I am running Ubuntu 10.4 I am coming from a windows background and I want to know what is the proper way to share files among multiple users on the same Linux box. In this particular case, I will be sharing jpg images.
I do not have any shares defined and I am not (to my knowledge) running Samba.
I'm setting up a Linux machine thet'll be shared by several users, some of whom will be admins. Is there a way to restrict access to a user's home folder (encrypt or block completely) for other regular/admin users?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI dual boot into Arch Linux and OS X 10.6 on my MacBook pro. I synced my UID between both OSes and created an HFS partition (with no journaling) to use as a shared home/Users partition. For the most part it works just as I'd expect, but sometimes when I'm booted into OS X certain files are "locked" (when I get info on a particular file the "Locked" box is checked under the "General" pane. I can resolve the issue by manually unchecking the box) and/or I get "Operation not permitted" when I try deleting or chmod'ing a file. In both cases I don't see anything out of the ordinary on the permission bits displayed with ls -l, except for a trailing '@' character in the position where the sticky bit would normally occur:
This '@' character shows up on ALL normal files, so doesn't seem to be linked to the locked/operation not permission situation.
On the Linux side of things I never have permission problems. To the best of my limited knowledge and experience with ACLs I've not found any ACLs on any of the files in question.
For what it's worth, I do most of my file editing using emacs (Aquamacs in OSX), is it possible it is setting weird permission bits?
What is the "locked" setting that OS X uses and does it have a permission bit equivalent (so at the very least I could recursively unlock all files in my home directory from the terminal) why might some, but not other files get "locked" when booting into OS X what is the meaning of the '@' character?
Somehow, I have flipped a bit somehwere, and some directories, particularly those shred through SAMBA, have flipped their sorting.
where those things are configured?
I also want to hide .dot files for some shared directory trees.

Where all human users have r/w permission for all files and sub-directories under this path. Can I achieve this buy just setting the permissions correctly or do I need to do something else?
I'm using a Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 32-bit machine as my file server. It is sharing a few folders stored on a USB NTFS drive using Netatalk. The client machine is running MacOS 10.6.4. I have only one user on the Ubuntu machine, but the Mac machine has two users. I wish to share the same network share between the two Mac users, while both are logged in (they switch between one another without logging the other one out).
I created a login item on both Mac user accounts to automount the Ubuntu shared folder and used the same Ubuntu user account for authentication on both Mac accounts. This is the problem: When the first Mac user logs in, the shared folder automatically mounts with no problems. However, when the second user switches to their account (without logging out the first user) the automount mounts the folder with a red "No Access" sign on the folder. The only way to resolve it is to eject the mount and manually remount.
This is not the end of the world, but I would like to resolve this issue if possible, so that the users get a smoother experience. The way I tried to resolve this: I thought that maybe Netatalk does not allow the same user to connect more than once from the same IP, so I set up an additional user on the Ubuntu machine. when I connect to the Ubuntu server using the new user for authentication, the only share available for the user is their home folder. The other shares are not available.
I therefore tried to configure permissions using the AppleVolumes.default by explicitly giving all users the "allow" permission for all shares and restarting the Netatalk service, however the new user still has access to nothing but their home folder. How can I share the same shared folder between multiple users?
Is possible to make a folder permission like below?
-User can create files/folders in the shared folder.
-But the files/folders they created, cannot be delete/change by em.
(only can be delete by root users)
-Each new files/folders created will auto owner to root only.
I recently installed vsftpd on my server. I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy LaserJet is connected to an old desktop machine that has it shared. The configuration on that desktop is correct, since I have been printing through it from other Windows machines for a long time (and it still works now).
I recently started dual-booting Ubuntu 10.10 on my otherwise Windows laptop, and I've gotten everything basically working how I like it, except that I can't get connected to that printer.
The Vista machine is at IP address 192.168.0.103, and the printer is shared as LaserJet. It's set up with workgroup MSHOME.
When I go to add a printer in Ubuntu, I click the Browse button under "SMB Printer," and I see the MSHOME workgroup, but when I try to expand it, there's nothing inside.
If I try to type in the address directly (smb://192.168.0.103/LaserJet), the Verify button tells me "Print Share Inaccessible, Connection timed out." Note that I can ping 192.168.0.103 fine. I can continue through the rest of the wizard, but I obviously can't print anything out after I finish the setup, since the connection is failing for some reason.
There is no username or password required to see the shared printer.
Any idea what could be going on here? I'm kind of at wit's end here, and I'd love to be able to ditch Windows--with the obvious exception of Starcraft II, of course
Been using Ubuntu now almost 1 year and love it but I'm still mostly lost so I need someone to explain in great detail how to be able to access the My Documents folder on my LAN XP machine. I've been up and working fine for 6 or 8 months but all of the sudden (maybe it was an update package?) I get the following error message, after a long delay, when trying to access the shared folder:
Could not open location 'smb://office/my%20documents/'Failed to mount Windows share.I have set an icon on the top panel mapped to the XP machine and launched by launcher.
I configured Samba so that this laptop running Maverick would show up on the network so I could share files between the two. When I view the network on the laptop the windows shares show up, and I can access them; but when I view the network on Windows is when the problems start.
I view the network in Windows and this laptop shows up, but every time I try to open the Public folder (only folder shared) it won't let me in. I get some sort of Windows error message about being unable to access the folder and how I might not have permission to access it, and then at the very bottom it says something like 'file path not found'.
I tried to change the permissions in the properties for my public folder but I every time I tried to change the settings in the access box it would reset it back to blank (-) immediately after I changed it.
I'm not sure what the issue could be. Prior to purchasing this new laptop I was running Karmic on my old laptop and the networking between the two machines worked flawlessly. I'm hoping someone on the forum can help me with this problem.
i have installed nfs server on my redhat machine.when i want to mount shared data from client(suse)machine the following error occur. "mount.nfs: mount to NFS server '10.3.31.146:/home/usbtest' failed: System Error: No route to host" both machines ping each other successfully.

