I'm going round in circles with this as I'm just not very good at using the command line in Ubuntu. I've bought an Edimax EW-7811Un nano USB wifi adapter, and I'm really cheesed off at the moment because I can't get it to work on my laptop. I've got Ubuntu 10.04 on it. I really want this tiny dongle to work with my computer. Ubuntu is much fats than Windows, and I use it all the time, but my current wifi donlge is an old big monstrosity!

I have Maverick Meerkat running perfectly on my laptop and have loaded as dual boot onto my old XP pc as well, I'm quite a newbie and working my way through Ubuntu for Non Geeks.
Problem - apparently this PCI card - Edimax wireless N PCI 7727in card is supposed to work out of the box, it came with the Ralink drivers for Ubuntu RT2860.
the network manager finds the homehub and tries to connect but just continually tries and never actually does it, the card works fine with XP so i know it's not faulty.
if it was a driver fault would the card be working at all? would it try to find the network manager?
I bought this card as previously i was using a Dlink DWA-140 and gave up trying to make it work, this card is advertised as Linux compatible in the Ubuntu forums list and on the card.

Finally took the plunge and upgraded my ubuntu studio to karmic from jaunty. I seem to be experiencing a problem many have, being that my wifi card (edimax) which worked on my previous distro is now not working at all. I've done a lot of research and found the problem seems to mainly be with broadcom cards, and have tried a number of things relating to those that have worked for others, with no luck.
My problem seems to be not that the drivers wont activate or anything like that, my problem is that under hardware drivers nothing appears at all. I have no drivers present, where most people are talking of 3. i have not found anyone else with this problem. My problem is compounded in addition by not being about to use a wire connection at all.

I have just purchased an Edimax EW-7128g with Ralink RT61 chip and physically installed it in a system running CentOS 5.2. Trying to follow the installation instructions, I get the following:
[root@webtest Module]# make all
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build SUBDIRS=/root/drivers/2007_1210_RT61_Linux_STA_v1.1.2.0/Module modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [all] Error 2
The problem is that although /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build exists, it appears to be a link:
[root@webtest Module]# ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 43 Mar 23 15:34 /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build -> ../../../usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-92.el5-i686

I have just installed an Edimax EW-7612PIn PCI-E Wifi card which has an RTL8192SE chipset. This chipset is not supported under current F15 kernels so I have installed the driver and firmware from source and have that working fine. The driver can see the card and I can issue 'iwconfig' commands successfully enough to see my Wifi network.
The problem I have is that I don't understand the relationship between iwconfig and wpa_supplicatant and as I'm running a headless F15 server I cannot use the NetworkManager GUI to help me. I should also note that the Wifi network is using WPA2-Personal encryption.
This is what I have done:
Configured /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 with what I think are reasonable values (based on google searches), including the ESSID, TYPE as Wireless, etc.
Configured /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf, including using the key value returned from wpa_passphrase.
Arranged for wpa_supplicant to run from boot, using chkconfig.
However when I run 'ifconfig wlan0 up' I get the error message 'link is not ready' and indeed looking at the output from 'iwconfig wlan0' there are no configured values. I also understand that some values are configured by iwconfig and others by wpa_supplicant, however it's not clear what.
How do I permanently set iwconfig values?
How do I configure wpa_supplicant?

I bought a wireless card as stated because it said Linux compatible on it.
I found out on another blog that I needed to blacklist the following:
blacklist rt2x00usb
blacklist rt2x00lib
blacklist rt2800usb
Since then the wireless on my Ubuntu finds a couple of networks, amongst them my wireless network that I am trying to connect. When I enter the Password (which I enter correctly btw) then it tries to connect, but then stops after about 30 seconds.

I recently bought the Edimax 7781Un wireless modem specifically because it works with Linux. The OS does recognise the device and tries to connect to the router, however it connects and has the two semi-circles going round then it eventually disconnects. I thought it was my wireless device with little signal strength therefore I bought this one. However this one connected once for 20 seconds, 89% strength and disconnects. I booted up win7 and it works fine, so I have put it down to the driver or the OS.
Trying to compile the driver, I am up to the make step after following instruction here. I type make, it does a few things and errors a fair few things, the last line ending in [make] *** [LINUX] Error 2
Another possibility (I think) for this connection problem could be my AMP installation, however I have neither apache, php or mysql running and I still have the problem.I read somewhere that make requires more files, is this true? And if it is, where can I get it without an internet connection on my linuxbox? (I am currently using my brothers w7 computer).

