Ubuntu Networking :: HP Dv7 Wireless Quit Working Spontaneously
Feb 17, 2010
I just did a fresh install of 9.10 about 4 or 5 days ago on my HP dv7 computer. I have a Broadcom 4322 wireless card. I had some initial trouble getting my wireless to work, but I was able to find and install the Broadcom STA wireless driver necessary for the wireless card to work, and since then it was rough skating, but at least it was skating, until about half an hour ago.
Everything was working fine until my battery died unexpectedly and the computer shut down. When I restarted it I was not able to reconnect to wireless, and although I have the Broadcom driver installed, it says "This driver activated but not currently in use." I have a touch panel to turn on my wireless which is supposed to turn blue when I touch it to signal that the wireless is on, but no matter how hard I try, the touch panel wireless button stays orange. It does not seem to be able to recognize that my wireless card exists.

Courtesy of Peacedog I managed to get my usb wireless-n adapter to work in Ubuntu 10.04. Unfortunately, Windows managed to hose the hard drive while I was configuring it so I had reformat and reinstall both WinXP and U10. The USB wireless-n works perfectly under WinXP but nothing happen under U10. The icon in the Panel shows spinning arrows indicating there's a connection but I can't actually get out. Here are the outputs requested from the previous go around.

I installed 10.10 on my 2nd laptop with the SAME internal wireless card as my other laptop, but Ubuntu all of a sudden acts like I have no wireless card? When I click on the network icon in the panel, Wireless Connections is enabled, but Ubuntu shows no available wireless networks? I can switch to my other laptop and it works fine.

I just upgraded to 10.04, as of this upgrade, samba has quit working.
From Windows I can ping the linux box (192.168.1.110) If from Windows I key in ->Start->Run->\192.168.1.110 I connect to my linux box.
If I try to access the linux box through the name, (\tardis) I get network path not found.
Everything worked fine before the upgrade, now I cannot see my linux box via its network name. I have a WD TV Live on my network and I must be able to see the linux box via its network name or I cannot connect to it.
iptables shows no rules
smbtree returns

I've had my wireless networking (on an Acer Aspire laptop) working perfectly well for at least six months. Now, quite suddenly, after a reboot I get the message from wicd, "No wireless networks found". I probably was running a week or so before that without needing a reboot. Windows wireless is fine (I'm using it to send this post). In addition, my sound stopped working and I see a fleeting message to the effect that the sound system is reverting from analog to digital.I'm running Kubuntu 9.10. My guess is that something in a recent round of updates knocked me out of the box. How can I proceed to set things aright?

For what it is worth 2 hard drives have Kubuntu 8.04 and the 3rd has Mandriva Spring 2008. Tuesday was the last time I had used Pidgin and everything was fine. Wednesday when I booted the computer I noticed that the Pidgin icon in the sys tray looks broken. I click on it and it shows "Pidgin is available" "connecting" and that's it. The buddy list is empty. Went to my other Kubuntu hard drive, same thing, went to my Mandriva hard drive same thing. Installed Kopete on this hard drive and it shows no one available.
I did a search here before posting and found nothing.

I have no idea why but my keyboard suddenly stopped working in X when I started my computer this morning! The keyboard still works fine in the command line mode, though, so I can do stuff as long as it does not involve a GUI. (NetworkManager only works in X).

I have a problem with Xorg, I am not sure if the black screen is related, but sometimes when I am just using the computer, with heavy processor and memory, but sometimes not, but the title bars to the programs disappear, my compiz effects quit working, and the cairo dock becomes unusable, so I cannot switch windows, but I can close them using 'File > Close" to access the windows under the ones on top, and to fix it I have to switch over to a terminal "Ctrl + Alt + F2" and log into that to kill Xorg by "sudo top" and killing it with the PID.
And the Blanking Screen, I am just doing usual programming with Bluefish, Eclipse and the terminal, and the screen will just go black, and won't come on if I wiggle the mouse, press a key on the keyboard or turn it off and back on, the status light on the monitor stays green, and doesn't go to orange as if it were unplugged or the computer went idle, so I know that it is still communicating with the monitor, but the way I fix this is I have to manually power down the machine via the power button and turn it back on and it works normally for a while.

I just installed some updates, one of which might have been
kdebase-3.5.4-20.el5.centos.i386.rpm.
Before I installed the updates, switching to a VT console using ALT+CTRL+Fn (n=1..6) worked, but after installing the updates it quit working within a KDE session. It does still work from the login screen (so it's not an X problem, or a /etc/inittab problem). After logging into a KDE session, I can get to a VT console if I first use ALT+CTRL+F12
Here's the keyboard section from xorg.conf:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "kbd"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
EndSection
There is no option DontVTSwitch line. I have the same problem on another computer. That one is more of a problem because its keyboard doesn't have an F12 key. What to do?

Two days ago, the down arrow cursor key quit working on my usb keyboard. I could go up, or left and right, but not down. I figured the key was broke and pulled out a PS/2 keyboard and plugged it in. Problem seemed to be solved. This morning, the down arrow cursor key again was not working. I thought that was a weird coincidence, so I plugged in the old usb keyboard, and the down arrow cursor key was again working!

