Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Make A Distro Of That Offers To Users The Files And Apps For Use With Mono?
Mar 11, 2011
I would like to see when installing ubuntu a choice for users to choose what they want installed on their system or not. I know for a fact that there are some like myself that does not want mono runtime files or mono apps on their linux box and when we try to uninstall all the files or apps that link with mono ends up breaking the linux box.
My question is why can't ubuntu make a distro of ubuntu that offers to users the files and apps for use with mono and a choice for those users to install ubuntu with out the mono files or apps. There are somne of us that think mono is as bad as .net and some of us want a linux box that runs linux and not window files or apps unless they can be written as pure linux code and not C# crap. I feel that C or C++ is the real way to write linux code and anything written in C# is windows and always will be windows. If they want to put more windows stuff on ubuntu, then they shouldn't be calling it linux..

I'm going to set up an Ubuntu computer for my family. They asked for it, I didn't push them. But I know that they don't like passwords.
So my plan is to make an admin account which is in the sudoers group and then make induvidual accounts for the users. But I also want them to be able to install apps.
So I wonder if it is possible to set the computer so that they can use the software center. What is the best method to do this? The apps mustn't be installed system-wide.

I've got a NAS running and I'd like to somehow make some of the folders and files invisible to certain users only. For example, if I 'ls' a directory, I want to see files 'a', 'b', and 'c'. But if another user does 'ls' in the same directory, I only want them to be able to see 'a' listed.I know I can use 'chmod +700' to make certain files not able to be read/written, but the filename would still appear in a 'ls'.I know I can put certain files inside of a '.hidden' file in the folder, but then it would be hiEdit : I'd also like to mention that the users that connect to the NAS could be coming from Windows or Mac operating systems. So hopefully the solution would work for users from those systems also..

bash-3.1# file receive48.wav
receive48.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, stereo 48000 Hz bash-3.1# This file, I intend to make it mono. That is, to mix both channels. I know this is a piece of cake for sox. But exactly how do I do it?

So, I have compiled a C# program on Linux using MonoDevelop. When I try to execute the resulting binary, my system tries and fails to run it as a windows executable, with wine. Wine gives me the following message:
$ ~/bin/MyMonoApp
wine: Install the Windows version of Mono to run .NET executables
~/bin/MyMonoApp: command not found
I can only convince it to run by explicitly calling mono:
$ mono ~/bin/MyMonoApp
So, how can I make this the default, so I don't have to explicitly call mono every time?

I would like to know if anyone has run more than one version of mono concurrently. I want to host a Battlefield 2 server with bf2ccd that requires mono 1.1.12. CentOS 5.3 repos provide mono 1.2.4 which is neither new enough nor old enough to support bf2ccd. I have considered compiling a newer version or an older version to accommodate this but I think that the only fully supported version is the 1.1.12 and I want to have the newer mono for other projects. I have used Slackware exclusively up to now and am not familiar with CentOS yet so I would like to avoid compiling if I can. The server is an unmanaged dedicated server so I'm not certain of all of the details. AFAIK it is a standard CentOS 5.3 install.

After a disastrous attempt to upgrade Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 (system would not boot), I partitioned the disk in two and installed 9.10 on the new partition.
The old data was still available so I copied my old home directory on top of my new one thus:
I have managed to re-install all my software, but a few problems remain.
Here is one of them:
In spite on marking (with Palimpsest Disk Utility) the old partition (with 8.04/8.10 on it) as not bootable, at boot time I get offered three versions of Ubuntu 8.10 as well as 9.10 and the corresponding recovery mode boots etc. Any idea how to get rid of these options without formatting the partition?

Recently I did a wget for DreamLinux 4beta6.3, which I now cannot burn to a disk. Another issue with linux in general being just a hobby. Why could a dev not set it up where you could just wget the upgrades for the main distro files themselves ?? We already do this when upgrading the apps, so why not the distro? Why could you not start at alpha, and just slap do a rolling upgrade into rc and beyond?
I understand the potential stability issues, but why can't we ghost the drive and hence have a backup on hand and then do this as outlined, and hence do a single install from alpha the distro's grave? I am wasting four months on "Setting Up" each install, only to wind up reinstalling again. This happens in every variation I have come across. Even in stable versions, the rolling upgrade just craps the install, and the major do overs hijacks all my data.

I built the Debian system on my laptop from a Net install CD and installed the packages that I wanted.
Now it has come time that I need to build a new desktop computer (CPU's locking up on me after 6 years) and I would like to be able to turn my laptop Debian system into a Distro that I can load on the Desktop.
Is there a program to turn my laptop OS install into a installable distro, or do I need to do this by hand?

I think that the logical conclusion of the greater self-reliance of Linux users is wanting to make one's own distro entirely. Using that Linux From Scratch distro, probably--at least if you're not a programmer. (I am guessing that if one knows the right programming languages, one doesn't even need LFS.) In an ideal world where we had the time and will for this, most or all of us would make our own distros. I'm interested, but it's much more work than I'm willing to do. Am I right?

I would like to take say, CentOS5, customize it to my needs, then make an installer ISO for it.Basically I'd like it to be a next next next install, and it has everything already in it like sshfs, basic config files, and other custom stuff preconfigured. I tend to do all these things manually every time I install, and I'd like to just automate it all, and also not have to depend on an internet connection each time. How would How would I go about doing that? I don't want to just take a disk image, since then I'm restricted to that platform. I still want it to be a true installer.

I'm using Hardy Heron. I'd like to keep using it. I mean forever.
I have several old PCs, and in the past few years I've installed 8.04 several times. Every time I install, it downloads about 184 updates... a slow process.
I would like to put all the .deb files on a CD (or flash drive) so that future installs won't need to download these updates.
Question 1: How do I get a newly installed version of Hardy Heron to recognize that there are files on the CD, and so use them rather than downloading the files. I think that maybe just copying the files to /var/cache/apt/archive might work.
Question 2: I once loved version 7 of Ubuntu like I love 8.04 now. But when I try to install it, it won't update anything anymore and it seems unable to find any additional software for version 7. Now I've abandoned version 7, but is there a way to download hundreds of deb files for Hardy Heron, save them to a CD, to ensure that I can continue to use Hardy Heron in say, the year 2012, and have access to all of its non-standard packages, and still be able to install other packages which are located on CD?

I am trying to install a program named "Ntrip" with wine, running Linux Mint 10 64bit (based on Ubuntu 10.04) I installed the software without problems, when I try to start it I get the following error:
Code:
fixme:actctx:parse_manifest_buffer root element is L"asmv1:assembly", not <assembly>
wine: Install the Windows version of Mono to run .NET executables
As far as I know, mono is by default on every Ubuntu 10.04 installation, however as per the error message, I installed the Windows version of Mono via Wine successfully. Trying to start the program again, still coming up with above error.

Just for the fun and learning experience I am working on a minimal install with Squeeze +IceWM. The goal is to make a livecd with a set of privacy apps - like Iceweasel with Tor/privoxy and some encryption tools. Everything is working out just fine, but I thought it would be very nice to have an installer. I read about the refractainstaller and refractasnapshot in this post, and thought they sound like a good solution: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=54635#p315738 However, the links seem to be dead and so were all the mirrors I tried. Does anyone know where these files can be found or any other easy way I can make Debian installable from a livecd?
