Ubuntu Security :: Encrypt Files Uploaded To Dropbox Account?

Nov 30, 2010

It says on the dropbox site that files are stored encrypted on their servers-but can anyone vouch for this?

Is there something in the repos i can use to encrypt the files before i upload them to dropbox? Annoying that truecrypt cant do this...

Ubuntu Security :: Encrypt Files Using The Keys - Generate ?

Sep 8, 2010

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. I love the passwords and keys application, but was somewhat surprised at the lack of a context menu in gnome to encrypt a file.

In general, I cannot find how to encrypt files using the keys I generate. Maybe I'm missing something? Probably, I just thought since Ubuntu comes with OOB key generation it would have OOB encryption capabilities.

I've read about seahorse and other ways to ADD encryption, I'm just wondering if ubuntu does it natively. It'd be a good idea to add to brainstorms, right click and encrypt.

I'm trying to setup vi to automatically encrypt/decrypt .pgp and .asc files. The encryption part works. If I "vi testfile.gpg" it will auto encrypt it on save.

However when I try and vi the encrypted file it does not prompt me for my pass phrase. I just get this:

Here's what I have in my ~/.vimrc file.

This is on gentoo linux if it makes any difference.

Networking :: Create An Account And Use It To Encrypt Traffic And Change IP?

Oct 28, 2010

First post on this forum and feel a bit bad for asking a question but would really appreciate it if you guys helped out. I have been using Linux for a while now and it has become my main OS and I'm looking to purchase a VPS or Dedicated server to play around with as im starting a computer science course soon. I was wondering if anybody in this forum would guide me to any guides on setting up a VPN on the dedicated/VPS server so that I can create an account and use it to encrypt my traffic and change my IP, I have looked around for a while and have only found info on connecting to another computer through VPN to use there network and applications but I don't think that is the type of VPN I'm looking for.

Ubuntu One :: Files Are Not Uploaded To U1?

Dec 11, 2010

I have tried to back up some material to Ubuntu One. I went through the sequence Nautilus -> right click -> Synchronise this folder. The computer was working for some time, and now the folder's symbol has a green and blue arrow on it. Yet, when I log on to my Ubuntu One account, I see only the folders, but not the files. Also, the quote counter shows that I use 0% of the alloted 2 GB. (The folder is something like 200 MB on my computer.) My question is if I miss a step here. Is there something else that I should do in order to back up the content of a directory? I don't want to move everything to the Ubuntu One folder on my computer.

Debian Configuration :: Apache - Permission Denied On Files Uploaded Ftp?

Apr 12, 2011

I have an apache installation with /var/www/bob as the document root and the only site served up. I have bob as the directory's owner, and he is able to upload his files to that folder via ftp (vsftpd on the server). When a browser tries to access the pages, it simply gets a 403 forbidden. The problem occurs when apache2 tries to access the files bob uploads. The www-data user (Apache daemon) gets permission denied when I try to cat bob's files in the shell, so it's purely a permissions issue. What I can't figure out is how to give the Apache daemon the ability to read bob's files while also making certain it does not have the ability to modify any of them.

General :: Files Uploaded By OSX Machines To Vsftp Server Can't Be Deleted By Other Users?

Feb 21, 2011

I have a vsftp server running, and we have problems sporadically where people (not the person who uploaded the file) cannot delete files uploaded from OSX machines. We never have this problem with files uploaded by PCs. Anyone ever heard of this or know what I should check? The users uploading the files all belong to the same group. Also, I think if you log in to the FTP server with another OSX machine, it will let you delete them. I'm looking at the folders now, they have drwxrwxr-x. When i try to delete them from a PC, it gives me a 550 Remove directory operation failed.

Ubuntu Security :: Encrypted Home Folder And DropBox

Mar 9, 2010

I just installed 9.10 on my laptop and selected the option for home folder encryption. I am running DropBox and placed the DropBox folder on my desktop (meaning it should be encrypted when I am logged out.) So I have two questions:
1) Shouldn't this setup cause my DropBox files on the server to be encrypted? Apparently they are not because they appear as unencrypted text using the DropBox Web interface.
2) If they were encrypted on the server (which doesn't appear to be the case right now), how would it be possible to share them with another client unless the encryption on both clients were set up identically?

Ubuntu Security :: Backup And Encrypt Using GPG

Jan 20, 2010

I'm currently writing a simple script which uses luckyBackup to backup my /home directory to /tmp. I then want to tar it, encrypt it with gpg and move it onto a usb stick. My question is that suppose my hard disk died and I needed to restore from this USB backup, would I still be able to decrypt the file given that I would have lost gpg keys etc when the disk died? (I would still know the passphrase though). Should I be backing up gpg files separately?

Ubuntu Security :: Encrypt A USB Stick Partition?

Oct 28, 2010

I'm trying to think of the best way to encrypt a partition on my flash drive.

I plan on storing ssh/pgp keys on it for use on different computers (including school computers, where I won't have administrative access).

TrueCrypt is going to require admin access to decrypt and mount the partition, I think, so that's out.

Are there any other methods you all would recommend?

Ubuntu Security :: Encrypt With Right Click Safe?

Jul 13, 2011

I just found a neat way to encrypt a file in Ubuntu 10.04.

I right click on a file and select the Encrypt option. The program prompts me to "Choose Recipient" so I choose myself on the list. Then it prompts me to enter my passphrase.

Once all that's done I hit enter and it adds .pgp to the end of whatever file just encrypted. The same basic method is used to Sign the file.

Does it sound as though what I said is correct and that the file I wanted to encrypt was indeed encrypted?

Can anyone crack my files without the passphrase? I'm sure it depends on the complexity and length of the passphrase.