I want to switch my laptop from XP to Ubuntu, but right now, i cant risk installing it. i dont want to have it partitioned so i can dual boot, so for now i only run the try-it-out mode. Before i consider installing though, i want to see if i can get everything to work ahead of time, that way im not regreting instalation. I have a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, with 55GB hard drive and 516MB ram. So far, the trial mode is working great, but the wireless will not work. Ive tried to install the driver, but i am unable to do so. I have looked this up, and i have tried many things, and so far, none have worked.I was wondering if it was just part of the trial thing or not, but it is a Broadcom Wireless BCM4318 driver

When originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.
Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.
I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.

I have just installed openSuse 11.4 KDE 64-bit on a Dell M1330. When I click on my networking panel, it says WLAN interface is unavailable. I've followed the steps in the stickied post and found the WLAN hardware info, a screenshot of which is below:Uploaded with ImageShack.usNext it says to do this - you need to look at the logs, in particular the info in /var/log/boot.msg. To see this, you need YaST => Miscellaneous => System Logs and select boot.msg.In YaST there is no such option for system logs under miscellaneous, so I can't do that. The results of the sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist scan command produce the following:
root's password:
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.
eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

Just upgraded to the newest version of Ubuntu(unity), and my wireless isn't working. I have the 14e4:4315 Wireless Card so I followed this posts [URL].... And still have no wifi, when I click the icon in the menu bar it says under "Wireless Networks": "wireless is disabled by hardware switch", which ins't true because on my Vostro 1520, there is only one switch and it is in the on position. I've tried 3 versions of ubuntu and none of them work with wifi getting tired of it.

Here's the thing: When I work in Xfce session or in Xubuntu session (10.10 on Acer Aspire One) the whole DE switches from Xfce to Gnome. I see it not only on the change of the desktop wallpaper, but on application menu, context menu etc. It changes from my Xfce setup, which I know and love, to Gnome and then back in some 1 to 3 second interval. It switches back and forth untill it finally stays on Gnome. I love Gnome, but would like to have working Xfce on this machine.
I googled for similar problems and possible solutions before posting here, but wasn't successful.

I've been running Ubuntu on my PC for a while. I liked it so much that I decided to see if I could give new life to my old Sawtooth G4. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 using the alternative installer and everything seemed to be going fine. However, and without warning, the video cut off. I restarted only to have the same thing happen repeatedly.
what's causing this problem and how I can resolve it? I'm not sure if this helps, but my G4 has been modified. It has a ATI Radeon 9200 video card. It also has a 1.2 Ghz processor.

In the wake of a spate of posts complaining that wireless is not working in 10.04 here is mine. I'm on a (relatively old) AMD Duron 1.5Ghz, 1.5G memory with a VIA KM-266 motherboard. Wireless worked fine in 9.10. With a fresh install of the new 10.04, the usb wireless adapter is not detected, the tab to add a new wireless connection is grayed out, starting the KNetworkManager (did I got the name right?) does nothing (that is, no application starts), etc.note: if you are wondering how I am accessing the internet, I just fired up the 9.10 live CD, which as you can imagine is not the most practical thing in the world. Here is the info. The commands lsusb and lspci spit the following:
Code:

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.4.2. The wireless worked perfectly in 9.04, but did not not work at all in 9.10, and now 10.4.2. I installed ubuntu 10.04 in my laptop hp 620 and wired connection is working but wireless is not working at all. I checked the old posts and when I enter the command "iwconfig" it shows the following:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 RT2860 Wireless ESSID:"" Nickname:"RT2860STA"
Mode: Auto Frequency=2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
Bit Rate:1 Mb/s
RTS thrff Fragment thrff
Link Quality=10/100 Signal level:0 dBm Noise level:-87 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
I read in the older posts that the "Access Point: Not-Associated" should be "Access Point: Invalid" and the command that is used for this purpose is " sudo iwconfig wlan0 ap auto"
and it did work-but for sometime, and again it showed me "not associated" when I restarted.

I just got a fresh Ubuntu 10.04 install on a system, added Lubuntu (the poor thing's 10 years old), and added a second user and gave him sudo/admin rights via the Users and Groups app. All was working fine, but now the initial user can't make any system changes. The initial user can still execute sudo and gksudo, but not much else.
In the Network Connections applet, the initial user can't edit the "Auto eth0" connection, the "Edit" and "Delete" buttons are just greyed out.
In User and Groups, I can click "Advanced Settings" or "Change" on another user, but nothing will happen. If I click "Add User" as the initial user, it will give the "Not authorized" popup.
I had a second user that I'd given adminstrator/sudo access to. So to change the network settings I logged in as this user for the first time, and was able to change some things. However, after a reboot I had the same problems with this new account.
I haven't done anything with this install besides install openssh-server, add some firewall rules with ufw, and add the Lubuntu desktop. Most of my google results turned up basic stuff like corrupted sudoers file (mine is still in pristine, default condition), and not being part of the admin group (which both users still are). The behavior also persists regardless of whether I use gnome or Lubuntu for my session.
