Ubuntu Networking :: Cant Get Wireless Working - Have 2 Adapters ?
Mar 24, 2010
I have a Netgear WG111T USB and a Edimax EW-7711UAn USB.
I have the latest version of ubuntu.
I have installed ndiswrapper, and loaded the windows drivers in for the netgear, and it will show up in iwconfig but wont connect to anything, I got rid of network manager and installed wicd as I heard that may solve the problem, to no avail.
The Edimax one, I got because I read it worked straight out of the box, but looking into it apparently i need to compile the firmware from ralinks website, but I get errors with that.
Im not too fussed what one I use as long as I get a wireless connection, currently i have it connected to my laptop through a cable and bridging the connections.
If I type in iwconfig with the edimax:

I'm in a spot where my wireless access is about 200 ft from my computer so I bought a tl-wn721 adapter. I have already gotten the drivers for it but somehow I am still stuck with my wireless adapter built in to my sony vaio sz220 (yeah I know it's old...that's why I run ubuntu). So how do I change wireless adapters? The system does say that the realtek drivers associated with the 721 adapter are in use and enabled but in Win 7 I have much higher signal than what is currently displayed. Usually it's somewhere in the high 80 or 90s. Now it's hard to even get 70 and that's how I know that I'm on my built in adapter. I ran lspci -nn and this was my output. I might just not be searching for the right thing. BTW I'm running 10.04 LTS.

Like some others I have found people are having problems with network manager from time to time. It seems that wicd is the solution. Will this work with ubuntu 10.04?

My recent CENT OS install went very well. However the only thing missing is wireless support for my modest FR-300USB Wireless adapter. Since I do not have the expertise to create a driver I need to know where I can find what wireless adapters are supported.

Running Fedora 13 and have it working great acting as my firewall/router/samba server etc. The problem is the connection is shared by a fair number of us and the ISP is getting annoyed with the amount of torrent traffic. One of us has access to a wireless network and we'd like to figure out how to route some of the traffic through that without having to disconnect from the current network. I put a wireless card in the fedora box and can connect to the wireless but then it messes up the current network and pretty much nothing works.
At the least if I could run a torrent client (e.g. ktorrent or whatever) on the Linux box and have it download through the wireless card on tcp port XXXXX I would be happy. The torrent client and those tcp/udp ports can be dedicated to that wireless card, the rest of the network doesn't need to get involved if that makes things simpler. Not looking for a step by step tutorial, just an explanation of what needs to be done and a shove in the right direction. My experience is limited to single WAN connections up to this point.

I want to switch my laptop from XP to Ubuntu, but right now, i cant risk installing it. i dont want to have it partitioned so i can dual boot, so for now i only run the try-it-out mode. Before i consider installing though, i want to see if i can get everything to work ahead of time, that way im not regreting instalation. I have a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, with 55GB hard drive and 516MB ram. So far, the trial mode is working great, but the wireless will not work. Ive tried to install the driver, but i am unable to do so. I have looked this up, and i have tried many things, and so far, none have worked.I was wondering if it was just part of the trial thing or not, but it is a Broadcom Wireless BCM4318 driver

When originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.
Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.
I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.

I have been searching the forums for quite a while, to add extra Loopback adapter in Centos 5.1, but no success! Could you please suggest me the steps? in Windows, it is quite easy to add as many adapters as you want. wondering, if this is even possible in Linux? I have to run GNS3/Dynamips for router emulation and bind those Loopback adapters to virtual routers!

I have just installed openSuse 11.4 KDE 64-bit on a Dell M1330. When I click on my networking panel, it says WLAN interface is unavailable. I've followed the steps in the stickied post and found the WLAN hardware info, a screenshot of which is below:Uploaded with ImageShack.usNext it says to do this - you need to look at the logs, in particular the info in /var/log/boot.msg. To see this, you need YaST => Miscellaneous => System Logs and select boot.msg.In YaST there is no such option for system logs under miscellaneous, so I can't do that. The results of the sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist scan command produce the following:

Just upgraded to the newest version of Ubuntu(unity), and my wireless isn't working. I have the 14e4:4315 Wireless Card so I followed this posts [URL].... And still have no wifi, when I click the icon in the menu bar it says under "Wireless Networks": "wireless is disabled by hardware switch", which ins't true because on my Vostro 1520, there is only one switch and it is in the on position. I've tried 3 versions of ubuntu and none of them work with wifi getting tired of it.

