I have an apache installation with /var/www/bob as the document root and the only site served up. I have bob as the directory's owner, and he is able to upload his files to that folder via ftp (vsftpd on the server). When a browser tries to access the pages, it simply gets a 403 forbidden. The problem occurs when apache2 tries to access the files bob uploads. The www-data user (Apache daemon) gets permission denied when I try to cat bob's files in the shell, so it's purely a permissions issue. What I can't figure out is how to give the Apache daemon the ability to read bob's files while also making certain it does not have the ability to modify any of them.

I have a web server in my kitchen with apache running on it. Since the upload speed is quite low due to my isp I would like to execute a bash script that uploads a file to another server through a website (which is htaccess protected) The idea in general: Someone with access to my website browses through a folder, copies a file path to an input form and presses "upload". Rather than executing a bash script directly I could have a cron job running in background that finds the path and then uploads the file to the other server I have userspace on and is accessible via sftp/ssh. The file would be than erased later after a couple of days or so. That person would be able to access the file with higher speed some time later without logging in via ssh and doing all that manually.

Suppose I have a binary program with only execute permission enabled for the current user. How (in general) would I be able to obtain a core dump of the file? I think I have read it somewhere but I want to know if there are more ways of doing it.

My shell script runs from the command line, but fails in cronjob. /bin/sh: asper.sh: Permission denied
-rw-r--r-- asper.sh I guess the permission should look like '-rwxr-xr--' How can I change the permission to be like that?

Here are some example files that are shared through samba:
-rwxrwx--- user1 group1 file1.txt
-rwxrwx--- user1 group1 file2.txt
When user2 (who is also a member of group1) edits file2.txt the permissions change:
-rwxrwx--- user1 group1 file1.txt
-rwxrw---- user2 group1 file2.txt
user1 then has issues opening the file. This also goes for new files that are created (they are missing the group execute permission).
I have set the option "create mask = 0770" in my smb.conf. Without this set, permissions default to something like -rwxr--r--

Me and 2 others are working on a website (Bob, Mike, and Joe). We made a group called developers and each of us are in the developers group. The Apache server runs as www-data. When we upload files, the file owner is the users name and the group is "developers".
/etc/group has the following
Code:
www-data:x:33:
bob:x:1000:
mike:x:1001:
[Code]....
I have always just set everything to 775 and just called it good. Well I don't want to wake up to a Russian political message plastered all over the site. It's time I do things properly.

I am trying to set up a windows file server using fedora 14 with samba. when I go to the a windows machine I can log in the the samba server. When I try to go to the folder I need access to I get and error saying "you might not have permission to use this network resource" I am trying to access my home directory. Directory /home/mike, username mike. As far as I can tell it is not a permission of the directory. I have a user set up in samba that uses the mike user account.

My setup is two laptops connected by crossover cable. One runs Windows xp the other Fedora 13. Neither is connected to internet. I'm using a subnet of 192.168.1.x On Fedora eth0 is up, apache runs because it creates pidfile. Everything pings fine. Windows xp ip pings fine from command line. Gave Windows xp a static ip of 192.168.1.1 mask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 1.2, same as eth0. xp says it sees the server. eth0 is up.
DirectoryIndex looks at index.html. I created that file with very simple code and put it in document root. Document root permissions are 755. Access_log 770. Error_log 644. Apache User 755. Listen 80 When I type the ip for eth0 (192.168.1.2) into firefox, firefox gives me an error message - can't find server. The connection status says its connected.
The error log includes a line: [warn]./mod_dnssd.c:No services found to register I don't know what this means. Apache is not writing to access_log. When I cat the path to access_log I get nothing, then a command prompt. I'm looking for the part I'm missing that will let Apache serve that index.html file to firefox so I can see how my code looks to firefox as I go.

i use virtual hosts to develop several web applications. These are located in my home folder under /home/user/projects/project After a fresh installation, i always get a 403 forbidden error. After googling and reading on this forum, several solutions are mentioned for this problem. But i can hardly believe putting using a chmod 755 on my home folder is a correct solution. What is the correct way of doing things in this situation?

started setting up my 3rd ubuntu server under the OS of Ubuntu Linux 9.04 64 bit. I have configured the server to allow root access and am using this to execute this file. As you can see from the screenshot of PuTTy, the file exists but is refusing to load up. I am also able to nano the file. I have tried moving the file to /root/ and still had no luck.

