Ubuntu :: Multiple Applications Segmentation Faults After GNOME Load
May 4, 2010
some users [ possibly ATI card owners running fglrx default ubuntu driver ] have issues having compiz enabled and trying to change the mouse pointer to a larger size. It actually doesn't get resized at all, expect when moved over Firefox and OpenOffice.I was fiddling in trying to get a workaround for this when suddenly Nautilus started to crash and respawn in an infinite loop. Everything then started to fail. gnome-terminal wouldn't open, xterm wouldn't open, menus wouldn't respond. Etc.The entire GNOME desktop was inoperable.
Logging out and choosing Fluxbox and KDE didn't help. I was sent right back to the GDM login screen. Hmm... seems not related entirely to GNOME... if it all. From a terminal, I could see constant crashes, segfaults on libc6-2.11.1..While at it, I logged on another account (my wife's) and everything was perfectly FINE, with no issues at all. Creating them another account and initializing, it also didn't happen any segfaults. However, everytime I logged in my own account, everything would happen again... nautilus respawning, no terminal, nothing, not even logout would work. Either I hit a MAJOR BUG in libc6 current ubuntu compile, or a setting file inside my home dir got really corrupted and screwed up. It was very frustrating, because this bug was a show stopper. For those who concern, my mobo is an Asus M3A78-EM running a ATI HD 3200 IGP, and I have ubuntu-default fglrx running.
I had run memtest+ overnight and no errors whatsoever. The fact that this was an "account specific" issue deems that there is no hardware fault. I had to migrate my old account to a newly created account, it was hard work because of my 100GB files. Setting ownership in each of them, etc. Everything is OK now, but I really wished to know what dimmed out my bright Lucid Lynx experience yesterday. And I just hope this doesn't happen again.

I have am using Maverick Meerkat 10.10 Kernel version: 2.6.35-22-generic I have a Razer DeathAdder gaming mouse. I am trying to compile/run this tool: Razer config tool I have jumped through several hoops:[URL]..
This install was for 10.04. This link helped with taming the mouse a little:[URL]..
Code:
xinput --set-prop "Razer Razer DeathAdder" "Device Accel Constant Deceleration" 5
Code:
xinput --set-prop "Razer Razer DeathAdder" "Device Accel Velocity Scaling" 1
I get the program to compile (after some problems the usb.h file not being where the system said it was) and I install it following these instructions in the README file that I have attached. I get a segmentation fault error when the razer daemon razerd tries to start:

I have an annoying problem with Ubuntu 10.10 64bit. I made a clean installation of Ubuntu on my LG P310 laptop and I'm using the Nvidia proprietary driver. The problem is that I get segmentation faults from random program after a while of usage. Examples of programs are Thunderbird, Synaptic, apt-get and tap crashes in Chromium (which I would think is segmentation faults). It would seem like a underlying library is causing the faults. The problem disappear after a reboot, the faults might only occur after a wakeup from suspend, I'm not sure about that at the moment. I can't figure out what triggers these faults, and I don't know how to do error tracing in this case.

Recently I noticed that on my Centos 5.4 system, yum no longer works and is giving segmentation faults. I can run "yum --help" and it works, but if I try to run something like "yum upgrade php" it will fault. I also noticed that other things are seg faulting as well, like /usr/sbin/logrotate and /usr/bin/certwatch.
I am guessing there is some sort of common library that needs fixing, but I have no idea what. I've read other posts about the yum segmentation fault and have tried various steps provided but so far no luck in getting it to work again. It used to work, and I rarely change this system so I'm not sure what could have caused it.

I've set up a new virtual server (ubuntu 10.04 LTS on RHEVM, "uname -a Linux print-me 2.6.32-31-server #60-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 17 23:33:39 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux") 2 weeks ago just for cups and samba printing (no other filesharing). Ran tests and it looked fine, then last friday I have added 10 Ricoh printers and 3 hp printers. Looked fine, apart from an issue with one "HP Color Laserjet 2600n", but resolved this with the help of the driver found here: [URL].. Since saturday, cups crashes daily in the morning with a segmentation fault (segfault:, eg:
/var/log/kern.log:Apr 3 06:40:39 print-me kernel: [154716.314945] cupsd[20713]: segfault at 7f097c8cd5d0 ip 00007f0ab0f0fb0f sp 00007fff5282dc10 error 4 in libcups.so.2[7f0ab0efb000+47000]
I wanted to trace what happens just before this by changing the LogLevel[URL]..upsd-conf.html) but setting it to anything higher than notice makes cups segfault again, with additional message on CLI:

I am unable to successfully start either the XFCE or Gnome desktops, in Gnome the my wallpaper is displayed but that is all. This problem appeared yesterday night after my hard disk filled up, then all Gnome programs began to crash, also "df" failed to terminate. I was able to clear some space from the terminal (around 2 GB).
I was able to run an xterm so I attempted to load the components of Gnome manually from the terminal, to see which were problematic. I found that every application which uses Gnome fails to execute, producing a segmentation fault. A Java crash informed me that a "problematic frame" producing SIGSEGV was libgnomevfs-2.so.0. I ran md5sum on all libraries matching the pattern /usr/lib/*gnome*, the checksums are identical to those on a working Ubuntu installation, so it is unlikely to be corruption of a library.
I have managed to determine that the problem is not in GLib or GTK+ as I wrote a simple (hello world) GTK+ application which executes without problem.Furthermore (due to a lack of Gnome's network manager) I am without a network connection on the problematic computer.