Just a short note on getting this card to work in Fedora 14 (and presumably Fedora 15) 64bit. First of all, none of the rpm packages which you might choose will work because none of them are for this chipset. First, one goes to the Rosewill website, finds the driver for this card as a compressed tar file. After downloading it and extracting, you will find in the parent directory a Makefile and README_STA_PRI.
The instructions in README_STA_PRI, if followed carefully, will do the job except for one thing: there is a mistake in the os/linux/config.mk file that needs to be fixed. In the $(PLATFORM),PC 2.4 branch, change -imarch=i686 to -march=core2 and more importantly, in the 2.6 branch, add -march=core2 to the EXTRA_CFLAGS and add export CFLAGS (which would otherwise not be done). In the main Makefile, as per the instructions, I set HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=y and HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=y so that the Network Manager can control the card.
In the instructions, wps_supplicant is not where they indicate (it is in /usr/sbin/) and the configuration file which I used was in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf, not the one in the dbus-1/system directory. The wpa_supplicant command was run before the make and before "insmod rt3562.ko", and it generated a bunch of error messages because the card had not be recognized yet. The error messages didn't seem to matter.
The card was already in the machine and when "insmod rt3562.ko" was executed, the card was instantly recognized and the network manager set it up and put it into play without any further fuss or muss.

The issue is that after a while the lan side doesn't work any more (I don't know whether the wan side still works, but I assume it doesn't)
First we had BR6214K for which the transformator turned out to be broken (at least after a few years it gave 7 instead of 12 volt), only have it's replacement die shortly after. But the issue since the beginning was the network disconnecting every two to three days. Restarting the router solved the problem almost every time.
Now we have the same issue with a brand new BR6226n. This time the disconnection occurs almost every day. Restarting the router has so far worked every time.
Is this more likely to be a router or a computer issue (maybe a broken network card in one of the computers)?

I'm trying to configure my network card using the b43 driver. I'm running 10.04.2 on the kernel version 2.6.35-25-generic-pae.
Surprisingly, I was able to connect to my home wireless network using the b43 driver without a problem. The only issue is that it doesn't automatically connect. I have to use the following command in order to get it to work:
Code:
After typing my password, I wait for 10 seconds and am automatically connected. My question is, how do I configure my system to do this for me permanently (or at least automatically) so I don't have to type it every time I log on?

Got an Edimax 7717un USB dongle for my Acer aspire 6930 (built-in WiFi is broken). It finds access point OK, but fails to setup with DHCP. If I put in manual IP config, I can ping OK, but I cannot browse web (or even my router's setup page). I get same behaviour on a home brew desktop.
With manual IP config, ping to my router works fine (and very fast, as does ping to 2 or 3 internet web sites. I can traceroute to internet web sites OK as well. With web browsing, if I wait a few minutes some bits of the page may arrive. With connection set to DHCP, Wicd shows WiFi connecting OK, but DHCP setup times out.

I have two PCI network cards: Wired - Successfully connects to the internet and removed from the outputs describes below. Wireless - A new and works well in WinXP - Edimax EW-7711ln: problematic - can't connect. Manufacture says it's supported in Linux. Although in it's site it doesn't have any linux driver to download. The XP driver contain 2 .cab files that cannot be accessed using unshield/cabextract so I guess "ndiswrapper" is not an option. Other Linux disrtos also didn't recognize the wireless as well. Below I added as much information as I could get.

I've been trying to make/compile the driver for a wireless card. The card is usb, it's titled Micronext MN-WD550M and seems to use the rtl8712 driver.Firstly, though I did this once two years ago I seem to have completely forgotten how to install a driver in ubuntu.
Secondly, I'm not sure I have the right driver anyway since in the notes in the readme it says it is for i386 (I run amd 64). The driver is here [URL] Thirdly, after clicking through various readmes and documentation without feeling any more intelligent, I then tried using ndiswrapper to install a windows driver and ubuntu would crash if the usb wireless card was plugged in. Blarg.I feel like this should be so simple I'm going to make a clean installation of ubuntu 10.10 shortly (for various unrelated reasons) so anything I messed up with ndiswrapper should be back to normal.

I had an Ubuntu Server 32 bit installation and everything was working fine. Now that I installed Ubuntu Server 64bit on a new drive in the same machine, the ethernet card is not working!! This is insane cause when I put the hard disk with the 32bit installation back and booting from it, the ethernet card is working without any problems but in the 64bits installation it is not shown at all using "ifconfig -a"
lspci output:
Quote:
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications AR8151 v1.0 Gigabit Ethernet (rev c0)
How can I check which module is being loaded in the 32bits installation to try to load it manually in the 64 bits installation?

I have a dual boot on my computer - with ubuntu 9.04 jaunty jackalope on one side of the partition, and windows 2000 on the other. I recently bought - and had installed - a new ethernet card: TP-LINK network adapter TF-3239DL. It works perfectly on windows, but not on linux. I understand that the problem is that I need to install the linux driver, which I have available (comes in the CD), but I don't really understand how I am supposed to proceed. The instructions are very unclear to me, and I have relatively little experience.