I've just upgraded my laptop to Fedora 14 and installed LAMP on it for a test environment. I've followed the official instructions to install but seem to have a problem that I didn't have on F13 or Opensuse. Each time I try to access index.php on localhost I get a permission denied message and an SElinux alert. I have tried 7 different solutions on various forums and just can't view anything in a browser.
/var/www/html has been set to chmod 777
/var/www/html/index.php has also been set to chmod 777
A standard user can definitely read and write to the above files/folder. Until I commented it out the Welcome/Test page was working perfectly.

I can't seem to be able to save a file properly with java on the sheevaplug (ubuntu)
Here's my test-code:
Code:
try {
File f = new File("test.txt");
System.out.println(f.exists());
[Code]....
it seems to save the file, but nothing that is readable in ubuntu.
I'm using the openjdk-6-jre package by the way.
EDIT: NVM! Forgot to cd into the directory holding the jar before running, so it was working but it was saving to the $HOME dir...

I've got a bachelors in Computer Information Systems from Metro State in MN, but sadly, we didn't spend much time familiarizing ourselves with UNIX based OSs. I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions to pose later as well. I'll pay it back with help for anyone who's working on an evil Nortel router.
I believe I've got VSFTP set up and configured (mostly) the way I want. Here is the config file:
Code:

anonymous_enable=NO
local_enable=YES
write_enable=YES
dirmessage_enable=YES

Here's the background.
1x Windows Vista laptop (laptop1)
1x Windows 7 laptop (laptop2)
1x Mac laptop (laptop 3)
I am running Ubuntu server with 3 hard drives. I have Webmin installed. So far, I have the three laptops being able to connect to samba and accessing /home/insert_user_here. All laptop users have access to my /media/data2 (photographs, videos). That's all good. At first, I couldn't get other users but laptop 3 to access /media/sdb1, but I fixed that by changing permission to 755 so I guess everyone can access this. Atm, I want to only allow laptop #3 to connect to /media/sdd1 (be able to read/write/etc.) while laptop 1 and 2 can't even see the files. Also, laptop 1 and 2 can't seem to read and write through file share.

Code:

mike : www-data adm dialout cdrom plugdev lpadmin sambashare admin
when I run ls...
Code:
mike@webserver:/var/www$ ls -la

drwxrwxr-x 2 www-data www-data 4096 2011-04-22 09:30 .
drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 2011-04-20 18:22 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2011-04-22 09:24 index.html
I assumed that means that the users in the www-data group can read, write and execute within this folder?
But when I try to create a new file/dir I get permission denied message.
I'm having fun messing around with my new LAMP server, but this problem is annoying me now .
(Oh and the index.html file was created by root, it's a blank file and can be deleted)

I have a triple boot system with Ubuntu 11.04, Windows 7 and Windows-XP on it. My disc configuration is something like this... ('cause I think it would be required for you to understand my problem) I have a 250GB hard disk which was originally partitioned with Windows-XP in six partitions C,D,E,F,G and H (All NTFS type) with 'C' drive having Windows-XP on it and 'D' drive having Windows-7 on it.
I installed Ubuntu on the 'H' drive by partitioning it into two halves of approximately 20GB each. One partition is named 'New Volume' as per Windows naming scheme. On the other partition I installed my Ubuntu-11.04 OS. As per my plan I would be using this 'New Volume' for all my Ubuntu related data and software only. I want to install 'Ant' build tool for Java to be usable on my Ubuntu. For this, as described on the Apache Ant user manual I downloaded the 'apache-ant-1.8.2-bin.tar.gz' and extracted it. All this I did in the 'New Volume' drive.
Now as per the 'Ant' manual I needed to change a file's ('/media/New Volume/ubuntu files/software files/apache-ant-1.8.2/bin/ant') permission to executable, which is currently set to '-rw-------' and I want it to be '-rwx------'. I've tried various things such as 'chmod/sudo' and also tried changing the permission with the 'root' user, but so far I've not been able to change the permissions for this file. However, if I copy the 'apache-ant-1.8.2' folder to '/home' directory then I've been able to change the permission for the concerned file.
