Ubuntu :: Network Manager - What Is The Relevance Of Adding The MAC Address To The Interface
Nov 26, 2010
Just curious, because it seems my wireless connection works regardless of whether or not the MAC address is listed there. I'm just curious why that option is there to add it if it works regardless.

how can I go about adding an additional lo interface, like lo:0? I need to create this interface, give it an IP and set it to not arp, so this box can be behind a load balancer. Just copying ifcfg-lo and changing the requisite attributes did not work, got an error saying "Interface lo:0 is not available".

Showing my ignorance, but why would this work
address 172.16.1.8
netmask 255.255.254.0
network 172.16.1.0
broadcast 172.16.2.255
[Code]....
Notice the 2 in address. Seems to me it doesn't like the network and wants it to be 172.16.0.0, but I am adding to a network already configured this way.

It indicates no network although the network is available as indicated by ifconfig and route below. When I switch WiFi on, the nm works flawlessly. Someone just erased my HWADDR line from /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. How can I obtain my original MAC address?
Code:
ifconfig eth0 does not work (it shows the wrong MAC address) since the HWADDR line from the file I mentioned above was erased. Also there is no ifcfg-eth0.bak backup configuration file.

When I attempt to connect to a wireless network, the network manager asks me for the network's password, then says 'setting network address' for 20 or so seconds, then asks me for some random Hex or ASCII key in the same type of window I put the password in (Secrets for Noel -- KDE Daemon). Since a key is already typed into the window, I press OK, which then causes the network manager to go back to 'setting network address', then the window pops up again and keeps repeating itself.
I'm running Opensuse 11.4 with KDE, and my driver is ath9k. I don't know much about linux so please don't tell me to 'recompile this' or 'change this setting' without explaining how to do it. Please help, I've been unable to connect to wireless in OpenSUSE for 2 weeks now.

I used the network manager to configure my eth0 interface.It is working fine. I have found the nameserver entries in /etc/resolv.conf files. But the /etc/network/interfaces file does not carry the ip, netmask, gateway,network and broadcast entries. It only has a entry for the lo interface. where are the settings for eth0 as done by the network manager, stored in case of ubuntu?

The IP address acquisition problem I reported earlier has returned, and I am stymied. To recap: Ubuntu 9.10 would not obtain an IP address via a wired Ethernet connection. I resolved the problem at the time by configuring eth0 in /etc/network/interfaces:
Code:
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
and disabling Network Manager in Preferences > Startup Applications.After a powering down the PC today, the problem has returned. It appears that dhclient cannot obtain an IP address. This is true whether I am connected to the router (a Linksys WRT54G running Tomato), or directly to the DSL modem. When my usually wireless Ubuntu 9.10 laptop is wired to the router, it obtains an address almost instantly. I have made no changes to the network configuration since January. I have tried to keep current on Ubuntu updates.
Code:
jgb@alienware:~$ ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:30:1b:ac:5b:9e
inet6 addr: fe80::230:1bff:feac:5b9e/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

Setup : internet -- VirtualBoxHost -- WIFI-switch -- clients
VirtualBoxHost hosts several Virtual Machines and has 2 interfaces. Wan-interface is not used by VirtualBoxHost, but is directly mapped to the Virtual Machine Endian Firewall.
What I want:
Access to VM's for the Wifi-clients AND access from WiFi-clients to VirtualBoxHost.
What I have tried:
- create bridge
- add LAN-interface to bridge
- create tap0
- add tap0 to bridge
Virtual Machine uses tap0
Wifi-clients are connected via LAN-interface, via bridge, to VM's. But my host-machine is not accessible from a WLAN-client and also I can not access a VirtualMachine from my host-machine. A WLAN-client can connect to a VirtualMachine without problem. I think with my bridge the local LAN and the VM's are now connected. How to put also my host-machine in the LAN? As a LAN-client.

