Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Get Winmodem To Work
Dec 26, 2010
I'm trying to use the modem which came with my laptop to connect to the internet. Unfortunately it's a winmodem, like most. The output of scanModem (attached) is not clear enough as to which driver should be used on this modem. I finally installed and configured sl-modem-daemon - but I still don't know which country should I specify, since Colombia (where I currently live) is not one of the available options. It appears, nevertheless, that my system is talking to the modem. I can't connect to the internet, though, since I always get this message with either Gnome-PPP or WvDial:
Code:
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
[Code]....
Also: the exact same setup works under Windows XP, so I know there's nothing wrong with my hardware.

I am new to Ubuntu and Linux. I think that I like Ubuntu, but I don't think it likes me! I can't get onto the internet with my "old fashioned" dialup that is preinstalled in my Dell Latitude. In fact I can't find any reference to a dialup modem in Ubuntu 9.10. Have done some research and it appears that my winmodem will not work with linux, but there maybe some complex way around this problem. Can it be done? I have a Conexant HDA D110 MDC V.92 modem.

I am trying to set up an unused machine as a web server for my students.
I originaly tried with Redhat 9 and had the same problems. I am using an HP Pentium 4 system with 2 network cards.
1) The built in Realtek RTL8139 configured as eth0.
2) An add in Broadcom BCM5782 Gigabit card that was added I presume when the built in card failed (we have a number of machines like this around the school), configured as eth1.
I did not realize the second card was installed when I had Red hat 9 on the system, but I discovered it after installing centos 5.5. I have tried to configure the system to use DHCP with and without getting the DNS from the provider, and both ways the system complains that there is no connection, check the cable, so it will not activate the device.
When I configure the device to use a fixed IP, I can configure the device, but I can't ping anything on the network other than myself. I suppose it is possible that both network cards have failed, but I get green link lights with both cards, when I connect them to my router, so I am at a loss as to why neither board seems to work. I don't have a spare network card to slide in because the computer takes a special mini card. Is there an easy way to test the board to see if the board is a problem?

I just started having a problem with my 10.04 laptop a few days ago, maybe Thursday, last week. When the computer is plugged into my home network (standard 192.168.1.1 sort of IPs) it works fine, but when I try to connect to my work network (130.15.90.XX) I am unable to pick up an IP. The router in my office is working fine, all the windows boxes can connect.
I've also noticed that when the computer is plugged in at work the notification icon for the networking indicates it is looking for a wireless connection (rather than the normal up/down arrows), even if wireless is deactivated
I can set a static IP in /etc/network/interfaces and everything works, so it seems to be a DHCP problem?

I've been experiencing a problem with Fedora in which when I enable Wireless in Fedora, Wireless networking does not work in windows. HOwever, when disabled, it works correctly. Windows claims it is "not able to find any networks to connect to"
EDIT: It seems that when wireless is disabled manually on fedora before shutdown, there are no problems in windows.

Networking on Fedora 11 doesn't work for me on various machines. Fedora 10 does, but only if you don't do an update. Why does Fedora get worse the more you keep it up-to-date?

I've been trying to set up an SSH key on my server and laptop. I generate the key on the laptop, copy the id_rsa.pub file over into '/home/server/.ssh/authorized_keys', and try restarting the SSH server on the remote machine (server). Every time I try to ssh into the server from the laptop, I get a password prompt.
When I created the key, I left the password blank. It is asking me for PASSWORD, not PASSPHRASE when I try to login. So, I would assume the key is not working/being recognized at all. I have tried changing the permissions of the ssh folder and authorized_keys file on the server per various posts I have found on the web. Nothing works.

I bought an Alfa Network AWUS036NH adapter that I want to use with Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop.it looks like it won't connect automatically and the install instructions don't make any sense to me. I've installed from source before, but this is different. See here:
Quote:
Build Instructions:

1> $tar -xvzf DPB_RT2870_Linux_STA_x.x.x.x.tgz go to "./DPB_RT2870_Linux_STA_x.x.x.x" directory.
2> In Makefile set the "MODE = STA" in Makefile and chose the TARGET to Linux by set "TARGET = LINUX" define the linux kernel source include file path LINUX_SRC modify to meet your need.

I connected from the Asus EeePC (Jaunty) to my Karmic machine using Remote Desktop - Vinagre to the Vino server over ethernet. However despite getting a connection I could not see the changes I was making - I can control the desktop but the client never updates the screen. It works perfectly connecting to Real VNC on my Windows machine.I tried installing Real VNC from the package manager but the X vnc module does not load - missing symbol. So I decided to compile from source but the build fails on making the tcp networking part.
I need a solution to control my desktop from the Eee and am confused as to why none of this works. I have tried everything I know of. I have read the README's carefully and I cannot understand why I can control Windows from Ubuntu but not another Ubuntu desktop (well I can but as I said I can't see the changes just a static image).

