View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to route packets coming from a standalone switch port which is a mirror ("tap") of another port ("source"). I can't seem to forward packets whose MAC address is for a different device (the actual "target" of "source"). My device is in promisc mode,I can see the incoming packets in tcpdump and Wireshark. The only packets which get forwarded are those which have my MAC destination address (I changed the wiring to come straight from source and not the mirror port, to get "my" MAC address in the packet). My routing table is configured to forward and I have ip_forwarding enabled, obviously (otherwise packets sent to my MAC wouldn't route). By the way, the incoming packets are all VLAN tagged and I have matching subinterfaces.
Q1 - is this inherent, that packets won't get "passed up" to the IP layer unless the MAC addresses match?
Q2 - Would ebtables be a good solution, i.e. rewrite the dest MAC address to my own MAC addr and send to the INPUT target?
what entry do I have to add to my ifcg-eth1 file to put the "nic" in promiscuous mode?

I am trying to do something outlandish with iptables (or so I think!).I have a source sending udp packets to a destination (say dst11). Using port mirroring I am able to get all these packets to a different machine (say dst22). I am able to see these packets on dst22 interface using tcpdump.I want to analyze the packets on dst22. So what I do is put dst22 interface in promiscuous mode (using ifconfig eth0 promisc). This in theory should get the packet through the MAC layer. Now using iptables I am trying to DNAT the packets in nat prerouting to change the packets destination IP to dst22's interface and change the destination port.

After seeing those 4G phone commercials with that newfangled mobile hotspot tech, I have to admit I was eager to trade in my crappy 2 year old CDMA phone for one. That is, until I saw the price tag. 30$ a month for hotspot? No way, so what I did was activate the tethering feature buried deep within the primitive OS accessible only with a plethora of codes and hackery. So long story short: I can now network on the go because Ubuntu sees my device as a "mobile broadband device". Unfortunately, my ipod lacks a USB port for tethering so I use my freed up wireless card to make an AD-HOC network for my ipod to connect through my makeshift modem. Now, my issue is that the modem isn't really that mobile any more because I have to have my laptop OPEN to keep my networks on ,otherwise I close my laptop and no more Adhoc or mobile broadband! So, my question is if I can close my laptop but still keep it connected to the mobile broadband and broadcasting the adhoc network.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI attempted to install Catalyst 10.11 for my ATI HD 2600XT and the system now only displays lines and a large block of pixels where the mouse would go. CTRL-ALT-F1 kills the system and does not provide a command prompt. This is a single installation, not dual-boot, but there is no Press Esc to access the Grub menu during startup so I cannot choose safe mode. I attempted to get into Recovery mode using the flash drive that I used to install the system and it tells me there is no Recovery kernel (I used the 64-bit Desktop installer, not alternative). Does anyone know an alternative to get into the Grub menu other than ESC during bootup? Alternatively, do I need to download the 64-bit Alternative ISO and create a new boot disk with it so I can access Recovery mode? Is there something else I'm not thinking of?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed ubuntu 9.10/9.04 on my usb key as live image couple of time. I have trouble when I try to install wine on my usb key. I am wondering what is the difference if I install my ubuntu into my usb key directly? will that be slower compared with live CD mode? I guess live CD mode may use memory as part of harddisk to save temepory files and normal usb linux installation won't do this for me. Is this true?
If so, do I have a choice to point my tmp directory to system memory area?
When I first installed ubuntu 10.10, the display was for some reason tinted green and shifted a few inches to the right. After experimenting with the resolution preferences, I eventually got it to a large resolution (1280x720 ... or something like that) yet is was quite blurry. I found out that the problem was with my monitor after I switched it to TV mode, then back to PC mode. It became perfectly clear! All I had to do then was adjust the screen positioning by shifting it left a bit.
Even though I have made the resolution I figured out to be default, whenever I turn the PC on after shutting down, it goes back to the "green-and-to-the-side" mode. :/ Ain't really a big problem, until I tried to fiddle with the resolution preferences s'more.
Somehow, I have set it to be twice as wide of the maximum my monitor can display, went back to being green tinted for some reason, and is completely shifted left (yet the right side is still visible) This means that I cannot see what is going on the left side, and cannot adjust the resolution preferences, nor can I click blindly cuz the border is only around my visible side of the screen. Now it is stuck like this.
I've researched many hours and eventually found the terminal command for the resolution preferences. it popped up on the visible side. Although it was to no avail cuz I HAVE TRIED EVERY SETTING AND OPTION and absolutely nothing changed. I assume a system restore would simply revert it back to the previous satisfactory settings, but the thing is I want to FIX it. I am new to this terminal stuff, so I want to learn it and all that. To put it simply, here's what I want:
Learn how to manually adjust resolution without depending on a simple dialog box. Make the satisfactory resolution default and consistent through turning it on and off. Link that could teach me the essential commands, all this googling is stressful. D:

