Ubuntu :: Move Thunderbird To New Machine?
May 28, 2010
I have set up a new machine with Lucid and installed Thunderbird 3.0.4. I want to move the mail account etc from the old machine to the new. I understand that I have to copy the 'thunderbird' folder in 'home' to the new machine. However, if I don't create a mail account profile in the new machine, this folder doesn't show up.
I don't want to end up with duplicate inbox folders when I copy over the old profile.
What's the correct way to do this? When I have done it before, I always seem to end up with multiple (empty folders)

It appears that my HDD is failing at the moment, so I'm going to replace it by two new disks (RAID1) over the weekend.
At the same moment I'll stick in another 6GB RAM. Because I'm currently running the 32-bit system, I'll be upgrading to 64-bit (doh).
Now then, is it possible to copy all Firefox and Thunderbird settings (settings, accounts, bookmarks, cookies etc) over to the other disk?
If so, which folder(s) do I have to copy?

I recently moved to Thunderbird 3, and liked the tab viewing, even the search module. I have problem though, that currently tried to solve, without success. When I search for mails from a sender (eg. coss@cat.com), a new tab is opened, and I can see them all, but I can't figure out how to copy all these mails into a desired folder of Inbox (eg. cat). So ... I use Ububtu 9.10.

Copying my Thunderbird files to another machine
Two questions:
1. Can I copy xx.default to DVD, its 1.5GB in size, and then merge it into the xx.default of the other machine or try and connect through a crossover cable. I tried to copy onto a flash drive but it did not recognize Inbox.sbd as a folder.
2. How do I manager the existing files in the receiving machine, it has an existing mail account.

I've been landed with a disk from a friend whose machine we've never managed to get into the BIOS of and tweak the boot order to include a CD drive.
I pulled the disk from my own system and ran a from-scratch install on this shiny blank disk with numerous of the tweaks I like and he'll need. (Getting pleased with how the time to usable is still dropping doing an install).
What I'm concerned about is sticking this disk in his machine and using it. I've gone with the sort-of generic 32-bit base even though both his machine and mine are Athlons. However, he's a musician and has some rather nice audio kit - as well as, I suspect, different video hardware.
Am I likely to hit noticeable problems? Is there some script I can arm myself with to rescan available hardware and update config, or can someone give a list of packages to completely remove then reinstall via the recovery boot?
I know the latter option may well cause some dependency problems that see stuff I've already installed lost - I can cope with that if I can get the GUI running smoothly.

I have a netbook running ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and it is connected to the internet using DSL high speed internet Comcast---standard coaxial cable to modem to ethernet cabel to my netbook. The wired connection is Auto eth0. It works fine.
However, I have recently installed ubuntu 9.04 desktop edition on ANOTHER laptop and cannot get it to connect to the internet using this same modem and cable. When I plug in the ethernet cable it searches for wireless networks but won't recognise the wired network connection---Wired Network disconnected. Auto eth0 shows up under Network Connections and it has the MAC address and is set to connect automatically. I have tried restarting the computer and unplugging and plugging in the modem after about 15 min.
why I cannot just move my comcast ethernet cable from one machine to another?

Can one install Linux on a dedicated hard disk on one machine, then move that disk to another machine and boot from it? I know Windows won't allow you to do that, but can it be done with Linux?

I have two servers on my network (at home). Let's call them A and B.
I have a small shell script that I have written on server A that zips up a file, backs up a database. It's triggered by cron once a day.
After I run it, I would like to move this file from server A to server B.
As I said, both are on the same network (in the same room, actually), and so obviously have different network IPs.
What are my options to move these files? It would need to be something that was done in perhaps a shell script that was, like the shell script that zips the files, is triggered by a cron job.
I'm assuming there are actual applications for this sort of theng (rsync?), but can it be done with a shell script? It seems very simple and basic...
How might this be done?
Systems:
Server A - CentOS v. 5
Server B - RHEL v. 4

I would like to install Ubuntu (latest stable) on a VirtualBox machine, set it up, install several apps, and then deploy it on a real PC. I think the main issue is the new hardware (which sould be different from the 'virtual' one). What should I do at that time? Is Ubuntu able to detect and install the new hardware?

I want to install Ubuntu 10.04 to another machine alongside that other machine's XP. I know I could just run the install disc; but I'd like to take what changes I've made to Ubuntu along with it - for instance, TrueCrypt, Simple Backup, AdobeReader 3 (I think that's an addition), K3b, MuseScore, and some other applications I've added along the way. Also, I went thru some Terminal commands to get Brasero to copy CD's recently and would like to avoid doing that again.

Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.

I had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.
This is what I did:
First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).
Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL
Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder
Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.
Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".
And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)
My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?

For Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / Gnome 2.30.2.
I have two applets on my Gnome panel -- NetworkManager Applet 0.8, and Klipper (it works better than Glipper) -- that I want to move.
HOWEVER, right-clicking the panel icons does not enable me to move these applets, as follows:
- NetworkManager Applet 0.8 does not include a Move item in its list of options.
- Klipper displays a long list of Klipper options but no Move option.
How I can move these items to new locations on the Gnome panel?

Im running my website on a Debian machine that started to get high load so i wanted to move the mysql server to it's own machine. and here is the problem. The second machine is also Debian and is behind a router only running mysql. i have forwarded the port 3306 to the second machine and created an A record for "mysql" so mysql.mydomain.com points towards the second machine. However, when i try to connect my websites script to the second machine i get the following error "Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 111" when i open the site in a a browser.
edit: i can connect to it without a problem localy trough phpmyadmin etc.

I run version 10.04 GNOME. My problem is (after substantial searching) that I need to have both users ('juliusz' and 'sarah') running Thunderbird but with the same profile (settings, email, accounts etc. preferably of 'juliusz'). The only results on the internet are share Thunderbird between Windows and Ubuntu.
I have two users juliusz and sarah. I need either of them to have the same profile, always in synch whenever they logon to own account. When I tried to edit sarah's /home/sarah/.mozilla-thunderbird/profile.ini by inserting: Path=/home/juliusz/.mozilla-thunderbird/xxxxxxx.default after i run Thunderbird for 'sarah' I get message: "Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system." I checked with "ps aux" there is no Thunderbird running in sarah's session. There is no Thunderbird running in juliusz's session when I reloged to juliusz.

I installed Thunderbird via the opensuse "1 click install". the installation ran smoothly, but now a click on the Thunderbird icon does not activate any mail client; the only success is that Thunderbird icon jumps joyfully and then disappears.

I read once that you could use VMWare's converter to convert a physical machine into a virtual machine to run in VirtualBox. Can someone point me in the direction of a tutorial or just give me instructions on how to do this? I was very confused by the converter and how to get the image to work with virtualbox.

I have an ubuntu kk laptop connected via wireless to my mixed network (xp, win7, other ubuntu), but i can not ping said machine or connect via ssh. Internet and smb-browsing ON this machine work, as does pinging FROM it. If this was a windows machine, I'd say a firewall is in the way, but since it's a vanilla karmic install, this should not be the case (or should it?).

I remember it being really easy to add a printer attached to another computer using Ubuntu, but I don't remember exactly what made it so easy. All I know is that now that I have switched to Kubuntu the process has become much harder because now I have to find out some special locations, numbers etc. for it to connect to the printer. It's connected to a Windows XP machine on the other side of the house.
It says alot about 'contacting the network administrator' if I am unsure about what to put in. But I am more or less the network administrator. how to find out what numbers to put in so that my Linux machine can connect and print to the Windows machine? Or maybe someone knows a few commands to share? I go to Applications > Settings > System settings, Printer configuration, New Printer, New Network printer, and then there are a few options but I don't know which one to choose. Windows Printer via Samba, I guess? Then in the box that says smb://[enter stuff here] I need to put in info but I don't know how to find that info.

I have ubuntu-8.04.1-server installed on virtual machine. It works perfect. Now, I made copy of this virtual machine. I started that copied machine and it works fine, except one thing: network does not work!
I have several others VMs with freeBSD, openBSD or Windows on it, but only ubuntu machine hes network problem after coping. I tried some other VM with ubuntu on it - same problem! I downloaded VM with ubuntu - same problem.I take a look into /etc/network/interfaces file and it looks just as it should (same as before coping) but ifconfig command returns parameters for lo only (before coping there was eth0 and lo).

I am trying to establish the easiest way to share a folder from an Ubuntu machine to a Windows machine. In the past I have added things to smb.conf and that has all worked fine but what I am trying to do is to figure out what the "new user" way of doing this is so that when I am helping other people I know I am getting them to do the simplest thing.I completely removed samba and reinstalled it so that I didn't have any configuration. Right clicked on a folder and selected "Sharing Options" ticked the "Share this folder box" gave it a name and a comment and ticked the other two boxes.
When I went to the windows laptop then it kept asking for a username/password and nothing worked.Back on the ubuntu machine I did sudo smbpasswd -a [username] and created a blank password. Now from the windows machine I can access the shared folder. Is the smbpasswd step still required? It's very confusing for a new user as there is no suggestion that anything other than right clicking on the folder and choosing the options you want would be required. Is it something to do with the fact that this is an ubuntu machine that has gradually been upgraded through versions and this problem wouldn't have been there from a new install?

I have been trying to SCP a couple files from my Ubuntu 10.10 machine to a Fedora 12 machine. Before today, did it with out any problems, always worked. Today however; after the SCP is complete from my machine, the file on the other machine is zero bytes, an empty file. The only thing I can remember getting changed was the new kernel that was in the update I did today. But I don't think that would have changed the SCP works.