I've installed Ubuntu 9.1 on my Acer Aspire One ZG5 that was previously running Win XP with the wireless working fine. In ubuntu, though, i can't get the wireless to work at all and I don't really even know how to troubleshoot it. I've opened a terminal and used sudo to update various packages, but still nothing. It does appear as though the system recognizes the card since I can configure it, but I'm not keen on playing wi8th the BSSID and MAC address stuff because I just don't have any confidence that it will change my situation. Has anyone had any success with this setup (ubuntu 9.1 and acer one)? Is there a step-by-step wireless troubleshooting/ configuration process that's generic to ubuntu?

I can't seem to get ping to work on my home computer. I actually have two separate installations of Ubuntu 9.10. One is at home, sharing space with Windows Vista (dual-boot) on a Dell Inspiron 1525. The other is at workusing Sun VirtualBox on a Windows XP host. ping works quite well at work, through VirtualBox. For example, Code:ping linuxcommand.org always gets 0% packet loss. However, when I do the same thing at home, I always get 100% packet loss.

Let me start off by saying that I'm a complete Linux-noob. I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and I'm really enjoying it. I was planning to install it for quite a while now but now that I have my own computer, I actually could make it happen. That being said, it's a whole difference with Windows though and sometimes it's hard to find my way in this new system. My main problem is that I can't seem to get my wireless connection working. From what I've read online this problem is not uncommon with Ubuntu 9.10?
I tried searching for my wireless card drivers in 'System > Administration > Hardware Drivers' but that didn't really work out. It did find a wireless card driver but when I try to activate it, it returns an error message. All the other drivers seem to be installed so I can't really see what the problem is. Can anyone help me with this?BTW, I think I also have a problem with the graphics card driver. When I try to active the 'extra' desktop effects is says this can't be activate. I already tried installing Compiz and the Composite Manager.

When I click on the network connection sign at the top of the screen on Xubuntu (even on Ubuntu--I uninstalled it to see if that was the problem but the problem persisted on Xubuntu), it will say wireless network 'device not ready'. i tried running a command from the Xubuntu Troubleshooting and it said that my device was turned off for some reason. This is not true as I made sure that I turned it on. I've tried everything else and I am all out of luck. I also do not have a boot-up CD for Xubuntu/Ubuntu and I'm not sure of how to do all those commands in the terminal
.
About my network card...
Hardware details:
Board: Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card Rev 5.8
Chipset: BCM4312/BCM2050
I forgot to mention at the bottom that it won't let me look at my hardware drivers and it says I don't have the correct things properly installed and then it won't show any drivers (so this problem probably cannot be solved using ndiswrapper).

I have been using another Linux distro(Xandros) for 3 years on one computer and have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a different computer. I am trying to network the 2 computers via simple ethernet cards and a crossover cable so that I can gradually migrate applications, data and peripherals from Xandros to Ubuntu. I am completely new to Ubuntu and I am really struggling to get NFS to work. Each computer
can ping the other, so the hardware connectivity seems OK. I have shared the relevant directories from each computer. I have followed malco2001's ellent HowTo guide and have now reached the stage where Xandros, as client, can mount directories on Ubuntu, as server, and see the files but I cannot get Ubuntu, as client, to mount directories on Xandros. When I attempt this from Ubuntu, using the command
# mount -t nfs 192.168.1.2:/home/richard /mnt/PC2_richard
(I have already issued from Ubuntu: # mkdir /mnt/PC2_richard)
I get the message:
mount.nfs: mount to NFS server '192.168.1.2:/home/richard' failed: RPC Error: Success
The configuration of various files etc. is as follows:
Ubuntu
IP address: 192.168.1.1
[Code]...
I should mention that Xandros does not have nfs-kernel-server installed; instead it has nfs-user-server.I am sorry if I have omitted or done something really stupid but I have spent best part of a week on this with only partial success.

I am running an Ubuntu 10.4 box with all ports forwarded on an internet router. The point is I can ping my PC with its external IP but no other services are accessible through it. I have also checked my iptables rules. It's completely flushed and the default rule is set to ACCEPT. The worst thing is that when I boot my box with windows XP, it is completely accessible by its external IP and I could successfully initiate a remote desktop connection to it over the net.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a computer I can't get the wireless to work. I looked into it, and I believe the problem is that I don't have the right driver to work with the wireless card, but I wasn't able to tell what my wireless card is properly. And when I got the bcmwl-kernel-source package and installed it, the driver still didn't appear under "hardware drivers". Compounding the problem, I can't use any sudo commands for some reason because when it prompts me to enter the sudo password, the keys other than "enter" don't seem to work. I probably don't have the right information up there.
