my isp is putting a max bandwidth in my area and I need to monitor my downloads and uploads per month. Is there anything that has a gui that is easy to set up and just shows the amount of data downloaded and uploaded per month. Also if possible to do a pop up if you set a maximum bandwidth amount.

This tool will run on a linux router through which all my internal PCs are connected to the Internet. This means the tool(s) need to work with NAT (traffic being forwarded and not necessarily destined for the interfaced being monitored).
The distribution being run doesn't have a package manager so any packages or dependencies have to be manually compiled and SCPed over file by file. For this reason, the tool/tools need to be simple (things like vnstat, not things like ntop that have their own web interface).
I know that vnstat can tell me the first bullet point so it's only there incase there's a tool out there that can do everything. If there's a tool that can only do the second or third bullet point, that's great too - I'll just keep using vnstat and look for something else to do the other task.
I use Firefox 3.5.9 and Ubuntu 9.10.
There is a suspicious amount of data (more than a megabyte) being uploaded from my computer whenever I log onto a commercial web site on which I advertise rental properties.
Is there any way I can see the data being uploaded - I am pretty familiar with the Unix/Linux system and commands.

Using Ubuntu server 10.04.2 64-bit all up to date.
I am running multi-threaded processes. These use OpenMP in my own code and the multi-threaded ACML maths library. When run in the foreground, everything is fine i.e. if I have set
export OMP_NUM_THREADS=8
then when I start all 8 cores are in use and things whizz along. However, when running overnight and logged out using e.g. 'at now + 1 minute' then the command, I am only getting about 130% CPU and it slows down accordingly. I have tried renice'ing and calling from within a bash script in case sh is doing something odd but nothing seems to solve it. I am sure that in the recent past this wasn't the case.
The libraries being used are shared versions in case that might have any bearing.
I have a desklet that, occasionally after toying with network stuff, will tell me that large amounts of data are being sent/received. What's a good way to determine what processes are occupying these resources?!

I have tried to back up some material to Ubuntu One. I went through the sequence Nautilus -> right click -> Synchronise this folder. The computer was working for some time, and now the folder's symbol has a green and blue arrow on it. Yet, when I log on to my Ubuntu One account, I see only the folders, but not the files. Also, the quote counter shows that I use 0% of the alloted 2 GB. (The folder is something like 200 MB on my computer.) My question is if I miss a step here. Is there something else that I should do in order to back up the content of a directory? I don't want to move everything to the Ubuntu One folder on my computer.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just got lost. I have set up a server with two nics. eth0 for the lan and eth1 for the Internet. I have dhcp running on the server. I am using adsl and have run pppoeconf to set up my connection. I have turned off dhcp and nat on the router so the device works as a modem using bridge mode.The problem I have is that the server keeps hanging when loading pppoe or at least when pppoe has completed getting the public DNS addresses.What happens is that the Internet connection can be opened from the /network/interfaces file. This seems to work but it does not return control to the server - the process runs, the DNS addresses obtained but the rest of the processes following at start up never load (i.e. power on the server and the processes that load then).
So I thought that this must be in the wrong place. I commented out the items in the interface file and added a couple of entries to end of rc.local, my logic being that this will load after everything has finished. Nearly right but not. What happens is that all processes run and then the pppoe program runs and the DNS addresses obtained (seen from a screen connected to the server). But the system then stops. What should happen is that it continues to load and at the end return the login prompt.From a client I can see that dhcp has loaded since a private IP has been allocated but I cannot login from that client since the server has not finished loading.I am not sure what I have not done here since reading round I can see that what I have followed is the same as everyone else but I get a different result.
Anyone know why each time I boot up the machine the cube background image goes away and the background colour is left. This image i am placing is in Apparency/Skydome
View 2 Replies View RelatedI registered here and got Ubuntu a couple days ago. After setting up and connecting to my wireless LAN I went on the internet and uploaded the WINE source. However, after about 5-10 seconds of staying on the internet it all of a sudden stopped working (the internet stopped its connectivity) that is. And I was still connected to the wireless LAN. I tried to reconnect like most people would do, and I was not able to connect again (Would prompt me for password continuously to no avail). There isn't a problem on my windows 7 (I'm able to connect to LAN/internet).

I was wondering if anyone might know of good reference material, books websites etc., that discuss network security issues in layman terms. I would like to set up a dedicated Linux box as a firewall and would like to have a deeper understanding of the different types of configurations that are possible. I run a dual boot system and most of the firewalls I have used on the Windows side are very confusing to me. A lot of the time they give you a pop up that informs you that some cryptically named program is trying to access the network or the internet and wants to know if I want it to or not, 99% of the time I have not idea if it is a legitimate program or not. I realize that this is probably a separate issue (knowing how to identify programs and processes that should have access from those that should not) from setting up a firewall and basic network security but I know that they are related.

It writes some few Bytes to the DB and there is no error, but it's not the actual file that is being written.
I'm having a very strange problem. I use lampp on centOS linux. My application has a upload Script (in PHP) which uploads file to file system. after upload and moving file to correct location, uploaded files are getting deleted. I check file upload and moving of file by putting all the status in a text log file. files are getting uploaded properly and after upload I'm able to move the files to it's correct location.

The download speed is very good (~50mbps) but the upload speed spikes at about 10-20mbps for the first few KB and then it's nonexistent (0-1kbps). This only affects file transfers or otherwise bandwidth consuming processes. Normal web browsing or ssh is not affected. After running a speedtest of my internet connection which is routed through the AP I could upload to the internet with 1mbps which is my inet connection maximum so apparently this is not affected. Tried the same file transfers with netcat to eliminate any other factors and had the same problem. dmesg and hostapd debug did not report anything unusual

I have bob as the directory's owner, and he is able to upload his files to that folder via ftp (vsftpd on the server). When a browser tries to access the pages, it simply gets a 403 forbidden. The problem occurs when apache2 tries to access the files bob uploads. The www-data user (Apache daemon) gets permission denied when I try to cat bob's files in the shell, so it's purely a permissions issue. What I can't figure out is how to give the Apache daemon the ability to read bob's files while also making certain it does not have the ability to modify any of them.

I have a vsftp server running, and we have problems sporadically where people (not the person who uploaded the file) cannot delete files uploaded from OSX machines. We never have this problem with files uploaded by PCs. Anyone ever heard of this or know what I should check? The users uploading the files all belong to the same group. Also, I think if you log in to the FTP server with another OSX machine, it will let you delete them. I'm looking at the folders now, they have drwxrwxr-x. When i try to delete them from a PC, it gives me a 550 Remove directory operation failed.
