don't. all the user accounts are in the same group, which has permission to this folder. but the one user who can see the files is the owner. how can i fix it so everyone in that group who's the owner of the folder can see the files?

Samba up and running on my pc. pc runs FC12 with kde. A laptop has win vista. The pc can access the shares on the laptop but the laptop has authentication issues to access the pc. Note that windows doesnt enforce authentication forincoming network connections.Using the system-config-samba util i tried to map a windows user to the unix user "feduser". The laptop (named LAPPY) has a user (lapuser) which has on windows no password. What should I tell samba config what the windows username should be? lapuser or LAPPYlapuser doesnt work because when accessing the pc via the laptop, the authentication fails. The only auth that is successful is when choosing the same winusername as the unix username.
Secondary, id like to setup the laptop so that the user doesnt have to provide a name and password, or at least not more then once in the lifetime of the laptop. Note that you cant provide an empty password to system-config-samba. How is that possible?
Strange but not really on issue imho:the samba - KDE control module(kcmshall4) (and the smb.conf) shows 2 shares: the homedirs and the data dir the samba server configurator (system-config-samba) shows only the datadir.

I read the log
Code:
I found this print out:
Code:
The line in bold is the security issue. There is only 1 user account on the system. There should only be 1 user logged in, not 2 users logged in. The remainder of the log file lists 1 user logged in, for similar log output. 2 users logged in does not appear again in the log file.
Does the second line of bold indicate that an attempt was made to log in to the system using SSH?
There was an internet connection interruption (no service) around the time of the log file event. The service did return, later.
Does that line indicate that an unauthorized user logged in to the system?

I want to have a shared area for movies, music, etc. where files are available for all users. What is the best way to do this? I've tried a few different things, (ie. creating a folder and sharing it among a group, but for some reason it doesn't seem to work the way I want it to. I'm now thinking maybe have a partition like /share and set the permissions to all in fstab, but I'm not sure.

There's something I would like to do. It's simple, it MUST be possible. I can't find any way to do it by Googling it. I'm must be looking for it in a wrong way.Let's say I have a directory called dir1. In it, I have these files: A1, A2, A3 belong to user "userA", files B1 and B2 belong to "userB". I occasionally have friends using my home computer. They just use my account. There are some files that I want to hide/protect from people using my computer. It's not that I need highly secure encryption, it's more like I want to make sure people don't accidentally see my porn collection if they borrow my computer to check their email. Is there a way to set up a folder such that it's required to enter a password (e.g. the admin password) to see it's content? Probably I could change the owner of the folder, so that I can't access it without password? How do you protect/hide your secret or intimate files?

I have a server setup with all my web development stuff in /var/www and in several sub-folders within that. (each project having it's own folder)It works great with one FTP account. But recently I've been getting help on a projects from a buddy of mine that freelances, and have made him an FTP user account as well. All is fine, except for when he tries to edit a file and gets a permissions error.
Here's the issue, I don't want us to have the same FTP login, but all the files are currently owned by my user name. So, when he logs in to edit a file, he can't because I'm the owner, and the files are set to 744. Will I cause any harm by adding both users to the same group (www-data) and chmod'ing the files to 775 so that we can both access and modify the files?

It seems that AppArmor can't be effectively used to protect read access to files from users (including roots). It is possible to create a profile for, eg, 'cat', but then the users can use 'less'.Is this true? Should use SELinux instead for this?

I just realized that I can access other users files and they can access my files simply by using the console to navigate the file system, Its not that big a deal, I am the only one using the computer but this seems like something is not configured correctly. Should each user be able to look at and modify each others files by default? (On Xubuntu 10)

I've got a NAS running and I'd like to somehow make some of the folders and files invisible to certain users only. For example, if I 'ls' a directory, I want to see files 'a', 'b', and 'c'. But if another user does 'ls' in the same directory, I only want them to be able to see 'a' listed.I know I can use 'chmod +700' to make certain files not able to be read/written, but the filename would still appear in a 'ls'.I know I can put certain files inside of a '.hidden' file in the folder, but then it would be hiEdit : I'd also like to mention that the users that connect to the NAS could be coming from Windows or Mac operating systems. So hopefully the solution would work for users from those systems also..