IPV4 and IPV6, I unclicked the box to require this for connection to complete.Somewhere else, there was a list of servers to ignore. I removed them all. I can't get my wireless into monitor mode. I;m running ubuntu 9.1 karmic It connects fine to wireless networks. But when i do: sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode monitor. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Pavillion DV7 laptop running Ubuntu 10.04, and I am having some problems with Ubuntu handling a network connection. Every so often, I leave my computer in locked mode overnight to download something. But, when I do this, the network just deactivates early on [there is a symbol of a blank wireless symbol with a red "?" by it]. Both the wireless and wired network connections are deactivated, and I am using a wired connection. This also sometimes happens in suspend mode, too, but less often. I have to restart my computer before it will connect again, as logging out and back in again does not suffice.

The windows boot loader has been replaced by GRUB so now i can's select safe mode with networking. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have OpenVPN running on my Ubuntu Server just fine. I can connect over the Internet and access all my resources on the LAN via bridged mode perfectly. My server only has one LAN card and sits behind my router, which means it has a private IP address of 10.1.1.2....Which brings me to my question. I want to open up access to my friends via OpenVPN, but I don't want them to be able to access other machines on my LAN (e.g. 10.1.1.20). However, I do want them to be able to talk to each other and pass broadcasts (old LAN games), as well as my laptop (let's say 10.1.1.7).I've tried using iptables to block traffic to the LAN (such as .20), to no avail. I've been reading up and it seems as though iptables won't even filter the traffic, as it's passed at a lower layer. Is this true? If so, what do you recommend I do in order to prevent my buddies from accessing the rest of my LAN while siumultaneously allowing broadcasts pass for some very old Windows LAN games (we're talking Windows 9.

I set username/password in modem (PPPOE mode) and when modem is Turn On, I connected to Internet. but in opening site or download file (any send packet) I have to wait ~20 sec to replay server. but if I use Bridge mode in modem I connect to Internet by ubuntu pppoe connection everything is fine and speedy.
I need to set username/password in PPPOE mode cuse my phone is thirsty of Internet.
I don't have this issue in Phone or Windows.

I have a built in wireless card that is capable of connecting to my network on the Wireless N protocols. However it will only work at G speeds. It shows it's connection speed at 54mbps and when i set the network at N only mode it could not even connect. How do I get it to connect at the faster wireless speeds? My linux workstation recently crashed. After rebooting, Linux (Red Hat 5.3) will not boot properly and automatically went into emergency mode or recovery mode i think. I can still see my /home/user/ and all the files inside.I boot from CD to rescue mode and tried mounting read-only the /dev/sd5 which contains the files in the crashed hard disk to try to copy out my files but mounting was unsuccessful (invalid argument). I checked the filesystem type using fsck -N /dev/sda5 and shows it to ext2. i tried to mount another known working hdd and was successful.
My question is why in emergency mode, the crashed hdd is able to be mounted automatically as read-only but cannot be done in rescue mode thru a bootable CD?Is there any special mount options used in emergency mode?I also cannot copy out in emergency mode booting from the crashed hard disk as everything is read only.
I played with the graphics in kde4 and seem to have losy my installation. i have tried the rescue system option, recover system options and in desperation (i was just about to reinstall) tried booting in failsafe mode, and it worked!
where do i go to find out what the problem is regarding the normal boot mode? i think my pc is starting to resent the continual use of the reset button!