I have a Centos 5.2 VM running under Windows 2008 Hyper-V. If I add two "legacy Nic's" and bridge them, everything appears to work fine. However, if I remove the legacy nics and replace them with two synthetic nics (linux integration components), the nics seems to function fine UNTIL I add them to a bridge. This VM will eventually be used as a DansGuardian/Squid transparent proxy for a local library. The logical layout is represented by the attached jpg image. I have also included the ifcfg- scripts for the adapters and bridge for both scenarios. It would also be useful if someone else has Hyper-V with the integration components and dual physical nics to see if they can reproduce my symptoms on their box.Legacy Adapters:

In the wake of a spate of posts complaining that wireless is not working in 10.04 here is mine. I'm on a (relatively old) AMD Duron 1.5Ghz, 1.5G memory with a VIA KM-266 motherboard. Wireless worked fine in 9.10. With a fresh install of the new 10.04, the usb wireless adapter is not detected, the tab to add a new wireless connection is grayed out, starting the KNetworkManager (did I got the name right?) does nothing (that is, no application starts), etc.note: if you are wondering how I am accessing the internet, I just fired up the 9.10 live CD, which as you can imagine is not the most practical thing in the world. Here is the info. The commands lsusb and lspci spit the following:
Code:
grodrigues@grodrigues-desktop:~$ lsusb

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.4.2. The wireless worked perfectly in 9.04, but did not not work at all in 9.10, and now 10.4.2. I'm running a Planex USB wireless dongle on an ancient ShuttleXPC SN41G (circa 2003) - the wireless dongle is an XLink Kai GW-USMini2N. I'm connected right now on the Shuttle via Ethernet cable, but would really like to get the wireless up and running again. Here's all the info I could get as per the pinned topic instructions:

I installed ubuntu 10.04 in my laptop hp 620 and wired connection is working but wireless is not working at all. I checked the old posts and when I enter the command "iwconfig" it shows the following:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 RT2860 Wireless ESSID:"" Nickname:"RT2860STA"
Mode: Auto Frequency=2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
Bit Rate:1 Mb/s
RTS thrff Fragment thrff
Link Quality=10/100 Signal level:0 dBm Noise level:-87 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
I read in the older posts that the "Access Point: Not-Associated" should be "Access Point: Invalid" and the command that is used for this purpose is " sudo iwconfig wlan0 ap auto"
and it did work-but for sometime, and again it showed me "not associated" when I restarted.

Previously I have had Linux installed on my laptop (OpenSUSE, Ubuntu) with no problems as far as wireless networking in concerned. Due to wanting to play a certain game (which I have since grown tired of), I reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Recently I have booted up to live DVDs of PC-BSD, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and OpenSUSE 11.2 and I cannot get wireless networking working.
At home I use WPA2 Personal. I put in the passphrase into NetworkManager (the same as I do for Windows), and the computer gets an IP address from the router (I use 10.3.5.x at home). The problem is, I cannot connect to the Internets. If I do "ping -c 3 cnet.com" it gives me the proper response of 216.239.113.101, but if I try to go to cnet.com, I get a page cannot be displayed in Firefox.
I get this error for every website. I don't understand it seeing that I can ping the websites, but even if I put the IP address in the URL, it still doesn't load the page. What am I doing wrong? Everything is dynamic, as in Win7. But everything works perfectly in Windows, but no such luck in Linux. I know it must be something simple, but I'm at a loss. Seeing that I no longer play Star Trek Online, I'd like to put Linux or BSD back on my laptop, but no Internet is not an option.

I've bought an RALINK getnet Wireless USB adapter and am trying to get it to work on a dual boot pc running XP and 9.10. According to the forums and the manufacturers website (www.getnet.com.tw), this should be supported in Linux.
Using the disk that came with it, I have gotten it to work in Windows. I've spent nearly a day scouring the Ubuntu forums and trying different things, but still haven't got it working in 9.10. (I think that most of my confusion is that many of the threads are for earlier versions)
If I type "iwconfig", I get this:
Code:
graeme@graeme-desktop:~$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wmaster0 no wireless extensions.
[Code].....
I have the CD that has a LINUX directory, but am not sure what to do with it. Through other threads I have determined that my drivers are rt2870.sys and .inf and have downloaded these. I'm not really sure what to do with them next..... Many threads talk about going System>Administration>Networking, but I don't have this as an option. I have however got an option which I downloaded called "Windows Wireless Drivers" which seemed to let me load the rt2870.inf driver, but then says "No" after it (not very helpful).
I have enabled Wireless Networking, and added my SSID etc etc, but I still don't connect.