When I go to map network drive on my XP machine, I can see the computer, but not the shared folder. After some googling I found that i have to create my Windows user name ont he Linux machine as a user as well. Unforunately, that user is 'Administrator'. So I told Linux to force user, and it created it, and did smbpasswd command and added the user to the samba list. Still nothing.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am trying to share folders between my laptop and desktop. The desktop runs Ubuntu 10 ,and the laptop I'm dual-booting between pclinux OS and another OS. I can't see either machine from either machine. The desktop shows a "windows network" when I go to the network location in file manager. When I run PC Linux, I can't even see the desktop which runs Linux as well, and I've tried to configure shares in the PC Linux OS Control Center, but I obviously failed. I installed gshare on the Ubuntu machine, and PC Linux has GUI tools(whew!) to configure NFS, SMB, and Deb-whatever the other one's name is. As a new convert, I've went into properties,permissions, because it's what I'm familiar with. I just wish someone would tell me if I should maybe just go back to the other OS or not, as I've had so many problems every since trying the switch. I really like this system, but it seems as if you need to be some kind of computer programmer or something to be able to do the most basic things (install software,wireless,share files). I'm not a stupid person, and what I lack in knowledge, I compensate for in desire to learn.

I have been trying to SCP a couple files from my Ubuntu 10.10 machine to a Fedora 12 machine. Before today, did it with out any problems, always worked. Today however; after the SCP is complete from my machine, the file on the other machine is zero bytes, an empty file. The only thing I can remember getting changed was the new kernel that was in the update I did today. But I don't think that would have changed the SCP works.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a machine running Ubuntu 9.10 that has an external HD with shared folders music folder and media downloads folder). I have set up SAMBA on that machine.
On my laptop I am running a dual boot system with Windows Vista and using wubi install, Ubuntu 9.10.
In Windows, I am able to wirelessly connect to the shared folder and access the music folder and the media downloads folder on my Desktop Ubuntu machine. All is good.
When I boot in Ubuntu, I am unable to connect to the shared folder under Places > Network I can negotiate to the MSHOME (the name of my work group). Once selected I get the error Failed to retrieve Shared List from server error message.
I have ubuntu server as a guest in virtualbox and xubuntu as my host os. I have a shared folder on my host that can be accessed by my network. I'm trying to use my server without the need to install a desktop, so how would i transfer a file from my host machine to my ubuntu server guest?

From a Solaris unix box, I get the message "Local: Bad packet length 1349676916."
From a SuSE Linux box, I get the message "Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer"
From a mac box, I get the message "Connection closed by 'IP address'"
I can ssh out to another server just fine. I don't know what to even do.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a vsftp server running, and we have problems sporadically where people (not the person who uploaded the file) cannot delete files uploaded from OSX machines. We never have this problem with files uploaded by PCs. Anyone ever heard of this or know what I should check? The users uploading the files all belong to the same group. Also, I think if you log in to the FTP server with another OSX machine, it will let you delete them. I'm looking at the folders now, they have drwxrwxr-x. When i try to delete them from a PC, it gives me a 550 Remove directory operation failed.