I had trouble connecting to a wireless network with openSUSE, so I tried the YAST network manager to see if that fixed it. Not only did it not fix it, but now I cannot connect to any network, wired or wireless. I tried to open the default network manager and it said "Network management disabled". How do I re-enable it?I also have set YAST settings back to their originals with no luck.

I have a network config as follows:
X.8 <---> X.41 X.40 <--->X.16
where X.8 and X.16 are 2 separate workstations and X.40/X.41 are two interface cards in the same machine. Now I apply brctl bridging in the X.40/X.41 machine by adding both the interfaces to the bridge and thereby connecting X.8 and X.16. This part is working perfect. But there is no connectivity between X.8 and X.41 and when I try to ping at X.8 to X.41 it gives Destination Host Unreachable. Is there a way to achieve this since I require some message to be sent from X.8 to the X.40/X.41 bridge machine.

Version 10.04 LTS. Installed desktop version and network worked but I needed a static IP address and the install configures for a DHCP configured address. I tried changing to static address using the System->Preferences->Network Connections application but was unable to get the system to come up with the network up.
So I manually modified the /etc/network/interfaces and the /etc/resolv.conf files. I restart the system but when I do an ifconfig, I don't see a configured IP address on eth0 (only the loopback address). If I run /sbin/ifup eth0 everything then works fine and ifconfig shows the correct address bound to eth0.
My files are as follows:

How can i find out what mac address had been configured by factory default. I changed my mac address with
Code:
ip link set addrs 00:01:02:03:04:05
and now want to have the original one back. I'm having some trouble with a gigabit LAN PCI Express card. Namely the 89156 from delock. Output of dmesg
Code:
r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded
[ 4.137225] r8169 0000:02:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
[ 4.137268] r8169 0000:02:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
[ 4.137346] r8169 0000:02:00.0: irq 27 for MSI/MSI-X
[code]....
So the card was recognized by the kernel. The driver was loaded and everything fine.... should be! But after assigning an ip addr and setting the nic up with
Code:
ip addr add 192.168.1.1/24 dev eth1
ip link set dev eth1 up
the kernel complained about something like that
Code:
?SISTEM? Can't assign address Also I could not find anything useful on the net finally the readme gave me some. So i changed the MAC address and everything was fine. The nic came up and got an ip through dhclient.i want to know why the old/original mac address didn't work. But even after reboot the new mac address remains. All I know the old one begun with 7b. how to get the original mac of a nic?

I recently just upgraded from humble Linux user to confused Linux admin of my own virtual Linux server. When I issue the ifconfig command I get following output.
Code:
venet0:0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
inet addr:1.2.3.4 P-t-P:1.2.3.4 Bcast:1.2.3.4 Mask:255.255.255.255
UP BROADCAST POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MTU:1500 Metric:1
The WAN IP of the interface is not really 1.2.3.4 I just changed that IP for security reasons.What I am trying to figure out, is it possible to assign a private IP address to the same interface or can I only have one IP address per interface. I understand I have a mask of /32 so I am not going to be able to subnet the address to create any more addresses, so I assume I am stuck with the WAN IP (public IP) that I have, and just need to deal with it.
The reason I ask this is because I have been reading through several DNS/BIND tutorials/walk-throughs, and a lot of them specify setting up a intranet access with 192.168.1.1 address for the local DNS server, but since I am connecting to the sever via SSH I figure I do not need a private IP address.

I have two network interfaces in my pc eth0 and wlan0 and a virtual one br0.
router <= eth0 (0.0.0.0) => br0 (192.168.1.10) <= wlan0 (0.0.0.0) => other pc.
On startup of my pc (ubuntu 10.04 server x64), samba bind itself only to loopback network interface, as i can see when i do netstat -an , preventing me to enter in my shares from a remote pc.
Here is my configuration regarding samba network:
Code:
interfaces = 127.0.0.0/8 192.168.1.0/24
bind interfaces only = yes
and my /etc/network/interface
Code:
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
code....
Any idea fo speed up my bridge configuration or to force samba to wait unitl the bridge is ready?
