Ubuntu Networking :: Cant Get Wireless Working - Have 2 Adapters ?

Mar 24, 2010

I have a Netgear WG111T USB and a Edimax EW-7711UAn USB.

I have the latest version of ubuntu.

I have installed ndiswrapper, and loaded the windows drivers in for the netgear, and it will show up in iwconfig but wont connect to anything, I got rid of network manager and installed wicd as I heard that may solve the problem, to no avail.

The Edimax one, I got because I read it worked straight out of the box, but looking into it apparently i need to compile the firmware from ralinks website, but I get errors with that.

Im not too fussed what one I use as long as I get a wireless connection, currently i have it connected to my laptop through a cable and bridging the connections.

If I type in iwconfig with the edimax:

Ubuntu Networking :: Managing / Changing Multiple Wireless Adapters?

Jan 2, 2011

I'm in a spot where my wireless access is about 200 ft from my computer so I bought a tl-wn721 adapter. I have already gotten the drivers for it but somehow I am still stuck with my wireless adapter built in to my sony vaio sz220 (yeah I know it's old...that's why I run ubuntu). So how do I change wireless adapters? The system does say that the realtek drivers associated with the 721 adapter are in use and enabled but in Win 7 I have much higher signal than what is currently displayed. Usually it's somewhere in the high 80 or 90s. Now it's hard to even get 70 and that's how I know that I'm on my built in adapter. I ran lspci -nn and this was my output. I might just not be searching for the right thing. BTW I'm running 10.04 LTS.

Like some others I have found people are having problems with network manager from time to time. It seems that wicd is the solution. Will this work with ubuntu 10.04?

Networking :: Routing Torrents With Multiple Connections / Adapters

Jul 8, 2010

Running Fedora 13 and have it working great acting as my firewall/router/samba server etc. The problem is the connection is shared by a fair number of us and the ISP is getting annoyed with the amount of torrent traffic. One of us has access to a wireless network and we'd like to figure out how to route some of the traffic through that without having to disconnect from the current network. I put a wireless card in the fedora box and can connect to the wireless but then it messes up the current network and pretty much nothing works.

At the least if I could run a torrent client (e.g. ktorrent or whatever) on the Linux box and have it download through the wireless card on tcp port XXXXX I would be happy. The torrent client and those tcp/udp ports can be dedicated to that wireless card, the rest of the network doesn't need to get involved if that makes things simpler. Not looking for a step by step tutorial, just an explanation of what needs to be done and a shove in the right direction. My experience is limited to single WAN connections up to this point.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Centos 5.2 / Hyper-V/ Bridge With Synthetic Adapters Does Not Work?

Jan 27, 2009

I have a Centos 5.2 VM running under Windows 2008 Hyper-V. If I add two "legacy Nic's" and bridge them, everything appears to work fine. However, if I remove the legacy nics and replace them with two synthetic nics (linux integration components), the nics seems to function fine UNTIL I add them to a bridge. This VM will eventually be used as a DansGuardian/Squid transparent proxy for a local library. The logical layout is represented by the attached jpg image. I have also included the ifcfg- scripts for the adapters and bridge for both scenarios. It would also be useful if someone else has Hyper-V with the integration components and dual physical nics to see if they can reproduce my symptoms on their box.Legacy Adapters:

Ubuntu Installation :: Ethernet Adapters Detected But Disabled?

Mar 6, 2011

I'm trying to install a second NIC on a computer running 10.10 x64 server edition, but am having a bit of trouble and hoping someone can help. I got a used gigabit PCIe ethernet adapter and hooked it up, but it didn't display when I ran ifconfig, so I assumed that it was broken. However, when I plugged in a known working 10/100 adapter from another machine it also wasn't configured.

I then did a bit of investigating and found that both cards ARE detected, but are unable to work for an unknown reason. Here's the output of "sudo lspci | grep -r Ethernet"

00:08.0 Bridge: nVidia Corporation MCP55 Ethernet (rev a3) 01:07.0 Ethernet controller: ADMtek NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100 (rev 11) 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: D-Link System Inc DGE-560T PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (rev 11) The bridge is the working onboard NIC, and the others are the ones that I'm trying to get to work. This also might help diagnose the problem:

sudo lshw -C network
Code:
*-network DISABLED
description: Ethernet interface
product: NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100

General :: Ubuntu: Failure To Login With Multiple Video Adapters?

