I have the latest version of ubuntu.
I have installed ndiswrapper, and loaded the windows drivers in for the netgear, and it will show up in iwconfig but wont connect to anything, I got rid of network manager and installed wicd as I heard that may solve the problem, to no avail.
The Edimax one, I got because I read it worked straight out of the box, but looking into it apparently i need to compile the firmware from ralinks website, but I get errors with that.
Im not too fussed what one I use as long as I get a wireless connection, currently i have it connected to my laptop through a cable and bridging the connections.

I'm in a spot where my wireless access is about 200 ft from my computer so I bought a tl-wn721 adapter. I have already gotten the drivers for it but somehow I am still stuck with my wireless adapter built in to my sony vaio sz220 (yeah I know it's old...that's why I run ubuntu). So how do I change wireless adapters? The system does say that the realtek drivers associated with the 721 adapter are in use and enabled but in Win 7 I have much higher signal than what is currently displayed. Usually it's somewhere in the high 80 or 90s. Now it's hard to even get 70 and that's how I know that I'm on my built in adapter. I ran lspci -nn and this was my output. I might just not be searching for the right thing. BTW I'm running 10.04 LTS.

Like some others I have found people are having problems with network manager from time to time. It seems that wicd is the solution. Will this work with ubuntu 10.04?
I know theres a thread for this for fc9 but thats probably kind of outdated now. So I am trying to set up a wireless connection for a pc in my bedroom and just want something that will work out of the box.

So, I'm starting wandering if there is somewhere any compatibility list? I mean if for instance TP-link or D-link would work with broadcom's chip. I would like to use my laptop's built-in wireless module which is HP Broadcom corp. BCM4306 802.11b/g. My laptop is a HP Pavilion zv6000.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHere's the issue: from time to time I have to take away my son's access to the internet, so I exclude his laptop from my wireless Linksys router. Works like a charm, or it did until he discovered that my neighbor also has a wireless router, and hasn't secured it.
So my son sits in the corner of the house closest to my neighbor and uses their internet.
Is there any way I can tell his laptop to NOT access a particular router? Or even better, to only access my router?
Every time I start up my Samsung NC10 the wifi doesn't seem to find my wireless router at all and instead tries to connect to my printers network. To solve this I need to disable and re-enable wireless until it automatically connects. I know this isn't exactly a major problem, it's just getting pretty annoying. I'm using Fedora 11 btw.

I have configured a wireless pcmcia card using ndiswrapper. I'm sure that works, as with the command "iwlist wlan0 scan" gives me back
the list of detected wireless networks. At this point I was wondering: is there a way to detect the new interface (wlan0) with network manager? Even after enabling the wifi card the network manager gnome applet always finds only eth0.
I have a camera with a BNC output that I need to connect to my computer via USB. Currently I have a BNC to RCA adapter on it, which I can leave on or take off. What RCA to USB adapters work on Linux? I have searched extensively and cannot find any that list Linux compatibility. I am open to other suggestions on how to connect the BNC output to USB other than RCA to USB.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install a second NIC on a computer running 10.10 x64 server edition, but am having a bit of trouble and hoping someone can help. I got a used gigabit PCIe ethernet adapter and hooked it up, but it didn't display when I ran ifconfig, so I assumed that it was broken. However, when I plugged in a known working 10/100 adapter from another machine it also wasn't configured.
I then did a bit of investigating and found that both cards ARE detected, but are unable to work for an unknown reason. Here's the output of "sudo lspci | grep -r Ethernet"

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a computer with three video cards and six monitors. Works great on Windows. Trying to get it to run Ubuntu 10.4 as well. It loads fine when I have it configured to run on one adapter; detects both screens, runs ok. But I want to turn the other 4 monitors on and run the whole thing as one extended desktop (one session, etc). So I downloaded and installed the newest ATI driver for Linux, which seems to work, kinda. I ran this to set up the screens:
aticonfig --adapter=all --initial -f Now when I boot, Ubuntu seems to turn on all the screens (3 viewports, each with two cloned displays from what I can tell). When I enter my login info OR move the mouse off the main screen, the screens freeze and the kbd/ms become unresponsive.

I can assure you that the wi-fi is not disabled using a button (my laptop doesn't have such a button), "Fn" key combination or in any other way and the network doesn't go down when I need it.
Are USB WiFi adapters more likely to work in Linux than other WiFi adpaters like PCI cards etc?Im just wondering if they can use a generic USB class driver rather than having to have one for the specific chip set?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy suse wireless has started a new trick: it will list a wep string completely different than the one I have specified. If I correct it some 12-15 times, I can eventually sign on, but not predictably.
There is also intermittently the error message that "wireless is disabled" Trying to figure that one out is a real chore.
The manual wireless switch that works under windows seems to be irrelevant under linux, but the linux wireless seems to only work if I have previously connected under windows.
How can I list all stations with frequency they are at ?
