Ubuntu :: Close Thunderbird From Command Line?

how to close thunderbird fromterminal? I don't mean to kill the process,I just would like a "clean" exit.I'm asking this because my setup is so that the thrash should be cleared at exit so and the deleted email are deleted from the server. I then set a cron task so that thunderbird is killed but apparently doing so the emails are not deleted from the thrash (whereas they are if I close the application), and I'd like to change the task to close thunderbird rather then kill the process.

It works, but as soon as I close my terminal, wally terminates. Is there anyway I can make it not terminate?
2) why is that option disabled?

I would like to Close/Open port 21 using command line. I have an FTP server and I don't want to have the port open all the time. I need only two hours by week to be open port 21 from outside to inside.So I need to know the command line for opening and closing the port 21 then I will implement this in a script into cron.hourly.

From reading around the web, it looks like Firefox's "quick view" of an RSS feed sometimes lets you "Subscribe to this feed using" Thunderbird. For whatever reason, that's not an automatically-added option with my setup (FF 3.5.something + Thunderbird 3.0.something on Linux), so I figured I could just "Choose Application...", point at the Thunderbird binary, and be on my way. Not so -- nothing appears to happen. If I run thunderbird from the command line as
thunderbird "http://path/to/feed" the app launches as normal. If it's already running, absolutely nothing happens. Is this impossible? Is there some mojo I can pass Firefox to tell it that Thunderbird exists? Should I just suck it up and copy/paste the URLs manually?

i've gotten my fedora 12 to the point where i can run python3 scripts from command line and can call up python 2.6.2 idle with the command 'idle' from command line. what command will call up python3 (3.1.2 to be exact) idle?

I know my way around MS Windows much better, but I just don't feel right trying to program something for Android on a Microsoft operating system. I am interested in Android programming so I followed the instructions on [URL] to install the environment on my computer...
I just installed the JDK, SDK, Eclipse successfully (or I assume):
* When I get to Step 4 where I'm supposed to run 'android' it will not run. I get the error message "android: command not found" (I am definitely in the right directory).
** When I double-click it in nautilus, it opens up in gedit. I can set the permissions in nautilus (through the properties - Allow executing file as a program) and get it to work,

how to pass something more than a one-command startup for gnome-terminal. I will give an example of what I'm trying to do here:

This same error occurs if the gnome-terminal line is changed to

Is there any way to pass more than one command on to gnome-terminal? I have tried various single and double quoting senarios and in a final attempt, I abstracted to an exported function all to no avail. Perhaps even though gnome-term is better at many things than xterm, xterm trumps it in this instance.

When we execute date | wc on the command line, it goes fine.then | is not treated as an argument. Why?

which does not work on the invisible directories (why?). When I used ".*" as wildcard it changed all (visible) files including the parent directory (the one I was currently working in which is the "dot") . I can change the invisible directories owner and group using dophin but how is it done from the command line?

i am working on a project that uses message queues. i am able to successfully create them and they are working fine. now the problem is to close/remove message queues without software or mq_close / mq_unlink command. earlier when i worked on rh9, there is ipcs utility. we use ipcs to see all the existing message queues and ipcrm to remove them. however ipcs is not working for message queues in RHEL 5.3. Neither ipcs shows the exisiting message queues and neither we are able to use ipcrm. Plz guide to close/remove the queues with ipcs or any other command/utility from shell itself.

Using netbook asus 1005ha with lucid beta 1 with most of updates on learning to use the CLI and headaches cd command does not seem to reconise directories here is a sample

yeh i know read the f#####g manual i am but any help would be greatly accepted tried sudo with same commands same problem did have a problem on my debian system that was to do with paths this is not the same on a different footnote anyone thinking of upgrading to lucid sit tight on 9.10 there are still to many issues that need ironing out for a system that is your main system.

1. I didn't like the icon theme and changed it to Ubuntu Mono Light. But is there a way to get the Min/Max/Close buttons to how they are in Radiance when maximized, or is that dependant on something else?
2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?

Palimpsest Disk Utility shows that /dev/sda3 partition has too many Bad Sectors: 1732.
I know, that my HDD is dying. But if I'm not mistaken I can close this sectors from system, because when Linux tries to read file with bad sectors - it just stops.
Can I ask you to give me terminal command to do so? I've searched on Wiki and in Man, but.. i'm bad searcher

Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.

How can we do everything, or as much as we can do, from the command line? In particular, I am trying to get rid of the top panel in Ubuntu. Because,
1) It takes unnecessary valuable space.
2) Even if I use a huge monitor, it introduces distraction to me while working.
I created a shortcut so that with a single keyboard key I can open a terminal. For example, if I want to restart the computer, I use: "sudo shutdown -r now". Or I can even create a shorter alias. So I do not need the logout menu. But my problem is, some programs put an icon on the top panel when they are working. So, what is the best way of using command line, and getting rid of the top menu.

I have a virtual private server that I SSH into. While I am using SSH, I need to be able to FTP from command line to another server. I want to do this in the easiest most sure way possible. (I am not using my real IP below for security.) I have tried the following commands.

About two months ago I upgraded my dual boot Linux-x86-64 Vista from Heron to 10.04 Lucid. Initially everything worked fine including wireless etc. Once I accidentally changed a few /etc permissions which caused a problem, but fixed it going into recovery mode. For the past weeks, I only used the windows. Over the weekend I tried logging into Ubuntu, the gnome would not come up. So, I went into recovery mode and typed "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" which also went through. However, after that I lost the recovery options. I had used that command very successfully in the past. Right now, I have no command line that would allow me to type something. I was wondering if there are any keys Alt+Del + something that would give me a prompt I can work with. I'm totally baffled as to how this can happen.
