Ubuntu :: NIC Not Turned Off On System Shutdown / Sort It?

It appears I've got some strange driver problem.. When I shut down this computer, the NIC apparently doesn't go off. The LEDs next to the ethernet socket keep blinking, so does the LED on my ethernet switch.
I don't have this problem when using XP, only Karmic. That leads me to think that there's something wrong with the network driver. My NIC is on-board, the ASUS M3A32-MVP. According to System Info this is the Marvell 88E8056 PCI-E.
It seems like ASUS doesn't have the drivers on their website (anymore), because their website search returns empty handed. Also the motherboard product page doesn't appear to know it.
Anyone have any tips / ideas? I'm just unplugging the machine before turning it off now... as it appears to be disturbing the rest of my network
This is the difference in the output of a port scan using Zenmap on the same system with UFW turned off and then with it turned on. It is obvious that UFW works.
The wireless connection works fine. The wireless switch automatically turns itself on every time I start the computer. However, after turning it off, I can't ever turn it on again unless I restart the computer. And because of this, the wireless connection is disabled until the next time I start the computer.I don't think this is a hardware problem because the switch can be turned on and off, although not in the way I expect.
I'm using ubuntu 9.10 on an Acer Aspire 4740G. The command [lspci | grep Network] shows Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01). the [rfkill list] command shows (when the switch is on)

and, as expected, shows (when the switch is turned off)

I just want to be able to turn the switch on or off at any time I want as long as the computer is still on.
I am using Ktorrent 3.3.4 (compiled - using KDE 4.3.2) on Ubuntu version 9.10 (Ubuntu 2.6.31-19-generic)
I have tested the shutdown plugin to shutdown when all torrents stop downloading and also tested by selecting when events below happen and manually selecting the torrents.
I have the shutdown button selected.
However on both occasions my PC does not shutdown after the downloads have completed.
What am I doing wrong? Or is it because I am on Ubuntu and using the Gnome desktop and this only works for KDE?
I have a weird problem, i have an LG LCD screen that i connect to my laptop via HDMI through nVidia. I was watching full length movies and everything worked perfectly. So, i got myself a new, slightly bigger LG LCD, and now, when I play a movie, about 20-60 minutes into the movie, my machine just turns off. doesnt even shutdown properly, just turns itself off, as if the power ran out (which it didnt..)
I thought maybe i had too many things installed, or mabe i should wait for a new version.. so i waited till i reinstalled a fresh 10.4 on a new partition, played a movie, and again, the machine just suddenly turned itself off.
i tried looking in the system log viewer, but between shutdown and startup, i see nothing special (besides ALOT of "rt_ioctl_giwscan. 1(1) BSS returned, data->length = 105")..
i tried running 64bit & 32bit and it has the same error.
Although I'm a linux user, I don't know much about the whole booting process myself. I normally have a friend that I can consult when things don't go the way I expected. But here's the thing: he updated my computer and went away. And of course I can't reach him and I really need it to work. And moreover, I want to be able to sole things myself.
The booting process stops halfway. The last thing it says is: can't access tty: job control turned off (initramfs) ...
I have Vista 32bit dual booting with Ubuntu 10.04 I want Vista to be my default OS so I installed Start-Up Manager in Ubuntu and set Vista as the default OS and changed the timeout to 0 seconds.
By doing this, I thought that it would always boot to Vista as if nothing else was installed (which is what I wanted it to act like) and then whenever I wanted to boot to Ubuntu I would hold down 'Shift' to load the Grub2 menu and select Ubuntu.
The problem is, every time I boot up the Grub menu won't load. I tried holding 'Shift' down, tapping repeatedly, but all that comes up is something like "Grub Menu...Loading" in the top left corner and then it boots to Vista.
I just need a way to boot back to Ubuntu to change the timeout. Thanks.
Today I downloaded an update (can't remember which ones they were exactly) and afterwards I was told I needed to restart my computer. But once this happened I couldn't even get to the GRUB menu. before the grub menu was supposed to appear I got this error message "error: no such device: /ubuntu/disks/root.disk" and "error: no such device: /ubuntu/install/boot/grub/grub.cfg" afterwards I get to some command line version of grub where I can type in commands like "reboot" but i don't have my old menu where I just selected the kernel I wanted. I have a dual boot with Wubi if that makes any difference. Does anybody have a way I can recover my copy of Ubuntu, or will I need to reinstall?
This is happening pretty often. when in ubuntu, usually while i'm browsing the web, my browser will go dim then a box will come up saying something along the lines of missing resources. the thing is, all my desktop icons will then turn to red x's and no text characters on any further boxes will show. when i restart it says grub error and takes one more restart to finally come on. i got fed up with it and switched over to windows 7 where my browser also froze and my computer froze up.
From couple of mins my system shutdowned without my permission I thought I'm infected or something because I installed aMSN so I thought it's because of it, but I checked my syslog and found this:

