I want to have a shared area for movies, music, etc. where files are available for all users. What is the best way to do this? I've tried a few different things, (ie. creating a folder and sharing it among a group, but for some reason it doesn't seem to work the way I want it to. I'm now thinking maybe have a partition like /share and set the permissions to all in fstab, but I'm not sure.

This seems like somewhat of a n00b question, but I'm kind of stumped and working on a half a dozen other things at the moment, so I thought I'd go ahead and ask it.
Is there a "correct" way to set up a shared folder between two local users using only EXT4 that will allow both users read & write access to everything in the folder?
Here's my scenario: My wife and I use the same computer. I want two separate user accounts (mine and hers), but I want ~/Music to point to the same location for both users so that I don't have to duplicate all of the files.
Too protect the innocent, I'll use Jack and Jill.
So say Jack downloads or rips an album:
"/home/jack/Music/Radiohead/Ok Computer"
I want Jill to be able to able to create a folder:
"/home/jill/Music/Radiohead/Hail To The Theif"
I know the basics of symlinks so I can get /home/jack/Music and /home/jill/Music to point to the same place. I also have Jack & Jill in the same group.
The problem I'm having with my test setup is when Jack creates "/home/jack/Radiohead", it is set up to where Jill can read, but not write. So she can play songs from Ok Computer, but if she wants to download Kid A, she has to go in and manually change the permissions on Radiohead first.
Also, while I might set up multiple directories this way, what I DON'T want is for Jack to be able to modify /home/jill/otherdir where otherdir is just a regular directory set up with default permissions.
Oh, and as an added bonus, it would be nice to set up another account (i.e. a "guest") with limited permissions that can read, but not write/modify.
I would like to configure my system to do the following. Previous versions of ubuntu did some of this but now I cant seem to get this working.
1.Browse other Ubuntu systems on the local network by default. Avahi is install on my systems but they cant see each other.
2.From the GDM screen log into another PC. I had this set up in the past so from my laptop I could log into my server almost like terminal services. How do I set this up again?
3.Share files on the local network easily. How do share file with other pc on the network if I don�t want to use samba? What happen to NFS in Ubuntu?
I'm trying to setup a Samba share for our work. I have it almost complete, however I can't successfully share editable files between users. The issue I'm having is that say User1 create a file test.txt, because of the 755 permissions, then User2, who has "writable" rights as per the smb.conf file, cannot edit that test.txt file.
Whevener I create a file with a user, its locked by that user. Is there a way I can set it that every folder/file a user creates is 777 ? I firgured that there's still security because of the "Valid users = " field in the smb.conf file.
Every time I try to empty the waste bin I get dolphin error - 'The file or folder /.local/share/Trash/files/IMGP1676.DNG does not exist'I tried to recreate the file 'IMGP1676.DNG' , deleted it i.e. sent i to the waste bin and then tried the empty waste bin again, although this time it was there and deleted it still reported the same error.du -h .local/share/Trash/files/ 12K .local/share/Trash/files

Sometimes when internet goes down and any mail send then it bounced back immediately saying domain not found. Can u please tell me how i configure to hold all mails in postfix server rather than bounce when internet fails and will pass through when restored the internet around 15-30 minutes?

So far i have been able to serve/display index.html files from the users home directory [url] but so far i cant upload files to any user home directory, every time i try to upload a file with filezilla i get this error message: 553 Could not create file. Critical file transfer error

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell PowerEdge 1650 server with 3 NICs in it. I am trying to use one NIC (eth0) to connect to the internet, the second NIC (eth1) to share the internet connection to a LAN, and the third NIC (eth2) to connect to the LAN.
It is running Ubuntu server 8.10
The problem that I'm having is that NetworkManager (version 0.7.0) keeps setting eth2 as the default connection, and then I don't get any internet at all from the server.
My main goal is to be able to share files from the server to computers on the LAN. The secondary goal is to have a virtual machine hosting a Halo server, connected through eth2, so that it can host LAN games. But that is a secondary goal after I get the connections to work.
I've been looking around and finding other people who have done bits and pieces of this, but not the whole thing. I had been hoping to simply use the NetworkManger, but I don't mind editing config files.
Also I can't seem to find any good instructions on editing the /etc/network/interfaces file. The man file is incomplete, and everything seems to point back to the man file.
One of Konqueror's unique features is that i can name a local process as the action in a form. When i submit that form, the local process is executed. Very helpful for certain offline tasks. What would make it even better is if i could find a way to pass some data to that local process from the html page. This could be the content of a hidden input item, etc. Alternatively, if there is a way for Konqueror to create or update a local file with data from the html page, that would acheive the same end.

However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.

I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed alongside Windows Home premium 7 on a Compaq CQ5110f with 2 dual processors, 320 GB HDD, 4 gb Ram, less than a year old/ It is giving me some error messages. It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.
I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?
So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?
Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?
I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. 1. root user
2. other local users
3. LDAP users
I want to setup following 2 usecases:
a)
1. Allow keybased ssh and scp to root users
2. Allow ssh but disallow scp service to other local users
3. Disallow ssh and scp to LDAP users
b)
1. Allow keybased ssh and scp to root users
2. Disallow both ssh and scp to other local users
3. Disallow ssh but allow scp to LDAP users
For the 1. in both cases, I think PermitRootLogin in sshd_config could . For the 3. I am thinking of deploying rssh to control scp service access, since ssh will be restricted anyways.
Problem area is 2. primarily.
i) How to allow ssh but disallow scp to 'other local users'
ii) How to disallow both ssh and scp to 'other local users'
When I have different people log into our ftp and browse to the same folder, some people see the files inside, some don't. all the user accounts are in the same group, which has permission to this folder. but the one user who can see the files is the owner. how can i fix it so everyone in that group who's the owner of the folder can see the files?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) on a Dell Precision 670 desktop that I share with another user. The OS is installed on a 160GB disk, which also has the /home folders. There is also a second internal disk (1TB) which has shared files (music, pictures, etc).
How can I configure Ubuntu such that either person can read or write to this shared disk? Right now, if someone is logged into the PC, the disk can be mounted, but then it is not available to the other person.
I want to share one folder to all users in specific domain(such as from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.255),folder name as /tmp with readable and writeable in samba

Is there any command or application that can do this? I dont mind if it is a terminal command either, but I would really like to know a way that I could see other users on my network.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an RHEL 5.3 system where NIS logins are working perfectly, but authentication doesn't seem to be working for non-root local users. I can't login either remotely or at the console with a local user, and I can't even su to them unless I'm doing so from root (i.e. when no password is required).
I've reset the password, I've deleted and recreated the user, and nothing. nsswitch.conf does have "files" listed as part of the config, which was really the main place I'd have assumed the issue could be. su gives "incorrect password", and ssh gives "userauth failure". /var/log/secure shows "su: pam_listfile(su:auth): Refused user <username> for service su", and same for the ssh attempts (with ssh in for su, of course). I've reviewed my pam.d files, and they seem to be the same as on a working machine, but I'm not 100% conversant with pam so I might be missing something.
I have a computer that's booting Ubuntu 9.10 from the first of 4 drives. The other 3 drives are formatted as NTFS. Is it possible for my 9.10 to share the NTFS drives to the network so my other network users can access my NTFS drives while I'm booted to 9.10?