May 10, 2010

I have a computer with three video cards and six monitors. Works great on Windows. Trying to get it to run Ubuntu 10.4 as well. It loads fine when I have it configured to run on one adapter; detects both screens, runs ok. But I want to turn the other 4 monitors on and run the whole thing as one extended desktop (one session, etc). So I downloaded and installed the newest ATI driver for Linux, which seems to work, kinda. I ran this to set up the screens:

aticonfig --adapter=all --initial -f Now when I boot, Ubuntu seems to turn on all the screens (3 viewports, each with two cloned displays from what I can tell). When I enter my login info OR move the mouse off the main screen, the screens freeze and the kbd/ms become unresponsive.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless - Lost It - 'wmaster0 No Wireless Extensions', But Then Refers To Wlan0 As The Wireless Connection

Mar 28, 2010

A friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.

Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:

1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.

2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).

3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.

Fedora :: Ssh Timeout - Returns Deatils Of Two Adapters - 'lo' And 'p2pl'

Jun 15, 2011

I am very new to this and seem to have fallen at the first hurdle configuring ssh...

I believe I have got ssh running (on Fedora 15) as running:

results in a password prompt and successful login

Then to find my ipaddress i ran:

this returns deatils of two adapters... 'lo' and 'p2pl'. I assumed p2pl was the one (although was expecting something like eth0) and took the address to be 'inet addr: 192.168.1.5'.

However, using this from putty on my windows7 machine (locally) results in a fatal network timeout everytime.

General :: Bonding Two WiFi Adapters Into Single Connection?

Nov 3, 2010

I saw a network once that used bonding (some people called it "port trunking") to combine two network cards into a single connection to get twice the bandwidth. I have a slow Wifi network with not so great reception. I actually have two spare WiFi cards and want to try to bond them so I can get a faster intranet (not internet). Has anyone successfully bonded two WiFi cards and had pleasant results? Is there an easier way to get better bandwidth with two cards? My router and my remote machine are both running Linux.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Hybrid Graphics Driver / Giving Aticonfig Command It Says No Adapters Detected?

Apr 30, 2011

I'm running a hybrid graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 6630m) so naturally I'd like to have full functionality between the two.

Here's what I've done so far:
Downloaded the .run file from AMD's website
Built packages for both AMD and Intel side of the card
Unpackaged said packages

I used ATI Catalyst's GUI to install (in hindsight terminal might have been better and more informative) and it is now saying

After installation of the generated package, it is important to save your X Window configuration file, and then run 'aticonfig --initial' (in a console window) to complete the basic configuration, please run aticonfig from a console window or AMD CCC:LE from the Desktop Manager Menu

So how and why do i save my X Window config and when I give the aticonfig command it says no adapters detected

Ubuntu Networking :: Get Wireless Network Adapter To Be Read By 'Windows Wireless Drivers'

Nov 24, 2010

I recently reformatted and dual partitioned to both Windows 7 as well as ubuntu 10.10. Loading works fine and Windows 7 is 100% operational. I cannot seem to get my wireless network adapter to be read by Ubuntus 'Windows Wireless Drivers' gui. Here are the steps that I have done THUS far, to make sure that we are all on the right path. Before I go any further, my wireless network adapter is an old school WUSB11 Linksys Wireless Network Adapter (running version 2.6).

1) Downloaded and installed "ndiswrapper" from ubuntu's main website. I downloaded the common, utils and ndisgtk files and installed them accordingly.
2) I extracted these three files to the desktop of Ubuntu and accessed the terminal page.
3) From terminal I typed "cd Desktop" to change the directory to the desktop.
4) Next, I typed in "Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-common_1.54-2ubuntu1_all.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.54-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndisgtk_0.8.5-1_i386.deb"
5) This installed Windows Wireless Drivers gui successfully and I can access it.
6) I have downloaded the driver files for the adapter from the cisco website and searched them for the required files needed.
7) After extracting the .INF file from the "Drivers" directory named "NETUSB.SYS" (I wasn't sure if the other associated files within the same folder needed to be present together with NETUSB so I moved everything to the desktop) I typed in "sudo ndiswrapper -i NETUSB.inf". After accessing the Windows Wireless Drivers gui I have noticed that the 'netusb' driver is present yet under it, the system states "Hardware present: No". This leads me to believe that maybe I installed incorrectly or my "fireware?" is not present? I was reading through the installation guide posted on the ubuntu website that in addition to the .INF file we also need the BIN file(s)? and SYS file(s)?.. The folder with the drivers for my adapter contains a BIN file but it is not within the "Drivers" section of the folder.
9) Upon mousing over the network Icon naturally my hardware is still not present.
10) From what I gather after the system finds the hardware I am to write into the terminal