Temperature reached is that what cause system halt? Also when I press ctrl+alt+Fn I see blank screen why is that?
I am using Ubuntu 10.04. From last 3-4 days, after updating, I am not able to shutdown the system. I try to use command, but behavior is same Whenever I try to shutdown the system, it exits from desktop environment and a white screen displays on screen. And nothing happened. One time I did wait for 1/2 hr, but system dont seems to power down.
My Ubuntu file server sits under a desk and shares files with the network without a hitch, and in a perfect world I wouldn't ever need to shut it down (I reached 6 months uptime once). However, since it occasionally needs service, or additions and needs to be moved, I need to shut down.
The trouble is, the power management system is borked, so whenever I issue "sudo powerff now", the system halts, but the PSU stays on. I usually wait a few minutes after and flip the PSU switch, but I'm never sure if the system is already down.
Is there a way to reorder the way services shut down so that I put SSH last, and therefore know when the system is down when my session is disconnected? Is defaults.rc or whatever responsible for that?
When I shut down the computer, it does not remain shut down. This is different from "restarting" the computer because when I "shutdown" the computer powers down, the fan and disks stop spinning for a second, and then everything starts again. When I "restart" the fan and disks remain spinning throughout the restart process.Further, the computer is dual booting with Windows XP Pro. If I shut down from Windows, the system remains shut down.

Just installed Ubuntu 9.04 last night. All seems perfect except on shutddown. It seems to go through all shutdown processes but right about the time you expect the computer to turn off a message says: "system halted [4027.514883]" Have Googled it but no matches. If I just push the on/off button at that point it shuts off immediately
I updated a RHEL 4 system today using up2date and when the system rebooted it just said "GRUB" on the screen for a few seconds and then restarted (and did this over and over and over).
I booted from a rescue CD and was going to reinstall grub.
Here's the kicker: this machine has two hard drives configured with software RAID 1, and I don't want to screw up the mirroring by tinkering with grub.
/etc/fstab shows that /boot is at /dev/md0 but "/sbin/grub-install /dev/md0" doesn't work ("/dev/md0 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive").
I have a bad feeling that if I do "/sbin/grub-install /dev/hda1" that I'm going to screw up my mirroring.
I tried the above command on my pc. It broadcasts the message passed , but I noticed one thing that during this time( 2min) normal users are not allowed to login onto the terminal.
I am getting the error message "Waiting for sound system to respond" when I click on System> Preference> Sound in ubuntu 10.04 in root login but when I login in with different user account same works fine.I am not much familiar with Linux.I already tried to following:

i'm really irritated with this huge problem with my system. i'm using ubutnu10.10 on my dell inspiron 1525. the problem is, whenever i play any video on any browser(firefox and chromium), no matter if its your tube or vimeo or whatever. the system crashes as soon as video starts to play. the video plays for few seconds system starts to slow a bit and suddenly it crashed and shuts down.
also while using the totem videos sidebar i can searhc the video but cannot play it at all. i get this error "gstreamer encountered a general supporting library error"
i tried other forums too but.. no help till now. its like 2 months with both these problems
am starting to get this figured out. finally got the wifi working on a HP touchsmart tx2 laptop and once i give ubuntu a total system shutdown command this system restarts, is this normal or do i need to fix something?

I now I'm stuck with a quite annoying (but not sever) error. When I shut down the computer doesn't turn of it just restart?!

I am using Linux operating system fedora 6 .Before today everything is going well. But today internet connection gets failed. It can not connect to the server for the internet connection. But in the same computer,installed windows operating system shows the internet connection.Please try to answer my question why the Linux operating system can not connect to the internet?
I'm trying to compile libetpan-0.57 on RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.2 64-bit and it is refusing to link against the 64 bit system libraries. I've tried everything I can think of. I've tried to hack libtool, run the command make was trying to run manually and changing the library search paths but nothing works. When I run the command make tried to run manually and change -L/usr/lib to -L/usr/lib64 most of the "skipping incompatible" library messages disappear except for "/usr/lib/libexpat.so: could not read symbols: File in wrong format." Below is the output when I run make code...
I currently run kernel 2.6.34.7-66.fc13.i686 (sort of). When I select from the Gnome menu System -> Shutdown and select Shutdown from the dialog, my system only logs out, presenting me with the greeting screen. While this is a minor problem and I rarely shutdown my machine, it is mildly disconcerting.I have dropped back to 2.6.34.7-63.fc13.i686 and that shutdowns properly using this method. (Also, 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.i686 works properly). I can imagine that it might close some security issue in which an unauthorized user is able to halt the entire machine. Especially if this is something that will continue in future releases of the kernel.
after installing linux mint 7, I have been getting one beep on shutdown, a google search on this came back as a ram problem...but then i ran across a bunch of posts on ubuntu forums about one beep on shutdown, with an older version of ubuntu, grep does return some paramter errors, but in the mint bug report page those are listed as : benign ignore. it doen't bother me in the least, as long as it isn't a warning of impending hardware failure.