I installed proftpd on my Ubuntu 10.10 install. I also run multiple websites that I want to allow ftp access to for 2 different users. The websites are located in /home/www/. This is where the guide I was following told me to put them. I also don't have a user named www.How can I give write permission to upload, delete, and edit all the files in /home/www/ for multiple users? They can connect to the ftp server and see the file, just not change them.

I would like to see when installing ubuntu a choice for users to choose what they want installed on their system or not. I know for a fact that there are some like myself that does not want mono runtime files or mono apps on their linux box and when we try to uninstall all the files or apps that link with mono ends up breaking the linux box.
My question is why can't ubuntu make a distro of ubuntu that offers to users the files and apps for use with mono and a choice for those users to install ubuntu with out the mono files or apps. There are somne of us that think mono is as bad as .net and some of us want a linux box that runs linux and not window files or apps unless they can be written as pure linux code and not C# crap. I feel that C or C++ is the real way to write linux code and anything written in C# is windows and always will be windows. If they want to put more windows stuff on ubuntu, then they shouldn't be calling it linux..

Code: #!/bin/bash
user_belongs() {
if `groups $var1 | grep $var2`

how the file is generated or what it contains is not important at this point. The important question is how to prevent the file from being downloaded and its contents from being displayed in the browser window?Since it is not recognized by the web browser so it is downloaded on the system. That way, what the script does is exposed to the outside world.Okay, I usually keep such scripts in../cgi-bin/. But for files (text files, in the example) which are being uploaded by a user should not be downloaded by another user.

I'm trying to setup a Samba share for our work. I have it almost complete, however I can't successfully share editable files between users. The issue I'm having is that say User1 create a file test.txt, because of the 755 permissions, then User2, who has "writable" rights as per the smb.conf file, cannot edit that test.txt file.
Whevener I create a file with a user, its locked by that user. Is there a way I can set it that every folder/file a user creates is 777 ? I firgured that there's still security because of the "Valid users = " field in the smb.conf file.

I have a vsftp server running, and we have problems sporadically where people (not the person who uploaded the file) cannot delete files uploaded from OSX machines. We never have this problem with files uploaded by PCs. Anyone ever heard of this or know what I should check? The users uploading the files all belong to the same group. Also, I think if you log in to the FTP server with another OSX machine, it will let you delete them. I'm looking at the folders now, they have drwxrwxr-x. When i try to delete them from a PC, it gives me a 550 Remove directory operation failed.

I'm trying adjust my proftpd server's settings, that anonymous users could download what they need smoothly.
A small problem made me so bemused:
In the configuration file of proftpd, I place the following setting section in the <anonymous> section,
Code:
After restarting the proftpd server and applying the configuration, I try downloading a file in IE browser. Sometimes, it prompts a saveas dialog, and everything was okay.
However, it occasionally prompts a login form instead of a SaveAs dialog. This makes our customers confused greatly.
So, how could I prevent browser from prompting login form when anonymous users try to download files from our ftp server?

OS: CentOS 5.3

I have a site hosted with a cheap hosting company and limited control of the site. I need to allow some other users all over the world to have write access to files or complete directories and I have no idea how to do that. Initially I thought I could use "chown" somehow but it looks like it's a no-go with ftp and others. By default, there is a .htaccess file and a .htpasswd file in the root directory of the site and the hosting company suggested to use .htaccess file with something like below:
[Code]....
and put it in a .htaccess file in the directory of user1 but the server does not like something since I inserted that file. Is it an error in the script or is there more to it than that? Can someone point me to a suitable tutorial or explain what to do?

CentOS 5.4 install, likewise open standard install (For active directory authentication).I have a license service which requires a license.txt be in the users home directory. The group owner for license.txt must be the same as the license service. Whenever a new domain user logs in, it creates the all the appropriate files but the group owner for license.txt is the users domain group. My current workaround seems like more effort than it's worth, is there another way to get this process solved easier/more secure?
- copy the license.txt into /etc/skel
- created a script to check for the presence of license.txt, check it's permissions and change them if necessary
- gave the domain's group sudo [nopasswd] access to the script (the script is not writable)
- execute the script in /etc/bashrc

If I want to add Windows & Mac users as Samba users, must I first add them all as Ubuntu users? If so, since none of the other users will actually be working on the Ubuntu Server, how do I disable the other non-admin users on the Ubuntu Server login screen.