I have been running happily on Knoppmyth R5F27 (on Debian GNU 4.0/Etch) for a good long time. Everything has been operating well. My kids get to record their Mythbusters. Life is good. Tonight, though, I tried to make things better. And that was the mistake.
I read that we could use our PS3 to watch videos on Hulu. But, I needed a kind of proxy server or something to mask that I was using the PS3 browser. So, I thought I would install squid on the myth box.
I first tried apt-get install squid But, that didn't quite work. So, at a friend's suggestion, I ran: apt-get update Which had problems, too. Still, being a noob, I reran the apt-get install squid and a bunch of stuff came down. It has problems, too.
So, I turned back to apt-get update and realized there was a problem in sources.list. I updated it to have a more current repository and received the update. Then I realized that the apt-get for squid was pulling down resources for lenny. I struggled trying to kill the install for Squid. Failed. And then rebooted just to see if I have problems.
And I do. Mythbackend won't start. The command to do so produces a segmentation fault. Ditto for mythfrontend and mythtv-setup. I don't know what to do. Can someone help me roll this back to a stable setup of Etch? If you want to see my (very messy) attempt to install squid and update the system you can look at[URL]..

Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.

I'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

What do people use to run multiple applications in one terminal?
Thinking of turning my GUI into a big terminal with openbox on top and was thinking, where would I find a command-line timer tool?
And if I only had one terminal, how would I switch between applications? A 5 hour timer isn't nice if it locks up the terminal for 5 hours...

When the memory usage reaches 95% and above I noticed that the disk activity and load graphs go up and some of my applications are killed by the system. In windows, if someone define a pagefile then the OS will try to use it at the expense of very slow response. Why ubuntu does not use SWAP in such a way?

I would like to open multiple applications with one keyboard shortcut but don't get it running. When I add (open "System" > "Preference" > "Keyboard Shortcuts"; clicked "Add" ) a new shortcut and enter many commands in the "Command" field e.g. "gnome-terminal & xeyes" only the first application is started. I also tried to set up a shell script that contains the application calls and then use "gnome-terminal -x "sh /path/to/the/script.sh" but then I get the error message "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal".

I am running Xubuntu on a MacBook Pro with fluxbox as my window manager. Yesterday when I attempted to launch firefox I received a bus error and the application did not launch. I corrected the problem by removing and reinstalling firefox. Today the same problem is happening with emacs. I have not tried removing and reinstalling emacs so I am not sure if that will work but since the problem has occurred in more than one application now, I assume it points to a larger issue. I have done some research on bus errors but it isn't clear why this problem would manifest in different applications in this manner. After the a failed launch the dmesg reports this, which seems relevant:

I have extra 1gb NIC's to use but have no clue on how to spread the load of transfering files between multiple nics. Is this even possible? or does this happen automagically?

I have trouble when typing in Open Office Writer, Kmail, and zim, among other applications. It's not due to unintentional use of the 'insert' key, either. When I type in these applications, the word I am typing often disappears entirely if I don't add a space, return, or punctuation at the end of the word, or use the arrow keys. For example, when setting up a profile in Kmail, I typed my email address into the settings dialog box, and it kept removing the last part of the address: "myname@univ.edu" would always become "myname@univ." unless I added a space after the edu.
When I first encountered this behavior, in Writer, I thought it was a bug with the AutoComplete feature. But now that I've seen it in other applications, I think it is something more general. how to stop the unexpectedly deletion of words while typing?

I am using SQLite as my database for some portable cross platform applications I am working on with REALBasic as my IDE. I have an old Sybase 8.0 database that I can access via Microsoft Access and thereby extract the data I need from each table.
Now I know I can create .csv files from each table and load them into SQLite using the import tool, but then I can't define the primary key and other field attributes. So the other option is to load each file via SQL.
Now with most SQL editors I can create multiple queries and they will run just fine. But I can't seem to do that with the SQLite interfaces. I can paste multiple queries but I can only run one at a time. And by that I mean I have to click run.
Ummm that's not acceptable since my biggest table contains over 600,000 records. I have the queries all written, that was easy using a simple interface I wrote in Access.
Code:
INSERT INTO tblMeters(recordId,meterId,meterName,meterSerNum,registerSerNum,mxuSerNum,meterType,manufacture,meterModel,readType,groupId,multiplier,rollover,vendorId,xfrmerCode,bldgCode,CATEGORY,energyType,unitOfMeasure,location,access,comments,dateInstalled,dateCalibrate,pipeSizeIn,pipeSizeOut,elecMeterSpecs)
[Code]...
So is there another method I can use? I can't seem to find anything relating to my particular question at the SQLite web site

On my Debian Etch server, I'm finding a lot of the following in my /var/log/apache2/error.log file:
Code:
[Mon Jan 12 09:34:17 2009] [notice] child pid 17217 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)
[Mon Jan 12 09:34:18 2009] [notice] child pid 17206 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)
[Mon Jan 12 09:34:18 2009] [notice] child pid 17216 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)
What is a good way to trouble shoot and remedy this problem? We can't have processes dying all over the place, now can we.

I run Gnome and i want KDE applications to use the same icon set as i have for my Gnome desktop. I have searched the file system and found a folder called "default.kde4" in /usr/share/icons. I assume this is where KDE applications pull their icons from. Firstly, this folder is a linked folder. How do i find out where the original folder that it is linked to is? Secondly, i am assuming, that the KDE icons won't be a name for name match for the icons i am using in Gnome (Faenza just in case anyone is curious). What is the easiest way to get the KDE icons changed for the one's i am using in Gnome?
